Having had my XDA 2 now for a few weeks, and having finally worked out most of the kinks of the really inadequate bluetooth stack (by installing the widcomm stack) I am now moved to address my other annoyances: the very feature poor phone software.
I expected a very configurable phone, but was very disappointed with the microsoft dailer. The short list of features I find missing are:
No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact. This could be very usefully, as you would know who is phoning without checking the screen.
No software to keep track of your calls or GPRS allowance. Even my old nokia from 3 years ago could do that.
No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset. I know you can do it the other way around, why not this way too?
Very little status information on the dailer screen. Why is this, when most cell phone screens look like the status display on a jet?
Anyways, there is alot more, and people may want to add their annoyances. Im really wondering if there is any software that can replace the microsoft Dailer (like Pocketinformant replaces the pocket outlook).
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Took me a minute to know what you're talking about.
No, I hate the built-in dialer on the Pocket PC.
The author of mobidial (http://www.mobidial.com) told me there will be an XDA II version.. hopefully soon.

hey,
just a few comments....
re: No separate ring tones can be assigned to each contact
- i beleive the o2 xda site has free software for download; one of which is called powercontacts. i believe it allows you to assign a ringtone to each contact. i tried it when i still had the xda1...never got it to work. so, i downloaded a trial version of ringtonex; it works like a charm and i'm able to assign individual ringtones to any contact i want. i immediately bought the software, i think it was for around 9usd. now that i'm using the xda2; the software still works great. for ringtones what i did was record the voice of my friends, officemates, my wife, and used those wav files for ringtones corresponding to their contacts. it also works in tandem with the photocontacts app in the xda2
re: No way to transfer a call from the handset to a headset
-the xda2 has bluetooth and i use it together with the bt200 headset. incoming and outgoing calls are automatically transferred to the headset.
2 cents worth.
cheers mate

Transferring from phone to headset is a headset dependent thing. My HBH-65 allows me to transfer to phone and back to headset, but my Jabra wouldn't have.
Thx for the great pointers. I am definitely getting the RingtoneX app, and mobidail or something similar, when it comes out.
I just wish that developers would design more for handed use, not using a stylus, especially as bluetooth voicedailing does not work.
About transferring to a headset, I mean after you pick up a call with the XDA, transferring the call to a headset should be possible, but has not worked for me yet.
Another minor peeve, why is the sms option not on the dialler, but on the menu bar, and why is speaker phone also not on the front, but you have to press a key for it. There still needs to be alot of improvement. Hopefully independent programmers will kick in and fix all these deficiencies. It does make you wonder if the developers actually use their own devices or not...

i think it's because that most cell phones screens is their version of the today screen
i most surdenly would not wish such a confusing cluttet messy interface on my worst enemy
(yeah of cause not all cellphones are all that bad some many are)
I dont know. At least they should have the battery status on the screen, and the network logo would not be ammis either (currently its difficult to know when you have no reception, or just no reception)
Alot of the stuff thats currently in the task bar could also be bigger icons on the dailer, and it would also make it look less plain and just incomplete, as if its been thrown together at the last minute.
Surur
well not sure if it's much help but if you install some bar like advanced wisbar on your pda you'll have batt status in the bar both in today and the dialer
suppose this is a pre customised vs. free 3. party customising
some people like to set up their device with personal customising and some people want the place they buy it to handle that
in that way i suppose xda and other such devices are more like computers then std phones are
of cause if one get a xda with all the stuff in the preloaded provider rom they get more of that stuff you want
of cause thats not saying that they get enough
Ive been a user of Icbar for a long time, but as notifications is so important on a PPCPE device, and its not supported, I am not able to use it anymore. This is unfortuanate, as I enjoyed knowing what my battary status is all the time.

If you want to use your finger to dial contacts try Fingerclix by imaginet software. I used it on my Samsung I700 and now my I-Mate and it works just fine.

This is brilliant. It would be even better if it could use the phone key insteadof loosing my contacts button. Any idea how to do htis.
Thx

Once my Bluetooth Headset is connected to my Prophet, all my notification sounds come through my Bluetooth Headset instead of the phone speaker.
The sound for normal incoming call works as it should though (through the speaker).
The only way i've found how to solve this problem, is to uncheck the "Wireless Stereo" option under:
Settings > Connections > Bluetooth > i.Tech Clip R35 > Partnership Settings
And then when I want to listen to music through the Windows Media Player, I have to do the opposit.
So, my two questions...
1. Is there a way to map notification sounds to always use the phone's speaker? (or)
2. Is there a small shortcut / Today-plugin that can switch "Wireless Stereo" on/off in one click?
Cheers!
Eric
Yes there is, i use a software called BTAudioToggle, you can place a shortcur to a launchbar in the today plugin, it works fine for me...

Thanks Hybrid, unfortunatly this was a bit wrong...
It seems that this program routed the sounds to the Bluetooth Headset if I wouldn't have "Wireless Stereo".
Hence; it had its functionality when I turned off "Wireless Stereo".
The solution was in the right direction though, but not really right...
BIG note though: It messed up the sound on my normal "Wireless Stereo" mode. So the sound now has a distortion as well.
Ehm but i remember there a software which did the same like btaudio with stereo headsets, but this one costs money. You just have to google, cause i dont remember the name

I found one called BlueMusic: http://www.teksoftbluemusic.com
Could that be the one you're refering to?
BlueMusic unfortunatly got about 99 functions that are more or less useless, packaged in a big memory overhead with nice graphics.
I just wanted the simple on/off switch...
ADD:
I'm running WM6, that's probably why most of BlueMusic's feature are superfluous.
My father got an Aus P535; when he uses the bluetooth headset, an icon is displayed on top, near "start": by clicking that icon, it is possible to redirect or not notification sounds to the headset... I didn't try that on the prophet, but I hope this can help you. bye
@overone: Hang in there...I'm trying to create a solution for one-click wireless stereo on/off..Will let you know as soon as I'm done...
Guys, been trying out a few things on mine AMEO qith BT8010's, it would appear that two reg entries are modified when turning on/off wireless audio.
I have attahced two reg export files bton.txt for audio on and btoff.txt for audio off.
if you look at lines 23 and 61 these are the values the executable will need to toggle. I dont have enough knowledge to code it up but if you know how to by all means give it a try.

Oki.
I just ment that I don't know how to help you, since I don't write/read that lingo/api's...
I found an open .NET class in C# that could query the Bluetooth interface.
Unfortunatly, it only seem to have a "getService" and not a "setService".
I am very interested in this solution for the hermes. I linked this thread to the hermes forum.
Thanks for looking into this.

With all the great working being done here on iPhone-inspired applications, is anyone developing a simple app to let Smartphones and PPC phones display a full screen image (drawn from the contact database image) for incoming and outgoing calls and caller ID?

This is a thing that's been talked about for years. MS makes software for PPC's with at least resolutions like 240x240, 240x320 etc. But it just doensn't understand that we want to have a full screen caller ID
There are some solutions, but none of them are really small when it comes to memory consumption, or bloatware
Have a look at PhotoContacts and Inesoft Address Book . The last one works the best for me

Yeah, I've looked at those, and others. In fact, IAStyle (I think that was the one) has royally screwed up my incoming caller screen now so I get lots of misaligned graphics and random pixels during the incoming caller / caller ID display.
Someone should be able to make a simple caller ID display that uses the graphics already stored with the contacts in WM5/6 and displays the graphic full screen. It would be wonderful if the display used XML to control the layout so it was easy to redesign the layout as well.
Dreaming away...

Have you tried AC's slide to unlock, he has this feature caller ID working. Only problem for me, that is, it is not compatible with AE button plus, the problem being, I can't answer calls. But I have tried it without AE button plus installed on my Wizard and it works great, with a minor hiccup that is, you can only get full resolution Full screen photos if you use photoCM to assign your contacts pictures..
try it...
I'm on a smartphone so slide2unlock isn't going to do much for me I suspect.
Also, there's no reason not to use the contact databse's pics is there?

I have installed it and it works VERY well. I was really surprised that as soon as I installed the CAB file I was able to say "Play..." then any artist or album in my music library - right out of the box. Voice recognition was incredibly accurate with no setup required (I.E. "Play - A Tribe Called Quest" consistently no probs )
HOWEVER I have actually uninstalled it recently as I was watching the task manager and noticing that the 'VoiceCommand.exe' process was consistently jumping between 1% and 12% with no action from me whatsoever. This is not much and might be tolerable for some people but for me it is an added drag!
this program has some bugs
it will delay the sip and it will mess up the ringtone
however you could change the regisitry to fix it
if you don't need it , better dont install it

for the ringtone bit i dont know hoe to fix the registry
for sip issue u can check out the wikipedia here. if you are not an advance user defintely not risk to edit your registry
I tried it, but, maybe coincidence, maybe not, I found my battery ran down quite quickly. This happened over 3 days, so i uninstalled it, and it has gone back to normal battery time.
Maybe it is something to do with what SamasQ mentions above. Maybe its just my phone.
Did the incoming calls announcement work as well?
For me it was the only thing that didn't work.
Voice dial, running programs, play music, announcing new messages and calendar events - all worked. But incoming caller names did not.
On my old HTC TyTN II all of the above worked.
So I'm wondering, was it just me or don't the incoming caller announcement work on X1?
Draqula, same here, all worked but incoming call announcements.
try going to some website (win-mo experts or something and look for bengaliath, he did some extensive post on this program. I haven't had time to look yet, but its worth a shot.)
BTW, which ROM you using, (UK international?)

I read the bengalih guide. It was originally posted here at xda forums and helped me a lot when setting up VoiceCommand on the HTC TyTN II.
Now it's available here: http://www.winmo-experts.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=2&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a
Unfortunately, there was no helpful info for me there.
I found and checked the following registry key...
Incoming Announcements are the function of the voicecmd.exe and the following registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\TTSAnnounce
"Script" = "as5p"
"Category" = "VoiceCommand1"
"Sound" = "Application Data\Volatile\TTSCallerID.wav"
... and found that on my X1 there was an extra slash in the location of the wav, but fixing it didn't help.
Let me know if you find any new info.
I have successfully ported quite a bit of drivers from x1 and blackstone to raphael.. please try the blackstone wavedev.dll (it must be cooked into rom) - on raphael this updated driver fixes voice command announce problem
Voice Command 1.6 also disconnects the bluetooth headset after you give a voice command. You have to re-establish the bluetooth connection again each time.
I've already removed the Voice Command because of this.
Other than this problem, it works very well in the X1.
The small print below the sales pitch for voice commander states "Incoming caller ID announcements will be spoken via the phone speaker on Sony Ericsson Xperia X1s with a Windows Mobile build prior to 15097.3.0.0. "
Any ideas how to find the build number?

I/ve tried in all combination, but coice command don't work with the callar id function. I purcased it, but now refund, don't work!
voice command 1.6 works fine on my X1 too except call announcement. I have tried all the recommended patches, but when I replace the files nothing happens or i get some crashes.
Has anyone tried this allready with success?
many thanks

I have read all these posts and see that most poeple have a problem with the voice caller ID being read out....
I too installed (though a previous version) v1.5 and everything works fine except for caller ID voice read out...
Another thing i found is that it would read email subject headings from my 2nd email account but not from my first email account....might just be coincidence...
Bit concerned now that I read about the 1%-12% fluctuations when you arent even using it....hmmm
Same problem, no caller ID name readout
Same problem, the callerID is not read out.
What version are you guys running of MS Voice Command? There are multiple versions of 1.6.xxxxxx.
I am trying to use it with my BT headset. That is speaking the name into my bt headset after pressing the button on it. Does that work or do I always have to use my phone for speaking my commands?
EDIT: never mind. I got it to work. By restarting the phone (so typical of Windows)
When i installed Voice Command on my Xperia... it errored out at the end of installation, but completed regardless. It is working perfectly in every aspect except announcing incoming calls. It is great when it announces messaes and e-mails so that i know whats coming in and from who...
It did announce an incoming call once or twice... but out of the blue.

Interesting. For me too, that's the only problem. Incoming announcements.
Somebody mentioned it disconnects BT HF and you have to reconnect manually - not true for my Jabra BT8040, it stays connected or automatically reconnects, anyway it works.
Especially useful when driving and getting new messages and next appointments announced by BT HF.
just a question that links indirectly to this thread:
is there a way to remap the button for voice command? somehow I wanted to invoke the voice command app via the earphones' button SE X1 has. so I don't have to grab my phone inside its pouch and unlock it and press either the 2 buttons I mapped em with.
I was wondering if this watch is compatible with xperia??
i wanna buy this watch but if it doesnt work with it it will be useless en it will do nothing different than a normal watch
has someone tested it, seen it or read it
Not compatible directly, but there are programs that allow it to work.

Regarding watches, as far as I know, none of them works "as is" with WinMo
You need btwatch or any other BT app, but I can tell you they work a treat, even better than the stock Sony Ericsson stack
Pairing the MBW-100 with a SE phone givesyou very basic functionality, but btwatch (or else) add LOTS of new functions to the watch

I don't have an MBW-100, but a BT bracelet with LCD screen.
I had problems with btwatch, but the SmartWatchM worked .. it vibrates but the caller name doesn't show up on screen etc. I also tried JETware software and after configuring I could get my bracelet to vibrate and show the last name of the caller.. but that's all, no sms notification/reading or anything. I wish to find a software that might have support for this bracelet.
So I'm more than interested to know what other software there is?
Thanks.
