Help! faulty xperia? - XPERIA X1 General

I've been having problems with the battery cover since day one really and now...after being in use from christmas day i can no longer secure the battery cover so that it doesn't jump off.
I bought my X1 from expansys and as it was a christmas present although it arrived on the 4th december, like i said before i didn't actually use it until the 25th. Xpansys only has a 10 day returns policy so i doubt i can go with that option.
Do you think sony ericsson will repair/replace the phone? I don't really want to send it in for either but i don't see what choice i have...at the moment the battery is way too exposed and that will probably only lead to more problems! I am very disappointed as the rest of the phone is great...and if it gets replaced rather than repaired i stand the chance of developing 'the crack' issue which so far this unit doesn't show any signs of. Please advise me on what i should do. Thanks.

I believe SE has acknowledged this problem so you should be able to take the issue up with them.

do a search on your problem. i think many people might have had the same problem and fixed theirs by slightly bending the sides.

Yes i know this...but no amount of bending can fix my problem.

I rang the xperia support line and they sent me a new back cover out...fixed my problem. Fits so that now its difficult to get it of haha! However it was a little scratched so they are sending me another one out soon. Excellent service! Worth getting a replacement back cover if you have this problem.

HTC are Utter Rubbish! edited - because I may have upset some users..

Sorry to say that I recently went from a wizard (which I've had for 18 months) to a hermes...disappointed doesn't even begin to describe my experience.
I had the 'brick' as I've come to call it, 3 days and already it's deceased.
Started getting the 'phantom taps' and now no TS at all.
Rebooted a dozen times and it just wont get past the screen alignment...in fact if you sit and watch it does it itself!
I even know what the issue is as it's been reported in the past but you'd think HTC would've sorted it by now.
HTC are palming off shonky goods as cutting edge.....really disapointed.
Did you flash a custom ROM onto it? Is it a hardware problem? In any case, it's covered by a warranty, you probably just got a defective unit. IMO, the upgrade from my wizard to hermes was a HUGE difference in performance and I'd never go back.
hardware related
Its hardware related....as the device gets warm (probably room temperature!) the screen expands and the TS membrane is pinched. All kinds of fun ensues!
There's no warranty on it..so it wont be going back.
Chalk another one up to experience.
if you have no warranty then you prob didn't pay much and you prob didn't get a new unit, and you prob didn't even get from a reputable place....so buyer beware...if the deal was to good to be true it prob was and did you ever think to ask yourself why the unit was for sale in the first place.
Assume a lot dontcha
It's brand new...from a friend who upgraded almost immediately to a HTC Touch.
You are correct though - didn't cost me a bean - shame my wizard's already gone....
oh..and while you're at it...get off yer high horse!
Assuming that I'm a dumb hick who'll buy anything that's cheap is a bit insulting..

If it's brand new from a friend, why not have him simply return the unit as defective??? Besides, just because you aren't the original buyer doesn't mean there is no warranty...
I have both a Wizard and a Hermes. Apart from the Wizard feeling like it is more rugged when it's in your hand, the Hermes is superior in every other way. And when you load WM6 onto the Hermes, it just blows the Wizard away completely.
If you know enough about this device to know that the innards are "expanding" and that something is being pinched by this, it sounds like you've taken it apart.
You're clearly not telling us the whole story in any case. If you ever want real advice for fixing your Hermes instead of just venting and not telling us what you've done to it to cause these problems, a lot of people here will be happy to help you.
BTW, I've found that doing a soft reset after charging it does a lot for any heat problems if this is truly the only problem you're having.
...several screen alignment "fixes" available on this website...
Lay off the guy
Look folks, the 'phantom tap' is a known and documented hardware issue with Hermes and has nothing to do with where/how/when/why the unit was acquired, nor for how much. Wise up (and shut up if you don't know what you're talking about).
To the OP: Don't give up so easily. In my experience HTC tracks the warranty by serial number. Call them and insist on an RMA. I was successful in getting one fixed free of charge. And guess what... I bought it on ebaY, and the warranty seal had been broken!
Btw, it's not the touch screen. Been there, replaced it, didn't fix it.
Thanks vp3G

Thanks for that man!
As it turns out the device was still under warranty and it's been returned...just waiting for it to come back!
Funnily enough when I had it the first time, the rom I put on it was your 'Black Satin'! Nice ROM, particularly the file explorer replacement!
Personally I didn't see much in the way of difference between the hermes and the wizard....but I did have it only for three days.
When I get it back I and test it out a bit more, I will gladly eat my words if it out performs the old wizard.
Anyway, I wasn't slating the hermes in itself..many of my friends have one p )..it was HTC themselves for still selling devices to consumers with a known fault.
Andy.

One dud BMW doesn't make BMW's bad cars. You got a dud, plain and simple. Return it for one that works.
HTC has impressed me, especially lately as they are trying to "redesign" the interface for windows mobile to make it actually usable.
BMWs are incredibly bad cars for the price they are sold for.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 no longer sold on o2!

Just called up to see if I could get my phone replaced due to a crack in the handset and the guy said that the structural defect is not covered even though I have sent it back before with the same problem.. the thought it sounded a bit fishy so went onto the o2 website to find that they no longer sell the device most likely due to the poor build even though that was supposed to be fixed with the new model, this means that any one wanting to get there phone replaced by o2 will be sadly disappointed.
damn, sorry to hear that mate, looks like i got mine just in time
a few weeks back, i complained of the cracks in the case, got told i would be sent a refurbished one when they received my one back from me.
i never sent it, and received a new one anyway. got lucky!
if i were you i'd complain like hell- there must be something they can do?! money off line-rental, different phone to replace x1?
vodafone did the same thing months ago but i'd send to SE cause you know they will
I'm gona complain like hell just like you said and get them to give me a new phone.. I do like my xperia but its got a crack running from the volume buttons to the battery cover making it really loose so the cover falls off sometimes and last time I took it back was because the volume buttons stopped working due to a similar crack!
might see if i can get an iphone just because I know the built quality is sound..
once i got my phone replaced i sold it immediately, yoг should have done the same. A lot of people were replacing the phones several times, so that could not be forever. Operators do not want to lose money =))

when this happened to me at vodafone since they no longer buy the x1 they sent me about 6 xperias all of them used.... some even having cracks......
So you might end up getting a used one :S
yeah, the one i got was 'refurbished', but i honestly could not find a fault with it, no marks, no scratches, no sign of wear.
BUT there is a little rattle coming from inside when i shake the thing... but it works perfectly well

cool! i think all xperias have that its something to do with the sliding mechanism

I would like my broken X1 back so I can send it to SE rather than having a refurbed model.

It's the optical joystick, at least on mine, that makes that light rattle. The sliding mechanism is solid.
Most have got lucky, phoned O2 on Wednesday 02/09 as phone won't conenct to internet, got told to send it back and they would sort out a repair/replace, got home from work yesterday and they had delivered a replacement. If it is a re-furb it is immaculate. so up to yesterday they were still replacing them

cheers, my old xperia had that optical joystick rattle, this is something else, but hey like i said... works good
now i'm regretting getting the xperia even though i do love it, might wait for the x2... does anyone know if it's coming out on o2?
see if i worked at 02 i'd of seen what a disaster the x1 was with the cracks ect and how many times this device had to get sent back and selling the x2 would be a risk, a gamble because the x1 caused so many problems - vodafone and o2 both saw these problems and vodafone dont sell ANY windows mobile devices now either so...
waiting for the xperia x10 now, phone contract doesnt run out till June :/ hopefully some good phones will be out by then. Thinking that android may be the way forward but might go for a blackberry or maybe even the iphone 3gs we will see.

I lost the backplate to my HD2 whilst getting very drunk last night :(

Anyone know where i can get a replacement backplate? I have googled forever today and came up with sqat. I sent an email to the HTC website hopefully they may get back to me soon.
Aha I did that last week and have totally bashed up the corners of the device dropping it on to concrete.
OMG, sorry to hear about your loss buddy, hope you get it sorted.
yer hurts to hear
http://www.easydevices.co.uk/pp/HTC_Accessories/HTC_HD2/HTC_HD2_EXTENDED_LIFE_BATTERY.html
cheap just to get you by for now....
If anyone has a bricked HD2 i would quite happily buy the backplate from them?
HTC replied to look at their website - duh, i already did that as explained to them. My O2 said they cannot find anything in stock lol
Madness
I am actually amazed that neither O2 or HTC are willing to supply me with a replacement backplate - HTC saying that they do not have them on their website, O2 denying all responsibility.
Wondering what my options are??
I'm actualy amazed that people are so rich to take their high-end mobile phones to party and waste themselves (with the phone). How about having old nokia pub phone? Or being more careful? I guess you should check ebay and other auction to find some destroyed HD2 for these parts.
Btw, how did you managed to lose the backplate? I cant even take it out most of the time (have to really try hard).

Agreed, I contacted HTC 3 times and each time they completely didn't even acknowledge the backplate question and just talked about my other points (sms etc). I have to say their customer service has so far been terrible.
I should hopefully be getting a replacement HD2 from vodafone in the next few days if I didn't have to give my old one back I might have been able to send you the backplate, though it was loose on one corner anyway... You might have to make do with the extended battery one for now till the backplate replacements come (surely they will come eventually?)
I think you are probably right about having to get the extended back cover/battery - which does not ship until march (its laughable)
Sorry mate but I couldn't keep the cover for you, the bloke checked it over this morning when he collected it, so extended battery (when it comes out) might be the way to go, or by then they might have the normal versions out?
I have a spare !!
Strangely enough, I actually have a spare backplate, for the HD2. I recently had to send back my HD2 for repair and had to remove battery and backplate before sending, when it was returned (within days 30thDec till 5th Jan, very impressed), it appeared with another.
Although it's always useful to have a spare, I would love to help out, I always come to these forums to find fixes and such, and not clever enough to normally help anybody out, however as luck would have it, this might be my opportunity
Let me know if I can help ........

'Patchy' backlight - what happen?

I've noticed recently the backlight on my HD2 seems to have suffered some sort of malfunction or something. Might be a bit of a strong way of describing it perhaps.
Basically imagine if you have a blank white screen/image showing on the phone, there's a couple of bits on it that always stay in the same place where the brightness is not the same as the rest. I'm certain it's only been like this recently but no idea why.
You can only really notice it with very pale or bits of white on the screen but am wondering:
1 - if anyone else has this,
2 - how it's happened,
3 - anything I can do about it,
In particular if it's a fault with the phone (as I'm certain the phone has never been knocked and it definitely has never been dropped or pressed hard etc), is this something I could get done under warrantee.
If it is, can I get it fixed on warrantee even with no receipt since I bought it on Ebay? Every single HD2 is still in its warrantee period so I hope they could do.
Thanks!
I have the same, they advised me to contact support, but i kinda neglected it for the time being.
I have the same kind of spot in the middle of my screen, i only really see it when the screen is white, annoying tho :/
I dont like the idea of having to send the phone out and missing it for a few weeks :'(
I had the same problem on my device so I called HTC and they picked it up, repaired it and sent it back. Well they sorted out this particular problem (by replacing the LCD panel) but, alas, created few more. The buttons were not placed properly, the body was damaged and etc. So Angry and Disappointed Me called them up and they picked it up again. This time they replaced the whole unit (the actual body if I am not mistaken) and sent it back. Finally I was glad to have my phone back after two weeks.
Funny enough most of the HTC employees that I spoke to had very poor English. And I spoke with quiet a few of them. Luckily I am talented at mimicking broken English and didn't have much problem getting my message across. I'd imagine for most people it should be very difficult to explain their problem and arrange repairs.
Thanks for the replies.
Is it possible to do this without a sales receipt and still not have to pay? I don't think I should have to pay since it's not very old at all but I can't prove it's actually my phone I guess.
Did you just contact them via the XDA website or something?
I got the same issue. Most annoying when reading long emails or articles. I thought about sending it in for repair but I have voided my warranty already and don't want to be missing my hd2 for a couple weeks and get hit with a massive bill. I think it has something to do with the layers in the LCD not being completely flat. But I havent got that far in my explorations of this phone, maybe I will on my next trip.
You should contact HTC support by calling at the number for your country that you can find from the HTC website.
They can do everything with the phone's serial no. At least that's how it worked for my Kaiser I got on ebay too when I had a prob with it.

Hmmm, good point. I have a custom rom on it so mine probably would be void too right? If I change it back to the original rom it should be ok though presumably?
Thanks anyway - glad this is not me.
I am also seeing this on my HD2. It is very faint and only really noticeable on white screens. Once you know it is there though you can't help but keep looking for it
To be honest I can put up with it as most of the time you can't actually see it, for example I can't see it now due to the keyboard being up.
I'd be interested to know if anyone in the UK sends their phone off for repair as I might do the same. I can't be without my phone though, it would be like loosing my arm!

I have a small crack on the glass of my HD2 as well between the bottom of the phone and the power / end call key. It looks like a small hair stuck under the button Not sure if they would replace the glass for me as well if I sent it off?
I got my phone from O2 so I'm wondering if I'd have to go to O2 for repair or direct to HTC, maybe I could do both
Anyway, for now I think I'll refrain from sending it off unless it really starts annoying me. A bit of a pain though
I've emailed HTC as well to ask about this.....

[REPAIR]HD2 random rebooting

Ok, i've given up.
My HD2 is driving me nuts, i've been taking it for granted for a long time, but i've decided to send my HD2 for repairs.
Maybe some users can identify themselfs in my symptoms and perhaps go for a repair as well. I'll try to keep you guys up to date on this situation.
Status:
18/10 - Received my repair ticket. Scheduled pickup tomorrow between 08:00 and 10:00 GMT +1.
19/10 - Phone got picked up by courier service, 8.30AM in the morning.
20/10 till 25/10 - No change in status and/or picked up!
26/10 - Decided to call after a prolonged status update. Summary of conversation: "Yes, everything is fine. No the status hasn't been changed, but you should receive your phone back in about a total of 2 weeks, so somewhere next week i guess."
27-10 till 2/11 -- No change in status and message.
3-11 - Received a package back with my repaired phone! Results: Boardswap, phone shutdown while diagnosing at the repair center. They even replaced my camera lens!
Total repair time due: 15 days
The following below describes the problems that occur (allot!), perhaps you can identify yourself in this as well.
Issie:
- Phone restarts (randomly) and holds at the HTC boot logo when back(bottom)cover feels warm-to-hot.
- Phone reboots when back(bottom)cover is warm, but not hot enough to hang at HTC boot logo, but soon after booting to Windows mobile, the device may reboot again.
Happens when:
- Browsing Internet (3G/HSDPA)
- Listening to Music (through SD card)
- Playing a game
- Having a (long) phone call the device
(temporarily) fix for issue:
1. Do a ‘Battery-Pull’ (extracting the battery) which shuts down the device.
2. Let it cool down for a couple of minutes until the back(bottom)part doesn’t feel warm enough anymore.
3. Re-insert battery, and restart phone.
4. If cooled down enough, the phone will restart correctly when powering up the device, until issue happens again, where step 1 needs to be done again.
The above mentioned issue don’t happen when the devise isn’t put under ‘load’ (I.e: use applications/browse(the web)/music etc). Putting the phone in sleep/standby or just sending a text message will not reboot the phone.
Tried the following official fixes:
- Hard Resetting the device > Issue remains.
- Updating to a new (official) ROM (RUU_Leo_HTC_NLD_1.48.404.2_Radio_Signed_15.28.50.07U_2.05.51.05_2_Ship.exe )
> Issue remains, even after a Hard reset with above noted ROM.
- Formatting and/or removing the SD card from the Device > Issue remains.
Tried the XDA fixes:
- Different Radios: Any radio in the official HD2 Radio topic
- Many different Roms
- Formatted the SD card, tried a different one, and even None.
Concluding:
Seeing to have tried all options relating to a software issue, I think this might be a hardware issue.
Contact with HTC:
Having sent some messages over with HTC they sent me this last message:
[name]
(Benelux Support
(Tech)) Close Pending Hi Maseo, Thank you for letting me know. It really sounds like a hardware issue. Please let us know if you need anything else. Kind Regards, 2010/10/18 12:42:46

My screen is still in mint condition, only thing that cracked if my camera-glass due to a bump against my table at home.. But more then that it's nothing.
I've noticed more people having the problem, so i thought maybe more people have my issues as well and could go for a repair after seeing this topic.

They will blame your problem on humidity in the device after the camera glass cracked. Did you change the camera-glass? I suggest you do that before you send it for repair otherwise you have to pay for the repairs as it does not fall under warranty (check on ebay for camera glass lens).
I think we're both in the same pickle:/
I am crossing my fingers they won't charge me.

I haven't. And a device breaking down from the camera end is highly unlikely.
It's impossible for me to replace it now as it's being picked up tomorrow morning. If they have to repair it, so be it. As long as it's not a outrageous high price..
You got experience in this, them blaming me in case of humidity, or you just guessing?

After speaking with their customer rep they pointed out to me that it is possible that the device malfunctions because of cracks leading to humidity and temperature problems. And that is not under warranty.
If your camera lens is cracked, it is easy for them to blame it on humidity due to the crack. This is a possible scenario, I can't predict but if we learned anything from repair under warranty, companies will to blame it on the customer before they fix it under warranty.
My advice to you is to cancel the pick up and reschedule another one later, go to ebay and buy a second hand glass lens and glue it yourself. It cost you less than 5$ to do that. Better than relying on their repair and end up paying hundreds of dollars. This way you eliminate the excuse of them blaming the defect on you.

Sounds plausible, but that wouldn't make sense in the way the device is manufactured. The CPU/GPU/Radio base i at the bottom. Any malfunctioning due to possible humidity in the camera would only lead to a malfunctioning camera, and that's not the case at this time.
Given, if i had more time i might have placed it, but i'm not in the occasion to do that right now.
I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed, im more afraid they'll go at you for a broken digitizer..

Double check this. Pull your battery and make sure that none of the pins are bent and touching each other. This has caused some issues, but not exactly the one you're describing but it can't hurt to check. If they are bent, straighten them out and see if the issue is resolved.

Thanks, but to no avail.
Those 3 pins were straight and sitting nice and snuggly against each other.
i also have a battery problem battery seems to be dying. under 30% phone becomes unstable. also sometimes doenst want to load or boot.
last 2 must be a connector problem (indeed it must be. put battery in without taking care to put contact points in the 3 little squares then the battery doesnt work)
ive mailed custumer service, it must be part of the warranty so i want a new battery

My problem has nothing to do with the battery at all.. don't hijack this topic for something un-related..
Day 2:
Phone is still enroute to HTC Service Center according to the Servicetracker..
how long does it take to deliver a phone i wonder..
My experience with HTC customer services
In the case of my HD2 (same symptoms):
Went back to Standard ROM/Radio/Bootloader Friday 17/09/10
Confirmed problem still existed on standard software 17/09/10
Called HTC customer services 18/09/10
Collection booked for Monday 20/09/10
Confirmation email received that phone had been received 21/09/10
Status changed from "Received your phone" to "Repairing your phone" 03/10/10
Status changed to "Awaiting despatch" (or something similar) 03/10/10
Received email confirmation phone was being shipped back to me 04/10/10
Received phone back with new IMEI (presume new motherboard) 05/10/10
All in all, I was without the phone for 2 weeks but I have no complaints about the service at all. A message telling me what they'd done to fix the problem would've been nice, but it's fixed and working perfectly so I'll forgive them for that.
After a week without my HD2, my spare phone was really annoying me due to it's lack of capability (HTC StrTrk) so I bought an Orange San Francisco, used it until my HD2 came back then sold it to someone I work with for what I paid for it.
Yeah, the fun thing is, is that the service center is almost figuratively around the corner, still they said it could take up to 2 weeks though.
I'm gonna get a Nokia 5800 as a lend-phone from a friend of mine.
I was looking into getting the Desire HD possibly this friday, but that's just too much as next to having the HD2, haha!
maseo im not trying to hijack anything!
maybe your sister if she looks nice.. so pls dont use that tone!
seems to be a battery issue with your phone so it seems with mine... it could also be a connector/motherboard problem so my post was on topic.
i submitted a problem to tech support and got a ticket they want me to call cust service to check my phone, i dont want to lose it for at least 2 weeks.
i want to get a new battery! so ill try to get that.
(also you reply a lot... do you want your posts to go up or something? )

Don't want to keep bumping it without no-reason, im just replying that's all ;-)
If it were a battery problem it would show other symptoms, ditto for the connector. Im more confident it's more hardware related, but to be precise what, i don't know.
A new battery is quite inexpensive, why don't you just get one? Saves you the hassle of getting (or trying to get) a new one through HTC.
Day 3 that my phone is underway, takes ages for a small trip by courier apparently ?

My god.. almost a week further, it's still enroute?!
how's it going on your end relic?
26/10: Decided to call after a prolonged status update. Summary of conversation: "Yes, everything is fine. No the status hasn't been changed, but you should receive your phone back in about a total of 2 weeks, so somewhere next week i guess."
