I'm having a problem with ringtones ...
When I assign ringtone to a contact, everything is fine, until I syncronize with Outlook.
After that individual ringtones per contact get lost and on incoming call I have default ringtone.
Does anyone have same problem ?
How to get around it ?
Can someone help ? My ringtones are in \Windows\Rings directory and they are wma files
If that makes any difference
Well, I guess once you sync your contacts with outlook, you'd definately lose your ring tones!
For now, try not to sync your contacts, unless that's why you sync in the first place...
I've posted something similar on here with regards to losing information when syncing between phone and outlook.
Only suggestion would be is to only change the contact info on your phone and not outlook and to ensure that under the conflict settings, phone wins over PC.
In ActiveSync I have an option that for "Contacts" if there is a conflict - Phone data wins. But still ... same problem.
And what is interesting too, is that when I had HTC Wizard with WM6.0 (never tried WM6.1), my ringtones were OK even after full resync
Strange indeed. Pass on that one!

I can't find an easy way to display my list of people I phone (about 110) without it being mixed in with all my contacts that Outlook has gathered from email (1766). I can call them up via SIM manager but it takes about 30 seconds to build the list .... and I'm not sure whether people I add in here are reflected in my Contacts and vice versa. I'm sure there's a market for an app that manages email and phone numbers separately
Mike
why ?
i moved all my sim contacts to outlook as soon as i got the xda
havent had any reason what so ever to have any on the sim
Two reasons really:
Searching through a huge list while driving is much more difficult than it used to be on my ordinary cellphone with just 100 plus entries, and secondly MS Voice Command (I think) has to build a database for all 1700 outlook contact entries - I think this might be why it's misbehaving.
...... but I don't see anyone else complaining about this, so maybe I'm just working in some weird way
Mike
Create a sub folder in outlook, and move all your email contacts to that folder, then of course you'll need to tell outlook, through the options, the location of the new folder to use for your email address book.
Then leave all your phone contacts in the default contact folder, and this is the one active sync uses when syncing.
This is all due to a limitation in Active Sync whereby you can't specify the folder to be used for syncing, even though, of all things, Nokia PC Suite will do this, whilst microsoft's own solution WON'T.
The other alternative some use, is to use CATEGORIES.
By tagging all your phone contacts with a category label, say for example phone, then you CAN set up activesync so that when it syncs, ONLY contacts of a certain Category are synced.
Hope this helps fit your problem.
Hey .... both of those suggestions sound good. I will experiment. Am I right in thinking though, that I then won't have any email addresses at all in my XDA2. I guess I can live with this, as I'm generally only replying to emails with the XDA2
Mike
the way i do it is to have a category in outlook; i use the category of peronal which is out of the box outlook and then in active sync you have the option of synching only people in a categoy. i have outlook 2003

Er that depends.
Now I'm not sure what your original question meant?
The follow up implies that you do want Email address contacts on the XDA2.
So in simple terms, either you do want them, or you dont.
If you want a more prescriptive choice, let me know a bit more detail of what you are hoping to acheive, and I will let you know if there is a way or a workaround for it....
If only SOME contact records containing an Email address are needed by you on the XDA2, then just also tick them as a "Phone Contact" in the Category field, and these will then sync accross if you use Categories as the method.
Let me know exactly waht you mean...
actually your summary of what I want is pretty spot on. A few email addresses and ALL my phone contacts on the XDA. All my email addresses on the PC (I don't really care about the telephone numbers being on the PC). I followed your advice - but didn't think it through properly. I deleted all my contacts on the XDA, then set active sync on the PC to synchronise only the contacts I'd marked as phone contacts. Of course when it sync'd it decided to wipe out ALL the contacts on the PC. No matter - I have a backup - but incidentally I found that with just the 118 contacts from my SIM card loaded into the XDA, both Voice Command and Fonix were dramatically imroved.
Mike
If you open contacts, and then tap on the w, m, h, or e, you will see the available contact details for each person. Just set it to display what you want and it will be remembered between syncs.
IE. Joe Bloggs with a mobile (m), e-mail (e) or work phone (w), home phone (h). If you want the mobile phone number displayed, tap on the letter and choose M.

hello all,
anybody using outlook 2003 yet? i'm having problems synching my contacts properly...seems that there is proper synching but when you use your device, some categories are missing, some contacts don't display the same info as in outlook, etc.
so i'm wondering, is it outlook 2003 or should i hard-reset my device(which i'm not too keen on doing)?
any feedback i will greatly appreciate
Thanks,
bree
Hey
Ive used Outlook 2003 ever since I got my XDA 2 so i'm not terribly sure what the syncronisation of contacts was like in previous versions.
To put it simply, if I get some info I want to add as a new contact, I usually wait until I go home and just put the info on the phone temporarily as a note. Many fields are missing, like "other telephone number" and proper formatting of the 'display name' is not possible directly off the phone... e.g. If I save a new contact on the phone as "Tom Smith", im stuck with it being saved as "Smith, Tom" until I open Outlook 2003 to change the display name there.
Also confusing, but not really a problem anymore is Business in Outlook is called Work on the phone... e.g. 'Work Telephone'.
I havent noticed any other problems, except that Outlook 2003 only synchronises the main e-mail inbox even though the phone will display empty folders for everything else such as sent items and custom inboxes.
Unless you're having some sort of other problem you wouldn't get any improvement from a hard reset. Let me know if what you're experiencing is different/worse.
Ash
Had the same problem with name being swapped around to Surname, Forename but found a solution! When creating a new contact on the phone click the down arrow next to the name field and enter the whole name in the Last Name field. This will then save the contact in the format Forename Surname. The contact will also be saved correctly in Outlook 2003 unless you specifically want Surname,Forename formatting.

ey, thanks for the replies guys, as for the above situation, you can go to the mail options section in activesync then check the appropriate boxes for folders you want to sync.
using activesyn 4.2 i still cannot get my outlook contacts to sync with my 838pro. some files sync, some do not; email YES; contacts, favorites NO.
what's my next move?
could i have problem with the computer, a tablet pc running outlook 2003?
very frustrated
thanks

CONTACTS NAMES HAVE TO BE COMPLETED CORRECTLY. COPY ALL OF YOUR CONTACTS, TO A SUB FOLDER OR ALTERNATIVE FOLDER. DELETE FROM YOUR OUTLOOK ENTIRELY ALLOW THE SYNC TO DELETE FROM YOUR PPC.
THEN COPY, ONE BY ONE BACK, ALLOW EACH TO SYNC, AND CHECK. THEN YOU WILL FIND THOSE THAT SYNC, THOSE THAT DONT, AND START TO IDENTIFY THE ERRORS.
ONCE CONTACTS HAVE SYNC'D, YOU CAN THEN CHOOSE WHICH YOU DONT WANT SYNC'D BY CATEGORIES, PERHAPS YOU HAVE INADVERTANTELY DESELECTED SOME CATEGORIES.
some files sync, some do not;
FILES, IE USING YOUR DESKTOP SHORT CUT, OR DO YOU MEAN DATABASE ENTRIES?
email YES; contacts, favorites NO.
SOME FAVOURITES ARE JUST A PAIN. RELOCATE ALL THE ITEMS ON YOUR DEVICE TO AN ALTERNATIVE LOCATION \WINDOWS\FAVORITES.
DE SELECT THE SYNC FAVORITES. ONCE YOUR PPC FOLDER IS EMPTY, ALSO WIND BACK, OR REDUCE THE AMOUNT YOUR SYNCING FROM YOUR PC.
THEN SELECTIVELY, WHILST CONNECTED COPY 1 BY 1 ACROSS. I FOUND THAT SOME LINKS, OR SOME SYNC'S JUST DIDNT WORK. WHICH STOPPED ALL FROM SYNC'ING.
IT IS GENERALLY RECOMMENDED THAT FAVORITES ARE CONTROLLED BY ONE DEVICE OR THE OTHER, NOT USING COMBINATIONS.... THIS WAS AN OLD 2003 ISSUE, NO SURE IF RESOLVED.
what's my next move?
SYSTEMATIC AND METHODICAL TESTING... IF ALL ELSE FAILS,
1. REMOVE THE PARTNERSHIP, AND RE-PAIR
2. HARD RESET THE DEVICE....
could i have problem with the computer, a tablet pc running outlook 2003?
HIGHLY UNLIKELY TO RELATE TO THE TABLET PC STYLE.
Sorry for the shouting... I was just trying to delineate my comments from yours.
Thanks - I am going to start my trial and error now; will report back after 875 contacts are organized properly! Cheers...
i cant check the checkbox for contacts in syncing using activesync 4.2
what are the possible reasons?
Contacts do not sync - with activsync
Hi
I also have the same problem. I have a t-mobile MDA vario II and normal windows xp computer. I had no problems synching contacts with my orange spv c500 - easy as pie. Now with my vario ii it just refuses I have tried:
1. deleting the partnership a few times
2. hard resetting the device
Neither work.
In fact after the first time the partnership is set up, I found that the tick box to select to synch the contacts was greyed out. This is really frustrating. I take the point above that some contacts work and others might not, but why should this work perfectly well with the SPV and not the MDA?
Many thanks for any suggestions
Having just got an O2 XDA Orbit I had exactly the same problem with my Outlook Contacts not being synched.
I discovered that if I edited the contacts in Outlook in anyway (eg. adding and deleting a space) then the contact was then synched to my phone.
I have never had any problems on my XDAII, Jasjar, nor Jasjam... So not sure where your problems are coming from.
I have multiple sync systems working left right and centre and all appear to be working as I would expect. All I can think of is that you are using incorrect activesync, or incorrect outlook versions, or as above, just edit a couple. Alternatively, follow my previous post, ie create a sub folder, move all of your contacts to the subfolder. Delete all the ones on your device that didnt sync inthe move, copy one across, did it sync, yes ok, move on, if not, investigate, and so on and so forth.
Figured it out
For some reason it was not clear at the and now I don't know what changed, but it works so who cares.
All I did was go into activesync,
Tools > Options and check the contacts box.
For some reason before this was greyed out. At least I can now use this expensive device. Yay!!
On Windows Vista i used to sync my phone through the Windows Mobile Device Center, and Microsoft Outlook, and get all my contacts from phone to the pc, and if my phone was hooked up also, if i add a new contact or change a detail of an older one in MS Outlook, it would immediately take change in my phone also..
Now a couple of weeks ago i put up Windows 7, and install the Outlook Connector, and now when i connect my phone, it wants to send all the hotmail contacts that i have right into my phone, which i dont want ofcourse, and if i try to delete them, they would delete from my address book and from MSN Messenger also! so im stuck here, im not even hooking up my phone to the computer cause otherwise i'll have my whole phone's contact list messed up with a bunch of email addresses of a bunch of people that i dont need on my phone, and that i cant delete cause i dont want to lose them from my computer or my MSN list either.. this is stressing!! hahaha, so if anyone had this, or knows how to set the Outlook/Connector/WMDC to keep outlook(hotmail) contacts on my computer and sync my phone contacts in a diferent folder without mixing them together, please, it would help me a lot!
EDIT: when i installed windows live on the phone, i unchecked the option of syncing my hotmail contacts, so thats not whats causing it, its purely because of Outlook..
Running Outlook 2007 - Connector - on XP sp3
When I set-up the Hotmail contacts installed to a separate address book. So my Outlook contacts are in "Contacts" whilst the Hotmail are in "Contacts in n****@hotmail.co.uk"
I know that you don't have Activesync which only sycns the main contacts folder. Are there other options in W7 version of AS (sorry can't remember the name). Do your hotmail contacts show in a separate contact folder?
I've lost my outlook connector toolbar and can't remember if it had additional settings.
Nev
in windows 7 i have windows mobile device center, and now i only have 1 "contacts" folder. thats the main problem i think, thats why everything is in the same "contants" , i remember a while ago, when everything used to work good, i did have a "Contacts" and seperate i had "Contacts in [email protected]"
any idea how to add/seperate them?
Not sure... Have tried uninstalling - but didn't seem to dump all of the data and on re-install has done every thing automatically..
see here
I tried to re-install to see if there were any additional setting, but I didn't remove properly.
Have a look under the account settings. You should have two data files... Are the mails being delivered to a different mailbox?
i still cant figure this out!
now i know the problem is that i have the same "contacts" folder both for my outlook contacts and for my hotmail contacts,,, i need to seperate them.. if anyone knows how?
I know I am possibly overlooking this, but with my iPhone I was able to assign a ringtone to a specific contact. Is there anyway I can get that setup on the Galaxy S?
I must confess I didn't try before and it took me some time to find it ( not so much time actually but I am surprised to have less possibility than the iphone)
On the iphone you had easily the possibility to set one ringtone by person ( it was not that easy to get a ringtone )
In the samsung you can set a ringtone by group.
So you could create a group per person to get one ringtone per person
On my side I will just put my wife in a group and set the ringtone from Jaws movie
Ok, that is kind of complicated ;-)
another question to ringtones... Maybe I just didn't find it. But how can I set a mp3 as a ringtone. If I try to select a ringtone it only shows me the shipped ones. Or do I have to copy the mp3 to the folder where the shipped ones are stored (and that would be?)?
Thanks, Kai
This is indeed complicated
For the first question, SGS allows setting ringtone to both contacts and groups. However, they will only work with ringtones created in the phone. They will not work with ringtones synced over from Google or outlook. In order to assign ringtones to these contacts, you need to
1. Create a contact in your phone and assign the ringtone
2. Link the contact to your synced contact
For assigning MP3 as ringtones, you can try ringdroid. Alternative is to copy to /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones.

I have assigned MP3 ringtones individually just by doing a long hold on the contact, choosing Edit, and then touching Ring tone, and choosing sound. I can then choose my MP3 that is stored anywhere on the phone, even on the external SD.
For individual SMS tones, I use SMSPopUp, very customisable.
I have been trying to assign ringtones to a particular contact but cannot achieve this. I know there is an options under Contact - menu - Edit, but nothing. I get some strange message that ' I cannot edit SNS...'. I'm thinking this have something to do with facebook, as my contacts are synced with facebook. Does this have an effect on having to assign different ringtones to contacts?
I have also a problem with individual ringtones each contact.
If I use the standard app in SGS, i am able to set a ind. ringtone for a contact. But I want to use a app like touchdown or roadsync for do my mail stuff. And I dont like to have contacts in more than one place so I habe all my contact in my outlook. I set the sgs that only the contacts in my business mail client are shown and I cant set a individual ringtone. Is ther no possibility for do that without copying contacts to the phone? No app? Cant belive that this is not? On handcent sms I can set ringtones per contact, no matter where its saved.
Thanks for replying!
To be able to assign a ringtone to a contact, it has to be stored in the phone. It doesn't work for contacts synced from Facebook or Gmail. Just create a duplicate contact on your phone, assign a ringtone to it and link them together.
Sent from my GT-I9000M using XDA App
Really no alternative?
I dont want to see the contacts twice in the phonebook.
You can link them together so you'll only see one.

Now I have to find out how i can copy s contact to the phone
Hi there
I'm running touchdown 2.0 on my sgs and there is a function to copy all contacts from touchdown account to the phone book on the phone. I did that, touchdown is processing all contacts, but if i go contacts an put the settings to see only the contact located in the phone, I dont see any contact. Are they not copied or is my phonebook corrupt? How can I find out where contacts are located, which folder in the system, i.e. with root explorer?
Thanks in advance for helping
