I'm just wondering why my hotmail email account uses my data connection even though I have an active wifi connection. My gmail and yahoo connects to the wifi no problem but when I do 'send/receive' with my hotmail, it always uses the data connection. Anything to change this setting? Thanks.
We are together in this I guess
Good question! I was wondering why it happens too... I went through the registry, I made a hard reset (Was thinking the problem due the fact I imported mails using a backup problem)... nothing... there is no way to solve it! I think there is someproblem in messenger by itself and the solution might be installing another version?... Any idea anyone
I have this problem too, i go into communications, then disable cellular radio, and activate WIFI, then my hotmail updates over wifi, Strange, some kind of fix for this would be good.
Does anyone know if there is a fix?
In the email account settings try changing connection to "The Internet" instead of the default one (mine said "T-Mobile Internet").
This way email will go via WIFI if available, otherwise via 3G/GPRS... as it should
The problem here, and why it's set to default to HSDPA for email, is the outgoing SMTP server. Orange in particular block the use of any SMTP server other than their own, but of course their smtp won't work when you're connected via wifi. Thus on mine I set it to use Orange Internet for everything (idiotically it wasn't defaulting to that, so no outgoing email when on wifi).
Ideally this really needs different smtp settings when you're on wifi - anyone know a way?

I'm no expert, so put me right if I'm being dumb here:
I'm with Orange (UK) and use my own email account (incoming POP3 and sending via SMTP).
I seem to be able to both send and receive mail quite happily via HSDPA even though it's not Orange email. Am I missing something ?

Hrrrm, maybe just a yahoo email thing then. I can't use their smtp on orange HSDPA.

If it's of interest, the email through my own server requires the mail client to log in for both sending and receiving, and the word SMTP doesn't appear in the server name. Perhaps this helps Orange to "miss" it ?

I have the same problem, but a lot worse. My HD doesn't use my wifi for anything, unless I deactivate my data connection. It's really annoying, especially since I previously had a Diamond, and that worked perfectly!
Any tips would be VERY much appreciated!

Same here. I thought it was just opera that wouldn't use wifi, but its everything. All my apps seem to use my data connection rather than wifi.
Sorry to dig up an old thread, and I don't know if the solution is elsewhere (I've been searching for hours), but I think I've sorted hotmail to connect using wifi here:
http://www.dugaldwilson.com/dugald/archive/2009/02/17/54.aspx
Another solution would be to use 'No data' app and toogle off 'internet' & 'wap' so data connection is not available so phone can only use wifi. If at some point you want to re-use data connection, just toggle them on again.

if anyone have a clue please save me
Did you set up the incoming/outgoing servers manually?
I'm not sure if it's the case but I registered at izymail.com and then used the izymail servers and it works a charm.
How about you try that?
E-Mail issue to be solved!
What providers (GSM and mail) do you use?
I do have the same problem and several others posted exactly this issue in several other threads.
This definitely is a problem which hasn't been solved.
Isn't there a charming developer out there who knows how to solve this
By the way, recommending to change the e-mail provider does not really help and obviously not solve the issue!
Did you choose a connection in Email setup? My Dual asks me which connection (internet, business, vpn etc.) to use. It's in the window for smtp server under advanced options. There you can select the correct setting. Maybe you have the wrong in there.
Cheers, Dennis
Maybe there's a proxy set in your 3g connection. I have vodafone and is automatically setups a proxy, which causes email and live messenger problems. Just disabling the proxy in connection settings worked for me.
No Proxy
I figured something strange out. If I disconnect the 3G connection in the Comm manager, then press send/receive the device once connects with the e-mail server and even downloads the headers. As soon as I want to download an e-mail I get the same message again: "Could not connect to server, check your inbox account login-information"!
That drives me insane! If I disconnect again from 3G and then press send/receive it works again - JUST ONCE.
It's the same for POP or IMAP.
Would be nice if somebody could help out.
Thanks in adavance
I have had exactly the same problem since I installed the Mary 6 ROM on my touch dual and have the problem with two different email accounts so It's definitely not an issue with those settings.
When you install the new ROM it auto detects your network (I'm on T- mobile UK) and sets up all of the connections automatically so I'm guess the problem lies there.
Does anyone know where I can verify that these settings are correct?

I had the same problem on t-mobile uk after flashing the new official 6.1 rom.
I solved it by disabling the proxy server START-SETTINGS-CONNECTIONS-CONNECTIONS-MANAGE EXISTING CONNECTIONS-PROXY SETTINGS. Internet access still works I also did a hard reset after flashing the rom, but that may not be relevant.
Hi there,
I have set up my POP3 email account on my HD (though have set to leave messages on server) and it works fine on Wifi (checks, downloads, sends, etc). However when I'm not on Wifi and I'm on TMobile data (HSDPA, 3G, GPRS, etc), I get an error when I try send and receive. It comes up with "error synchronising" and a popup appears at the top saying...
"Cannot connect with current connection settings. To change your connection settings, tap settings." If I go into settings, I get the list of connections, but can't see anything in there that needs changing. I'm on T-Mobile in the UK, and it lists "T-Mobile Internet" and "My Work Network". If I go into the T-Mobile Internet settings everything seems fine in there. And it all works when I go into the web browser, or Youtube app, etc.
Its almost as if the mail app doesn't have access to the data connection unless its over Wifi. Is there something I'm missing, or an area where you can tell it when to use the data connection? I've even tried manually enabling the data connection through the comm manager (rather than it starting when an app needs it), then switching to mail and clicking send/receive - still the same error.
Thanks,
Dave
Can anyone help me? I'm not sure whether its connected but I also have a problem where another programme (Lotus Notes Traveller client) doesn't seem to be able to get access to the internet connection on the phone, regardless of whether its Wifi, 3G or anything else.
Thanks.
this may sound odd but bare with me! i can get on the net and emails but my hd would not check emails when in standby no matter what i did. I then realised i couldnt send or receive mms messages! all the settings seemed ok. Anyway in my mms connection i changed the wap setting to 1.2 from 2 and my mms worked! But since then my phone now checks email in standby! I didnt realise they were connected but may be worth checking.
Gav
How do you change that wap setting. I have the same problem, but on T-Mobile USA
Hi,
I found I could sync emails using Wi-Fi ok but got the dreaded "failed to sync" message when using the GPRS method. I am also on T-Mobile.
The problem is T-mobile only let's you send emails using there smtp.
You need to go into the email options menu and keep clicking through the settings until you get to the send using smtp box, here you need to type smtp.t-email.co.uk
This will send mail using the T-mobile network.
Please post back if this helps
Grez
Thank you - works perfectly for me! Good call!
Hi
Hoping someone can help me!
My Touch HD has been working fine up until yesterday, and now for some reason it is no longer sending emails. I know the settings are right because it was working fine until yesterday.
I have done a hard reset, and installed an alternative ROM but still no luck. My email server itself is working fine.
Any ideas please, it's driving me mad!
Thanks in advance.
Ben.
Anyone help!
Ben,
You'll have to give us a little more to go on.
Who is your Mail Provider?
What error are you getting?
Anything else that might help.
Paul.

Also are synchornising your mail by using WiFi or 3G
Provide Sreenshots if you can
Hi - I'm having a similar problem on my Touch HD. I have a POP email account set up which connects and downloads emails absolutely fine when I'm on Wifi or connected via Activesync. However when I am on a data connection (i.e. GPRS, 3G, etc) it comes up with an "synchronisation error", and suggests I edit my connection settings. The data connections works for everything else, including web browsing and other applications that require it. Its almost as if the mail application isn't being allowed access to the data connection unless its over wifi.

Check your service provider.
I had this problem once and they were "playing" with the POP access over GPRS.
I would give them a quick call.

Yup, sounds like I am having the same problem as DaveHodgkinson.
Can download emails fine, can access the internet fine. Just can't send emails. I know all my settings are correct as they were working fine previously, plus I can send/receive via Outlook and webmail absolutely fine. I have a QIQ hosting package with my own domain that I use for email.
I have read about other people having this same error on their WinMo devices, but have not been able to find a working solution for it.
The error message I get is "the message could not be sent. Check that you have network coverage and that your account information is correct. The try sending again".
Well I do have network coverage, and the account information is correct, so what next!!
This fault renders a major function of the phone unusable.
I doubt this is a "fault".
I'll bet your mobile provider is blocking port 25 making everything else not matter.
Get a telnet client and make sure you can telnet to your mail server on port 25.
Use your wireless providers SMTP server.

From searching google this problem appears to be too widespread to be operator specific. I have tried an alternate port and that also fails. I am on o2.
anybody anymore ideas?
Planetgong,
If you are on O2 UK, this worked for me:
If you can't get your own email providers SMTP settings to work then you can use O2 settings for sending email (while keeping your own email provider for incoming email). To do this your main email settings should look like this...
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)
Host Name: smtp.o2.co.uk
User Name: [email protected]
Password: youro2password
Your Advanced settings should look like this...
Outgoing Settings
Use SSL: Off
Authentication: Password
Server Port: 25
If you can't remember your O2 username and password (you will have registered this when you activated your phone) then just register another one at www.o2.co.uk (the 'Register' link is near the top left corner).
Hi
Thanks for the reply. I've just tried that but get the same error message. Can you tell me where I can find the advanced settings?
Planetgong,
Assuming you can log onto your o2 mail box on your PC/laptop. And sign out again.
Go through email setup, my outgoing mail server is smtp.o2.co.uk, tick outgoing server requires authentication, untick use the same name and password. Under "advanced server settings" (at bottom of screen) have both boxes unticked. Make network connection O2 active (not The Internet).
done and next.
Enter O2 user name and password
continue to end of setup.
Then try it!!
Hi
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately this still didn't work. It is like my Touch HD has suddenly decided to stop all outgoing SMTP connections. I have tried so many different things now and it still isn't working!
Just found this :

Although the problem is supposed to be solved on the version of Windows Mobile on the Touch HD, it clearly isn't! Cheers Microsoft.
Not sure what to do now. Don't see why I should accept a phone that all the features don't work on?
I've also got the .cab fix installed linked to by the traceyandmatt site.

Didn't work for me! couldn't send any email anymore! Restored a backupfile
Hello fokes,
When i had my HTC Vox i could easily receive mails with POP3 settings. The only problem was that i had to connect to my home network to send mails.
Since i have my TP2 i cant get connection to my mailbox using the mobile phone connection. If i log on to my home network everything go fine, but with 3G in don't receive my mail at all.
It was possible in the past, so it should work right?
Of course Exchange servers exists, but thats not an option for me (just home mails).
So is it possible to receive pop3 mails on my phone using only a 3G connection, and how? i tried it several times now but didn't get it done jet.
hmm... strange.. care to elaborate more??..
Do you mean u can check mails using gprs but not with 3g/hsdpa?
I'm using an Asia/Singapore set, but i can check emails pop3 in gprs/3g/hsdpa all fine..
i wonder if you can default your internet conection to 3g, so it won't automatically pick up edge.
are you connected to the PC when you check email? try changing your settings to only use 3g, that way you're forcing 3g to be the only connection to work. also, can you surf the net with 3g?
pop mail
Strange with my tp2 it works fine.
Are you sure it is allowed by vodafone.
At my phone I can send and receive mail.
Are you sure you used the right settings.
I think you did not use the right pop and smtp settings.
What provider are you using for your mail?
If you send me a personal massage I can answer you in dutch it's a little easier.
thanks for the replys
first of all my internet works fine using gprs/3g. i have 3g standard so i just called it 3g.
te settings of my mail accounts are correct. if i login to my home network (wifi) i receive my mails perfect and can send them.
sending mails over 3g/gprs did never work because i normaly use the mail server of my internet provider. so i can only sned emails if i use their connection.
in the past i had the htc vox (only gprs) with the same mailaccounts and providers. receiving mails worked perfectly, sending not.
i suppose it doesnt matter if i use gprs or 3g. didnt test it jet
i dont know of my providers uses restrictions.
gsm: vodafone
pop3: active24
smtp: tiscali / telfort
i know active24 has now exchange server support. perhaps they changed te servers and made it imposiible to me to connect with a phone without using that exchange server
@rodus: i will contact u if nessesary (afther this post). thanks for you help (to all)
mail settings
If you use your active24 smtp settings it should be possible to send mail with your phone. I found this settings on the active24 site maybe it will help you.
http://www.active24.com/sw17854.asp
thanks, this settings are not the one i used before (the one i got from active24.nl).
I can now send and receive mails after i used that settings and switching of the using of a proxy server connection.
because the proxy i couldn't access the pop/smtp servers.
now i only have problems with the mail client (from energy rom leo). editing acounts is not possible and auto send/receive seems not to work, but that is an other problem.
Thanks alot for the support
Guys please help.
I have two problems with Hotmail which I have no idea how to resolve
1. When I'm on the WiFi synchronizing still wants to connect through 3G. Why?!
2. It NEVER displays my whole inbox but ALWAYS ONLY 50 messages. Is that possible to work it out?!
I have this on every WM Device....
So nobody here beeing able to help?!
I don't know mate, I think it connects by 3G first by default. If I turn the phone off, then it does it by WIFI. It's what I usually do when I want to sync my mail anyways. So I have never looked into changing the order of what it uses to connect.

I think there was a setting for that message # thing. Aaah I cant remember right now I am sure someone else can remember this. I don't use hotmail myself on the X2, only GMAIL and I set mine to only show todays messages, so I never have the issues you are.

Sadly there is a limitation of 50 hotmail messages, and this limitation is in WM 6.5. I have looked in the registry and not been able to find any settings for this, seems to be hard-coded.
Please prove me wrong anybody!
The only solution I see is to use the POP3 protocol for your hotmail account instead of the hotmail client:
Incoming: pop3.live.com (SSL)
Outgoing: smtp.live.com
SMTP Port: 25, outgoing autentication required.

The same with WM 6.1.
This limitation is ****!
Well all of my emails are on ProfiMail anyway....
I hope this will be usefull
i didn't see the limit problem because my hotmail doesn't have many mails. but what i know about your wifi/3g connection is that you should change your setting in ==> Start/settings/Connections/connections, go to advanced tab and select networks, it opens network management for you that you can set the connection setting for programs that automatically connects to the internet and to a network.
you should choose any network BUT the network you associated your 3g with.
for example, i set both on my work network, so every connection goes out only on my wifi , if connected. if not there will be no costing connection.
