8gb micro sdhc in a xda trion? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hello,
I am an owner of a xda Trion (hermes) with WM5 and have bought for Christmas a micro-SDHC memory card, it has a capacity of 8GB. Well yes, you read in various forums about SDHC drivers, which would support the type of memory card. Now, I have loaded many of such drivers and tried ... The card will be detected but unfortunately only 4GB of it. Now my question (s):
Is it possible to use 8GB in a xda trion, if so, how and with which drivers?
Are there any xda trion owners, who successfully use a 8GB SDHC card in there device?
I've also read, that wm6 has integrated the sdhc function and would be work with it. Maybe someone has experience with that?
sry for my bad english.
I am grateful for each responding, and maybe my problem can be solved!

I use 8 gig no issues, but i use wm6, as far as i knew you will need wm6 or above to use more than 4 gig.

do you know where i can get the update for wm6?

Well there are loads in this forum....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=355
Most are custom roms for our phones, so have a look though, and read the readme that are stuck to the top of the forum, they will explain how to upgrade.
There are also some offical roms depending on who your service provider is.....
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes will help you get these,
Hope this helps

thanks man, it works with wm6... full 8gb were detected. You really helped me out!

Anytime, have fun now

Hi, does anyone know what the maximum capacity for a memory card is on the xda trion running either windows mobile 5 or 6, I dont mean maximum size of the cards available on the market at this time but the rom or hardware limits, as i am thinking of upgrading from the mini s to a trion since they are now closer to my price range. thanks in advance of any responces recieved

disappointed with my new xda2 mini

just bought a new xda2 mini and i have many questions about its functionality. Is there any remedy with its low built-in memory. I use to have the xda2 & i traded it to the new mini but i realize that its even slower than the xda2. Can you please help me. the camera seems to have a lower res quality thatn the xda2 but it says that it has 1.3MegaPxls... and also it cant read my 512MB mmc. my gosh i think im short-changed with this gadget(nalugi yata ako). please help
Its not slower at all. Perhaps you have a broke XDAII mini.
Also 512 MMC should work fine, try formating it in another device first.
If that fails to work, and it works in the XDA II still, I'd reccomend sending it back :?
The cam is not the best at the moment, I think a new software version will help improve it.
Well I had the XDA 2 and then the XDA IIs as well as quite a few Ipaqs including th hx 3715 and a fujitsu looks and I think that this is the best hand held device by far. I also use a 1gb SD card without any problems as well as an SD wi-fi card, although I do agree with you on one point and that is the camera sucks big time................
fella's,
where did you get your xda 2 minis from as i to live in the Uk and would like to purchase one.
I'am just about to sell my xda2, so please let me know
Thanks alot

The O2 XDA Mini, T-Mobile MDA Compact, i-Mate JAM and Qtek 100S are completely identical, except for their respective painted logo's (and extended roms). I had a MDA Compact 64Mb and changed to a 128Mb i-mate JAM (PPCTECHS upgrade), I removed logo's on both of them with the sugarcube trick, and can now only distinguish the one from the other by their memory sizes. Hence, waiting for O2 to come out with the Mini will only be worthwhile if you do not mind to having it locked to the O2 network. Otherwise, go with the i-Mate JAM or Qtek as they come unlocked.
I purchased my upgraded i-Mate JAM from Mad Monkey Boys Gadgets at http://www.dweiniger.com/. Perfect, reliable and swift. Also accepts Paypal
i got mine from expansys but amazon.co.uk is cheaper now youll pick one up for around £380 sim free

Gaz,
Thanks for the info m8, I have ordered one from expansys, did'nt realise Amazon were selling them never mind...
Thanks alot

I think it be best to return it. Where'd you get anyway?
Is your MMC the same card you used before or is it a brand new one? I use an SD card and got it off for an awfully cheap price. around 2900PhP. Just PM if you want to know where to buy another.
As for the camera, I really can't tell unless it's taking a shot at night but the ROM update should do the trick.
If you want it to be 128MB it has to be modded and that will immediately void your warranty.
Here in Dubai, I am waiting for someone to come over and do the 128MB modding.
@Wiz, can anyone do the 128MB modding? Can I buy it from I-Mate since they do have an office here?

The mini has half the RAM of the XDA II so it takes longer to respond.
The memory can be upgraded but it may invalidate your warranty.
Bought mine from Modaco
Wiz, what is the sugarcube trick? I also want to remove the iMate logo from my iJam. Thanks!
thanks for the reply. but can you teach me how to upgrade the rom into 128mb? where can i get the program to do it. Godbless u all.
The Sugarcube trick basically is about taking a sugarcube and start rubbing the logo until it's gone ... sugar apparently is hard enough to get rid of the paint but soft enough not to damage the casing.
The 128MB Mod is exclusively done by www.ppctechs.com, although Dave Weiniger at http://www.dweiniger.com/ (MadMonkeyBoy's Gadgets) sells i-Mate Jams pre-rigged with 128MB RAM by PPCTECHS. It's from Dave Weiner that I got mine, excellent service.

Not true. Programs run just as fast in 64MB as they do in 128MB. Decreasing the amount of RAM on it's own does not degrade processing speed. The only thing it does is limit the number of applications you can have running at the same time. Use a small task switcher such as Vbar to close the apps you're not using and a 64MB Jam will be just as responsive as one with 128MB. In fact, it may even run slightly quicker, as an expanded version will have more overhead (and battery drain) from dynamically refreshing double the RAM.

i-mate SuperJAM 128MB is available now

This version does not have build in wifi. Read more here
Pfff .. mis-information ... It's only a JAM upgraded by PocketPcTechs...
Haha, do not call it "only" a JAM, it is indeed a SuperJAM. I was a bit frustrated with my 64Mb JAM prior to the upgrade, due to the fact that I do need quite a few programs on there, but ever since I had it upgraded (approx 3 weeks ago), it has been a genuine thrill to use!!!!
This has already been out for a while. You an actually get it upgraded as long as you are going to the "right" places. It will cost you. But after doing a hrad reset and following the thread on how to save more memory thread, I am thinking twice.
Unless you have lots of apps that must be put in main memory, then what's the point? I've got huge amounts of stuff on mine, yet not one needs to be installed in main memory. Of the 57mb memory, 47 is free - adding another 64 to that wouldn't make any difference to its capabilities
i'm with mvmajorem on this one... 128mb ram sounds very nice indeed but I'm happy with my 39mb free after installing all the apps I frequently use and following some of the tips on the said memory thread

I also have a JAM upgraded with 128 Mb. I just totally disagree that Expansys makes some money on selling this as a "NEW" product ... That's why I say it's a classic JAM with a PocketPCTechs upgrade and not a new HTC phone.
I have a Qtek S100 with 64Mb already. Can I upgrade this one or do I have to buy a new one ?

Card Reader Bandwidth

HEllo there,
I need to buy a new miniSD card for my P3600.
Therefore, I would like to know the bandwidth of the card reader of P3600, in order to choose wisely the best card for it.
If the badwidth is only 5MB/s, then it's not worthy to buy a card which is 80x...
Another question is: will I loose performance if I decide to go for a 4GB card?...I have this doubt because the bigger the card, bigger the mapping of it ...Therefore, more processing power is necessary...
I think is very usefull information for anybody that needs to buy a card for this device...and for that, all help would be much appreciated
Thank you
Probably you have heard all those SD file corruption stories, haven't you?
Nowadays memory cards are real damn cheap - even if it's 80x. But I guess you would want to find the most "compatible" card instead of finding the card with "just right speed".
It's almost for sure that the life span of your card will far exceed your device. The card can be reused - why not buy a better one, stability issues aside.
4GB cards usually come in the SDHC flavors - which doesn't always work as expected since Trinity only comes with partial SDHC support at best, not to mention the corruption bug.... Again you should worry more about compatibility than it's speed...
the program pocket mechanics let you benchmark and compare with other brands in other phones
with normal sd the pda is the bottleneck suspect the same goes for microSD
but read and write is never at the same speed for flash
and suspect the interface in the pda is able to write as fast as it can read of the card can keep up

I don't remember of asking anything regarding compatibility...
My question was regarding the speed...and it still remains:
-Whats the speed of Trinity card reader bus?
-Will I loose performance with a 4GB card?
I already know about the compatibility issues...but if there's no performance issues with a 4GB card, I can buy one of each brand, and see which one is compatible...if any...
I don't think that my questions are stupid, but if you think so, then keeps the thoughts for yourself please.

I don't remember anyone ever said your questions are stupid, but if you think so, then read the whole thread again. Really, that would a disaster if we all follow your logic - anyone who did not reply or did not exactly reply what you ask for would think that your questions are stupid, then basically everyone in this forum would fall into this category.
We are trying to be nice in replying your question, knowing that you are relatively new to the forum, and pointing to you there might be potential problems that you want to avoid when making a purchase decision. At least, I think this is even a more valuable advice for those who want to buy new cards especially for beginners, than just considering alone the speed.

So now, we all know that you are not stupid nor asking stupid questions, then how about if you buy one of each speed, and do a benchmark yourself and then post the results back and share your precious experience with all others? It would be invaluable to your fellow readers especially for those who want to buy a new card.

Answer my question, and who knows, I'll do it
Sorry about my rude answer...but it pisses me off, when a threads starts talking about oranges and finishes up talking about apples....
Any way...it seems like we are always changing roms, searching for the best performance, but at the end, we don't know the speed of the biggest bottleneck in the pda...
It's August...seems like all experts are in holidays
Anyone here that could give additional info?

Just bought a MDA Vario 2 off ebay :D

I had the first one a few years back and every since then I have been unhappy with the nokia and samsung I had so Im finally back with what I loved
Havent really checked the board yet, will do some proper searches later - Just wondering if their is a best version of windows mobile to flash too...
Also does TomTom work properly on this phone as on the first one you needed something else to add on I think? I could never get it to work anyway! Ha
Is their a definitive list of games too? Free or to buy? Used to love the emulators for the MDA 1 even though they struggled with sound, also Scummvm and games like Virtual Pool and Tomb Raider were amazing so Im excited to see what else has came out!
Oh, and does it just support a 2gig SD card? Before I make a purchase?
Anyway, any help would be appreciated! Thanks
Hey Chris!
The latest official roms for the Hermes are based on WM6. But also 6.1 and 6.5 are running smooth - it depends on you which rom is the best for you; you'll have to try out.
Tomtom is running well, i use TomTom 7 with a bluetooth GPS (Motorola, about 20$ at amazon).
I don't know anout a special game list - so you have to look around the internet (google will help you ;-)).
The size of the memory card depends on the OS: every non-HC memory card will work, since wm6 (afaik) memory cards until 16GB are supported.

sd card for w7

hey guys, getting some errors on my first rom install i did last night so gonna replace my 2gig micro sd card, the one that came free with the phone.
seen this on ebay, any advice recommendations would be very much appreciated
Joyflash 16GB Micro SD HC Card Class 10
£16.99
i would recommend searching as there is litterally hundreds of posts on this
but whilst im here, i wouldnt bother with that
Here is the truth of the matter,
There is no confirmed cards available on the market (potentially AT&T are selling one branded for it but it costs quite a bit and i dont know anyone thats had one)
Second thing, there is no confirmed working cards on the market ( yes repeating was intentional)
The only confirmed card is one that has been tried in a Device and has been proven to work
You have just as much luck getting a card working than one that doesnt however you can increase your chances of getting one that works by sticking to class 2 or 4
im not going in to the details of why... but that is not to say a class 10 wont work, many people have had them working, but it appears that class 2 and 4 have a higher chance of working.
Brand doesnt mean anything, some folk are saying sandisk are the best, however from my point of view this isnt the case as 2 of my cards that dont work are sandisk, inshort it depends on many things which ultimately brings teh whole thing down to luck!
My 16gig Class 2 Sandisk works fine... OS didn't reject it, I get no errors and I get no chugging when viewing sizable video files off the card (1.8gig rip of avatar for instance)...
This is strange as in the same HD2 with the stock WM 6.5 ROM, the card was slow as hell and even populating views for pictures and videos was hell slow...
I ordered a class 6 via eBay so I can diskcopy to the faster card but I'm know its only for my peace of mind...
A class 4 or 6 should do the job but stick to better brands such as Sandisk or Kingston...
WM was crippled by poor driver support, the HD2 at the time of its launch had an amazing graphics potential but we never had drivers, even the XDA ones were only touching the surface of its potential, WP7 uses that potential hence when graphics and video seem more fluid, its a shame, WM is an amazing OS if it only had some TLC, i believe thats why MS has had to lock down the WP7 OS because carriers / HTC / QC screwed WM and the irony was that MS got the blame for it all
whoops sorry posted in wrong thread, your right back on topic!

Not wanting to go too far off topic, I'll say this...
When using an 8gig no-name card I had no troubles with old WM... It only slowed when using the 16gig Class 2 Sandisk...

its luck, i dont think people understand that, perhaps because we all operate on here in a world full of 1's and 0's.
personally i think it just highlights that companys will put on a shelf anything they like of minor but questionable levels of quality
