It explains it all in the title really. My elf freezes up after closing most of the games on it. The two built in are fine, Solitaire and The bubbles game dont freeze at all, but with almost any other game i put on, it will freeze after closing. The Phone will keep on going, you can hear the screen presses working, but the screen will still only show the games folder.
Any ideas anyone?
If I remember correctly, you had a thread a few days earlier on the applications tab not working on HTC home right?
I think you'd be better off doing a hard reset on your device. It seems to be giving you a lotta problems. I keep doing a hard reset to my device every 4-6 months to keep it clean and unclog the memory and defrag it. It helps with performance. Maybe you'd like to do something similar.
I might just do that. I just dont want to have to re-install everything : /
well, ive just done a hard reset and its all working fine again
no freezing and it lets me add stuff to the app launcher without the use of the home screen configuration whotsit
Thanks Imyman for the advice
Since upgrading my TD2 to the official WM6.5 ROM issued by HTC I have had problems with the handset freezing; the only remedy has been to remove the battery and switch back on. At first I thought it was a hardware fault but a friend's phone has also started doing the same since he upgraded. This never happened previously and only happens every ten days or so.
Has anyone else experienced similar problems?
I'm having the same problems mate. My TD2 on 6.5 freezes spoaradically - I'd say at least twice a week, and the only solution is to remove the battery.
I've been trying to link the freeze with a particular program or app but the phone has frozen at varying times and in many cases whilst no apps are running!
I'm waiting for upgrade on my contract as I've had it with this TD2 and especially WinMo. I mean, how can WinMo store all saved words in SMS on RAM only for it to be wiped after every restart/soft reset?! Why? Argh!
I'm going for the Hero next, and see how nice Android plays!
Good luck with your query...

Does it do this without the mem card installed?
Exactly the same is happening here and the same on my friend's TD2. We have never tried WM 6.1, the first step after purchasing the phone was to upgrade to stock WM 6.5 ROM.
I tried to disable the weather animation on home screen but this doesn't help. My friend has disabled HTC sense and his phone has not frozen after one week. We will have to wait another week or two to proof that this could be the solution.
I hope that Touch Flo is not the cause of this malfunction because WM6.5 UI is very ugly.
I don’t know if the mem card could cause this issue but using the phone without mem card is simply not an option for me. The phone memory is too limited.
My friend also raises this issue on HTC support but so far HTC is ignoring the problem. The only bright word from HTC support was that they will investigate this issue (after many words on how to flash, reflash and hard reset ...).
I really hope that the solution for this very inconvenience will be find out soon.
My TD2 also freezes often compared to Win 6.1 where it almost never froze. I also hope that HTC will make some kind of service pack for Win 6.5 as it doesn't work that well at the moment.

Not tried it without the memory card, but I need the card for storage. Never froze prior to 6.5 upgrade.

I'm not suggesting that anyone uses the device without a mem card! You are missing my point.
Phones that freeze do so for a reason and it's necessary to eliminate possible causes.
Some two years ago I did extensive testing on this subject when the same issues arose around another make and model of phone.
One thing I found is that it is possible to induce instability of handsets when mem cards are used (abused?) in certain ways.
My TD2 used to freeze when I first got it and it has also done so with a number of cooked ROMs. With my current ROM it never freezes and there are no instability issues.
I strongly suspect poor coding of apps and lack of thorough beta testing. Isn't it strange how some apps have been around for years and you can rely on their worth?
Installing to mem card causes issues as well as cards that have installed apps being reused after cooked ROM flashing and previous settings and fat tables being left on the card.
Also when power is low mem cards draw large currents that the battery may not be able to give. They are very power hungry. I took this up with Sandisk Tech Dept and they politely told me that the info on current draw under stress (usage) was not for public access!
So my answer is keep your ROM light (no manila or after market 'front end'), minimise card usage by installing all you can to phone mem, reformat afresh with every ROM flash and keep your battery as highly charged as possible at all times.
Some say 'yes but I do all those things and I never get freezes'. That's fine but no help to those that do.
There really is only one way to find out and that is to take a little time and try it for yourself.
Large address book combined with bad 3rd party program
On my Tilt2 I found that applications like Fring could freeze the phone. After a few tries, I decided not intall that anymore (and Fring might have fixed it by now, but I can't afford to try, because uninstalling required a hard reset).
The phone originally came with HTC TouchFLO, but I switched that off, since it just made everything more difficult to reach. And sometimes the fhone became unresponsive, slow or totally frooze. After I disabled it by using the Windows Today (6.5 or classic) after which I only had about 2 freezes in 1.5 year.
Now I finally upgraded to the latest official ROM for the phone, which has HTC Sense on it. After everybody saying how great Sense was, I gave it a try. It worked reasonably, until I started playing with the Favorites in the Peoples tab. After each new addition (I tried 3) I had to restart the phone, and after restart it still hung up.
I happen to have a quite large address book that I synchronize with ActiveSync. I think I'm starting to see a pattern, where several applications - Fring, Sense, etc - just cannot handle large address books.
By the way, to disable Sense, first switch to the Windows Default (= WinMo 6.5) Today screen, and do a soft reset to get rid of Sense background processes. If you want to use the WinMo classic Today screen, then you can do that after the reset. Directly trying to move from Sense to WinMo classic resulted in another freeze. After disabling Sense, I haven't experienced a freeze, (yet !!!).
^^Try a custom rom,Sense works fine on those as the ROM is highly modified with few errors now.
Hi
My HD2 often fails to wake up when I press any of hard button. Before I perform a hard reset I wanted to ask you guys if there are any tweaks or apps which might be causing this. I am using the stock T-Mobile UK firmware, and besides tweaking a few settings via BsB Tweaks, the phone is pretty much in its original state.
My previous HD used to do this for a time, until I realized it started happening after setting up Windows Exchange server. After hard resetting and setting everything up again, it worked fine. I wonder if the problem I have with the HD2 is also due to the exchange server.
Sometimes the phone does wake up a couple of minutes after I pressed buttons, sometimes an incoming SMS helps it. And many times it just wakes up as it should when I press the Home or power button.
I don't have many apps installed, besides Tomtom.
Cheers !
Hi, the same was to me: sent an sms, locked the device, tried to unlock it in half an hour - screen blank, no response to buttons at all. ROM is stock. I remember, I also had TomTom installed and some other popular tweaks, not remember which exactly. After it, I did hard-reset the phone (restored original state). Didn't had the same problem after it.
But had a lot of other problems with HD2 - unsent sms even after sms fix from HTC, unlock screen of S2U2 locked completely (someone was calling me at this moment!), sporadic change of clock time zone...
It is my first smart-phone, and I'm disappointed soooo much... Used "true" mobile phones for years, but never had such problems.
I had the same problem but it's seemed to have stopped (for about 2 days now). It got to the point where the phone wouldn't get past the boot screen! I had to re-flash in the end....
I think it may be related to the applications I may have running. Although, most people are saying the ROMs so far are not 100% stable. (I'm running the Official Test version of 1.61)
The things I've done to try to get around it is :
- Ensure .NET compact frame work is installed to set up 3.5 and set up correctly in the registry
- Once in a whie I run the cleanRAM application that's been developed here on these forums
I don't think I've found the total solution yet, but I'm sure having these in check will help.
To give an update :
I did a hard reset yesterday. (it's always painful, but also exciting as you can set it up from start - sad i know)
This time I set up the windows exchange server straight from the beginning, then installed all the tweaks, tomtom, hotfixes etc. It woke up everytime since then, touch wood !
I'm not sure, but there are security policies pushed through to the device (like making screen lock compulsary etc) when I set up the exchange server, maybe this is causing some sort of conflict with the device, which is maybe somehow avoided when you set it up before anythin else... I dunno.
I'll let you know if it fails to wake up again.
By the way, so far I only installed BsB tweaks, but didnt apply any tweaks yet. I changed the battery percentage display, 16 quick links cab, and 3G switch in the Coms Manager, but that's it. No tweaking in the registry yet, just so that I can determine the root cause if it happens again. But so far it looks good ! It also seems faster (as it always does
Is it still running stable ?

It has been pretty much stable. Since the hard reset I was adding (or tweaking) tweaks and cabs in a controlled manner to see which one might be causing the freezing.
After I installed the Disable Auto Device Lock.cab (search the forum, I think it is in the sticky Tips and Tricks post), my HD2 didn't wake up a few times. I uninstalled dit and it is working fine again.
Weird, but maybe that's the registry change that conflicts with the exchange server policies that are pushed to the device, and causes the freeze.
Hi.
I have to soft reset my HD2 all the time because it often lags too much.
I will now list the things which makes me wanna reset my device:
- The HD2 lags so badly, that most actions take up to 5 seconds.
- One application can crash (mostly HTC_Messaging), and I have to soft reset.
- When I write messages, the keyboard has a input lag of 5-10 seconds.
- Screen wont turn on when I push the buttons
- The device wont unlock when I slide the slider, it just stops up.
Now this happens each time I upgrade my ROM, and I am currently using Artemis now.
The programs I've installed each time is:
- FingerKeyboard
- Touch X reset and wifi
- Touch X button icon in messaging
and now I use WMLongLife also.
My SD-card is an 8GB card.
So if someone could help me, I would be happy.
(Sorry for bad english.)

Start again. Install nothing and just configure settings.
Does it run slow and crash then?
If so you have problem that could be harware.
Try another ROM and if the same then I think you need to return the unit.
If all runs fine on a clean, vanilla phone then you are doing something in the install process that is causing the instability.
Try installs one by one to the phone mem and check operation each time.
NB. Some background info would have been helpful. ROM version, Model etc!

The problem is that I can't predict when its gonna happen. It can happen randomly, and then I have to restart the phone. After the restart, everything works normal and perfect.
This can happen upto three times a day, some days it wont happen at all.
Currently using 2.10.531.7 Artemis, but this also happens with the stock ROM. The newest one that is. My radio version is 2.06.51.07
Its kinda difficult to run things vanilla phone, cause the applications I use, I need.
for me htc messaging has never crashed...
i suggest you to flash a stock rom, 1.66 for example and try it without the sent button.
if there are still problems, u can try using mtty or send it back for repair...
edit: i had the problem where the phone was freezing while loading for a long time (over night), and the display won´t turn on. Switched back to manually update Facebook, Twitter and Weather, and had no more problems since...

Well I think its crashing.
That's what I usually use when I lock the screen. So sometimes when I try to unlock it, I just get half of the messaging program or nothing, on screen. And I cant do anything.
When I try to click the Home-button, it respons in some seconds and Home-screen is all laggy.

When you lock the phone apps still run in the back ground as if asleep and when you unlock they attempt to restore themselves as they were before the lock.
You have something clashing installed and that is calling the registry at the same time as something else. Remember when windows full size used to do it?.
I think you have a badly written piece of software installed (either preloaded or installed by yourself) and suggesting starting from vanilla is a way to issolate it!
i've also had similar problems as you. after hard reseting a couple of times, i noticed that the intermittent lag began after i started syncing my phone to my PC and myphone. it turns out that my terrible management of appointments, messages and contacts was the root of my problem (several duplicates of everything, and almost 5000 text messages). i suggest you attempt to work your phone a couple days without loading up any PIM information, archive messages and remove duplicates (sktools is excellent at doing this)
i suggest you do something similar, it really helps. i was able to get my device to prrform as well as when i still had the vanilla ROM
best of luck! your device is better than you think!
Also, use the Task Manager, and close applications that you don't use, especially the Internet browser and applications that use data connection. These ones can really block the phone when connection is intermittent.
Yet again, I'm left dumbfounded by claims of "serious" issues with this device. I just don't understand how almost everyone has a "story" regarding the HTC HD2 being SLOW or LAGGY. Fortunately for me, I haven't soft reset my unit in 46h 5m 19s and everything is still running flawlessly.
your phone sounds faulty or something. for me.. even with the Stock 1.66 ROM i had, it was working pretty fast n smooth. now with Dutty's ROM, its faster n smoother than ever. i love this beast
I never have these problem! I used Official or Clean EX HQ roms and never got these problem!
Try a Task 29 and flash with 1.66 Official or Most popular Cook ROM
Pa49: I have only installed the programs which I have listed in the first post. I guess im not the only one using them.
Kev007: I usually have a lot of textmessages when I dont delet them, but thats max 2000. I dont sync my phone with my computer, so no uneccessary contacts or something either. Dont even use calendar, so have no appointments.
Reignzone: It is really bad. It can happen upto three times a day, and I just cant use the phone at all. Just sliding the home-screen to see all my shortcuts takes maybe 10 seconds. I could film it with a camcorder next time it happens so people could see.
The same thing happens each time I've installed a ROM. So it has clearly something to do with the phone and not with the software I've installed.

I get lags too when twitter is updating in the background. You would think a 1ghz processor could do two things at once
Backup your miscrosd. Try a microsd format. Restore your data. See if this helps.
T-Mo US HD2, still completely stock. I was having some issues with sluggish animations, applied many of the tweaks in the sticky threads here, things got better. However, it was super super slow to switch into some applications (SMS *always*, others occasionally).
Eventually I wondered about that fancy Swype keyboard and tried switching back to the full qwerty. All that disappeared and it moves like lightning now, I have to say.
I haven't played with updating Swype or maybe at least loading a ROM without it that I can do a regular install on top of. However, right now I don't miss it .
Lag issues
I have no idea what is causing your issues, but if it travels from one rom to the next, it may be your sd card.
I had an issue with lag in swype and other apps.
I noticed when I popped out the sd card the device instantly unfroze.
I then copied all files except App data and reformatted the sd.
No issues after that.
Hope this helps.
Hello, this is my first post on XDA-Developers forum. Hope I placed in the correct section/forum.
I flashed my HTC HD2 with NexusHD2-Froyo V1.9G from Tytung which I will render thanks for making the ROM.
Everything works fine, except of Google navigator, this app freezes the phone. I need to remove the battery to shutdown the phone and boot again. First i have run Android from SD-card and also then Google navigator froze the phone. Thought this might have to do with running Android from Sd-card. Was happy with Adroid, so flashed the phone with the NAND version. Still the same problem with Navigator.
When running Navigator, can search location and location is also found, but when driving in my car, and the Navigator is following with the GPS it freezes. Screen doesn’t react and also the hardware buttons doesn’t react. At this moment the phone is really warm. So did install Setcpu and underclocked the CPU. Tried again and the same phone freezes. This time the phone wasn’t so warm, seems the underclocked did his work good.
Tried many other applications/games and no problem at all. Example the game Asphalt 5 HD works fine and the phone doesn’t seems to get very warm. (CPU at normal speed again)
Someone having the same issues or a solution?
Sorry for my bad English
I have exactly the same problem with my Leo - I tried several Android ROMs - same result. Bute I also had freezes as WM6.5 was installed so I think it`s a hardware problem as other Leo`s seem to work fine with Google Maps Navigation. On Monday I will get my new Leo - After flashing I will post any news as soon as possible.

I've the same problem on my HD2 on Android Rafpgina 4.2 Rom
It freez by about 5/10 mn using Navigation
Trying other Radios = same problem
Could you tell me if the change of your HD2 resolved the problem ?
It should suggest a gps chipset problem
Yeap, still the same problem and I can't figure out why.
I've tried more than 10 different apps, but allways the same. After some time the phone freezes. I remove the battery, start the app and after a while, the same.
I tried working with battery only or with car charger only, still the same.
I removed and brought back all my apps with titanium backup, still the same.
I have a suspicion that when it stacks and after rebooting, if I leave it in peace (I mean don't do anything with the phone, just keep it without running any app), for some time (10-20 minutes), then it starts and keeps the gps app more time, than the time of the initial freezing. Maybe this is a symptom that could ring a bell to an experienced guy...
Anybody, any ideas?
I use Leo with nand froyo 2.2
I do not ues google navigation, support.

If you are using gps navigation software on sd card, try format micro sd card with FAT32 and DEFAULT ALLOCATION SIZE option, do not choose allocation size such as 32,64 or any other except DEFAULT.
Try it and GL.

Thanks for the URL, I will follow that thread also.

Then free up your phone memory as much as you can, move everything you can on your sd card which is formated with FAT32 and DEFAULT ALLOCATION SIZE.
That was the exact issue I had with my phone.
iGO and Aura worked fine in the beginning but Google Navigation would freeze the phone at random times. Only solution was to pull out the batt.
Mine became worse when iGO and Aura also started loosing GPS lock and the only way to get it working again was to reboot.
In the end I sent my phone back to warranty and they replaced 'a board'
Working fine now.
Sorry, that I didn't replied earlyer. To busy with work and other things. I delivered the HD2 to Vodafone so they can hand over to repair, get a suggestion back, because they told this isn't within the guarantee. The printboard need to be replaced. I think they mention the motherboard and they told the battery gets to hot.(total costs €285,-) This isn't what my complain was, so answerred back that the phone freezes when enable the GPS module and not the battery gets to hot. Told the battery gets warm, because the phone get warm. Waiting now for an answer back.
Better late, then nothing. This is solved for me, found the same phone on marketplace a few months ago.
Thanks for helping me.
