Very good question! I want to know, too!
...unfortunately they donĀ“t light up at all
Who's stupid idea was that?? if they can bother to put a little led in the powerbutton......
I'm so glad they don't light up. If you are watching a movie on the HD or looking at a slide show of pictures, then lit up buttons would be an eye-sore.
It never happens to me that I don't know where a button is. I mean, it's only four buttons, spaced nicely apart from each other, and with haptic feedback. So, why do you need them to light up?

The trackball light flashes when the screen go out while in call because of the proximity sensor.
is there a way to stop that? It is really bothersome, specially when you're in a dark place.
Yer I hate it 2.....
Please someone fix this

tell the person to hold and clear your notifications?
you don't have to clear them, just drag down the status bar.
this is the only way I can think of.

you shouldn't have to do that is what we are saying its silly
just want a way to turn it off for good...
waste of batt
It's an led light, it uses as much battery as a static shock from the a carpet drag.
Hey...anything to set the Nexus One uniquely apart from any other smartphone is fine by me...breathing LED trackball light and all.
How often are you in a dark place exactly? People are entitled to their opinions of course, but something that barely isn't even noticeable when the phone is up to your ear doesn't exactly seem worth wanting to remove. As said before, the excuse it uses battery won't exactly work as well..
Whats up with this? Why do i see light shinning through the buttuns when i lock the screen and I can only see it when its pich black at night...??
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700211
No, see, mine glows even when the buttons arent lit up?
Like i said, if i "lock the screen" (which turns off the buttons) and its really dark in my room, and i let my eyes adjust to the darkness, i can see light glowing through the buttons. Try it. Maybe this is the cause of most battery drain issues?

Mine does that too. But not bright enough to notice unless it's pitch dark. I'm sure it is draining the battery a bit too though.
I know it prolly wont help this, but i cant wait till froyo comes out for the evo, its suppose to fix alot of bugs i.e. the 30fps thing
Im running froyo and it is wicked fast. zoom zoom zoom

I noticed this too - but I thought they were glow-in-the dark?
The track pad had a very dim red light in it when you wake the phone youll see it, its nothing like a notification in the center right side... Just questioning what it is and if we can get to it :/
once you see it youll always see it
I had no idea there was a light in there...ive noticed the red tint to it in some lights but assumed that it was something to do with the touch sensors

Yea the corner by genius button is just like yours.
I havent noticed a light on the trackpad tho. I even looked around for an app or something to activate it. No luck tho....
its not a light... its a dark red lens that covers the optical trackball... there is no (visible) light what so ever in there... you just held the phone at a odd angle in the right light...
go look at any other optical TB if you dont believe me...they all have a dark red hue (regardless of the battery status on the phone)
unplug phone from charger, pull battery and look closely, it'll still be red, and without power nothing could possibly be "lighting up"

i wasnt saying it was like a led its just a dim light thats behind it which looks red because of the cover on the trackpad... but seeing that made me question if there was a notification light down there like on the nexus one's trackball for instance
There is definitely a light on mine. I see it every time I wake the screen.

Noticed the dim red light too

i though it may just be light from the menu button peeping through but itll do it when the keys arnt lite up :/ hopefully its an led and we can get it brighter for notifications cus that'd be sick (thats one thing i would of liked how the g2 has it going around the pad)
Afaik the only light down there is infrared... if you can see it you got some sick ass eyes, or the lens on the trackpad is somehow reflecting the light or something... but like I said turn the phone off and pull the batt and I still see a faint red hue in the trackpad...

There is definitely a light in there that illuminates for a brief moment towards the left hand side of the button when you wake up the phone with the track pad. It is no reflection of the infrared, it's a light. Do it in a completely dark room and it will be obvious.
I don't have this at all. If it's a light, it would certainly be more obvious, no? How could a light be so dim?
I noticed this last night when I was cleaning my phone. It is definitely a dim red light.

Yeah definitely seeing it now too once it has been pointed out. It's more in the left center of my track pad.
I think it's just the trackpad sensor light, similar to the laser light under your optical mouse.
I don't see it doing anything but registering where your finger moves.

Is it just my device, or are the capacitive buttons on the Nexus S very very faint when lit?
They are near impossible to see in sunlight and still hard to see even in normal lighting. Any insight folks can give would be great. Is this just a thing with Samsung/Galaxy S devices?

Coming from a Vibrant where the buttons are nearly blinding (especially at night) I'm actually glad they are so dim on the Nexus S.
To answer your question more directly, yes, the button lighting is very dim.

Thanks, mate. This is my first Samsung device.
Thank you unremarked! I'm glad there is a thread about this. I feel they are very dim as well. :-/ Maybe we have a hardware issue? My Epic's buttons were extra, uhh Vibrant

i agree 100% with you, the buttons dont need to be lit when you're in direct sunlight and they dont need to be as bright as they are on the Vibrant when you're in low light. I think the nexus buttons are just right.

jblade1000 are your buttons dim as well? There is a picture in this thread with them looking extra bright...

Probably like the Captivate, buttons on my Captivate are really feint. My friend's Fascinate has really bright buttons.
I like it, I think that they are not so much more dim as shaded or tinted a greyish color. Notice how the buttons seemingly vanish, it gives the phone a murdered out look. I like it alot, I noticed it in the video and it really looks good with the new screen off animation.
Mine are pretty dim as well.
I like it too Its very professional and sick !!!
I guess to each his own. I believe I like the brightness on my Vibrant better than the dimmer effect on the Nexus S.
How to solve it? Thanks everyone.
Settings-display-turn off notification light.
Oh, it is not always light, but a little light.
I think you need to elaborate a little bit, not really sure what you are experiencing. Do you have a camera so you can take a photo of what you are seeing?
Yeah, could you take a photo to make yourself clearer please? I can't tell if you mean a small amount of light (i.e. the backlight of the display is still on) or a physically little light (i.e. the notification LED).
But no problems in the day, the problem is happens at night, when I lock my screen, there is little light on my screen, I fell worried. I can't take a photo, because photos can't press the problem. the problem is happened when all the lights have turn off.

So are you saying that your screen stays on when you try to lock it? Do you mean that the backlight always stays on and you only notice this issue when it's all dark?
How is your battery life? If your screen stays on I'd expect your battery to not last very long...
Still confused about your particular situation though
Oooh light bleed? Mine has one visible when booting on google loading screen

I think he's talking about that light when you press the power button. The transition effect. It looks like when you power off the TV. The old TV with the big butt.

But he says it's only happening at night... a power-off CRT animation would happen all the time
A quick look on the forum page and you can sort of tell this guy "skyme" is trolling for entertainment purposes. This post claims there is a light when you lock the screen at night, and his other post asks whether he can run Gingerbread 2.3 on his nexus 4.
Quit trolling and get a job buddy

Light bleed shouldn't be too much of a concern, because most of the time your screen will not be black and you will not be in complete darkness so the "problem" shouldn't be noticeable.
You are right. But it is really a problem. And thanks all the same.
