Too big, man. The Athena is significantly smaller.
it is not a PDA-Phone
it is an UMPC
7" Is just way to big
No weeping here they can keep it.
That is the HTC Shift. it has been well known for quite a while there are even much better pictures than that available. Areas of contention:
-Resolution was reported to be better specked than on your link
-Unconfirmed if it will run WM6, seems unlikely HTC would license 2 O/S for one device, ie costs to them and than users.
Looks very interesting. However, I don't find it appealing to me the same as way Athena. Portability factor is not as attractive as Athena. I prefer no keyboard (I like a tablet) and size no bigger than Athena. I like the storage capacity though. I don't know if running Vista on it would be sluggish and taxing on the battery, so let's wait and see. I wonder how easy it is for the phone to respond to incoming calls under Vista.
yea dude...thats the htc shift...that piece of crap is tooo darn big for a pocket...
Is this not like the cPC thing that flopped on a major level? With a dual boot between standard Windows and Mobile Windows?
Although, the fingerprint thing would be interesting for me with some of the software I'm using, but not for a major price increase........

Who says I can't have both? I have two pockets. Just have to make one pocket bigger than the other. ;-)
I'm trying to decide if I want to order one or not. My deciding factor was the built in GPS. Since I see that the Shift may have built in GPS, it's becoming more attractive to me. Just soooo damn big. 7" screen. I have a PVR that has a 7" screen with a 100gig HD and it won't fit into my pocket. Just too big. I leave it in my back pack. I don't want to carry my back pack just because my new phone is too big. Still deciding.
Carrying the Athena? (let alone anything bigger)
With respect to size, even the Athena is plenty big. I still haven't found a solution I like for carrying it with me. If I'm wearing pants with large pockets, that sort of works except for looking kinda freakish. And it really won't fit in some pockets.
I have also tried a camera bag that clips onto my belt. That lasted about 30 minutes. Just too dang bulky. So much of the time I carry it around like a little purse, which irritates me because I'm always afraid I'll forget it. (How do women do this??)
None of the commercial cases I've looked at have seemed like they will do what I want. The best solution I saw was a metal frame that hooks on to the stock case with a belt clip that this guy posted pictures of, but he hasn't responded to my inquiries about making me one!

My sentiments exactly! I need to carry it so I can have both hands free, ALWAYS. That means a belt case. My latest addition (3rd attempt) was a nintendo DS lite case. Guess what, it doesn't fit! Maybe we could persuade that guy with the metal clip to have a go for us, and give us a quote?

He hasn't responded to PMs and his email is hidden. Hopefully he'll check back some day and notice we're looking for him! For me, this might be the best approach. I really like the stock case (know I'm a minority there), but it does work for me. For example, sits flat for tabletop typing, EZ in/out of case to use it in tablet mode, keyboard pops right into place while still in the case, etc... EXCEPT for the missing belt clip.!!
I have absolutely no issue in carrying the unit around. This is what I have. I can either bring the keyboard with me or leave it behind.
http://forum.mypdacafe.com/viewtopic.php?t=14690&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=360
The device is well protected. Not a single scratch until now. The unit still look brand new.
They are available here.
Would any of you be interested in a small wrist lanyard or a neck lanyard that would be custom made for the kaiser? I am having some made for me, but I would need to order in bulk, and I don't have the need for more than one
Either way, I just talked to the rep who makes them, and I gave him some specific requests for a custom lanyard that would:
A: Not have any material that could scratch the Kaiser
B: Would have the smallest quick release connector made
C: Would have the smallest strap that would fit around your hand to get on your wrist, thus leaving only the minimal hanging strap when in a case.
D: Would be Black to match the Kaiser
E: Could have custom imprinting on the strap to say.... Kaiser, TytnII, HTC, whatever we would want it to say.. or nothing at all.
Let me know if anyone would be interested. I'm pretty sure the cost would be less than a few bucks... Either way I will be ordering them for myself.
JB

Yes, and I've liked this type minimal length lanyard for other small things like cameras as well, that's why I'd like a couple.
If you're putting a quick release on it anyway; how about making a wrist strap & a neck lanyard matching pair that has the same connector... easy to switch off between them. I think that'd be cool and worth a few extra bucks.

Note, thay also make an attachment that threads through any spot meant for a camera type wrist strap. Not sure if the Kaiser has one of these, but it looks like it may from the pictures I have seen.
The thing I like about this system is that you can use the clips with more than one device.
One thing to note though, I tried the Harmony headphones with my 8125, and could only get one side of the headphones working. Seems the 4pin 2.5mm connectors used on the 8125 do not have any type of standard for how they are wired. I am guessing this would not be the case with the Kaiser, but you would need to use the usb to 3.5mm adapter in conjunction with the rivet offerings.

Thanks for the link... but the lanyards they have, use metal adapters and that is what I am trying to avoid. The metal adapters will scratch the device. Not to be too anal, but when you pay 800 for a device, it's always a good idea to keep it in mint condition to have a good resale when the next hot device comes out.

Spend a bit more and get this then...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=333707
I'd say it has easily prevented $20 worth of scratches on my wife's iPhone already and it also has just a slightly tackier feel to it, so the phone doesn't slip out of your fingers as easily, although the OP on this link indicates the Kaiser already has a tacky backplate, probably for that very reason.

Thats a great idea as well... But my own reason for wanting a lanyard is to help me pull the device out of the belt case that I use to carry it in... Almost everytime I have dropped a phone, it has been when I am taking it out of the case... With the lanyard on it, It will be easier to pull out, as well as keep it from hitting the ground.
I have been super busy at work, but I will be making the phone call very soon to get the lanyards...
JB
Well... I just finished getting a quote for the lanyards...
Looks like my idea is getting stomped...
The company wants a minimum order of 100 units at 1.52 per unit... That means I would have to dish out 160 dollars... Thats fine with me, but I'm concerned I wouldn't be able to get the money back...
Also, they won't send out one neck lanyard and one wrist lanyard with a cell conector, since it would mean that they would have to have more male connectors than female connectors. So the only way is to order half of the lanyards as 36" and the other half as 12"...
Either way, they are very nice lanyards and I really want a few for myself. If you all think I could get rid of 90 of them then I will go and order them...
Another Idea I had, was to have, "XDA Developers" prnted on the lanyard, and the site can use them as a way to help get donations.... such as selling lanyards for 5 bucks or so...
Gimme some feedback if ya all would please.
JB

I take enough pride in my geekness to buy something branded with XDA Developers, but I don't have a need for a lanyard.
It's a pretty good idea though. You may want to get it out to a broader audience via another more general post, as I am sure the interest would apply for other devices as well. Me thinks one of the moderators should be able to help out with this.
Ok, I will order the Lanyards with, "XDA Developers" on the lanyard. The lanyard will be polyester black, and the text will be a dark grey. I'm not into big bright text, I like being low key.
It will be 50 neck lanyards and 50 small wrist lanyards.
I don't think I will have an issue getting them outa my hands.
JB

I am a bit of a loser for a lanyard!!!

1 wrist & 1 neck

Is there anyway to use the touch screen as a scale? I mean is there a program that will let you measure the pressure your "finger" incurs on the screen? Now there has to be a way to convert that to grams/ounces. I would imagine that it would take a certain amount to even activate the digitizer and it could very well be the equivalent to a minimum of .5g and that's fine with me. An operating range from .5-5g would be optimal.
I just thought this would be very useful.
i believe that there is a point og g to activate
and thats if
a timer deside when the contex menu come about
normal touch screens even pasive digtizers on tablet pc's
only do on and off registration
active digitizerts on tablets though support preasure measuring
That's your idea of an "ultimate application"? More like the fastest way to break your screen

I believe it to be one of the ultimate applications because it transforms your phone into something completely different silmutaneously increasing it's resourcefulness as a digital "swiss army knife" for the modern world. What other application does that (short of a TV remote)?
Are you familiar with the force of 5 grams? I don't believe you are or you wouldn't think it would break your screen. I guarantee that you put, on average, at least 8 grams of pressure everytime you touch your screen.

haha u read the words outa my mouth ;x that would be gangster tho
Alternatively you could try making some scales into a phone.
Haha, i realize 5g is very light...But as mentioned above the only thing I can think of that would be useful to weigh between .5 and 5g would be some white powdery substance
Otherwise, if I new it was less than 5g, I wouldn't weigh it. Problem is someone might try to weigh something much heavier and yes, break the screen
Or I could replace and reinforce the external GPS antenna cover and make it a bottle opener also.
Or I could program it to emit the proper frequency to start my "keyless" car key.
Anyways, this is all just for fun, so, don't worry, I'm not trying to tweak you.

Oh, oregano! Makes sense with your screen name being Chef
A little more green? Smokin a little herb are we? Or are we selling?
I think we're onto something here. We need better touchscreens that can handle more force.
Imagine the perfect windows mobile diet phone which can tell you how much weight you've put on, find you a diet plan online. And order a pizza when it can tell you don't care anymore.
Who cares about fingertip scrolling when we finally bring the phone into the real world and make it fix other problems too.
I think a built-in stun device would be cool. And a personal alarm. A decent torch. A proper flash camera with a zoom feature. Maybe we make the zoom strong enough and big enough to take a person's weight. Who needs stepladders anymore!
I think a built in printer could help but needs to support full A4 sheets. Maybe it can scroll up and down a page until it's printed. And can we adjust the camera so it can act like a proper scanner? A portable colour photocopier is born!
I'll stop there but as you can see, the possibilities with this magical device are amazing!
LOL
i really think theres no such thing as ultimate application
i really depend on how this application will help your needs and so that way it will be very useful

It should of course be able to monitor ovulation, blood pressure, heart rate (full ECG), blood oxigen level, blood sugar level, prothrombin ratio and last, not least my need for coffee.
And my next SIP should read my mind. Voice control and T9 are a bit old fashioned, right?
I want a phone that also works as a lightsaber.
if you smoked the "oregano"
all applications you come up with seem ultimate
and all old cake leftovers taste like the best thing in the world

You are better off getting to know your “oregano” and learn to estimate the weight accurately. Maybe if you would need this for “sugar” or “brown sugar”, weighting something under 5g’s would be in some use.

Ok it seems there is a bit of interest for the ultimate urban tool that will give the HTC Diamond the street cred it deserves. Therefore I’ve decided to professionalize the thread as humorously as possible
Below are the application details and status
Executive Summary:
The ultimate urban tool that will use the built in pressure sensor of the HTC Diamond LCD Touch screen to measure the weight of light objects down to 0.1grams.

Haha i will use it and paid money to... max 15 dollars (thats what's left on my paypal account). This will be the coolest app ever made And verry handy for on the streets indeed.
Then You will not need a digital weigh in your pocket for your street bussines
hmm, don't think of it as very useful... It could weigh from about 4 grams to maybe 40 grams, regarding the fact that the weight has to be concentrated at one point and not distrubuted over the surface. The fact that keeps me holding back is that the result from weighing someting over 100 grams could easily end op in a sound and screen effect not coming from the program (KKrraaack with the screen affect of shattered glass)
lol, thats a funny idea
it sounds like a funny idea but dont think it will work
because of the difference in screenprotectors - some screenprotectors are thicker so you need more pressure, some dont even use screenprotectors (like me... BIGGGG MISTAKE! when i wanted to apply my screenprotectir my screen was already scratched! so i left the protector off.. but now i have even MORE scratches.. but oh well..)
just test it, turn your clicking sound on for you screen and hold your stylus at the very top and drop the end on your screen, you'll notice that you will not get any feedback, so maybe just like hellboy said mabye t would work from 4 grams
and your screen! it would damage i think when putting someting above 500grams (maybe even with lower amount of grams)
it could be done..
it would be fairly easy FOR SOMEONE WHO HAS THE PATIENCE AND THE KNOWLEDGE OF SCRIPTING APPS!!
because there are apps already that show how much pressure you're appying on your screen and gives you feedback in color...<<< i think that part is easy because i think there will be some snippets from codes around the net that do that.. but i think the hard part>>> is programming the ammout of grams that is put on the screen..

It would be useful for any jewelers who need to weigh stones and gold in small quantities, but the accuracy will need to be very very high for this kind of application.

I don't think your gonna get this kind of accuracy from a touch screen, besides I don't even think it will work!
A touch screen works by having two charged membranes over the top of each other, as soon as these membranes make contact it allows a voltage to pass through it. So how hard you push will not mean the voltage is increased and therefore won't make a difference.
Would be a sweet app though!
Why dont they make a flash tool that plugs into your micro usb port or replaces the battery cover, so we can finally take pictures with a flash?
I dont believe this would be too hard..would it?

Which is better, a less than ideal photo (and I'm not a photographer so cant confirm the effects) or a far to dark/totally black photo?
I know NOTHING of programing these phones, but from a mechanical stand point, I'm not too bad. Is there anyway to trigger something out the USB port when the camera is ready to pop? Something so that the light doesn't have to be on constantly, but can come on only when the camera is ready to snap, like a standard digital camera works? I can probably fab up a back cover with a flash built into it...
Why is this an issue? I fail to see any correlation at all between the equipment used by a professional photographer, and the convenience of a simple 3MP snapshot camera included in your phone. You were given a suggestion that addressed your problem and apparently you were quite upset by it. So, my turn... This IS NOT a 10 - 12 MP Canon, Nikon or Leica! Its to snap a quick shot of something for later reference - an event, a schedule, a location, a photographic note, if you will. The camera in your phone is not the primary device or function of your phone - its an 'added function' that can be effectively used as intended, or complained about by those that can't fully appreciate its capabilities!
Oh, and those professional cameras listed above don't make or receive phone calls, don't have e-mail or voicemail capabilities, don't play my mp3s or videos, can't use wifi to browse the internet or for online banking or for etc., store GBs of data other than pics & video, function as a gps unit, open or edit my Office docs, use text messaging, or play a myriad of games! And yet they cost from $699 to $999 apiece! How do those manufacturers' sleep at night? And you won't find a forum for support anything near as intense and complete as the XDA-Developer's Forum - all for what you can afford to donate!
Now I don't mean to preach, so here's examples: instead of a daily to-do or task list, I can take a quick series of photos to remind me! Pix of ATM card to remind me to go to the bank, of a loaf of bread or carton of milk to remind me to hit the grocery store, of the Suburban's front end to call for an appointment to get the front-end aligned, of the dog to remember his vet appointment, and of a document I need to complete by end-of-business! Those pix are worth a thousand words, and the time it would take to write detailed notes to myself! Then simply delete photos as tasks are completed! Too cool! At the store over lunch and see a new Sony LCD HDTV you like? Take a photo of it, along with the pertinent sales tag info, and research it later at home on the internet! Meet someone you haven't seen in a while? Take a photo to remind yourself to tell the wife that night, with that picture to enhance your tale! Need to match paint for a room in the house with the colors of the furnishings or rugs? Take a series of pictures with you to the hardware store. Take a photo of a suspicious vehicle 'just in case'? An accident, a surprise event, a crime or disaster? You at least have the camera in your phone - its way better than no camera at all. For your 'Keepsake Memories' get a decent camera, complete with a flash!
Hope this helps put things in perspective for you.
BTW, this was a rant - not a discussion or an argument, so keep your opinions to yourself. I've said what I wanted to say!

When I started this thread I did not intend it to go out of control. I was just wondering if anyone knew where to get one or how to make one.
This is more along the lines of what I was looking for, except for the Kaiser instead of the iPhone: http://www.techeblog.com/index.php/tech-gadget/snaptureflash-gives-iphone-makeshift-camera-flash
I think a new back cover that has a built in flash would be awesome. If someone makes one, and it works, I'll certainly buy one.
I think about how much I miss my flash on my old phone all the time. That was a huge blunder leaving it off the Kaiser. Even if you never use a flash on your pictures, it was a handy flashlight. But it was certainly nice to have a flash for pictures too.

Don't worry, the thread isn't 'out of control' you just need to take heed of what kilrah has already posted. The USB port on the Kaiser isn't a host port so it doesn't (and cannot be made to) behave like an ordinary USB port on your PC (well not without some serious electronic redesign work far beyond what we as non phone designer sorts could come up with). Other options must be investigated.
Was the USB comment directed at me? I was just wondering if there was a way to trigger the flash 'remotely'.
as for some sort of add on flash, my dad has made several LED units, self contained, that fit in a 3/4 inch copper pipe cap. Mostly made of brass, it includes a switch and is heavy. He used it as a night lite for something like 7 days str8 on a single 2032 battery. Granted, it is not sleak, but it was self contained.
The main problem with a 'flash' is that the camera app wouldn't be able to process the picture any faster (focus on it and make adjustments for light) before snapping it because the camera app wouldn't know that a flash would be coming soon to compensate for a flash... unless we have a camera programer in our midsts? Or, can a camera app be ported from a flash enabled device, or do the OEM flashes stay on as long as a flash is called for, so there is no 'compensation' per se?
I am getting ready to purchase a TyTN II parts phone, I'll have to see what I can do with it. I've got a few ideas up my sleave. Does anyone have what the Proprietary USB B port pin out is, both sides of the tongue?
if anyone makes this invention i will gladly buy it from them ASAP
Heh, I've started working on it... at this point, I'm not working on making it interface with the camera, it will have an external switch and be something you turn on when you want it, and could also be used as a flashlight to light your way in the dark...
I am also toying with having it light up when ever the camera is in use, but I need to find a dead kaiser (the phone I own, so the phone I'm developing for) in order to work on some sort of interface for automatic operation...
Anybody got a Kaiser with a crushed screen and case that I could tinker with? *grins*

I used the flash on my S710 as NIGHT LIGHT all of the time. I think an external flash able to slide in an touch the battery contacts would be cool. Een if you had to turn on the light by a little switch built into the back cover. 5V should be MORE than enough power to light up maybe 3-5 small LED lights. Even if they werent connected to the cam directly, im sure it would help a lot in low light situations. Just my 2 cents I like this idea
I am in the process of comunicating with LED suppliers, and will begin mocking something up here in the coming weeks... I'll keep you posted.
A couple of questions for potential users... What is better, to make a cradle to slip the phone into, to make the components fit completely with in the format of the phone now, or to make the phone slightly larger (like an extended battery pack)?
The advantage of a craddle is that it can be put on and removed fairly quickly... Downside is that it would be hardest for me to make... (grins)
The advantage of the lights fitting within the format of the phone now is that you don't have to have something extra, or an extra large phone, to carry around. Perimatly mounted, and ready to go at all times... the down side is reduced performance because of no extra batteries, and possibly fewer LEDs, and the fact that the owner of the phone would possibly have the hardest time installing it.
The advantage of an extended battery type back cover is that you can get extended battery usage (by use of separate batteries for the LEDs), and nice balance between easy on/easy off and size... the downside is that the phone would be slightly larger, and you would have to carry the extra back cover if you didn't always want the phone bigger, but wanted the option for a flash.
The cradle idea would be the most expensive by far, and quite probably out of my reach at this time.
The extended back and original size formate are going to be fairly close in price I have the feeling.
The extended back will probably be the easiest to build, but personally, I'd rather not use that style.
So, what do _YOU_ think?
I think Mag light and all problems solved
Seems alot to do for a camera that isn't very good anyway, but good enough for snapshots.............. After all it's not an SLR..............
The best one, in my opinion, would be an entirely new battery cover that had LED lights mounted in it, and was not any bigger than the original battery cover.
Something that is permanently mounted, and basically a part of the phone, and not making the phone any bigger (it's already a brick). Maybe a little larger than the regular battery cover, but not a lot. Hopefully not enough to notice. I'm not worried about battery life as this would only get used for a few minutes every day (at the most).
I don't know if that is even possible, but if it is, I'll take 4 of them.
Nobody ever uses an external GPS receiver, so maybe the stuff could go in right there?

Yes, a maglite would work... but I take many photos with my camera when I can't put both hands in position to illuminate the subject and hit the shutter... I go to the car salvage yard alot, and if I can't see a part good enough from my vantage point, I'll hold my phone up and snap a picture from there to see if it is worth digging for, for example.
As for it not being an SLR, MOST digitial cameras are NOT slr... and MOST people do not shell out tons of money for an SLR. If you don't like the camera phone, that's fine... you can carry a second item. For the rest of us, we'd like to improve on a decent useable camera, so we will, Thank you.

Hehehe, my wife never uses her GPS at all, but I use an antenna adapter from Wilson Electronics along with a mini whip antenna with a magnetic mount... it go from 1-2 bars on a bad day (with TomTom Navigator 6), to a full count of 5 bars... unplug the antenna, and it goes back down, plug it back in, and it bounces back up...
I've looked into using that area, but it really doesn't afford much in the way of space, and I'm not too keen on modifying the original fabric of the phone itself, it just doesn't seem 'right' to me.
