pRSS reader question - XPERIA X1 General

I use pRSS Reader which is really fine and I love it.
One question:
What does it mean to
"cache images within the feed"
"cache articles for offline reading"
???
I just don't get this phrases - english is not my first language...
Maybe I'll also explain: I want to download feeds and read them later on with pictues, without any need to reconnect to read it again.
Thanks...

caching means saving information on your PC/mobile for faster access. so you dont allways have to connect to the internet

a lot of questions in only 1 post.

Hi to all, I just bought my US T-Mobile Mda Vario.
So I have a few questions, please if someone more experianced than me can help me, most welcomed.
sorry if I ask for something that it is already in the forum, please be patient and if you can answer with the link were the comment is, well then great.
1- updating my wizard.
actually I have:
ROM - 1.8.10.2 WWE
ROM date - 12/10/05
Radio Version - 01.09.10
Protocol Version - 4.0.13.20
ExtRom Version - 1.8.10.104
CPU - OMAP850
Speed 195MHz
a) what steps do I have to follow in order to update my device?
b) I bought it used so I unlocked it using Lokiwiz. If I update the device, is the same as a Hard Reset? I am wondering if after this I will have to Unlock the Wizard again or not.
c) how sure is the updatting?
d) What about overclocking? is this sure? does it really makes any difference?
2- By default I have the Windows Media Player. Does it has an equalizer? Is out there any freeware program with "equalizer".
3- Is possible to watch the great cnettv.com in my device? How? (I have gprs and wifi internet conections).
4- Which StorageCard software is recomendable? I need one to fix eventual problems or one that can format my storage card.
5- only with the use of a software, the device is capable of GPS? or do I need an external receiver?
6- Can I sync through wi-fi or blutooth?
7- In Window 2003 SE , in the memory you could move the bar when you needed more storage or programs memory, why can´t this be done in windows 2005? or I am missing something?
Thanks for your time and patience
elloquito1
here are some answers :
1.u cannot move the bar like u were able to in wm2003 as wm5 has a different memory arcitecture the storage memory is no longer volatile...in simple words u have to stickto the avalaible memory but the advantage is wont lose data even if the battery runs out.
2.yes u can sync thru blue tooth not sure abt wifi.
3. u cannot simply use gps with a software (as far as i know)
4.get tcpmp for musiq its free and has an equalizer+tons of other options.
Hope this helps
You'll need a GPS receiver to be able to use GPS software with the phone. Overclocking can make a big difference to some software but is barely noticable with others.
great, thanks both for your quick answer.
as you seem to know much more than I do about overclocking, please guide me a bit.
do you recomend me to overclock my device?
whith which software? (any freeware one)?
how fast do you recommend?
all others who fills about posting a reply, most welcomed.
thnks again

DEFINITELY update your ROM. Use T-Mobile's instructions and files. You won't lose your unlocked status. You will notice nothing but improvements in the system. It takes all of ten minutes.
I would install smartskey (but some have had problems, search) it gives you more one handed operation, plus you can overclock with it. If not smartskey search for omapclockplus. Also there is a battery meter that does overclocking, maybe someone can chime in with a name so you can search for it. I'ms table with 240 mHz, other have gone up to 264 I think. Worst that happens is it freezes or soft resets.
You need a GPS reciever to use GPS software, but www.map4pda.com has some decent free software that will gove you access to google maps and MS maps.
You can sync through BT. Ihave had mixed results getting it set up. It will be cake one time...then after I format for some reason, its tough, then easy. But when set up its really nice. No syncing through wifi though (at least with active sync. I'm not sure if tere are any 3rd party progs that let you)
Also I think pocket mechanic can format cards, but I havent used it in a long time.

For overclocking, search the forums for omapclock and smartskey. Put them in the same folder, and change smartskey.ini to enable overclocking. I keep mine at 240MHz with no problems since day one - and I've changed ROMs about a dozen times now.
And yes, you CAN NOT sync over Wifi with the current active sync. IT's complained to security issue.
7- In Window 2003 SE , in the memory you could move the bar when you needed more storage or programs memory, why can´t this be done in windows 2005? or I am missing something?
You can look into Memaid
4- Which StorageCard software is recomendable? I need one to fix eventual problems or one that can format my storage card.
Not sure what you mean by that. I would recommend to format your card with computer. You can use Antontomov Pocket Mechanic Profesional to look over your card.
2- By default I have the Windows Media Player. Does it has an equalizer? Is out there any freeware program with "equalizer".
I use Conduits Pocket Player.
And use search, very helpful and quicker than waiting for answers

Because WM5 only uses dynamic RAM (SDRAM) for program execution, not storage. Now, storage ONLY uses flash ROM. This is why you don't have a slider any more.
(BTW, I recommend following my blog / my articles in general. I've explained a LOT of questions like this in there.)

NEVER use any Pocket PC-based tool to fix your cards, ONLY chkdsk (and format) on the desktop. Please read http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=39583 for more info on this q.

Ameo Micro Drive.....Perfect Now..Thanks Wu5262!!

Absolutely brilliant news (as far as I'm concerned).
Thanks to fellow member wu5262 for looking after his software so well and keeping it, he e-mailed anyone needing the file in question 'WM5torage'.
See attachment for upload.
This bit of software literally turns the Athena (as well as most other WM5 devices) into a mass storage device allowing one to transfer files directly to your SD card or Micro drive, as it will be recognized as a Drive on your PC.
It simply works wonderfully and completely eliminates the need to use the slow and unreliable ActiveSync application to simply move files from the PC to the device.
I was having problems moving large files in this manner via Activesync (AS) to the Micro Drive (MD) and AS would not cope with it on my Ameo but it works fine on the Dopod U1000, implying that the ROM on the Dopod variant is considerably better put together than others. Wu has had no major problems with his device since he got it.
I can now report that I have no issues with the UK version of the Ameo whatsoever!!
Using WM5torage, one can very easily transfer huge files directly to the MD. I just moved 2.4 GB of movies (3 DVD rips - my own legal copies ) in about 12 minutes!!
So no problems with the MD speed in this regard. I've also tested the movies and there is no corruption..everything works flawlessly!
Instructions on how to do it:
1) Download the attached WM5torage.cab...either directly to your device or any other way you want.
2) Install the cab to 'Device' and softe reset straight after.
3) Now to find the file;
Go to...My Device\Program Files\WM5torage.....there it is!
Good time to make a shortcut and place it somewhere more logical!
4) Copy the file from the folder and go to....My Device\Windows\Start Menu\....
Now click the menu button...bottom right corner of the screen...and select 'edit' ...then paste shortcut...rename the file 'WM5torage' (otherwise it will always say "shrtcut to WM5torage") that's it...we're good to go!
5) Finally return to the start menu and you should see it there...WM5torage!!
Connect your USB lead to PC & Ameo/Athena. Don't worry if Active sync says error or even connects...just shut down any pop-up messages or Active sync.
6) On your device under your start menu, Simply click WM5torage (it will say 'Inactive' - hence the reason why nothing happens when you plug your USB lead into the device and PC)...and select Activate.
Immediately your PC should start to recognize your USB mass storage device....be patient and then a window will show up as if you had plugged in a USB device or inserted a memory card into your PC.
You can check what device has now been recognized as a drive under 'My Computer' on your PC.....it'll say something like L:drive or similar depending on your PC's configuration.
Happy fast transferring.
Don't forget to 'Deactivate' WM5torage when your finished otherwise Active Sync might not recognize your device the next time you want to sync with your PC.
Let us know how you got on.
All thanks to wu5262...Cheers mate.

woah another long post mostly 99% garbage. Anyways all laptops come with built in card readers. my laptop has all mini-sd micro-sd sd every card reading capability. And thats much faster than athena's and activesync. lol this is so unneccessary because i never transfer files via USB... slow as hell. Always use internal ^^
Go and find something productive to do.

Glad it's all working out for you....I cannot be bothered to get into another argument with the likes of you.

Look, Nuclear, what is your problem? why you are saying his post is garbage? are you just unhappy because you haven't got your HTC Advantage? Well, mate you have to wait more so cool down.
So you are going to use card reader to transfer file? I would love to see how you can plug the Micro Drive in the Card Reader !!
Goodness me..I just realized you haven't even got your Athena yet...so you couldn't possibly understand why I posted this 99% garbage post.
Apply that remaining 1% to your existing 1% of intelligence...you'll need it for the Athena. Sorry for calling you names just now..din't know at the time that you were retarded.

Nice to hear your have no problem as well now.
I was just playing with remote control just now, hehe, i was using my DOPOD U1000 to control my Vista, nice! Will show it to my friends tomorrow, and they will all say: "wow, how did you manage to install vista on your Athena!"

you need to enable remote control on your pc, you need the IP as well. i personally have a static IP, so it's quite easy to set up. user name and password is the same on your pc.
I have to say this, if you haven't done remote control before, it might be quite hard to set it up.
I will try to post some screen shot later on.

Hi wu, I remember using the following Registry Settings on my Terminal Services and this was the only way I could get a reasonable speed on it.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client]
"BitmapPersistCacheSize"=dword:0000000A
"BitmapCacheSize"=dword:000005DC
"Keyboard Layout"="00000409"
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Terminal Server Client\Default]
"BitmapCachePersistEnable"=dword:00000001
Also I definitely agree with you! Crossbow and WM5 Terminal Services are way too different! Crossbow is awesome for this!I hope this helps!

Remote Shutdown of PC from WM5?

Does anyone know of a freeware program that can remotely shutdown the home PC from a Wifi network? I found a free Wake-On-LAN program and I can turn on my computer from anywhere in my home with it, but I don't have the means to turn it off. Thanks.
Using a VNC client on your phone and the server on your pc you could remote in and shut it down as if you were in front of it.
Hmmm, call me ignorant but I just wonder what putpose does it serve? If it is a home network and your house is not as large as CENTRAL PARK New York you should be able to actually walk to your computer and shut it down instead of sitting room next door and do it from there!
How much more lazy the human race can get?

note that he mentioned swhithing a pc on using wake on lan - thats why he mentioned his house - lan limitation. the real purpose of what he looks for would be turning your pc off while being away.
Curious D: i didn't hear of any app written especially for this, but for example emule can do it. if you use emule on your home pc - try checkin out it's mobile client - mobiemule - a java applet that lets you manage your downloads as well as turning your pc off. if it's not suiteble for you, i would suggest setting up apache server with a special php code on it, execing an app to close windows and then using your phone browser to access this php code. a bit of a workaround but in my opinion the easiest. (i used to controll winamp this way
This might be a solution! I did not digg in to it because of such tasks are not interesting to me but I am sure you can do what you need to do with it:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/expert/bridgman_02june10.mspx
it's another option, yes it is possible but not very handy. i know setting up apache or any other web server is not very handy task neither. i would just code a simple app for desktop pc that would listen on telnet port and after receiving specified command would shut windows down. maybe even code a simple version of "web server" so it would be accessed using web browser? huh, i'll try in my spare time ;]
:update:
i could wrap up an application that would sit launched at your pc and listen for a connection. you would have to open a web browser (not only at your phone, it could be anything computer like and browse for an adress like:
http://your.ip.address:some_port/specific_command
to force my application to perform any action. it could be shutting down your windows or anything else.
note - it requires you to have a public ip address, and you would have to forward some_ports for it in your lan - just like any other serverlike application. would you be interested? it is quite easy so i can do it for you. cheers
Thanks for all the replies.
Raceit: I thought about VNC, but my VNC program incorporates an RC4 encryption which isn't supported for the WM5 platform at this time (at least I couldn't find any. This would be the ideal situation since then I can control my computer from my phone to do some simple operations. (I can do this already with my laptop, but it takes a long time to start up whereas the phone is fairly immediate)
Banannq: No no...Junner2003 is right. I AM lazy. I'm actually looking for it because there have been some nights that I remembered I forgot to shut down the computer and when you are in bed, you don't really want to go across the house to shut something off. I'm a light sleeper and when I wake up, I think about stuff. The idea that you had is over my head. Thanks for the offer for setup, but it seems I would have to open my firewall which I would rather not do. Again, thanks.
Junner2003: Thanks. I'll look into that link from Microsoft.
Curious D: too late mate, i already did the base of program ;]
now i can only finish it ;] it receives a message from a www browser and all i need to do now is to make it respond with an action, which is quite easy job - i'll add a procedure of shutting windows down and i'll upload it somewhere this evening. if you want it, you can get it, if you prefer not - no problem. for me it was a good oportunity to code something new ;]
forget evening. it's done. remember it is very simple...
so you need to launch included exe file on your windows machine. i tested it on xp, it should also work on older OS's, but i cannot be sure.
as i said - if you have lan at your home (and probably you have if you use your phone to connect to wifi) you need to access your router menu to allow connections to the pc my app is running on. depending on manufacturer it is done a bit different but still quite simple. you need to find a function called "port forwarding" and set up a new rule. You allow traffic to "your pc ip number" on "99" port (thats my app specification). you basicly need to allow traffic via tcp, but can be also tcp+udp
when it's done thats it.
providing that the programm is running, you can first try opening you pc's browser and type a specified url in your browser:
http://localhost:99/hello_world
you should see "/hello_world" message in return.
you can then try
http://ip_address:99/some_message
your ip can be checked by typing "ipconfig" in command line (windows_start>run>cmd) on your pc.
then you can do the same on your phone : http://your.pc.ip.address:99/message
if it works it means that everything is ready to go. then go:
http://your.pc.ip.address:99/shutdown
and that should do the magic.
i hope it's quite clear for you, if not - please ask. i'll try to help you if you think my program would be worth it ;]
i hope you like it
Wow. That's really cool. Thanks. I'll look into it more on my next day off. (Schedule's a little wacky, but it brings food to the table) Thanks again. Out of curiosity (not asking for more because you have already been very generous with your time and effort), can something be set up without port forwarding? If it is within a home network, can something be setup like VNC (without the remote desktop) simply to shutdown a computer within my own Wifi network?
Yes, should be possible either if you use STATIC IP ADDRESSES (which is always a problem if you have a linksys router) or just via computer name in the network: " \\MyComputerName " (you will have to turn file sharing in for that!)
Cool. I'll try it soon. Thanks again.

[Q] Sending links to the blackstone

This has been something that has bugged me ever since I started using WinMo, hopefully there is a simple solution that I have just over looked.
1) If im browsing the web on my laptop, I have to go out for whatever reason, is there a quick/simple method of sending the web address to my blackstone? ie without having to type it in one the phone. So that I can continue browsing on the move?
Ideally it would be as simple as right clicking on the webpage > Send to > Blackstone, then having the same webpage open on the blackstone... Is there any way to do this? Is it even possible?
Doesn't ActiveSync (check Favorites) work for you?
You can also use http://www.mymobiler.com/
It works over ActiveSync and WIFI (well at least within your own subnetwork .
Alternatively you could create a QR-barcode from the URL (for example on this page http://qrcode.kaywa.com/) and then use a codereader on your cell phone (QuickMark http://www.quickmark.cn/ works great on the Blackstone).

From IE7 > Tools > Create mobile favorite > I had tried that on my Atom Life device, but it never worked properly. The mobile favorites would sync, but then the next time I connected the device, to my PC they would vanish.
Also, wouldnt this only create a favorite for IE mobile? Plus the hasstle of having to delete the favorite if it was just one article I was reading.
It would just be nice to have the option to "throw" my current page over to my Blackstone. From IE7 and have it open in opera.

This is actually the method I have been using for the past couple of weeks. It works well. But I can't help but feel like there are still more steps to take than should required.
My initial post was inspired by being half way though reading an article on a website I wouldnt usually visit. At which point a friend who I was meeting pulled up outside an beeped his car horn (meaning "im not coming in, hurry up"). As a result I had to leave my laptop on until I returned.
With all of microsofts talk about widgets etc, it just seems odd that there is no quick and easy way to send a simple link from a Vista computer to a WinMo device without having to load up other programs. E-mailing the link to myself is another solution, but again... it just seems like a long road for a shortcut.

UpToDate fix with Full working Internet Explorer 6

Hi,
This is my first post and hopefully it may be helpful.
I have created a nice solution in order to run both UpToDate and Internet Explorer 6.
This solution was originally posted in this thread, but as long as this may not be visible, I have started a new thread
What you will NOT need
1) You will not need Fix UpToDate by doctorcete.cab
2) You will not need to cook your own rom
What you will need
1) Fix IE.cab
2) The files, which are attached at the end of this post.
Instructions
There are 2 different versions.
Version 1 - Best - If you use MortScript
1) Use the two .mscr files.
2) Each of those files contains a registry modification and after that it executes Uptodate or IE respectively.
Be careful: If you installed UpToDate in a different location than the default you should manually open and edit the file UpToDate.mscr and replace "\Program Files\UpToDate" with your installation pathway. (You can use Notepad to open the file)
3) You can use these files to launch the applications instead of the default shortcuts.
2nd version - If you do not use Mortscript
1) Use the 2 reg files
2) Before opening each application, run the corresponding .reg script
3) Files are universal independent on your installation location. Therefore no change is required.
I hope you enjoy.
Step2p
I can only launch it trhough mortscript then, not the default shorcuts right? or am I missing something?
@doctorcete
You should build new shortcuts pointing to mscr files.
If you want to have also the correct image on those shortcuts, you can download the file attached.
UpToDate shortcut will only work if it is installed in the default location (/Program Files/UpToDate)
If you have another installation location, you should manually edit the shortcut and fix it accordingly.
EDIT: If you want to use these shortcuts place the mscr files in folder "/Program Files"
Step2p
I don't want to hijack this thread, but has anyone been able to find a hack to increase font size within UpToDate?
good work step2p, it works alright with the shortcuts, congrats!, im very happy uptodate is finally getting some attention (after 6 or 7 months since the problem was discovered). Thank you!....
Fix UpToDate by doctorcete.cab
Dear All,
I still prefer to use Fix UpToDate by doctorcete.cab. I don't like IE6 any way. The simple solution is to run Fix UpToDate.cab. You can set Opera as you non-default browser, and Opera still works fine.
so what does this do? use PIE as the manilla internet browser???
what i imagined it would do is make PIE better with zoom, so might be able to zoom a bit better and it might be a bit faster? can anyone explain to me please?
Thanks
UpToDate is an Electronic Medical Database for Medical Drs
If your are not a Medical Dr. You don't need to read this thread
good job... it works nice.
Good evening to all,
I know this is not the appropriate thread to post this but i do hope to get some help
I have installed a trial 17.2 on my pc.does anyone knows which file is held responsible for expiring the trial version in the registry?
cheers
V
how can i check the version of IE?
Don´t mind the version of IE. If UpToDate works out of the box (without any hacks) then you do not need this. If it doesnt work. Follow the steps as described above on the first post, Then it will work.
great work guys. any way to have finger scrolling work?
Hey,
Just wanted to say that UpToDate works perfectly without needing any fixes if you access it through a proxy connected to your medical school, assuming that's an available option. It doesn't work using opera but does with IE, including zooming, etc.
well that's if you use an internet connection be it a data connection or wifi. this discussion is about uptodate completely on the phone (flash card) requiring no internet. thanks though

Oh, I assumed it still connected to the internet to access some kind of database. So this program alone contains ALL of the information that's available online!?? That's pretty amazing if it does, especially if it updates with new articles. I'll have to look into this now...
Yeah, it's huge >2GB. If you subscribe, there should be an option for them to deliver a DVD to you for you to use with your Palm/Windows Mobile device. UpToDate updates periodically, currently it's version 17.2. Articles are not updated on a rolling basis, but rather in increments corresponding to new versions. The flash card version actually does not update automatically. So whatever version you initially received, it'll remain that version with the same articles. The only way to update articles is to get the new version. Fortunately, the updates do not occur that often and medicine doesn't change drastically between versions.

Ok, I haven't gotten this to work. I'm not quite sure what to do with the files. I'm using a Sprint Touch Pro. I placed both files in Programs/Mortscript. I can get everything up, but when i go into the drugs and press headings, it freezes. Any advices?
