Is there any FAQ/WIKI to understand how "Internet" "WAP" "Work" settings are used by various applications (PIE, messaging, google maps etc). Also how apps decide which one to use. ... Any pointer(s) please.
Thanks

i dont know if anyone can help me with this or i am just being thick and its allready possible to do, but i am having a horrible time with setting up my applications and using the internet.
I use quite a few applications that ask for either a network (Resco for acessing my files on my computer) and also the internet (mail, PIE etc).
i cant seem to strike a balance between these programs and the possible connections (Wi-fi / gprs), if i set up my internet connection as a proxy with the deatils for my acess point at home then i can get my files on my comp and acess to the internet. but as soon as i leave the bubble of my home then everything goes haywire.
is there a way to set up a hieracy and advanced rules for what connections to use for what programs and when? and possibly an option to ask before dialing a gprs connection?
any help would be great
thanks all
Dear friends,
I'm experiencing the following wired problem with my Sim-unlocked O2 XDA Neo (with original O2 software), which I'm using in Austria with the cell-provider tele.ring.
I've properly configured a new network-connection called "teler.ring GPRS" as described by my provider and it's possible for me to dial-in and connect.
When I start the WM5 IExplorer (or Opera Mobile) the phone dials in with GPRS and everything works fine as I'm able to surf the web.
Well unfortunately all other applications except those two (e.g. email, qmail, fring, skype, spbweather) are not able to use this internet connection - the email application for example tells me that the server cannot be found....
I have the feeling they are not accessing the proper network-connection. Is there any special profile I have to alter (e.g. network connection "ISP" or "O2 GRPS", etc.) with the GPRS settings so that the other applications can access the connection too?
How can I debug in this case to find where the problem could be?
Thanks for your help!
kr Andrew
There are two possible causes:
1) When you created the GPRS connection you did it under 'My ISP' correct?
If in the connections dialog you go to the 'advanced' tab and click 'network selection' you will see two drop-down lists. Make sure 'My ISP' (or whatever group your connection is under) is selected in both.
This way all programs will know to use it.
2) The other possibility is more problematic: some cell providers block traffic on all ports except standard HTTP ones (80, 8080) so any program that uses different ports (probably anything other than a browser) will not work.
You will have to settle this with your cell co.
Thanks for your reply,
add1)
Well I'm not quite sure where to find "My ISP"?
When I've created a new Networkconnection I directly wen to the connections dialog, "the advanced tab" and said "new" in one of the two drop-down lists.
After I've created this new connection, it is available in both of these drop-down boxes. After this, I selected it in both - so that all programs should acutally know how which connection to use.
add2)
I'm in email traffic with my cell provider, but actually - as they even offer email as an option - they actaually told me that the specfic ports (e.g .125 for IMAP) should not be blocked..
3) Is there a kind of network monitor for my PPC where I can read the exact statement of failure (e.g. use ping, or other network instruments)?
4) Is it possible that O2 (that's the software I'm using) has a predefined ports or application block on the device, as they I think are offering something like a gprs-flat?
Thanks for your help!

I don't have the answer for 3 and 4 (I know there are network tools just can't remember any right now) but I think your problem is in step two.
You created a new group for your connection and this may confuse some programs.
By default, when you open 'Settings->Connections->Connections' on the first tab you should see 'My ISP' in bold and under that a link 'Add new network connection'. You should create your GPRS connection through that link and not in a new group (don't go to advanced).
If it is not there that could be something O2 did with the settings and unfortunately I am not sure how to get it back.
WM has, in my opinion, a 'hard to understand' data connection setup.
Mine has 'vodafone GPRS, vodafone MMS, vodafone WAP, Internet, Work' and all of them contain several 'connections' or 'VPN'.
Problem is, not all programs can be set to use a certain connection.
Vodafone live via internet explorer needs Proxyserver, but Windows Live will not work than, etc etc.
Are there any tools to Manage all connections, Remove the not needed, and give some insight on what connections are available, active etc etc etc? Just a better one, than build-in WM6?
Take a look at this -

Not sure if this meets all your needs but this appears similar to what you have described
Hi everybody!
I have a little issue using my work's exchanger server connectivity on HTC Touch Pro.
Issue: To access internet, my provider uses their "walled garden" APN, which allows me to access their services & general web.
This APN, however fails to work with Exchange.
To overcome this, they have given me another APN, which allows me to access Exchange/Push & Internet but not their services.
Now, it is really, REALLY annoying have to change APNs every time I need to access different info (web vs. provider's page) and I have not been able to find anywhere to specifically point Active Sync to use the required APN as it only has option for "Internet", which I assume is the generic active access point
Dialling rules also are useless as I'm using HSDPA with no proxy to access web.
Apologies if this is all too confusing and thank you in advance for your assistance

Thank you!!!
So I have done that and can have 2 multiple APNs running at the same time!
It seems, however, that both connections have to be "ON" at the same time as when all APN are disconnected, it doesn't chose the correct data account but always the one that is higher on the list.
Is there a way to overcome this - is there a way to prioritise which data account I want to be used first?
Thank you again

Hi, I have a HTC Kaiser with BlackBerry Connect and I don't have the issues you describe. BBC creates it's own APN which is not used for anything else. In 'Connections' I have 'My ISP' set to use the Vodafone APN I manually defined. Under normal circumstances BBC keeps its own APN connection active, if I open IE or another app that uses the Internet then the Vodafone APN activates and the apps send their traffic over this connection.
One issue I have is that there is no way to disconnect only one APN connection, when you click 'disconnect' both APN connections are closed, however a few seconds later the BBC one reactivates.
EDIT: Sorry, scratch that... For some reason I though you were using BBC - don't ask me why, obviously my brain was wandering elsewhere. But back to your original problem. I don't use Exchange ActiveSync and I don't know if you can configure ActiveSync to use a specific APN like BBC? You might be able to configure the Exchange Servers URL to be in your Exceptions list so it uses your 'My Work Connection' instead of the 'My ISP' and therefore uses a different APN? I am not sure if it would work, but worth trying?

Hi Everybody !
I have a problem when using multiple APNs with my Samsung c6620 (WM 6.1)
I've configured two APN, one private APN for accessing work resources (Exchange activesync push e-mail and intranet web pages) and the operator "walled garden" APN to acess the internet .
I can access work resources (push e-mail and intranet web pages) but I can't access internet sites (i.e google). It opens both APNs but It seems like it doesn´t choose the correct APN but always the one that is at the top of the list.
If I close the work connection (and de-activate push e-mail) and try to access an internet web page, it works.
Can anybody help me?. Is there a way to overcome this?
Thanks in advance for your help
