Ok simple and possible stupid question...
All yesterday my phone was displaying the E icon next to my antenna showing that there was the possiblity of connecting to the Edge network... Now I happen to work in a area where 3G is not supported but I live in one where its spotty.
I went home last night and while fooling with the phone I noticed the U icon instead of the E... Note I'm NOT using the MEdia connection either, I know this is just simply stating that 3G is currenty avilable where I am.
Now I'm back at work today and the U icon is still there, so I got to test it and when I connect it connects with a mini E above the antenna bars.... So why does my major network icon never change showing me whats avilable?
I installed the HTC Kaiser Dialer + 3G-Batt Icons for my vp3G rom, so I dont know if maybe thats causing it?
I just signed up for media maxx today so I'll test my media connection when I get home to see if it shows up with a 3G...
It doesn't show you what's available. It shows you how you connected, if you are connected.
Um, no it shows whats avilable because this is showing up when my phone is not connected to the MEdia Net service.
Right from the manual.
The LARGE U an E icons are the ones I'm talking about...
Either way I removed the HTC Kaiser Dialer + 3G-Batt Icons program, and it went back to a E icon
so I think it had something to do with that.
The manual is wrong. I am in a 3.5G area, and my connection icon routinely changes from E to U, even while using it.
You're trying to solve something that is not only not solvable, but is also not a big deal anyway.
Got my blackstone today. Network unlocked and my step back into the world of windows mobile.
I stuck an O2 payandgo simcard in and connected the WIFI.
I then started playing, after a bit thought lets see what the 3g data speed is like found the o2 settings and set the data connection slider to on.
I moved out of range of the wireless and went on a couple of websites speed was good and useable for facebook etc.
However one massive problem on reconnecting to the wifi I left the data connection open as you would I mean it's on all the time right.
All of the traffic from the following web browsing nailed my £10 down to 17p.
It would not use the wifi saying in google maps "an internet connection is required" if I turn off the 3G data connection it connects through the wireless, turn it back on and it *****es and moans at me.
WTF I said rather loudly, so a data connection over 3G is a higher priority than my 20Mb cable line here over wireless.
The web stuff is good although opera is a bit irratating at times, we need skyfire for this beasty.
I love the screen and the keyboard works well. The touchflo is lagging quite a lot and the screens can take a bit of thinking before they close.
Not sure if I need to upgrade the firmware. 1.14.405.3 (222373) WWE.
I am really hacked off as now I have to put another £10 on the phone to test properly within my 14 days. Or just straight up send it back and get an X1 or an Omnia. Help me out guys.
Works fine for me, wifi prioritised over 3g whenever it's connected. However, some apps only select which connection to use when they're started, can't remember if this applies to googlemaps. Try restarting it and see if it works over wifi.
Useful tip if you want to control what uses 3g: goto control pannel/buttons, and set the end key to disconnect 3g. Then you have a quick shortcut to turn it off, and you can see at a glance in the status bar if it has reconnected (the H above the signal strength). It's also useful if you set the X button to close apps rather than minimise, otherwise you might still be using an app that thinks it's on 3G even when you come back into range of wifi.
Thanks for the reply arfster. What you say makes perfect sense, I have used the Tweak HD to change the close on x and set the end button as a 3g off switch. Will put another £10 on and see how it goes
With Tweak HD you can easily make the performance of the TF3D alot better. Made the device much better workable for me.
I have changed some settings and it has improved, I'm going to have a proper play with it when it's charged and some stuff has finished copying to it Overall I am very pleased with the hardware (camera excluded but I knew that), it makes one of the guys Iphone's look weak and feeble! the 8gb card in the box was a bonus as well
It's just some bits with the software that are bugging me, after looking around the forum a bit more it would seem that I have a World Wide English rom, need to know if I can upgrade to a euro rom of a later version. I'll keep updating this thread I think with my impressions as I go along, probably from the device most of the time to get used to the keyboard. Good times software can be fixed hardware can't.
There is an app called nodata which allows you to turn on and off GPRS data connection, You can simply toggle data connection off when you don't want to use your PAYG credit, no matter what apps are requesting for data.
BTW, there are tweaks to speed up your Touch HD device including Opera.
Does anyone know why my "G" icon is sometimes greyed?I mean, no problem it is a G, but why is it on gray background?
I don't see in the user manual anything like that..can it be because of my ROM?
In order to try to save a little battery and because i don't use data connections (wifi only), I set GSM only and deactivated HSDPA, does it have to do with it? Thanks
P.S. i've looked around for some nicer top-bar icons like some people have, but no success:any advice?link?
I'm not completely sure what icon you mean, but I think it is the icon that indicates that a GPRS connection is available (not connected).
To connect to the internet you can have different mobile wireless connections: GPRS (with a G-icon), EDGE (with an E-icon), 3G (with a 3G-icon) and HSDPA (with an H-icon). GPRS being the slowest, HSDPA the fastest, EDGE is not available in all country's and not every connection is available everywhere.

This is out of question, 3G is disabled with NoData.cab and HD Tweak.Furthermore, the name of my gsm operator changes when not in 3G.
@whizz: Thanks for your clear explanation, but as a matter of fact i have 2 "G" icons available (not at the same time), one is the white "square G" on black background (let's call it default, present in the manual) and another one wich is a normal G on grey background..curious..I'm sorry!I wish I could post a screenshot!
EDIT: Here's my guess, I am on a GPRS network but using only GSM..could it be?
Sualc, I can't answer your question but I have wondered the same myself. I also see the greyed out icons sometimes. I haven't bothered researching it becasue it doesn't seem to be a big deal but I would like to know as well.

Thank you for witnessing the same , I was afraid people could think I had hallucinations.Yeah you're right, compared to dozens of other REAL bugs this subject is really not important, just to know...By the way..I just left my bedroom and went down the stairs and now I've got the standard icon!!Tricky, hum?
Greyed out icons mean that type of connection is available, but not in use. It's white when in use.

Implausible - I have my internet connection APN deliberately mis-set to prevent any data connections at all. I still get both normal and greyed out icons from time to time.
Grey G icon means bad or no gprs signal I think. I have somewhere read about it.
Thanks, anyway there is already a signal strenght indicator near the G..but if you read it somewhere no reason to doubt.
I can confirm I get that grey G icon sometimes... it might be a rendering screen bug too....
i get a E for edge and a g for 3g
It may mean a bad signal but the device polls so infrequently as to make it pointless.
Behavior just observed.....
1 - I had an H (HSDPA) with a grey background.
2 - I connect to the internet and get an H with a white background.
3 - I disconnect from the internet to try and a grey background but it is still white.
4 - I walk over to the elevator (bad signal) to try and get a grey background
5 - The data icon goes from H with white background to G with white background
Conclusion ..... non informative and quite meaningless
I am 90% sure that the grey background means bad signal... When it shows in my device, it happens always in areas that reception is poor.
Not unique to the TD2. I get the same from time to time on my Touch HD. Have mildly wondered but never bothered to research.

It happens to me too, but not very often. It´s not about not being connected, because the white icon is there when there´s no connection.
The GPRS signal being too weak seems like a good explanation to me.

I'm afraid the G icon we're talking about is not among the ones lsted there..so until something "official" comes out could we say that "G greyed icon" = "GPRS band selected but not availabe "?

the G is there, the 2nd reply attached with the picture explains
G(dark color) = GPRS available
G(grey color) = GPRS unavailable.
When you hold down the search sensor button you get in-app-wifi toggle, It's really hot, because if your online and you decide to turn on your wifi, no more going to home screen to use your power widget, you just hold down that button and it automatically toggles your wifi. Every day I'm learning something new about this beautiful phone. Also, they have fixed the issue with the 3D gallery, all the pictures load lighting quick and at the same time, wifi seems to be enhanced, and phone reception to, I was on the train earlier and I went into a tunnel and I was able to talk until I reached the station, which is a bit of a way underground. I'm using the prioritizer app, and I used to get reception like that on my G1 when I used it, people didn't believe me until I got a phone call in the subway one day, I heard a kid say who gets phone calls in the subway, lol, and whenever I pass one of those grates that lead to outside, text messages come through sometimes. Mine is set to always use voice search. Anyone know who to change this?
I use QuickDesk Beta with a Power Control Widget as well as some other nifty shortcuts. If you download it from the market, the next time long press search there will be and option for the QuickDesk.
If you want to change yours going to search you have to go to settings>application>search(or the program being opened) and undo the defaults for that program.
Is that a stock option, on-app wifi? Or is it a piece of a wifi toggle app, why don't i have it.
You actually need an app to do that, try search in the market 'In App Wifi Toogle'
it's by Oliver Pearmain
A few ROMs have this in as standard (it's pretty useful) but it's not a FroYo thing. It's not in the CM ROMs and possibly won't be.
Just downloaded the in-app wifi toggle from the market. What an extremely handy app!!!
(need to toggle 3g - Wifi a lot since the froyo radio...3g reception in house has worsened quite a bit)
Thanks for the info!
My vote goes to QuickDesk Pro + Power widget as well... much more useful IMHO

Best thing to use on the search long press is Quick Settings.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.bwx.bequick
You can customize which settings appear on that list, it's awesome. I use it to toggle wifi, sound, brightness (including an auto-brightness toggle), auto-rotate, and a few more.
Play with the settings and configure it to exactly what you want and then every setting is one click away wherever you are.
A little help

Go into application setting, then manage applications, scroll until you find voice search, click on it and there should be a option to clear defaults, clear it. next time you use this function you'll be prompted to choose default action, just don't check the box and the prompt will always come up.

You can change your network type for improved reception, go to phone press *#*#4636#*#* and wait for the hidden testing area. Click on phone information, scroll down until you see your set network. Try them all to see which one gives you the best reception. Once you choose one it will reset your network so let it do its thing, your bars and 3G icon should reappear.

Er, not really...it may improve network selection, but it won't improve signal.
WCDMA preferred - Use 3G but when signal is weak prefer 3G over GSM.
GSM only - obvious.
WCDMA only - Use only 3G, has no signal then when only GSM present.
GSM auto PRL - Use 3G but when signal is weak, prefer GSM over 3G
All the CDMA/EvDO stuff does apply to our phones...its the same stuff for, but for those networks and GSM/CDMA auto is for combination phones... (ie - "world" phones from Verizon, etc)
Easiest way to improve Nexus One reception - hold it in your left hand.

Google with the FRF91 update. Why do you think updates kept coming out so quickly. Google has a ear to the ground, they put the Nexus out there as a test of Android OS, and they want feedback to improve it. It's all about feedback and improvement.
Hi everyone,
I have an omnia 7 on contract with Optus here in Australia. I have had it for a few days now and I've found the data connection to be very patchy, even though I have full reception where I live.
I have noticed the connection icon switching between 3G and 3G+ pretty much constantly when I'm using it.
This is basically what is happening as I try it at the moment:
- Icon says 3G.
- Tried to load the Optus website and the icon changed to 3G+ and the progress bar is just hanging there, wont go any further.
- Icon has changed back to 3G, still hanging.
- Try to load again, now it has changed to 3G+ and the site loaded.
- Icon has changed back to 3G.
- Clicked a link on the website and the icon changed to 3G+, page loaded fine.
- Icon changed back to 3G.
- Tried to load the facebook app, "Unable to connect to Facebook. Please try again later.
- Trying to load optuszoo.com.au again, icon says 3G.. just hanging there again.
- Icon has changed to 3G+, still hanging.
- Icon has changed to 3G, still hanging.
Could this be a fault with my phone? I'm in an area of strong reception, it shouldn't have a problem getting a steady 3G+ connection (I used to have a HTC Diamond which always had a strong HSDPA signal). I can only guess that every time it switches from 3G to 3G+ it loses the connection, which stops things from loading & syncing. Is there anything I can try here before I take it back to the store? I do not have the new firmware, and don't particularly want to try messing with it if I have to return it.
Every Omnia 7 has this problem (as far as I'm aware). It's a connectivity bug with Windows Phone, hopefully it will get sorted in the coming update.

I've got the same phone and on the same carrier and I can't say I have experienced these problems. I've had my phone since october last year and its been working flawlessly when there's a good signal.
When it switches between 3G and 3G+(H), it usually just means the download speed is varying between those 2 standards (i think 3G = about 3Mbits/s, and 3G+/H is about 7Mbits/s).
Only thing I can suggest is turn off your phone, make sure your sim is inserted properly as well as battery, and turn it back on.
If you were on a different carrier with your old HTC, it might be Optus' coverage.

I was on Optus previously, I dropped into the optus store yesterday and they had me on the phone with support. We tried my sim in a different phone and determined it's my handset that is the problem. As the poster above you mentioned, it's probably a firmware issue... but I'm not going to risk waiting for the new firmware to come out because I only have another week to be able to get a replacement.
Had such issues but after I changed my Provider my 3G+ signal ist stable.
Hour handset is being 'elevated' to HSDPA when your using your connection.
When its idle, it will drop back to 'standard'
My handset does this, but i am not getting the data issues your experiencing.
In addition, both my old HTC handsets used to do this, tho the icon actually showed [H] for HSDPA (Windows Mobile 6.1 and 6.5)
Hard reset your Omnia And/Or send it off for repair/replace
(I am with Optus too)
I'm having the same problem.
I've got a Samsung Galaxy s on Optus.
Constantly changes from 3G to HSDPA, looses connection every time, very hard to use apps that use the Internet.
Seem's to be an optus problem as this is happening with different types of handsets.
Maybe an option where you can select 3G or HSDPA only is needed, they have a GPRS or 3G only option so i don't see why they cant have this aswell.

Yep I ended up taking it back and getting a replacement, but the replacement has the same problem... so it's either software related or network related.
I can confirm this issue too.
It's REALLY annoying.
Is there any temporary fix? I hate this device for the most part, but I love WP7.
I have less problems when I have the phone's sync set to hourly, then it happens maybe once a month that I can't connect with data.
When I had de sync set to manual I almost daily had to reset the phone to get the data connection back, now its on hourly sync again and no problems in the past week..

I have the exact same issue with my HTC Mozart. The signal constantly keeps changing between 3G and HSDPA when I'm in an area that has stable strong reception.
This causes the same DNS issues as stated in IE in which websites fail to load until you refresh them a number of times.
To me it appears that its an issue with IE and the way WP7 calculates and handles the signal. Can anyone confirm if Microsoft have confirmed that there are issues with IE and the signal and when this will be fixed?
I don't know if in my case it's related to the same problem, but on my operator's network it's mostly E and 3G.
After a few times of checking my email, getting the People Hub updated or surfing once in a while, I don't get a connection anymore, except when connecting via wifi.
This is a very annoying problem and the only way to get it back is turning the device off and on daily basis, sometimes even a few times a day D:
I have the same issue ever since I updated the firmware. At first I thought that it is broken internally but it seems to be a universal problem.
Firmware: 2424.11.2.3
Radio: 2424.11.2.2
bootloader:5.2.1.4
Does anybody want to escalate this issue to MS and Samsung? (I understand that several countries are reporting this)
Same problem - HTC One X on Optus.
My phone seems to spend most of its time deciding whether to use 3G or HSDPA, during which time my webpage downloads stop, I can't connect to facebook ("Connection lost - tap to retry"), I can't search Google, etc. etc.
I wouldn't mind if it got on with the job in the meantime, but while it's flicking backwards & forwards between networks I can't seem to get any data down (or up).
Really, really, really annoying. I didn't notice it on Telstra, but I had a different phone (HTC Desire). From the looks of this thread though it's network-related, not phone-related.
Does anybody have problem while calling someone, and when line establishes, there is only silence and dropped call. I had that problem, and I solved it by forcing phone to use only 3G. To do this, go to Diagnosis, and enter *#2263#, then if you want only 3G enter ''WCDMA Band Preference'' - ''WDCMA All'', or for EDGE ''GSM Band Preference'' - ''GSM All''. Automatic speaks for itself. I use 3G all the time, and no more dropped calls. Maybe this could help with 3G -> 3G+ shifting. Only downside is that when there is no 3G signal, you wont get signal at all.

Really, really, really annoying. I didn't notice it on Telstra, but I had a different phone (HTC Desire). From the looks of this thread though it's network-related, not phone-related.
