Sending Files via WiFi - Touch HD General

Hi.
I bought HD yesterday and its great but there are a few things that i cant do.
Is there any way to access the phone internall memory or SD card using wifi?
Ofcorse i can do it by usb but i have wifi networks at home, work, friends house and it would be much simpler to do it this way.
I succesfully connect to wlan and internet on phone works perfectly but cant find the way to transfer the files.
I tried typing IP adress of the device (ex: "\\192.168.1.4") like i would do to access another PC shared files but it wont work.
Never worked on WM before so its rather guesing than knowing how to do something but i assume that it is much alike normal win.
I just find out that i can browse my PC shared files using internet browser on HD but rather do it other way around (browsing on my PC files from HD and/or SD card.)

as far as i know. windows mobile doesn't natively support sharing/server. so you would need to run a third party application on your phone which acts like a server. actvesync used to let you sync using wifi, but not anymore.

I use "Total Commander" it's free and will enable you to see other drives on your LAN. You can even use/view two windows on your HD to drag and drop from your LAN to the SD card.

Yes, I also use Total Commander, it also does FTP. Get it here

its not exactly what i had in mind but it works good enough and its so much better than using browser
thx guys

yes, i believe the two above posts went a little tangent-didn't address your exact concern, but they are nice work around indeed. in that case, i offer my work around as well. I used Resco Explorer with FTP plug in, so you can transfer files to and fro.

Run a server like mochaFTP on your phone.
A simpler solution is not to use wifi at all, but to use bluetooth. Bluetooth 2.0 runs at about 100 kb/sec, which is not too bad for small file transfer and it integrates well with Windows.
See here for a tutorial: http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=1028
Surur

unfortunately (or i should say fortunately?) i dont have bluetooth in my PC.
its simpler but also worse solution because it would take almost 15h to transfer a 700MB movie file with this transfer :O
I'll stay with totalcomander solution. Its simple, fast and its using wifi conection which i have access to almost everywhere i go

Browing local network / shares via Wifi?

Hi
I've managed to successfully map & connect to 'file shares' on the several computers that i have on my local homegroup...using the standard 'explorer' within Duttys excellent WM6 build.
However this is being done whilst my Tytn is physically connected via USB & Activesync to my computer.
It is possible to see the local network, browse & connect to share folders, as i am doing currently but via Wifi!? - Thus not needing the depandancy on my laptop & usb? - Basically see the network & browse it the same way as all my other computers do...?
Can it be done with what is installed explorer or do i need a special program? - if so, whats good & free?
Ciao
Al
Yes. It is possible. Have used total commander and the built-in explorer to browse my network shares.
Many thanks, i shall give it a go...
P.S. sorry for my typo "Browing" - meant Browsing of course ;-)
hi there, you can try this one - http://www.vmobilesoftware.com/NetworkBrowser.htm it is much much comfortable. not tested on WM6 yet on my side, perhaps you can test is, and tell us if it work correctly. I have no free time
PS: I think that Resco Eplorer should be suitable for you also - http://www.resco.net/pocketpc/explorer/indepth.asp
Hi Sinmae
I shall certainly give this prog a whirl...
In the meantime, it seems that the built in Explorer, once a drive is mapped, CAN re-connect via Wifi to it....... I've been using my Tytn as an MP3 play wirelessly... by listenning to my files on an external drive that is mapped as a share on my laptop, which in turn connects via wifi..... The HTC default earphones are to shabby either... & this is from someone who owns a set of Shures!!!
However it is a manual process to map... you cant' sniff out & browse shares that are already there on other network machines... you have to key them in & hope for the best. - Therefore the prog you suggest might be good.
Cheers
Al

Air Sharing for Windows Mobile?

First things first, I'm not new to the forum...and I apologize for creating a thread for this!
So I was in the iTunes app store for my iPod Touch and I came across this ultimately cool app: Air Sharing
http://www.avatron.com/products/
This program lets you use the iPhone/iPod Touch as a virtual drive, available with pw protection.
Do any of you know if theres something like this for Windows Mobile Phones? Or if someone is interested in developing something like this?
There are apps that will turn the PDA into a USB disk. I prefer just running a small FTP server on the PDA to dump my files via WiFi whenever I need to.
Now if someone could only port a SSH server as well so I could tunnel traffic though SSH, that be sweet.
really? Do you mind posting up the usb app or something like that?
it's called wmstorage i think the most recent one is 1.8 you should be able to search in dev and hack and find it
what type of device do you have?
wm5 storage works really well, also softick card export will show on pc as usb drive. but these are not wireless.
wow thanks a lot for all the suggestions, though the wireless part of air sharing is totally cool. I'll be sure to look into the suggestions tho
So does anyone know how to make something like air share? I have the touch, since I dont like the iPhone..(weird i know) but the touch uses wifi so it couldnt keep a stable internet connection all the time thus not allowing me access files on it all the time as well..
Any chances a developer out there would take a look into something like this?
a Friend had Airshare on his iphone,
he come to me, had my WLAn Key...
he startet Airshare, give me an Link (from his Iphone)
i write it to my Internet Explorer at PC, and TATA, i can download or Upload Files to the Iphone
needs some seconds Time, that i can Upload Files to Airshare
WOW WOW WOW
this is really cool
i search as well an Ap for WM like Airshare.
Bump this thread, very interested in an app like this, used the air sharing today on an iphone and would love to be able to use my phone as a wireless drive. Ive tried things like mocha ftp and can only send from phone to computer not the other way. Appreciate any help with finding an app for winmo!
Thanks in advance.
edit double post.
I use mocha and I can send from the computer to the phone just fine. If you're having problems doing that, try using a dedicated FTP client like FileZilla.
Here is my good deed of the day:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-serversman.html
I tested, checked for any issues and found none. It literally setups your phone as a server.
However, it a very little known app. Play at your own risk.
Very kind. Thank you for your speedy response. This is why I love XDA Devs.
OK. Slightly delayed response here... However, I'm considering switching back to a WinMo phone and ditching the restricted iPhone... However, I would like to ensure that I have the same functionality on my WinMo as I do with my iPhone, so I'm looking for similar or same apps before I make the switch... Looks like "Air Sharing" has a WinMo comparable app: www . mobile-stream . com / airshare . html ... Mobile Stream's "Air Share"...
Does the mobile-stream work for windows mobile to use it as a secondary monitor for computer?
also I notice its only for bluetooth. Is there on for just using internet ?

Possible to access SD card via WiFi from computer?

Rather than hooking up my G1 via USB, is it possible to access the SD card via WiFi from a PC or Mac?

I believe installing a FTP server app on your phone can solve this. I have used SwiFTP from Market and it works like a charm.
Regards,
From_Vanov
There is a market app called aFile (used to be Discover) that works for this very well.

hmmm...
I use the app on a daily basis and it has never once crashed or not worked. Guess I'm just lucky.
aFile/Discover doesn't work all that well anymore. It --used-- to work great, but the developer hasn't seemed to keep up with the OS changes. Combine the developers update plus the "Cupcake" releases, you get problems connecting.
So, here's a couple of suggestions. All of these connect over WiFi.
Probably the easiest is Estrongs File Explorer. It will allow you to connect to Windows shares (Samba shares) from your phone and transfer files in either direction.
Another very simple solution is to run SwiFTP on your phone. It's a simple FTP server for your phone. Then you can use Filezilla (or any FTP program on your computer) to connect to your phone via FTP and transfer files back and forth. Make sure you keep the port as 2121, otherwise it won't work.
My personal favorite is a bit different. I set up a Filezilla server on my home network. It's very simple to set up. Then use AndFTP on your phone to connect to the FTP server you are running on your computer. You can take it one step further and have it installed on your home network. Go to dynsys.org and register there. Follow the instructions (fairly simple). This will give you the added benefit of being able to access your files anywhere in the world as long as the Filezilla server is running on your computer/network and your computer hasn't gone into sleep/hibernate AND you have your router configured correctly.
If you need help with any of this, please contact me. This is a feature that I've desperately needed, and I've looked at many different solutions and can probably help you make the right decision and get it working properly.
An another good FTP client for Windows is Total Commander. In the (unlikely ) case you are not using it already, it is a very good file manager. I almost cannot live without it
Thanks blueheeler for the info.

It may have something to do with the combination of things.
I know "Discover" worked for me, then aFile came out, and it doesn't.
Here's what I'm using:
Vista x64 Ultimate (also tried on Win 7 RC x64)
Belkin router
JF1.51 (also tried with various Dude versions)
Broadcom 4322AG WiFi driver
I did recently switch from 32 bit Windows to 64 bit if that makes a difference.
Tried with:
a) with Vista firewall
b) Vista's firewall disabled + phone in DMZ
c) Vista's firewall disabled + laptop in DMZ
d) Vista firewall off + router firewall off

Drive Mapping

Hi everyone,
I am new here and the owner of a HTC Snap for about one month now. However, I was wondering if it is in any way possible to map network drives (linux and windows) from my home lan on my snap through WIFI?
I've been trying to google this, but couldn't find a definite answer on this issue.
Standard devices (non touch screen) lack the abiltity to browse a network. Total Commander will get you half way there, but instead of using the IP address use the NetBIOS. You will have to find an older version of TC, since the newest version has had the LAN connection removed for Smartphones.. Resco may still have it though
You can use Microsoft Live Mesh (the beta is open enrollment) goto www.mesh.com sign in then select add then at the bottom of the screen you will see a link that says something like "use mesh on your mobile phone" click that to get the .cab file, once installed onto your device you can connect to live mesh, which you can then set up to shared folders on your network.
Thnx for the reply. To bad that I can't set up any drive mapping and quite strange that Microsoft didn't implement such features while mobile phones have WIFI on them.
That live mesh seems like a handy solution though. However it looks to me like all the data passes through the internet, even when I'm at home. If this is the case then it wouldn't be a very feasable solution because it would take ages before I would have moved large files if my mobile phone operator is in between my data connection.

Yeah, that how it works (mesh over the internet) not the greatest solution but it will work. There are other options but most of them involve sending the data over the net.
Like I said, you can get it to work (drive mapping)

Network storage APP

Is there an app for my HD2 that will allow me to browse a shared folder on my PC via wifi? I have a Shared folder on my network that all of my computers and XBOX360 get videos and music from, I am looking for an app that will allow my HD2 to access those files. I'm running the energy ROM.
the HTC Network Plugin , just search for it, works fine on my HD2 , lets you map a network folder ..
Give it a search ...
Resco File explorer will work as well. I haven't been completely happy with it though and will give the above mentioned HTC solution a try. My problem with Resco could be my network though so don't shy away from trying it.
