02 XDA mini s Screen Protection

Hi,
I've been using my xda for about a month now and have noticed it hard to keep the screen clean, it seems to be very greasy etc... Has anyone invested in a screen protector for this problem or is it not really worth it?
Also cause i have only had mine a month with limited use, has anyone who has owed this phone longer noticed it gets scratched from the pen etc after longer periods of time...?
I know not important questions but just something i've been wondering none the less. Thanks

Got a brando one
I wanted to ditch the case (as it's pants) so I got a brando screen protector. It was a real faff to fit and I still haven't got it a) square or b) without loads of [email protected] under it, but it does its job, it seems to be sensitive enough and I (probably) am too ham-fisted to judge how difficult it is to fit the thing.

Do they leave any marks when you peel them off afterwards? From the glue and stuff?

They don't use any glue, so you can just peel them off with no problem.
They cling to the screen like clingfilm.

nothing else than brando! have used it on all of my previous devices .. just no comparison to the cheap ones on ebay ...

I would say screen protector is a must for me...I'm too lazy to pull out the stylus every time....a screen protector will allow me to tap with my fingers, nails.....or even a pen....in fact, I put a protector on almost every mobile phones, my previous PPC....

Fair enough, but at £8.50+ its a rip off!!! for a bit of plastic that cost 0.05p to make, they're laughing all the way to the bank....

Maybe but im just not convinced, how can you decribe a bit of platic as a "quality product"? I have heard they are extreemly hard to fit properly without getting finger prints on them etc and you get air bubbles and it is really annoying if you even leave a few specs of dust underneath it...?
No one round the office here seems to bother with them. I dont expect with any device for the screen to remain untouched forever, i think it just comes down to normal wear and tear, as with everything. Just my views anyway, need to hear more about these things before i had over best part of £10.
I have seen a Martin Fields one and someone on here said they were good. Is it easy to notice its there if you have one installed?

I have bought some via ebay from screenprotector24 at £1.99 for 6 plus P&P. There was also a buy 2 get 1 free offer on too. I have never been a fan of screen protectors but I agree that with the Mini-S it is verging on essential.
I am more than happy with the quality of the ones I received.

Brando screen protectors
Just because something's made of plastic doesn't mean it isn't quality. After all look at Pamela Anderson! (Sorry).
The Brando one I got is doing its job. Before I had the screen protector dirt would pile up and I'd be cleaning it 3 or 4 times a day. Now I don't have to. I was worried the screen would get damaged. I don't have to worry what I use on the screen or shoving it in my pocket.
Yes, you can tell it's on if you look. It looks like you've left the manufacturers sheet on but without a tab to remove it if it catches the light. Straight on, you'd be hard pressed to know it's there - honest.
I haven't seen the cheapo ones myself, I went on recomendations on forums from people who had more experience.
Also, Brando service is outstanding in my experience.

Right ok, i am thinking of getting one just for peace of mind. All i can find is Martin Philips ones on UK sites... Where can i find a decent priced Brando one on a UK site for a 02 xdx mini s? Can someone name a shop or link me etc?

I had the antireflective one on my old XDA2, but these ultra glossy ones are MUCH better. It was a fiddle to fit, but I honestly can't that it's there other than by looking for the edge. I've tried this a few times and I find the following procedure works well.
First off, you need to find as dust free an environment as possible. Choose a room that doesn't have any carpet, or fabric in it if you can(cushions curtains etc). Boil a kettle, and make the room a bit steamy. When the steam clears, it should take some of the dust with it.
The trick to avoiding dust is to be prepared. Get a good lint free cloth (lens microfibre cloth worked well for me) and a blower brush - small rubber bulb with a nozzle. Also keep some masking tape ready. Finally you will need a bright light - ideally a spot light, or if you've got low fluorescent lights under over your kitchen work tops, they are ideal. Wear latex gloves if you have any (you can usually get packs of 20 from poundland)
Stick some masking tape to the your worksurface, folding it back on itself, so that the sticky side is facing up. Use several strips so that you have an area two or three times the size of your screen.
Spend a few minutes polishing with the lint free cloth, and then set the phone down, face up, well illuminated (from above) and switched off!. Blow off all the remaining dust with the blower - make sure that no dust is stuck (might require more polishing) at this stage you have two hands free - in a minute you won't! Dont worry if some dust starts to settle back on the screen at this stage - it will be loose, and you can blow it off in a minute.
Next step - take the screen protector, and peel off the backing two thirds of the way. Keep the 'sticky' side face down so dust doesn't settle on it. It's helpful if you can crease the backing slightly as it's quite springy and tends to get in the way a bit. Be careful not to touch the exposed side though. If you're right handed you'll want the screen protector in your right hand at this moment.
The next bit, you might need to repeat a few times until you get it right...
Blow the last bits of dust off the screen (do NOT use your mouth - you will spit all over the screen). Line up the most exposed end of the protector - its a very precise fit, the edges will touch both sides, and the end should be lined up exactly with the end of the screen. If you push the protector under the plastic above the screen it will be short at the other end. You might need to lift and reposition a few times to get this right. Once you have placed the exposed end, put a finger on top and check the alignment. Now check for any dust. You might be able to blow one or two bits off, but if there is more than that, you need to lift off the protector, press it down onto the upturned tape to get rid of any dust, blow the dust of the screen and try again. The dust sticks to the tape MUCH better than the screen, and will not leave any residue on the Brando protector, so you can do this quite a few times if necessary.
The important thing here is not to panic. You will get dust, and will need to go round the loop a few times, but as you'll be prepared, there will be no problem. Once the protector is lined up, the screen is (temporarily) dust free and there are no bubbles (phew!) carefully remove the last of the backing film and holding the edges very lightly between your fingers (gloves help here) lay the last bit removing any bubbles. Once down, it is hard to get the protector off without damaging the edge so only do the last bit once you're sure there is no dust/bubbles.
Remove the front sheet and polish. With any luck, you should hardly be able to tell that the screen protector is there!

Martin Fields overlay plus Question
Nice one on such detailed instructions!
I order a Martin Fields over lay plus today, they seem to have good reviews everywhere i have looked. They are slightly adhesive though, but as this is a "gentle silicon based glue" (so i hear) i think that means it will be fine on the screen.
Has anyone had experience on using these and what the screen is like after you remove them, any residue etc left afterwards? How long will it last roughly?

I haven't tried this, but you could probably save yourself the cost of a blower brush by using a bike pump or better still an airbed footpump (you can use that one handed).

tom99, if you get a Martin Fields protector (or any other sort that uses adhesive) I'm not sure that its safe to use masking tape to clean it. The Brando ones stick to the screen electostatically, so its safe to clean them with tape (the instructions that come with it recommend scotch tape). If the instructions you get with your Martin Fields protector don't mention cleaning with tape, then I would miss out that step. Can you add a comment to this thread when you get it (or anyone else that has used a MF protector)? It might help others decide which protector to go for.

Case for fuze/touch pro for protection

I wanted to know if anyone had any good or bad experiences with clear cases like this one

I want to get a case that will protect the fuze from drops. I drop my previous phone the 8525 twice and because I'm in a city the first drop was on one of those metal grates and the phones edges got scratched up more than I would have liked and the second time was on a concrete side walk. Both times I was pulling out my phone from my case on my hip and lost grip. I was interested in getting a case that I can pull my phone from the top. That may help prevent me losing grip. But I still want to put something on the phone incase I loss grip again and drop the phone. And I was looking for something that will not put that much bulk or take away from the looks of the phone. If anyone has any suggestions or experence with cases or skins that I can put on the phone to try and protect it from a drop I would like to read about it

I had the boxwave clear case for my 8525, and it saved my phone several times. There were a couple problems though. For starters, the gaps between the plastic and the phone get covered in dirt, and you have to remove the case to clean it out. The case snaps on to your phone will little plastic tabs. If one of those breaks, part of your case will be loose.
However, I will certainly give the case full marks for protecting my phone. It survived drops, throws, smashes, and just about everything else you can imagine would happen if a 1 year old got a hold of your phone. So, if you don't really care about the phone getting dirty and whatnot, the boxwave case provides some good protection while adding a minimal amount of bulk to the phone.

I had a case similar for my HTC Tilt and I loved it, it saved my phone several times too and it has a belt clip which I loved! Also if you get that case they have it on eBay for cheaper... I believe it was $9.99 or something like that, I was looking earlier today and saw it on there but I bought a Hot Pink Rubberized one instead. But I like the cases, of course it's your own personal preference though. Hope I'm not too late with the eBay info though lol. Here's my search link, there are a couple cases for it.

Search for the body glove case. It is rubberized, not the best looking of cases, but might protect it the best. I bought mine on ebay.

I bought the official AT&T 2-piece case for $29.99 (-30% FAN discount).
It fits, but tabs that hold it on make the phone seem like it's going to get stuck in a half open position.

HTC Touch Pro Case Protection
For those of you who have a Touch Pro and have the Sprint included HTC brand case, you probably have the same gripe about it as I do. There is very little protection to the side of the phone as the OEM case has several gaps in it. Also using the case for a few weeks, the velcro begins to lose its hold and the case may not shut properly. I have customized my case to fix these problems and would encourage others to do the same. Here is what you will need:
-Small elastic material (available at any craft store or Wal-Mart!)
-3M double sided tape
-Velcro strips
-5 minute epoxy (Wal-Mart)
Directions: Cut a piece of elastic the same length as the open portion of the side of the case. Cut out small pieces of double sided tape and apply to the black cross sections of the case. Apply the elastic and cut to size. For the the velcro fix on the front of the phone, cut a strip of the velcro and fit to size on the front of the case. Mix the 5 minute epoxy and apply to the back of the velcro strip you just cut. Apply the velcro to the case and allow to dry (apply pressure to ensure a tight fit). Enjoy your case!

Body Glove Case Issues

Anyone else buy and have problems with it? I searched around after thinking I saw a complaint on it like I've got but couldn't find.
Basicly, I put it on started noticing the top was putting pressure onto the screen I think. THe touch screen got extremely laggy, unresponsivess, and just seemed to go crazy. I'm going to try sanding it down on the inside but I think that just sucks.
On top of that the phone fell out of the back/belt clip half one night and caused a nice freakin dent in my phone and allowed the battery to flip out almost down a sewer.
Anyone care to give me a positive review so I don't just throw this thing out?
Also - is it possible to buy a new physical case to replace a scratched/dented case? Not the body glove I mean the actual phone casing.

I have this case and had the same problem. I have read that many others have had it too. Honestly I dont know why a company would put out a product like this. They all should be recalled, however me being me decided to just fix it by Taking a dremel tool and shaving some of the inside part of the screen protector off, making it put less pressure on the screen. It fixed it immediately. The case does a great job in protecting the phone, just a major flaw that can be fixed if you have the time and tools. If you dont, ***** to the company and get your money back and try something else.

Yes I could see that the inside casing was a bit rough so sanding should stop the problem - but seriously that's a major issue.
Have you found that it holds the phone well though? Because I'm very upset that my phone fell out of it once already but maybe it was an error on my part and it wasn't secure enough...

I've never had the phone fall out of the body glove case.

i mangled my body glove case.
someone bumped into me and the phone fell out of the case AGAIN.
i ripped it to shreds and left it on the side of the road to rot into plastic hell.
i dont recommend this product.

I returned mine. I had the exact same issues (screen and phone falling out). It also didn't attach properly on the top left corner, it was always bowed out. I don't recommend it either.

Anyone got any else to share?

When all the way snapped on, mine pushed the top left corner so hard the entire screen would not respond to touch. Returned it.

My friend and i had the same issue. We just took it off messed around with it and put it back and it works fine, SOMETIMES it happens again but we just take it off and put it on.
Since there is not any other case that provides this type of protection we are keeping it. I rather my phone be safe than anything else.

I just ordered mine yesterday so I'm anxiously awaiting its arrival.
What exactly did you have to mod to get it to work? According to my readings, you just need to sand down the edges that connect with the screen right?

I may just buy the case and sand down what was mentioned. I like the design of the case..only one so far I really like.

I've been using one for about two weeks and am very happy with it. Had read about the screen pressure issue on other posts (searching helps folks), and scraped down the top corners before I put it on. Don't need a dremel tool or sandpaper. No problems, fits perfectly. The only warning is that it's a little dicey to take off once it's on -- it really fits snugly.

Yout're talking about the "sand texture" clip-on case, right? If so, yes, I bought the case too. The top cover was too tight and caused the screen issue people are mentioning. That was an easy fix by shaving down the edges that were pressing too hard (actually, I just cleaned off the coating from the plastic that was causing it... The bottom of the case however wouldn't fit at all. no matter what I tried, I couldn't get all of the clips to lock over the edges of the phone. I removed the felt lining and still had issues. I got around it by using thin double sided tape (for a temporary fix until I got a new case). I wouldn't trust the belt clip with the double stick tape though. I ordered the rubberized case on ebay and the fit is perfect. Just get that one. I sent an e-mail in to Body Glove and have had no response yet. We should all get our money back on these cases, or at least a redesigned bottom case that fits correctly. Right now it was just a complete waste of money. It's a shame, because I really liked the feel of the case.

That is the one I ordered, and the fit is perfect. The only thing I wish it had was the belt clip insert for the case included. I don't know where to find one, but I mostly keep it in my pocket anyway.

you guys want a good case that protects? check out the monaco aluminum case, it comes with a clear lens on it which I haven't removed but you could if you wanted quick access to the touchscreen. I work in the construction field and have yet to have it fall off my clip. I also dropped my tilt (when I used it) from about 8" off a ladder and it was perfectly fine. The aluminum case for the fuze isn't any more bulky than the body glove case either.

I've got one of these as well...and while it does protect the phone very well it will also lower your signal strength. I've had these type cases for the Wizard and Tilt and now the Fuze...whenever I'm in an area where the signal was a little iffy to begin with I WILL either drop the call or be unable to answer with the metal case. So, stay away from the aluminum ones if you go into lower coverage areas (and no...the slots they cut in the back to help improve the signal don't actually help.)

Screen Protector

Can someone please tell me how to apply the screen protector that comes with the phone as it's just a large piece of clear plastic with no instructions how to physically attach it to the display!

It has a peel away backing which is much thinner than the protector.
I struggled to find how this attached when I got mine and have since put hair and smudges on the sticky backing. Can't wait for the new ones to come online mid May.

Just put it on. Work cleanly though, be prepared and do it right the first time.

Bend the corner of the big part slightly and the two parts seperate
The part that goes onto the backing bit is what goes on screen
start from the top and smooth it down
As mentioned, work in a clean/dust free environment!
I've done it many times but even this time round, I got fluff inside - just one spec thinking as it was brand new out of the box, it wouldnt have anything on the screen and so I wouldnt need to clean it !
In removing the protector to clean it out... I ruined it
Got my new Brando one the other day which feels a bit more stronger and durable but still clear so I'll be putting that on later tonight
And now I have a air can with me too so if I get anything in the way, I can blow it out rather than trying to scrape it out

I've now put on the screen protector that came with the phone, but it feels a little thin and flimsy.
I'd like to know people's opinion of other aftermarket brands of protector for this phone as I'd like to get something a bit better quality.

Did you try this new Brando screen protector, and if so, is it any good?

OK I applied mine today - sorry for the delay but I was just waiting for a time I could be patient !
I ordered it from HTCDirect as they are the only ones that had in stock
Recieved it promptly the next day so Kudos to them on that...also the guy I kept in touch with over email (Carlos if I remember correctly) was great and prompt in my queries.
My main query was - does it have the SAME fitment as the original bundled one.
As you know, the bundled one covers the entire screen including the slider for zoom and camera
The answer was Yes, it was exactly the same fitment.
So when I opened the pack, I was a bit annoyed as it was clearly NOT the same fitment! It's close however, but the top of the camera where on the HTC is all the way round with a small hole for the camera, the Brando one is in a U shape leaving the top bit of the camera open.
OK onto application
Just like all Brando protectors, it is protected by two covers on either end with clear instructions - pull one side BEFORE application and the other AFTER application
Once the dust was off the screen and the original protector...
I did just this - and after several attempts of lining it up - and I note, it is very EXACT in lining up. Slightly out and you will have more black on one side from the screen than the other.
Peeled it off, applied it and smoothed it out - the latter bit was hardly needed as the bubbles just vanished which was great.
At this state, the protector looked smoked a little and not as clear as the original one.
Once I was happy, I peeled the top part - noticed one bubble near the end where the label to peel was, smoothed it out and the protector was as clear as the original one.
First impressions:
It does feel MUCH more durable
It has a very slight and I mean SLIGHT smoked affect in that it is not 100% transparent as the original one but this shows how good it is potentially in strength.
Usage is fine, I can glide over it with my finger and stylus without any issues. The original was a finger print magnet but this seems to not stain with it which is great.
Now the downside....
I think HTCDirect sent me a slightly duff one. It has clearly got markings on the top (once the top layer was off) which look like impact marks.
It is very tiny - almost like what happens to a screen without a protector after 12months
I'm not too fussed but feel a bit cheated. Its no use removing it now as I would have no protector on it during the replacement stages - not to metion I would have to pay to ship back etc.
For now, I am ok with it but if it bugs me, I will throw it away and put the original one on (I ordered 2 extras from Clove who as usual, got it to me instantly, good communications and speed in delivery).
The clove one has no marks at all so thats an option.
Hope this answers some of your questions but to summarise your question
Is it stronger?
Yes it is
Is it worth it?
If you can get one mark free - yes it is
Benefits?
It's re-usable, stronger, washable, and I notice it does not let as much light reflect of it - something I had huge problems with in the sunlight with the original one where I could not see the screen - I am not exaggerating!
Downsides?
Where I got mine from, it has marks on it - something that might just force me to remove it and go back to the original one
Also the camera does not go in a O shape but rather a U shape

OK during the submit button, I realsed the marks and the U shape was bugging me too much
I knew it was a matter of time that gap in the U would get clogged up with dust that would eventually get stuck around the U bit
Removed it and applied the original one I bought from Clove... I have two so if it does wear down, I can replace it
I know from experiance that the original one in the box that I applied lasted fine up till now (a month now since I've had my TD2) so I dont doubt that it will be worn out - May not last as long as Brando's guarantee of it outlasting te device but that's fine given the price of the HTC ones.
Applied it without any dust getting trapped (the main reason I had to buy these and the brando one)
I found those marks were actually dust that was already stuck under the protective layer - whether this is HTCDirects fault or Brando during factory release - who knows but I think as a lesson, I'm staying away from both and sticking to the original stuff.
Hope you make the right decision either way - for now, a brando goes into the bin

damnit, didn't pay enough attention to dust & co...so after i saw that i catched a few dust pieces under it, i've tried to get them out manually - big mistake.
so trashed the original one and waiting for the new brando to put it on. being a former iphone-user, i must admit that the diamond2 screen is pretty sensible to scratches. i thought that i won't be needing any protection, but i already have a few small ones...so a screen protection is a must-have now.

I should have read this thread before I tried to apply my screen protector. Straight away I had dust underneath the screen protector. Obviously I will now have to order some more protectors but will I be alright using my phone until they arrive? How delicate is the td2 screen?

You'll be fine using it while its there - just be annoying to see the dust specs!
I ordered a pair of the original ones in the end as I was not happy at all with the premium Brando one - the look, feel and visibility was terrible
Reason I ordered 2 of the original ones is I was hearing rumours before the unit was even released that the original HTC one was not durable and would need to be replaced after x amount of months - having had mine for 4-5 months now and with heavy usage, I can report back to say the first protector of the two is still on there - still very clean with no stylus/finger/nail marks and still as durable as it was when I put it first on.

From what other threads are saying the screen should be treated with care. Don't push it hard and avoid impacts. Don't stick the phone in your back pocket! Some people have experienced damaged screens even after a short time.

Shouldnt put any phone in your back pocket!
The number of phones I have to fix or write off because they have had severe pressure on them - ie: sitting on them has increased 5 fold recently.
And lets face it...the countries population are not getting any thinner/smaller!

I know it is not recommended. but I use a small drop of water on the screen before applying the screen, wiping the water as it is squeeze out. The water takes the dust with it.

I've applied mine that came with the Diamond 2 and after a few attempts you can't see it is there. Ironically I fits so well I almost want to put another screen protector on top of it so it doesn't become damaged and need replacing.
Anyway a tip. Working in a dust free environment is the key. A bathroom is a good place. I have a hepa air filter (for hayfever) and this removes dust really well so run that for a bit which helps.
With all the care in the world dust can get underneath, I had a few specs, and they tend to cause a small bubble as the screen screen protector can't fit flush. I found it very easy to remove them. Have some sticky tape handy, this can be used to lift up the screen protector from the corner. Lift it back up enough to get to the spec of dust, and using another piece of sticky tape dab the spec of dust off the sticky side of the protector, then lay it back down.

I know what you mean I made an okay job of the one that came with it. The rubber case I bought of eBay came with one as well and made a right pigs ear of that. I think they need to be applied in a clean room
I've since bought some more off eBay so next time, I'm going to be a lot more careful!

I got 3 screen protectors with the original phone (2 of them as a gift). The first one was perfect except for a piece of fluff near the middle of the screen. I tried to remove it with a cloth(!!!) and ruined it. So I went for the second one, but at this stage the screen was not clean so I tried to use a microfibre cloth, which made it worse because it leaves even more fluff. I tried to fix it a few times and so now I have fluff inside, plus a bubble (the protector is a bit scratched) plus it doesn't stick properly on most of the sides and around the holes.
I am tempted to use the last one, but if I ruin it once more I am out of them. My biggest problem is how to clean the screen before sticking the protector. Will all the fluff come away when I remove the old protector? How can I clean the screen, knowing that the microfibre leaves fluff? Shall I blow with a can of compressed air?

I find magic tape is great for removing dust spots. Use the backing sheet to gently lift a corner then push the tape underneath to clean screen or protector as needed.
My favourite screen protectors are from Martin Fields. Really tough and easy to apply. Also, they are washable so if you do get a real dust problem you just take it off an run under the tap. Don't try that with the phone though...

Dust under the touch screen - solution!!!

Hi to all who have dust between the touch screen digitizer and LCD.
I send my device 3 times to the authorised HTC service center because of this problem, they cleaned it (not perfectly) and the dust was back again after few days of use. This was really ennoying for me...
After several disassemblies, cleaning, research where dust comes in, then assembles I found the flaw.
The dust doesn’t come in via sealing foam between the touch screen digitizer and LCD.
There is a bump defect of phone housing around the volume keys. Inside of the plastic housing is a metal frame, where the touch screen digitizer is stacked on - that frame is a little bended and the touch screen doesn’t stick properly on it (around the volume keys only). When you look close on the phone you can see also a little wider gap between the touch screen top glass and silver plastic housing edge. (See picture)

So, now, what you have to do:
For those, who have already dust in, just simply disassembly your device (if you are brave enough, have all tools and precise hands - maybe some experience ) and remove PROPERLY all dirt with brush, compressed air and antistatic cloth, then assemble it back or send the device to the service center to clean it (wont void the warranty). Before sealing your TD2 (keep it in plastic bag away from dust) prepare a sharp wooden toothpick, neutral transparent or black silicone (you can purchase it from any building material shop) and cotton cloth.
Now you have to clean the gap between whole plastic silver housing frame and touch screen top glass with soft brush. Then use sharp wooden toothpick to impress the silicone into the gap (all gaps you can see, just in case) (silicone does not damage phone housing and TSCR surface and it’s easy to clean), then just gently and properly wipe off all the rest of silicone from phone surface. (be careful not to get silicone to the keys or phone receiver slot)
Leave the phone for several hours to get silicone dry.
Then you can use your TD2 in dusty environment and your display stays absolutely clean and dusty free. (TESTED on mine, for me perfect phone now and I am very happy with it...)
For those who have a little dust in and want to stop come more in and those who are planning to buy TD2 (dont wanna play the lottery faulty or not ), do the same procedure (silicone impress only) after unwrapping your device from plastic package.

I don't know about you guys, but I'm not crazy enough to void the warranty of my phone because of a minor thing like that. When mine gets dirty, I send it back and that's it.
If it gets dirty again, I send it back again...

I sent mine back over a week ago due to this dust problem (in fact I delivered it in person to HTC repair center in Milton Keynes) hoping for a quick turnaround.
I'm still waiting for it to come back and missing it terribly. I'm back to using my old Nokia E71 which is a great phone but I like my new one and want it back so I may go down the route of the OP just so I don't have to repeat the return each time I get a dust issue.....

I just got a topaz and want to keep dust from getting in but I'm confused about the sillicon. Could you describe more clearly what it is and maybe post a picture so I have some idea what it should look like.

from the picture, for the second gap, apply the protective foil that comes with the phone. Should solve a bit the problem. Ber in mind that after apply, the touchscreen will not have the same sensitivity. You'll have to tap a little bit harder ...

I thought these dust under the screen issues had been fixed long ago, but now it seems the problem that affected my old c600 has come back to ruin my topaz after just 1 week.

I already use a screen protector. I'm more concerned about the first gap. I really don't want dust to happen since I bought my phone second hand and it doesn't have a warrenty.

you can always use a can of pressurized air to get the dust out. (same you use with PCs)

Wouldn't you need two holes that are connected if your blowing air into the device? One for the air to go in and one for the dust to go out? I don't have any dust under my screen currently and would like it to remain that way. The silicon method doesn't seem to difficult or dangerous which is why I'm interested in what silicon to use.

from what I understood (from the pictures in the 1st post), it's not actually a hole, but a free space = gap.

I opened the D2 (only the two upper screws - for lifting the inner part a bit) and did have a look for "gaps" somewhere around the volume controls - i did not really see a gap
But for getting out the dust: dont blow air into the D2 but get the air out - i actually used a vacuum-cleaner. If you remove the two screws it is possible to lift the LCD below the volume sliders *A LITTLE BIT* (=about 0,5 mm only!!!!!) with a small screw driver to create a gap. It worked quite well. (be aware of high air flow and possible static electricity)
But i really would like to know, where exactly to apply some supplementary sealing to get rid of the dust-problem. Any detailed pic would be appreciated.

Yeah Me too!

OK, people, just put some neutral silicone between (in the gap) silver plastic frame and touch screen (there is just 0,2 -0,5 mm gap, almost invisible) and you wont get any dust under the touch screen. This is the best solution, you could do it from inside, but its much more complicated...

What exactly is neutral silicone? Do you have a picture of it so I know what to buy?

I've had it for about a week and the user I bought it from had it supposedly for about 3 weeks and so far no dust. I'm still terrified its going to happen though.

Thanks for the pic, pedroo - so they simply should have glued the digitizer surface a bit more careful to the housing...
...thinking a bit about applying the radical solution - not sure yet
