Hi All,
a mate of mine is planning on opening a restaurant soon and would like to know if an application is available that will allow workers to take food orders on PDAs (WM) and print to a wireless/ network printer.... also syncing out on a PC with all the info...
Can someone please point me to the right direction?
Any programmers have any simple programs written that i can have a look at?
Im going to use my touch HD to test this if possible...
many thanks, all help will be appreciated...
Hi,
5 minutes google =
http://www.jellobit.at/index.php (german site)
http://www.cmoglobal.com/ebusiness_...obile_waiter_in_restaurants_on_handhelds.html (multilanguage)
just search for "mobile waiter order" or similar
fwt
Just about every middle sized and up restaurant in China uses wireless POS type devices to transmit orders back to the kitchen and to the cashier. I bet you can get them a heck of a lot cheaper than springing for a WM device...try searching on www.taobao.com to access the CHinese suppliers directly. Good luck in a tough business!!
I've been to a resturant (Little Tokyo in Leeds - Yum!) Which seems to use Dell X51v to take orders.
I assume that it's wifi based, I found this on the web:
http://www.execu-tech.com/executouch-tablside.aspx
They may use something different though.

Hi Folks,
I am currently using TTN3 with UK and MRE. It is using a TomTom Bluetooth GPS and all works great with no probs at all. I am going to the USA on business at the end of the month. Does anyone know a way I can use it with tomtom maps of the USA without having to buy TOMTOM Navigator USA, but instead add maps to the TTN3. I think it would be wrong if I had to purchase the whole application again just because I fly over the big pond to the states.
Would you like a copy of DeLorme street atlas, I have the handheld version and the pc/laptop version.
DeLorme, makers of Street Atlas USA announced XMap Handheld - Street Atlas USA - Edition, a complete mapping program for the entire U.S. that lets users bring detailed, up-to-date street-level maps and directions on either Pocket PC or Palm OS handhelds.
With most handheld mapping software, users need to plan routes on their desktop PC before they set out on their trip. XMap Handheld Street Atlas USA Edition's unique feature of creating and managing address-to-address routing directly on the PDA is easy, providing the added security of always having exactly the maps needed and allowing for last-minute changes on the road. The enclosed desktop CD, with maps of the entire U.S., lets the user decide what kind of maps and how much coverage area they want to bring on the handheld. The software shows the amount of memory for each map prior to downloading. Users simply load as many maps as they want directly on the handheld or removable storage cards, and then quickly find directions and phone numbers to local restaurants, hotels, and much more.
XMap Handheld Street Atlas USA Edition provides detailed vector-based maps so users can search for their address book contacts, place names, streets, cities, or choose from categories including 4 million places of interest including hotels, ATMs, restaurants, gas stations, attractions, and more, most with phone numbers. Enter start and finish points on the map and the software automatically calculates the quickest or shortest route and displays a detailed map or written directions.
that would be great if you could. please send me the details and i will get in touch.
Just send pm.
Hi there. I have sent you a PM (i think) are we any further along in solving this one..
I need your details for posting.
Has anyone got this working on a WM5 device yet?
The url's that you go to come back with
"service is not available for your mobile device".. but there are lots of JAR's and JAD's floating around for different phone types..
EDITED:
As I'm not a Vodafone 3G customer - i'm after the SKY TV Guides and the ability t mark something as "to record" and have it automatically recorded at home.....

id be interested in this too
Can someone explain a bit mroe about this? Is it a service that sky are introducing for their customers, or an extra pay service? Cheers.
This is for current customer (for free):

Sky by Mobile - Is it possible on Windows Mobile?
By Gears. Published on 10 Jul 2006.
Some of you may be aware of a new service launched by Sky TV recently. If you're lucky enough to have one of their whizzy PVR's then you'll already be used to the live pause and recording to hard disk. However, recently they announced their Sky by Mobile service which allows you to get the latest news and videos from Sky plus you can now remotely set programmes to record onto your Sky+ box. Good eh?
Only one problem though. You need one of these handsets to run the software, and Windows Mobile isn't on there. I'd really like to use this service - I'm always forgetting to set my Sky+ box or I'm away from the house and I can't physically touch the remote. Last night I found this interesting digitalspy.co.uk thread and downloaded this JAR file and plonked it onto my Orange SPV C600. I opened it up in file explorer and ran it in the Java MIDlet Manager. It does actually work, I can load it up and enter my sky.com credentials, however it stops after that - I presume because it can't access the net. I can't seem to get around this and I've tried everything like opening a GPRS connection manually and tweaking with the security settings.
Has anyone else tried this successfully ? I'm trying the JAR file for the Nokia 6230 in this example but Sky hide the links so I've not found any other JAR files to test.
http://mobile.sky.com/SBM/series40/sky_S40_LR_SF_6230/SkyMobile_S40_LR_SF_6230.jar
It installs in the midlet manager, and runs, but does not connect or go any further.
Surur
ive tried the link in a few different browsers, pie, mnimo and the java based opera but no look, just says not compatible with your device, i guess we will have to wait untill the sky.com web based service is available and use the text service in the mean time
got excited when the letter came through the post, its been in the pipeline for about a year or so now
edit: looked at the website http://www.wecomm.com/ who i think are the company that provide the software for the service and they do have other products that work on WM phones, so maybe soon it will be on our wizards!
anyone know whether we are going to get this?
On a similar subject, does anyone have the software program that you need to view your sky channels via broadband? I've just registered for it, but they email the URL to the original email address that was given to them by the account holder, but my Dad never gave them one so I'm struggling to get the software!
Cheers.
I think everyone has given up on this but ive managed to get a collection of installers for various phones, using the user agent tags in firefox.
not managed to get any of them to work though! but thought they may be useful to other people.
edit: ignore this post i cant seem to upload the files!
but if anyone is interrested give me a shout, ive got about 13 different installer files, mainly nokia, motorola, SE an i think one might be for blackberry.
Hi,
I have a GPS reciever (bluetooth) an i have been looking everywhere for GPS software that wont cost me anything or i wont need to remortgage my house anyway.
Prefer the nothing part though!!! so anyone have ideas of where to find any?
Dave
Hi Dave,
Without meaning to be flippant, that really depends on what you want to do?
Presumably if you are loooking for free or cheap software, the likes of TomTom and iGo are out of the question? These are two of the better known route planning packages - I.e. get me from A to B - but cost. I'm not aware of any free or cheap alternatives.
If you want to know where you are - e.g. just show your position on a map, Windows Live Search beta or Navizon both do this for free (you'll need an inclusive data plan though as both download maps).
There are also moving map programs (e.g. Fugawi or Oziexplorer), although most require some form of raster map (£££) and are not free themselves.
If you find a good, free (or cheap) moving map package, please let me know!

Doesn't exists a free lunch... They wan't something very valuable, your personal data and they want to sell some part of your time to companies. How?
Is easy. Do you know in economical terms the meaning of RESOURCE? Is something that other people want, they would like to pay to have. The water IS a resource and the value and the price are related to the amount available and the request for this resource. But we have a LOT of water here, so the price is low.
SALT was a resource, then they have discovered new technologies to preserve meat and to obtain salt, but we still have SALARY (cames from SALT, SALE in italian) and SALARIA road in Italy...
The diamonds are something more requested and easy to understand, but try to think to something different: health or... your time! Having part of your time means to sell something to you and grabbing some of your money. All the money you earn is something to conquer.
So as an example you have TV movie for "free" (it seems they are free, you will pay later, in the supermarket )
You have it for free but they shared your full name, Lucid (AKA Mike H......... ?)
I prefer to give 100 Euros to Route 66, save connection time and battery and keep my personal data. Remember latins? Do you now what trojan horse is? (the FIRST one!) Troians found a wonderful giant horse and they want to bring inside the city (Troy) Only one said: TIMEO DANAOS ET DONA FERENTES , I am afraid of greeks, even when they bring gifts! I am afraid of companies EXPECIALLY when they brings gifts! we all knows the Troy story...
Windows Live Search
Try http://wls.live.com
Download the Pocket PC version
You have to have a data account to download the maps in real time. It does not point you in the direction you are headed. In other words the screen is always pointing north. However, it is fun to see the GPS in action. You must create a Com Port to the BT receiver and configure the options in the program to use the BT receiver. Not a full featured driving GPS solution but a good mapping solution.
So if one has a bluetooth GPS receiver and wants to pay for navigation software ...which one would be the best for accuracy and simplicity....regardless of cost?
that's a bit like saying what is the best car - it's a bit of a subjective issue. there are other threads that cover this

I tested Pocket street, Tom Tom 6 and Route 66. Then I had a Garmin eMap,now a Quest an tested an eTreck and a Nuvi.
TT6, R66,Nuvi are for city nav (are useless off road), simulated 3d nav. Nuvi has a great screen, TT6 and R66 are more or less the same, chose the one most updated from users for your area (I mean Point of Interest, POI, speed traps,...)
Quest iis great also on the sea and offroad, a great trackback function, really water proof, 20 ours of continuous functioning. Pocket street doesn't have routing capability, you just have gps info and the point on the map.
Quest (450 euro)if you have money, MS pocket street if you havent (25 euro) 200 (GPS+Sw+1gb SD) for TT6 and R66. If yuo like sailing, flying or trekking... Garnin!
I've used many GPS's thur the last few years and hove found that the Garmin products are all at the top of the list.
I just loaded Garmin Que on my 8525 and works great. I'm very use to the interface as it is very close to all the stand alone Garmin GPS I've used.
Garmin Que only works with a Garmin GPS receviver.
I have just got a copy of the TOMTOM V5.21 and unfortunatly the data disc with the maps on it was damaged on the way to my house. friend gave it to me. Now were cani go to get maps for it. i dont wanna spend money to get them, can this be done????
VirtualEarth Mobile freeware. Check p2p for the other stuff
I suggest you read the following thread carefully. First and last post is fine:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=287849
TomTom are checking this forum for illegal distribution of their software.
The fact that an aberrant alpha particle managed to penetrate the atmosphere and cause your map disk irrepairable damage is unfortunate.
Consider speaking to TomTom for a replacement.
Otherwise, search the board for TomTom and see what I've had to say about getting hold of non-retail copies of it.

I tried the Delorme product and TomTom 6 (I DID purchase them). I think Tom Tom 6 is just about as good as the one built into my car.
Come on folks, MOST of the software that runs on a pocketPC is not that expensive! Don't cause this place to shut down because you are too tight to lay out a few dollars.
If you can afford a PocketPC phone, you can probably afford to purchase the software that you need/want.
Awesome! A Shift section of its own. Now if we can just get our hands on some working models.
I'm hopeful someone can crack the stupid dumbed down version of WM that HTC is installing and figure out how to get WM6 on this beauty. The two dumbest things I've read so far are that a.) the PDA side can't access the SD card slot (that's even more idiotic than not being able to access the hard drive IMO), and the SnapVue program itself. I understand their desire to save licensing costs, but the whole decision to isolate the PDA side sounds like a deal they made with the telecoms - forcing the PDA side to only interact with the laptop side only through the telecom's system (where they can charge you with a data plan) is idiotic. Personally, I expect to use this device as a stand-alone laptop and not even use the 3G/HSPDA - I've already got that on my Trinity and paying for two full data plans makes zero sense. If anything, I'd like to do a BT modem lash-up through my phone.
If anyone's looking for some ideas to hack this thing, my personal wish list is:
1.) Get WM6 installed instead of SnapVue (may be a problem given the screen resolution tho)
2.) Unlock the SD card for the PDA side
3.) Unlock the hard drive for the PDA side (this would be HUGE)
Just imagine - you're on a flight, you watch a full movie on the PDA side off an SD card, using low battery consumption, then in the airport you tap into the WiFi and log into your work network to get work done, then later at the hotel you plug in and do some real work on the laptop side. Add in checking your push email on the cab ride to your hotel (PDA side, full keyboard) if you choose the HSPDA activation. That's my dream machine! now if I only knew enough code to make it happen! <grin>

Having been in the postion of carrying around (for several years)
a good data PDA (this means a Psion)
and a phone
and a Windows Mobile PDA (often an XDA so that makes for 2 devices total)
I have been waiting for Mr Shift to arrive since its first showing in early 2007.
In November the PDF manuals were available from FCC ... what a total disappointment. Did somebody from Apple join HTC? Did they close the architecure at every possible moment ... We need at least:
a) Ability to run full WM6
b) Ability to install any WM6 application
c) Ability to use it as a (very large) telephone
d) Ability to let the PDA part of the Shift be able to access the local Vista and a remote Windows machine
Many people (like me) use their Windows mobile PDA to act as a bridge from their work outlook (probably server) and their home Outlook standalone.
Currently my XDA's or equivalent forms that important link from my Work calendar, tasks and contacts, and my home calendar, tasks and contacts.
Any PDA replacement needs to be able to at least do that!
e) If using a 3G SIM and appropriate data plan then access via this to the Interweb from both PDA and PC sides.
The Shift would seem to make a pretty decent UMPC and it includes a keyboard, but as-is it seems the PDA function and the phone function are an insult to ones intelligence.
Sorry about the grumpy post!
we all
Hi,
No need to appologise.
I think we all feel the same about is.
The choises HTC made make no sence at all and make the PDA side of the shift nothing more than some kind of side-show.
Like everyone else I´d like a FULL pda side. With all normal apps (including office). Doing without phone capabilities might not keep me form buying the shift but if it has not got full pda functionality then it is totaly uninteresting. I would buy a small notebook with longer battery life. (and with XP for that matter).
So it´s time for the guys at HTC to wake up!
Maybe they could make different versions? I would be willing to pay a bit more for a version with full WM6...

How I agree!
Huib
I agree with everyone that the droned down version of this device sucks, but don't blame HTC. Blame vaporware maker Dualcor for their once great idea and not can't be found Dualcor PPC. It was suppose to run windows, and windows mobile and be a phone. After some time, they realized they couldn't do the phone thing and eventually the product, to my knowledge, was never fully released. HTC can't put the full version of windows mobile to due copyright infringment. Dualcor even stated it.
http://www.dualcor.com/
The link will take you to their website and if you read through, it was innovative and great and never really came about.
Can you truly blame HTC for doing the right thing and infringing? I would love for HTC to take Dualcor to court.
In an old saying that applies to dualcor, "either sh*t or get off the pot!"
Just my two cents. Flame away!
dont worry
hey we have a forum here (the best darn forum in the world) n boy we will get this device to perform as we want to. it may take time and help from the gurus out there but it WILL be done so lets just get our wallets / purses at the ready and hope htc release the shift this decade??

Uhm... SnapVue is just a name HTC came up with... what it *actually* is, is just a little DLL they wrote that overlays the WM6 taskbars so that you can't tap on them... I know because I've already gotten my hands on the relevant material and ported SnapVue to the Athena... what's more, I've also patched the DLL so that it doesn't disable the taskbars any more... assuming we can use Activesync to do our dirty business for us in terms of getting new certificates on the damn thing (failing that it'll be SPL hacking time) then it won't be a problem.
the proper Vista OS is interesting too... it's actually deployed in a bastardised sort of Symantec Ghost image type thing, but it weighs in at 8GB so there's not a bloody chance in hell you'll be seeing updates to this in their entirety.
Hey guys I'm new to this forum and everything that you guys do here(so if you could use a little patients with me i would appreciate it), but this forum has helped me to do some cool things with my htc titan, and for that i thank you. Now i ask you what kind of mods do you think will come out for the shift? There are some great developers here that can do some cool things, and from reading this topic do i correctly gather that it is possible to put wm6 on the shift, and it is impossible to put xp on the shift? sorry for the long post, but one last thing. What service provider and plan would be offered for the shift or what would be best for the shift?
went to the Garmins stall at IT Fair and asked for singapore maps price.
it was $100 USD ... man.
this is really stupid...whats the point of having all the technology n all if the maps themselves are so expensive.
and why are they encouraging piracy by making such expensive maps.
Is your question really relevant to this forum? Moreover, do you think anyone here can answer it?
Though I do agree that the price is stupid.
Expensive?? Do you know how much $ just the map data company (not including the software company that build software on top of that) spend to expand and maintain the map information (and keep them current)?? At first, it requires a driver to drive to every corner to collect all the data and don't you think the gasoline is free?
I know since I have friends working in that industry.
If you're looking for Singapore maps, go to www.malsingmaps.com Much like xda-developers, it's a user driven forum dedicated to making the most accurate and most detailed map for malaysia and singapore. And it's free.

Won't satellite images be a better alternative???
Sats don't know (yet!) the one way street, for example! And there is a lot, lot more data in the maps.
openstreetmap.org should eventually solve the price issue when the data is more complete and existing or new nav software vendors start using it.

indeed, and you can always make it better ! I have.. 3 days work and everyroad bridleway & path near me is perfect! amazing what you can do with GPScyclecomputer (on the diamond forum) and an x1..
GPSVP is a pretty neat piece of (now opensource) software that means you can use googlemaps(road&sattellite) live maps (road & sat) and openstreetmaps (and the many freeware garmin compatible maps around, there's a search on the homepage.
What I do is use the desktop version to download the various "zoom layers" of maps (mostly google or live sat maps) and then copy the folder across to the x1 sdcard.
works a treat and got me out a pickle whilst cycling through the netherlands on a path that wasn't supposed to exist..
http://code.google.com/p/gpsvp/
ooh new version, not tried that yet.
To the OP you have to remember the massive amount of work that goes into generating all the data for route navigation (and updating it).. that costs quite a lot of money
