G1 - Can you search Word Docs? - G1 General

I am looking to replace my trusty Hermes, and the two contenders are the Iphone and the G1.
One of my essential requirements is to be able to open a Word doc, and then search for a key word. In Windows Mobile, this can be done via Menu, Edit, Find/Replace.
I have now discovered that this is not possible on the Iphone, which can merely read a Word doc. So the Iphone is, for me, a non-starter.
Can someone please tell me whether this word search can be conducted on a G1?

No search. As of now the only thing the g1 can do with .doc files in view them in the browser in google docs.

Thanks for the response. Unless a third party app comes out soon, I guess I will have to stay with a Windows Mobile device. What a shame.

Softwares for Windows Mobile

I would like to have following softwares on my windows mobile 5 phone (imate SP5). I don't know if any freeware software exists or not but if they don't i may give a try developing few of them.
DISCLAIMER: If you think some of these are already present in WM5 or don't make sense, don't laugh, just let me know. I am a newbie for windows mobile.
1. A basic notepad.
2. A feature/hook which would enable copy/paste operation in every textbox. 2a. A feature that would allow to paste frequently used text/phrases in every textbox.
3. Word, Excel like application with view/edit facility (of course, cannot develop this one
4. Software to explore files on my PC from my mobile. Ability to setup networking share over a bluetooth/WiFi connection between a PC/mobile and a mobile/mobile would be good. Ability to copy/paste the files.
4a. RDP from PC to Mobile and vice versa.
5. Chat over Bluetooth/WiFi between PC/mobile and mobile/mobile.
6. Video/Audio streaming between PC/mobile and mobile/mobile over Bluetooth/WiFi. Ability to use mobile as a web cam/mic.
7. A good todo list manager with reminders etc. (I don't know why but the Tasks application inbuilt in my mobile is totaly featureless. I can enter a new task but cannot set its priority, reminder, start/end dates, etc.) Synchornization with Outlook.
8. Tabbed IE Browser.
9. A wallet type application to store personal data.
10. Following app: Based on specific tower id (mobile network tower), changes the profile of the mobile from normal to silent and vice/versa.
11. Software similar to command prompt or Run Command in windows.
12. Call recorder.
13. A better task manager.
14. Expense manager.
15. Stopwatch.
16. Better calculator than provided by default in WM5.
17. Registry Editor.
18. RSS Reader.
19. Use mobile as a remote control for TV (over infrared)
for PC (like playing stopping songs on PC) over bluetooth/WiFi.
20. Bike/Car Odometer recorder.
If applications exist, well and good. If they don't, as already stated, I might give them a try. However, I would like to have pointers on how to develop. I know .net but am poor in native code.

please ask google first for those questions. and I'm sure if you had, you had seen this wonderful site:
www.pocketpcfreewares.com
I did google. That's the first thing anybody would do. But could not find much.
And the site link you have sent is in a non-english language. Is there english version?

there are two flags....one French and on English...if you press the English flag the French site, magically, turns into an English site and vice versa... Man,you are too lazy....don't ask others to find what you want.... Also if you have searched google,as you say,you would have found, that if you type for example "notepad wm5 ppc",a nice notepad would appear on top of the list "Pocket Notepad"...
Thanks man.... I did look there for such thing... just didn't notice...
Most of the apps you requested do exist.
I am not going to do the search for you but here are a few hints:
1) SoftMaker has very powerful Word and Excel replacements and I remember them releasing a smartphone version a while back.
2) Total commander is free and works great on PPC should work fine on SP as well for file browsing locally and over WiFi.
3) Pocket Controller for RDP from PC to SP and try LogmeIn for SP to PC.
4) Minimo is slow but practically the most powerfully browser for Win Mo. and it has tabs. (Also free)
5) PHM is a free reg editor.
And there are plenty of other apps.
He who seeks shell find!
Sorry to say this but a Windows Mobile phone might be too advanced for you if you can't figure out search engines.
***MOD EDIT***

How to "run" Linux apps on WM6?

I have two Linux apps, Tuxcards & Kontacts, for which I am urgently looking for data compatible WM6 apps.
Any suggestions?

you can import and export .vcf-style vCards.

I realized that about Kontacts myself by now.
But what about the XML file format of Tuxcards?

Not sure what exactly you trying to do ... but I am a long time Linux desktop user. Synchronising my HD2 with Kontact (the contacts and appointments) over SynCE and OpenSync without problems.
Syncing is of no interest for me, as I never use that unreliable process anyway.
Never sure what gets overwritten where.
I have TONS of tech notes stored in my Tuxcards archive which I need for my work. So I'm desperately looking for an XML viewer for my SmartPhone that can handle/display the TuxCards archive.
I've read a TuxCards look-a-like tool called BasketNotes, but it also only exports in HTML format.
And that makes the entire Collapsible Tree functionality of Tuxcards go away.
Its a real pain in the rear trying to browse through hundreds of static web pages on a smart phone.
Anyone know of a way to easily import Tuxcard XML archives e.g. into Phatnotes?
bump...bump...bump
Sorry, but I'm still looking desperately for an XML Reader for WM6.
Anyone got any ideas here?

Hhhmm, I had googled my eyes out for an XML WM6 reader and couldn't find *anything* other than Porn Sites & Crack Torrents....
I'll try the Haali Reader for starters.
Thankz a lot...
I tried all of those your Google list came up with and none works.
The best I get is some notepad like prog which reads XML like a flat text file.
Not one of them even cares to interpret the inner structure of the XML data, so no chance of a snowball in hell to get a hierarchical notebook like layout of it :-(
Specially that Haali app was a big disappointment here.
And even apps like phatnotes only support plain text file imports and TuxCards doesn't export to plain text....(only to HTML)

The question wouldn't be that stupid if not for the ABYSMALLY LOUSY quality of that HTML export
While TuxCards itself offers dynamic tree navigation, the exported HTML file is one big static dump, w/o proper font sizing and minimal (if any) graphic support.
In essence, its a pain in the rear to review, specially on a PocketPC device.
I think they just put it in there to have something listed under "Export" (just like the PhatNotes folks with their lousy Text Only import "feature").

how to copy\paste from GMAIL?

hi all
trying to edit text in the gmail app
but can not copy paste from one mail to another
or from an email to lets say a note in AKNOTES
how do i get the edit text options inside a mail?
AFAIK this is not possible ... its a pain in the ass ....
no way!!!!!!!
why??????
there is no app for that either?
is there a way to write to google that they'll alow it
in the next update?
you can use the web implementation of GMAIL mail.google.com in your browsers, pretty good too !
Agreed it is a pain, the other missing major feature is sharing contact details between android phones, in fact between any phones and android.
so lets write to google about it
there must be something they can do to improve
this in the gmail app (don't want to use the browser if i have an native app)
i'll start writing now - how can i contact google?
You can help yourself by replying to the email. You can then c&p from the quote. After copying you discard the reply.
It's a bad hack, I know. But IMHO it's the best way until Google fixes this.
tried it now
not working for me
You're right. :-( Doesn't work any more for me, too. I think it once worked.
to whom and where can i write about it
so it could be fixed and the sooner the better
should be copy\paste avalible in all apps and between all apps
like iphone has
thought i was the only one with this problem

You sure about that, buddy?
As I recall, Windows Mobile 5 had copy/paste support, and (since it was done using a stylus) it was quite accurate and usable. WM5, for record, was released in May of 2005 - Android wasn't released to the public until the Fall of 2007.
My bad but not to many window mobile users knew about it. compare to android that have copy and paste was on web browser and apps since 2008 with the first google phone Google g1.
They just added Copy and paste on gmail with android 2.2 os in Late may for nexus one users, before porting 2.2 os to every other phones.
Anyway i post this just because i saw a lot of users in Android Central forums and Droidforums was asking for this.

Every WM user should have known it, as it was included in the set-up/tutorial that appeared the first time you ran the device. It walked you through the steps of long-tapping an item, selecting copy, long-tapping another location, and selecting paste.
Let's not forget that PalmOS had a similar implementation at about the same time as well.
And while it took Apple a while to come to the copy/paste party, I think they have one of the cleaner methods for doing so. This could be why Gingerbread takes some unofficial cues from the iOS way of selecting text.
Don't get me wrong, I much prefer Android.... but the "facts" that you are stating are nothing but ignorant and even incorrect.
Im sorry but window mobile sucks, i just dont like it! It my opinion but back to android topics.
your right it was window mobile first then android. But android users did hype it up more. That why apple put that feature on Iphone3gs in 2009.

yeah android hyped it up - but in a bad way: even with 2.3 google isn't able to get it streamlined in order to have the same conpy&paste concept system wide.
so it doesn't help if android had it earlier than iPhone but needs >2 years to get it right, while even windows mobile had a unified approach (touch&hold) and iOS does too...

Reading Maths Word Document?

Hello,
Sorry if I put this question at the wrong place :|
I am a mathematician and I am looking for an app that can read mathematical symbols on Android? I have tried QuickOffice and DocToGo and both of them failed to display those symbols I created in Office 2007/2010. Can you please suggest me which app I should use.
Thank you
What you are trying to read, are equations done in Office 2007/2010, am I right?
Yes. Do you have any tips? My equations all disappeared
Sorry, can't help you there. I haven't check docs with equations. You could try to contact Documents to Go or QuickOffice developers, to see if they plan to release an update that supports this functionality.
If you want to read documents, and not edit them, you can always make a pdf, and read it on your android device

[Q] Microsoft Word? View & Edit?

Hi all,
I am looking at purchasing either a netbook, or this Acer Iconia Tablet. One reason I am buying either of these is for viewing and editing/creating word documents. Obviously this can be done on a netbook, but can this similarly be done using this/any android tablet?
I have read about Documents to Go app however not fully aware of the functionalities etc (are you able to create new documents?). If yes, is the editing and viewing of the documents on the app/tablet good, i.e. easy? (with a USB keyboard)?
I'm not interested in the full editing found in desktop PC's or anything, just the basic write, read, edit, create.
Thanks for your time, appreciate all input.

I use Documents to Go on my Iconia, very pleased with it. Thus far, I haven't found anything of substance that I can't do. I have a Bluetooth keyboard, but rarely use it.
I got docs to go and it has been able to do everything I need so far. I have only edited my resume on it, but it has worked perfectly. I also set up my printer to use with my tablet.
Ok thank you very much for your fast responses! Are you able to create a new document? or are you only able to edit other documents already on the device?

Docs to go will work with your google docs, but the google docs app is pretty craptastic itself.
How about a decent software keyboard? One that has 5 rows for a change for those damn numbers.
All keyboards I've seen are simply mobile ones scaled up. They just won't do.

Been using Tswipe-Pro. It's free (with a minor nag once in blue moon) customizable (size, type, color) with T9 up top along with number keys and cursor keys as well.
I also concur on the Google Docs app. For viewing, everything else is better. But you can do edits in GDocs, I suppose. I think I missed the big 50% off sale for Docs to Go too--the free app included is good enough for referrence checks for me.

1+ Been using this for about a week!
Both look awesome!
Nothing compares to MS Word or even OpenOffice.
All the Android office apps have major features missing and problems displaying certain things correctly.
For casual use it's ok, but if this is a major part of your work then I'm afraid an Android tablet wont do it for you.
I have used Docs to go and Quick Office HD. Quick Office HD works better and is the only one I have found that show headers and footers in word docs. Also it works with Dropbox so I sync my work docs and can see and edit them if need be.

I beg to differ.
Open office, office 2010 and 2007 just don't display right on earlier versions and unfortunately many institutions don't bother updating since a plug-in is enough for docx or pptx.
I've found open office to misalign lines in pptx over and over again.
Since things don't shine on PCs either and you always have to worry a little about the target device, I thing a tablet is perfect for content creation.
You can always set the paragraphs straight and change styles at home in 2 minutes.
