I have a limited AT&T data plan, so I don't want to use my Internet connection through the plan too often. So a few questions.
1. If my wifi is on, does that override my AT&T data connection?
2. I installed Google Maps Mobile. It can find my location without GPS using My Location and cell towers. How can I turn my GPS off, so it doesn't transfer data?
Thanks.
Note that the GPS itself does not use the data connection, so it doesn't matter if Google Maps uses it or not. Google Maps is using the network (either WiFi or data) connection to get the map data, and would need it even if it doesn't use GPS for position.
If you were to buy 3rd party navigation software such as TomTom, CoPilot Live, etc., all the map data would be resident on your device and you wouldn't need a data connection unless you wanted to get traffic data.
Turn off gprs. Gps is an option in google maps. I do not need or have agps so this is not really an issue for me

is there any navitagor that DONT use GPS or data connection (wifi/gprs/3g..)??
i just want to see the map of my city and do routes, is it possible?
thnx
Garmin XT doesn't use data connection, and you can browse the map. but you have to have the maps installed to the PDA.
I don't know of any free software that doesn't use the data connection to download maps
I have TomTom 7 and i turned off all phone and data connections and was still able to use GPS.. its becaude tomtom doesnt need to access the internet to download sny maps.. your map is on your sd card.. gps satelite is free..
try it.. it sure beats routing your trips like yahoo or google maps..
Use Google Maps.
^^Google Maps uses the Data connection..............
I use MioMap and it doesn't use the data connection...the maps are on my SD card...and I like how you can d/l each state etc individually
MS Pocket Streets.
I used to have it when I did not have Data Connection.
It has been discontinued. it came with MS Streets and trips back in 2006
If you use your immagination, you might be able to find a cracked copy

can you elaborate a bit please??? Most navigation systems have to use either GPS, GPRS or some other form of data connection to calculate position, route, etc...
i used iGO 2006 with no gps,just maps...on magician
now i use iGO 8 on artemis, with gps
and iGO 8 on rw6828
iGO works very well even without gps

very good form of navigating when iGo doesn't know where you are
For real navigating (A->B) you have to use GPS or at least an available internet connection, to get your position.
In near future there may be location tracking with cell phone masts, but then iGo (and all other navigation software) only now where you are and not where to go
in tomtom i use advanced planning to tell it where to start and end to give me a route... i usually use it when im indoors where i dont have a gps signal...
i believe any program that has the maps built in should be able to do this..

sure... a dedicated gps system like tomtom, garmin, igo, etc has everything it needs to plan a route from point A to point B in the program itself and the maps it comes shipped with. it only uses the gps signal to make it easier for u by not having to enter a start point of a route u need to take or to find points of interest around u (restaurants, gas stations, ...) by using the location it calculates from the gps signal. all such systems are designed to work in places where there are no signals, e.g. tunnels, interior of buildings.
so, if somebody doesn't even have a gps reciever (built-in or bluetooth), hr still can use anyany of these ssytems to plan routes, find points of interests, or browse maps... but, u have to enter ur location manually everytime. and u wouldn't be able to use the turn-by-turn navigation feature that needs to know where u r to be able to tell u the next turn.
Is there a way to set my Diamond to turn on the 3G connection when I use Tomtom? It turns on when I go into IE and Opera, but when i go to Tomtom it doesn't activate.
Thanks for the help
as far as I know, you dont need 3g or any internet connection for that matter when using TomTom. As long as you have TomTom and the proper maps installed, you can just get all the data you need via your internal GPS reciever.
Ive been connecting to 8-14 gps satellites with the nodata cab installed and all toggled to off, as well as schap's advanced config tool with all network settings to off.
im using 3g connection to get traffic update, you cant receive it with the internal gps receiver!
just try to do traffic update and be sure that the settings are correct ,wap or something instead of your isp
Tnanks for the replies. I could be wrong here and totally off my rocker, but I thought that I get faster signal lock when I have 3G on.
Again, could be way off and I was just seeing things.
djcedric is right about the traffic update. Cvrle1, as far as i know, you are wrong about the faster signal lock. If you use the QuickGPS app via 3G or wifi or whatever data connection you use, it downloads the newest satellite data to your phone, giving a very fast signal lock. After I have the QuickGPS settings it takes me about 1-3 seconds to find all the satellites.
Note that the quickGPS settings are only valid for a week, when it expires you have to run QuickGPS again, otherwise it takes considerably longer to find the satellites.
Hope this helps.
Hi does the GPS need a data plan to activate?
I can only seem to browse maps w/ GPS when im connected via Wifi or data plan is on.

The GPS does not need a data plan, however the maps application does. It pulls map data live over the internet.
I would like to see standalone gps nav software come out for android (garmin xt port?)

Oh. thanks for the information.
is there a standalone gps nav software available already? Im guessing it wont be free if such thing exists?
Even if you get off-line GPS software, the GPS driver only tries to sync the almanac data required to get your position when you're actively using the GPS - and it may take up to 12.5 minutes to sync it... So you may be sitting around with the GPS on for 12.5 minutes before you can use it.
Normally it syncs this over the data connection immediately.
Some background....
I had problems with bluetoothing to my Volvo V70 but this was cured by turning off the data connection. When Volvo update their BT rom I can routinely turn it back on/ignore it but....
What will I be losing in the meantime? I understand the weather updates use this connection but what else?
My main worry would be losing the Live services (traffic info, etc.) on the installed CoPilot 8 satnav software pre-installed and now paid for. What am I overlooking?
Cheers, Mark
data gives you everything that isn't a phone call or txt message.

GPS applications use the satellite reciever in the phone to calculate position which incurrs no charge.
If you have other services such as live traffic weather, or a satnav application that downloads maps on the fly (like google maps) then you need a data connection.
Unless your just being pedantic...

Some GPS mapping programs might use data, others not, but the GPS receiver itself is autonomous.
But how can the answer be so complicated anyway? Data connection is your mobile connection to the Internet. So when you're in your car driving around, disabling data stops everything you'd do that requires internet connection. Your live traffic downloads the info from the web, so you can guess...

That is what I needed - so I will turn off data on local trips or when I need phone connection and enable it on longer trips or when I need to check live services.
Many thanks!
make sure you thoroughly test whatever data off method you use, the hd2 is a determined connection whore.
Has anybody noticed that if you use the gps status app before you use the google maps that the gps connect quicker for any app using gps such as maps, weather, where, etc... until phone reset.
When I run google maps first gps would just search for several minutes and sometimes wouldn't even find the location. So for anyone with gps issue probably try the gps status app from the market first.
I'm wondering if the gps status and google maps access the epic 4g gps differently... just a thought
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I did what you suggested and indeed the gps locked much faster on google maps when I used GPS status first.
three epics here. extensive GPS testing over weeks now.
what you are seeing is gps status forcing aGPS vs "use wireless location, whcih is not aGPS.
If your ephemeris is new or has been cleared (the Epics main problem is not clearing ephemeris) you get an aGPS lock in seconds on GPS/aGPS only application like GPS status. But on application that can use either location method, the non GPS Use wireless networks" or the GPS, it often tries to get a wireless tower location first.
I get the identical affect by turning off the tower based system by keeping "Use wireless networks" normally off. this gives me instant aGPS locks five to ten seconds in proper conditions at all ties with cold start enabled.
