I have noticed my Xperia has turned on the data connection a few times without me requesting it to. I was not doing anything, so hopefuly i will not be charged (i don't have any web usage in my contract).
Is there anything i can install that will password protect the data connection or at least stop it acciedently turning on?
Had the same with my Prophet - in the end I installed SPB GPRS Monitor which gave me an idea of how much it used (could also set it to warn you when it went over limits, cut connection I think, etc)
Next to that, whenever I wanted to disable it (e.g. roaming, etc) I changed the networks used (settings-->connections-->select networks) to something without settings, that way programs that connected automatically didn't find the right settings and couldn't connect (for when the phone was in my pocket etc).
Not sure if there is an app available now to PW protect the data connection - been on an unlimited plan for a while now (internet/rss feeds etc).
I had a similar issue until my data plan became active.
There's a free program on the modaco website called nodata that allows you to turn off/on the data connections when needed. It worked very well whilst I was using it.

I currently have the Cingular 8525 and recently went down to Baja for a week. I had the phone function on to let me know when a call came in and then would go to the local internet cafe, switch the phone function off using "flight mode", confirmed phone function was off in "Comm Manager" and looking at "Settings/WLAN Settings" for the WiFi establishment.
I would then use Skype on the WiFi network to make calls back to my cell phone carrier to retrive messages.
Upon returning to the U.S. and reviewing my usage on the Cingular Web page I find that I have "Roaming Data Charges" to the tune of about $120. I have talked to Cingular and they were perplexed as to how the data charges were incurred if the phone funciton is turned off. HTC technical services were equally perplexed. HTC came up with the solution of pulling the sim card out to totally disable the phone function while still allowing WiFi access. In the states I have unlimited data access so this is not an issue, but since I travel abroad frequently, this could get costly without a simple solution (pulling the sim card out each time is not a simple solution).
Is there anychance that one of the following apps are allowing my phone to indicate that the phone is in flight mode (phone disabled) while still broadcasting in GSM/UMTS.
All thoughts on the subject are appreciated

Not sure if this helps, but after a couple of rediculously high months of data usage on my Orange UK contract, for two months I did not use any data features on the phone unless it was docked with my laptop, using it's broadband connection to browse on the phone. The opposing arrows signal was showing, signifying that my tytn was using the laptop's connection. My bills still show high usage, I had NoData running, blocking all Gprs usage.
Is it possible for the sim card to be still recording the data transfer and wrongly charging me for the usage? I have tried speaking to Orange about this but each time they have not understood what I'm talking about.
I'd sugggest you to try Spb GPRS Monitor.You need to play with it to tune it right way. It allows to monitor up to 5 different connections, and have a Today plug-in and an indicator in the top bar to show the activity. It helped me a lot by signalling that my phone uses GPRS instead of WiFi (no, I never even heard of GPRS/UMPT in flight mode!).
I have it set up to monitor GPRS for two SIM cards I have, connection via USB and BlueTooth. For any other type of connection (incl. WiFi) it does not indicate anything. Quite enough for troubleshooting, and also to understand your bills.
Probably there are similar apps, I never tried them.

I put the SPB GPRS Monitor on the phone and low and behold apparently any time the system kicks into the GPRS data mode, and it seems to do this on its own every once in awhile you get charged for the link whether you use it or not. SPB GPRS Monitor does a good job of letting you know if your not paying attention to the Martini Glass icon up top.

at times i would just airplane mode at times and just use wifi, even for calls. So yeah you can do that...
so wifi on the verizon mogul is free and nothing will be charged to me for using it. (I dont have the data plan)

If you don't have a data block, you run the risk of of connecting to EvDo and getting charged 'pay as you go'.
But then there was a change to the data plan about a month ago and I hear it is now nearly impossible to NOT have a real data plan.

yeah thats what ive heard. It seems like if you want a ppc or smartphone that your have to get the data package to even get the phone. thanks for the quick response.

I just switched from Qwest to Verizon and got upgraded to the 6800 from the 6700. To get around the data plan you can use the pay as you go just change the dial up number to anything but #777 and you never connect to the network and don't get charged.
I dont have a data plan either. I use the wifi all the time. the main reason I got this phone was for the wifi capability. I am curious how to use it uner flight mode because it never lets me..

This is my first contribution to xda-forums! I'm glad I can help at all when I've benefitted so much... Thanks to all!
NOTE: After the following steps, Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably will want to use Nodata, and NOT the following solution. You just might have to open Nodata and disable the data connection every time you soft-reset.
I was finally able to completely 100% block the 3g data connection on my Verizon XV6800 (aka Mogul aka Titan) was the following three steps:
1. The key culprit is HTC_CM_Guardian.exe in the windows directory. I couldn't edit it or delete it via Total Commander file explorer, but I was able to rename it! This makes the OS unable to find the program when it tries to re-set the Data connection settings.
2. Under Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > "Select which networks are automatically used," hit "Select Networks."
3. Under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" hit "New...".
4. Enter any name you want (mine's "nodata!") and leave all the other settings blank.
5. To be safe, you may have to delete the Verizon Or "Internet" Connection on the Tasks Tab of Settings > Connections > Connections. Save and exit.
Voila! Wifi, yes; 3g, no! No more nasty billing surprises.
Modaco's Nodata program is awesome, but the problem was that HTC_CM_Guardian.exe re-enabled the data connection every time I reset the phone. Plus, HTC_CM_Guardian.exe would also thwart any effort to block data via the "Connection Settings." By renaming HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and creating a "nodata!" connection that programs auto-connecting to the internet would try to use (and fail), we get three results:
1. Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably won't to use this solution.
2. When you reboot, the OS is unable to mess-up your "Connection Settings", so
3. Unless you have an active wifi connection, programs will try to connect to the Internet using the "nodata!" settings, which, being empty, will fail, exactly as planned.

simple solution
It's a lot easier to check the "use dialing rules" box. I had a HTC Touch that I used this on and when I lost that, went to a Mogul. I love the wifi on it! I worked as a ATS rep for Sprint for 5 years and half the time when a windows phone would not connect to vision, it was the checked dialing rules box or a wrong number like the customer's own number instead of the dialing string. I tried just deleting the dialing string but even a soft reset caused the phone to recreate the #777 as well as the phone as modem #777. I hated the phone connecting on it's own, bumping the wrong button in my pocket, and I know this will work every time. EVDO data transfer charges without a plan will cap at $75 now but still why take the chance? If you absolutely have to get on the web and there's no wifi around, break down, call *2 and add a $15 vision plan, do what you need to like find a location with Live search then cancel it the next day. The plan will be prorated from when you added it to when it was cancelled. The only hitch is you have to allow your device to IOTA successfully while in a Sprint service area once to get the data settings in the phone which entails the data transfer again. Ahhh, I'm liking the wifi more and more......

When I'm in the house (and assuming I've got the wifi switched on on the Tytn 2), how do I get it to use the Wifi to access the Web as a first option?
Even when its connected to my wireless LAN (which it does with no problems at all - much better than my old Wizzard), if I launch Explorer it automatically makes a GPRS connection. The only way to force it to use the Wifi seems to be to turn the Phone off in the comm manager - which then means I can't receive any calls.
I can't find any setting that dicates the network hierachy i.e. that says if there is a Wireless LAN connection then don't bother with GPRS, or if there isn't, then use GPRS.
I seem to recall there was something similar on desktop Windoze where you could have it automatically use a dial up connection if there was no LAN available.
Can anyone help?

I'm now getting the same thing using Emoze - the thing is sitting here connected to the Wifi & will sync mail & contacts etc over the wifi quite happily - but as soon as I try & send mail from the handheld it starts up not one but two GPRS connections (!) Much the same as if I try & get a web page up - it automatically goes to GPRS as its default route to the internet despite that fact that its already connected via wifi & the only way to stop this behaviour seems to be to switch the phone off in Comm Manager.
Seems to be something inherrantly odd about the way the Tytn 2 is deciding what network connection is available & which it should use. It looks like it needs a little control application to sit between the IP stack & the hardware so that when a request comes it can be routed according to user preference - i.e. Use WIfi if available, Only use GPRS etc The Wifi doesn't seem to fire up a connection when it feels like it - only the GPRS. Do all the HTC devices with WIfi behave this way?
In the meantime, does anyone know of a simple way to turn off/disable GPRS without disabling the phone?

I use 3 different wifi networks during the course of a day, well 2 a day, 3 through out the week probably. Home/Work/Friends house
I have a very small data package (5mb) so i am very choosy about when I use my data connection!
Anyways, did some testing.
I already know that if I have no wifi, no data connection on, then I try and start outlook or Internet Explorer, then my data connection starts up (as it should)
now if i have my data connection on, then i turn on wifi on the phone, the wifi connection takes over and the data connection is not being used, even though it's on.
I also have no problems with when wifi is on and data is off, and if i goto outlook or IE, that gprs decides to go on. this does not happen tome (unless for some strange reason wifi cuts out, gprs tries to take over)
So i dont know if its something with your settings or not, maybe your phone goes to sleep and wifi turns off then gprs takes over, or i could be misunderstanding your question, because now that I think about it, perhaps you are asking something like..
- at home no wifi or data connection is active at that moment
- you navigate to a page in IE and instead of gprs turning on, wifi turns on/scans for lan and uses that

You should be able to use the comm manager to turn off the data connection, but as for keeping it off permanently, until you decide you want it to be even allowed to be active again maybe you can try this, it should disable your connection until you see fit.

Great little utility , thanks very much for pointing that out - it at least allows me to do what I want manually - i.e. use my wifi without having to turn the phone off.
Although I know you can disconnect GPRS from the Comm manager, it also doesn't seem to have an idle time out so once an application (like Emoze) has started it up it keeps running in the background. Also, as soon as you turn it off, inevitably Emoze turns it straight back on! The NoData application gives much more control so thanks for that.
I do go abroad reasonably often so also happy to be able to use it for its primary purpose of disabling GPRS whilst roaming to avoid silly charges
It would be great if HTC could build a bit more intelligence and control into the network side of these things though.

You may want to look into Schaps Advanced Config or KaiserTweak for wifi/gprs settings.
You can set timers and disconnects, etc, with those applications.

The Good News: I fixed this behavior on the phone w/o any 3rd-party utilities, etc.
The Bad News: I'm not 100% sure how. :-/ My apologies. Here is what I think did it:
Make sure your browser is closed and you have no open data connections.
1- Open the Wireless Manager and make sure "WLAN" is on and "Data Connection" is off.
2- Go to Start>Settings and choose the "Connections" tab along the bottom.
3- Open "Wireless LAN," choose your home wireless network, and make sure you're actively connected to it (should see a signal quality meter, device network settings, etc).
4- Close "Wireless LAN" and while "Settings" is still open and on the "Connections" tab, open "Wi-Fi." Your list of known Wi-Fi networks should be showing: make sure your home network says "connected."
5- Close everything back out to your "Today" screen.
When my Tilt is set this way -- and actively connected to my WLAN -- the Wireless Manager grays out "Data Connections" and doesn't even respond if I tap the icon. IE automatically uses my WLAN, although it won't connect to some of its pre-loaded favs b/c, I think, they're on WAP servers and the Wi-Fi/NAT router assigns/negotiates TCP/IP protocols for your phone.
I think now I accomplish all the above by simply opening the keyboard and pressing the FN/Wi-Fi key.
FYI -- In truth, I solved this problem by installing Opera Mobile and setting it as my default browser. Opera Mobile is a full browser, i.e. doesn't use WAP.

I gave my wife my old 8125 to use when her phone went out, now she's hooked on it & wants to be able to check e-mail. she dosen't have or want a data plan on it, and is home most of the time, but can't get to the computer b/c of other responsibilities.
I have set it up to access wifi, and it will use it for PIE, But when I set up the e-mail account it wants to dial out to check. I have tried setting the account to work, and internet but it just won't work, If I let it use medianet it's fine.
Any ideas?

I can then connect to a hotspot and everything else uses wifi instead. SMTP mail, internet browsing, google, search, etc. all flow through the wifi and I don't get billed for it.

Is there way I can permanently turn off data so that programs like mail and weather do not automatically connect to it and turn it. I don't have a data plan so I don't want to be charged for it. The only reason i don't just delete the AT&T media net settings is because I need it when I want to use MMS.
Search on "NoData".
the problem with no data is that i cant reconnect to media net after i disable it. so im looking for an alternate solution

That's what I figured is the only solution, but sometimes the phone will just automatically connect to data so that there is the symbol on the top bar and when I go to the communications screen, the data switch is off. Will I be charged just for being connected or only if I download something. Basically is it charged by just bytes downloaded or also by time connected.
Yeah I had the same problem when I was roaming abroad. Every day it connected at night and used for approx. 1euro50 data. By the time I was back home I received a 45 euro bill! I also disabled weather, sync and stocks. No idea what application using data connection...
MoDaCo noData allows you to turn off Internet, WAP, and MMS independently. Why is this not a suitable solution?
