Android System Update - G1 General

I was wondering, If I did a system update for my Google Android, would it require Re-Activation via google?
I don't want to update if it requires one since my Google Android Phone isn't on a data plan. I activated via Wi-Fi. Or is there an alternative to update, and not have to re-activate.
PS: While on my Google Android phone, there was a message pop-up saying that there was an update available ( I have RC29-[ or lower, not sure exactly] ) && By System Update, I mean the actual Firmware(OS)
Thanks in advance.

if your plan on modding your phone...hold off on the update...keep denying it for now....read the forum why....

Oh ok. Thanks.

There is code in the OTA script that will apply the update without your consent if you decline a certain number of times. If your running a version lower than RC30, your best bet is to delete the OTA Certificate ASAP so the update script fails whenever it tries to run.
As for the OP's question: It depends on what update your trying to apply. an OTA update from Google will not do a factory reset, but some homebrew (such as themes for example) will reset your device to factory.

):
Oh. Yikes.
I have denied it about 10 times now.
How do I delete the OTA script?
I don't want to lose homebrew options.
Now that you bring this up, how do I install homebrew & Themes?

You have to have a MOD RC installed (preserves root). The instructions and the method for applying fonts and themes are in the other sub-forums.

Update problems

I tried to install the new update on my Hero. I was rooted with the universal root program. During install my phone freezes and i get an !. I unrooted with the same program and I still get the same thing. My wife's stock hero installed just fine. When I try to install again it says the download is corrupt and asks me to re-download it. I've tried it several time with the same result. Any suggestions?
I had to re-install the old update from htc.com to get back to factory. I then updated to new one OTA, but now I can't root it anymore. I was using the universalandroot also and it won't root again. I'm going to try a different root method and hopefully it works.
I think I might know why your downloads are classified as corrupt.
If you used Regaw's root method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572 towards the bottom there is a section called

I don't think that's it. Cause I didn't use that method. I read somewhere on here that if you've removed/uninstalled some of the sprint apps, then it's not going to update because the update involves updating one or more of those apps. When the update doesn't find those apps, it fails.

Maybe that's my issue. I did get rid of some of the stock apps I don't use.
Does anyone know what stock apps may have been updated with this? The only one I can think of would be peep. Is there a place I could get that .apk to reinstall and try to update again?

It's not mandatory to get it, but i want to eliminate the dialer lag. I think if I just reinstall the stock apps I could to the OTA update.

No its not. Your phone will still work just fine without it. But if you do want to incorporate the new fixes, install nfinitefx's new .7 ROM that has all the fixes/updates in it, and you won't lose root this way either.

[Q] Stop ota update

After successfully getting my root and android market working, I would like to make sure that my fire does not update itself and i lose all of my hard work. What is the easiest way to make sure that I will not recieve ota updates? I have seen some people recommend droidwall, are there any other options?
Thanks in advance.
to unregister at amazon is confirmed
I have used http://market.android.com/details?id=com.stericson.permissions to disable the permission

but how do i use all of my kindle services such as streaming and such.
you get one or the other. I would not expect a lot of updates from Amazon, but you never know.
Can you re-register at any time after you deregister?
Get the Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper from the market (too new to post links, but not a noob). You can temp unroot to use the Amazon services and reroot. If an OTA update gets pushed and installed, you can still reroot.
rooting/unrooting has nothing to do with registering/unregistering the device at amazon and the root status will not have any impact on ota updates.
unregistering will prevent the update allthrough i used an other solution (worked for me):
i deleted /system/etc/security/cacerts.zip - watched the update downloading to the cache folder but did not install - after a reboot the update file was disappeared from the cache folder
was registered all the time
Which file to delete?
Question. My system folder/etc/security has two files and the cacerts file is a .bks file not.zip. The other file is otacerts.zip. Which one should I delete to prevent the update?

How to avoid ICS Install

Hi,
today my Tf101 (still HC 3.2) prompted me to install firmware update (I guess ICS).
I pressed Postpone(3) to 1 day and after 5 minute he re-prompt me; I (stupid like hom) re-pressed Postpone(2) and now I see Postpone(1)
I DON'T WANT to install ICS because I'm starting to a trip and I need the tablet is perfectly working like it is now !!
How can avoid and be sure that he auto-installs the update ? (and also that he continue to prompt me...)?
Do you know where is located and what's the name of the (.bin?) file that he downloaded from FOTA and he's ready to install ?
I would like to delete them (even if he would re-download) to be sure nothing happens.
Thanks in advance
Sandro
If you do a factory reset before update to ICS, you most likely won't have problems.
ICS is great, and did you only JUST get the update? It's been here for a couple of weeks now.
Being rooted may be the only way to stop it...(to change or delete files in system).

You do not want to restore hc Apps to ics. Just reinstall them..
It takes minutes to let google reinstall apps.....
In order to do it, you have to be rooted. Then install the Droidwall app, which enables Android's built-in firewall capabilities. I block everything from accessing the Internet by default unless I explicitly choose to give an app permission, which is "whitelisting." If you are fine with how your apps run pre-Droidwall, then you should do the opposite and allow Internet access by default unless you choose not to, which is "blacklisting." On some other Android tablets, the firmware updater is an entry by itself on Droidwall, which makes it easy to block. On the Transformer though, it is lumped with a bunch of other stuff in the entry labeled "Android System, Key Chain, Settings Storage, Settings, System UI, VPN Dialogs, App Backup, CMClient, DMClient, com.asus.keyboard, App Locker, ASUS Task Manager, Google Backup Transport," which means, in order to block the updater from checking for firmware updates, you have to block Internet access for all those other items as well. That happens to be okay with me. If it's okay with you, then go ahead and restrict that entry from accessing the Internet. The updater will then no longer be able to phone home and check if an update is available, and therefore it will always tell you that there are no updates available. If you want to reverse this, simply allow Internet access again for that Droidwall entry.
I think the main problem is : "out of Rooting your TF, there's no way not to update".
It is rather idiot as it's been quite clear the ICS updates are not as stable as one would want them to.
So why force every customers having a product that has been rendered unstable, when it worked smoothly before.
I do consider my TF far more stable under HC than ICS.
Freeze dmclient.apk if your rooted
Should work
kool
If you really don't want to root you can go to Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>All>DMClient>Clear Data and it will go away BUT it will come back once the app restarts and the TF checks for updates again & you'll have to repeat the process.
You could-

Freezing dmclient in Titanium Backup Pro or a similar app will keep updates from coming back. But you do have to root for it to work...
why can't you guys just press the back button to avoid the update?
Now, the question is, how to block the update prompt entirely?

[Q] How do I prevent 4.3 OTA Update

I have searched and searched and not even google gets me to the information that I need. I apologize if this is somewhere obvious but I cannot find it.
I have the message asking me to install it but I do not want to. I am waiting for the Cyanogenmod 10.2.3 final and I just need this thing to last until that time. I am constantly worried I will accidentally update my phone.
How do I prevent the 4.3 OTA update from ever occurring?
Thank You
? Why not updating your phone to 4.3 while waiting for CM?!?!

You could just not install the update or go back to CM 10.1 while you wait.

It works fine. Google tests it pretty extensively and it's good deal better than 4.2.2.
If you're rooted, you open up build.prop and change
Code:
ro.build.date.utc=
to something else.
Keep in mind that if you wish to update in the future, you must have an unmodified build.prop to update in the future.
This either means having a backup copy or manually using a factory image.
If you manually reset the value, keep in mind that even whitespace counts as changes and will prevent an update if it's changed.

Thanks for the tip. Except now I ran into a very interesting issue. I cannot save my build.prop. I have root. ES File explorer has root permissions granted. I have mounted the partitions as R/W. Yet it does not allow me to save the edited file.
I have edited build.prop files on previous android phones but this is the first time that I am stumped.
since u have root, u may try this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1998378
no modification of system file needed.. just insert an apk into /system/app/..
Theres a much easier way.
Download Autorun Manager, run it and choose advanced mode.
In the settings enable show system entries.
choose to show only system and find google service framework.
find com.google.android.gsf.update.systemupdateservice$receiver and uncheck it(its the last on my list) and just incase also uncheck com.google.android.gsf.update.systemupdateservice$secretreceiver
I won't look for any new updates afterwards.

Hi!
you can try this: settings -> apps -> all -> google services framework (uncheck "show notifications").
This is how to prevent the update

How to delete system update files?

Okay so here is the deal. I connected my phone to my home wifi to adjust some settings to shut off my internet at night so the kids will go to bed... well be more likely to go to bed when they can't just sit and watch youtube/netflix all night. Personally I don't think they need tablets or entertainment to fall asleep, but they are my fiance's kids, and it is what it is because they have used this method for so long.
Anyway enough personal stuff, when I connected my phone, it downloaded a system update. I could not stop it, and now it is bugging me to restart and update but I dont want to. I can delay it, up to 9 times, for a later time, but I want to delete the update files entirely.
I was hoping there would be a way to do it without root, but I am fairly certain that at this point, I'm going to have to bite the bullet and install the update

Best guide I've seen, including how to reinstall apps disabled though adb, which most people seem to think is impossible.
EDIT: the shorted link on my end says "...root access" at the end. Just to be clear, the not shortened end of that link actually says "uninstall-carrier-oem-bloatware-without-root-access/", so yes, it works without root.

When I disabled this the entire settings option for system update disappears, and back in early March when I was still holding out for a Snapdragon root my phone auto downloaded an update and gave me a persistent notification about installing update. Disabling this made it go away and it couldn't auto-install it.
You can install App Inspector to see a searchable list of every app on your phone, including the package name you need for adb.
BTW, there's an option in developer options that will let you disable auto-installing updates on restart.
