Is there a data counter that helps me keep track of data coming and going from my phone.
On a limited data connection and just curious to see what is using it all.
Would also bee cool if it associated %data with applications

Another potential fix is to get unlimited internet access; with Cing it's only $19.95; then, no counting, no worries.... Cing also keeps track of data use through it's online access site, generally only 1-2 days behind real time but gives you a good idea of data usage.

SmaatoCost is an AWESOME app. It will even break down your data useage between GPRS and WiFi, so you know how much of each type of connection you were using. I've been using it for a little over 9 months and can say it's been pretty much "on target" as far as how my data useage has been billed and all the rest of my billing details (calls, SMS, MMS, etc.)
- have to install a program that download and displays ads (hope it only do that...)
- ugly display on vga ppc (htc touch diamond)
- doesn't seem to detect the gprs data on my diamond, it only display voice call info... and tried several "recalculate", tried to have data connection while the program is running... recalculate again... nothing. It still diplay 0 data connection...
So a lot of options/config, seem to be a nice prog, but useless if it doesn't detect the data connection info...
What is it with all of the Diamond people coming to the Wizard boards lately? This works for the Wizard, not the Diamond, which is why it isnt in their forums.
Hi all,
need some help here... My TyTN is transmitting large blocks of data randomly - but typically when I stop the wireless data connection.
I am on Rogers, and I am now using WM 6 (Dopod release WWE).
any thoughts, resolutions?
I have no idea what is being sent, or to where...
using GPRS monitor, so i know how much but not to whom or where.
I've been careful to stip all internet using apps, tried soft reset...
Any suggestions? Thoughts?
You using any weather software (including in HTC home) because they update heaps. You need to go into the settings and pick MANUAL UPDATE or it continually gets data through your 3g connection...
BAD if you have a crappy EXPENSIVE data plan.
Cheers...
Check out a program called NoData. Give it a google search. It basically blocks anything that isn't sms, mms or voice calls. Great if you are paranoid about data.
Hi,
I don't have a data plan and I pay by data sessions. Each session is up to 100kb but when I look at my bill I get loads of sessions with just a few bytes even within the short time of a minute. I assume the G1 opens a session and closes it when no data is transferred to safe power. The network then interprets this as a new connection and doesn't "fil up" the last 100kb session. This sucks as I waste quite a bit of money and I'm currently looking for a way to avoid this. Apparently running a messenger in the background doesn't do the trick. Any other suggestions?
Certian apps and widget as well as the market run in the backround and use data. Go to settings then data synchronization and un check the 1st box that says backround data that might help a bit
Thanks, I didn't mention one thing: I usually deactivate my data connection (APNdroid) when I don't need it.But when I do I get this odd behaviour for example when I'm just browsing the web.(other stuff in the background deactivated)
smh

cut that out. thats no way to talk to a fellow xda member. u might wanna edit that b4 a mod sees that becuase you could get banned for that.
Uninstall all apps and don't synchronize data. That would be your best bet, but even at that I think it is going to still have several short data sessions. You could also disable data via apn's and only enable them when you are using the phone for data.
I would highly suggest getting a data plan however. My last pda phone I didn't have a data plan and only used wifi. It was such a hassle and I would have been better off with just a basic phone than spending so much time to avoid data charges.
@razzledazle, ... it wasn't very helpful. Anyway I'm not in the US so I wouldn't get this offer anyway.
The problem I'm having is that even though I only activate the data connection when I use it, the sessions are very short and I still end up paying much more than I should. I'd like to find a way to keep the session alive till I deactivate 3g again.
Push
Still didn't find a solution myself. On a nokia, keeping the browser open does the job and keeps the session alive... but on the G1 it doesn't.
Running all your data through a VPN should do it, that way you are using a single connection that remains open.
Download droid wall from this forum and use the whitelist mode it might help you out a bit as only things you want will open a connection
Hey i know ive asked quite a lot of questions in the past but here i am with more.
1) I was wondering if there was an app to turn you data on and off so you switch from wifi to 3g data
2) I was also wondering how you can tell what your usage is mabye an app that doesn't count wifi as well.
There is an HTC Widget to turn the main radio off on the CDMA version. On my phone it is under:
Press "+" from the home screen-->HTC Widget-->Settings-->Mobile Network
On the CDMA phones that shuts down both voice and data. If you have a GSM version, i am not sure what it will do.
On the GSM version, if you just want to turn mobile data on and off but leave the phone "on", you can hold down the power button to bring up the "Phone Options" menu, and one of the options "Mobile network" - press this and it will toggle mobile data off and on.

Dave

There's a couple of good apps for turning data on/off. The one I prefer is APNDroid as it's got a notification icon that can be displayed in the taskbar to indicate whether data is on or off. Placing a shortcut on your home screen make it easy to change whether data is active.
The app I use for monitoring data is NetCounter which is easy to use and clear to understand.
I recently used them both on a trip to Dubai as I wanted to prevent data roaming charges. APNDroid deactivated the data connection and at the end of the week long stay, NetCounter was showing zero data usage during the trip.
Thanks im also abit worried about all the ads that come with apps or games do they use much data and when an app like taskiller shows them still running does that mean they are using data?
And if i got my phone a week ago will it have the latest and fastest rom?
There's an HTC widget that allows you to switch wifi on and off, thus swapping from 2/3g to wifi. Also, take a look at Y5, its good for managing when you have wifi on / off.
Florida.
Ok ill have a look i was more worried about apps running in the background as ive found that when you press the home button they don't actuallly exit.
I suggest that what you really need is Netsentry. This will monitor the traffic on all the Hero network interfaces (usb, Wi-Fi, 2G/3G) and warn you when any particular interface hits a user defined limit. It will also "self-reset" the counters according to a schedule that you define.
For example, say you are on Orange with their miserly 500mb data limit, and you're billing cycle starts on 1st on the month, you could set up Netsentry to warn you when you get to say 475mb, and automatically reset the counter on the 1st of every month.
I'm sure there are other apps that do something similar, or even better, but Netsentry seems to work well enough for me.

Dave
Hi Guys,
I am wondering what kinda data usage you can expect from the DZ per month. I plan to use it for occasional web browsing, weaher updates, email and calendar sync.
I would like to download and use different apps - but concerned do a normal app always need to be connected to the internet for it to run or does it run locally and only connects if it needs to download any data?
Any thoughts will be very helpful.
Thanks.

Apps will only access the Internet if/when they need to. So for a standalone app, that might be never.
So no, normally apps don't need to be connected to the Internet, unless that's part of their function (e.g. an online banking app that only works via the Internet to access your bank's servers etc).
Maybe I'm a little offtopic: is there any app that will show daily and monthly data usage for each application, but only data from the mobile network (no WiFi/USB)? It would be useful to know how much each app is using. With WM, I had SPB Wireless Monitor for that - so something similar would be perfect.
Audette: it's always better to get a data plan for a smartphone. Mostly much cheaper then pay-as-you-used.
darthmelk: try Check out "3G Watchdog" in the market.
I use 3G Watchdog, but it doesn't show data usage for each application (or I don't know how to display that?). That's the only thing it's missing.
There is one app that showed individual data usage, however this app itself was a massive drain on the phones CPU and battery so I would not advice using it.
In any event I forgot what it was called
I use about 500mb a month mobile data, but I use wifi whenever I can.
Try TrafficInfo or TrafficStats. They do show per application usage (sent/recieved). I just installed them yesterday and the TrafficInfo seems a bit nicer to me.
I am looking for an application that could show which application is currently downloading/uploading real time, something like netlimiter on the PC.
At traffic stats is what I was on about, watch out with these apps, by their very nature they will be a big drain on resources (and therefore battery life).
I had a quick try of Traffic Info. Maybe I was missing something, but this just seems to show Internet usage per application.
The problem is, it doesn't seem to distinguish between Internet usage via my phone carrier connection (which I'm more concerned about) and Internet usage via wireless (which I'm not concerned about).
Can anyone recommend an app which splits the two ? I would have thought that if something access the information at the correct level then it could differentiate.
I am using Network traffic counter (NetCounter) and quite satisfied. It does not track usage per application (and I don't really care...), but fully separate cell & wifi.
So far reached 735 MB on cell and 3 GB on wifi since got the phone on 9th November.
