Images in emails - Touch HD General

Hi all,
Firstly, WOW what a handset! This has to be the best HTC handset yet!
Anyway, on to my problem/request...
Is there a way to enable loading of images in the email messages on my handset? At the moment, I get empty windows with a red "x" in them.
Thanks all!
Wayne

there should be an 'internet pictures blocked' message at the top of it. click on that to allow them and you should see the images.

Duh! Thanks!
Is there a way (perhaps a reg edit) that will allow this by default? I have got the amount of data downloaded set to a minimum so not bothered about the size of the email. Would just be nice to get the images by default.
Once again, thanks!

Just replying to this to keep it fresh. Not sure what replies I'll get if this moves too far down the list

Not ever found such a reg key to allow this.... it's a right royal pain in the ass.
Only work around Ihave ever found is to use a 3rd party application like Flexmail by Webis - http://www.webis.net/products_info.php?p_id=mail
(But I don't use it myself as I find it a little unwieldly with my Corporate ActiveSync integration)

If you use a third party mail checker, does it integrate into TF3D and S2U2 like the default mail software?

Enable e-mail images by default?

Wanted to re-visit this thread folks. Anyone know of a way of always enabling images in e-mail because this is a royal pain in the arse!
Failing that is there an alternative e-mail client?
Cheers...

No images.

Well, no, I click on that, tries to (?) download images, still no images...
Same with the RSS hub reader... no images whatsoever.
IE and Opera running smoothly (with images ), so it's not a problem with the Internet access...
Thanks for help
(currently on Miri's WinMo 6.5 ROM (latest Premium 7.3 release), but same behaviour on Dutty's and others)

This is a long standing issue with Windows Mobile.
Microsoft "claim" its a security "feature". I still remain unconvinced. Since when have Microsoft been bothered about my security?

How to remove Activesync and Hotmail from the Inbox ListView

I removed all of this from my registry and no Activesync or Hotmail now listed, this works for me as i dont bother with either of them, I use GPRS to check me mail and never use hotmail, figured it was time for them to go.
Even though they are no longer visible in the Inbox app, they still appear in Pocket Breeze, anyone help out further?
Below is the 3 sets of backups i made during removal
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\ActiveSync]
"FriendlyName"="Outlook E-mail"
"UserCannotCreate"=dword:00000001
"DLL"="syncmgr.dll"
"Name"="ActiveSync"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\ActiveSync\MsgClasses]
"IPM.Note"=dword:00000001
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox\Svc\Hotmail]
"UserCannotCreate"=dword:00000001
"Port"=dword:00000000
"DefMsgClass"="IPM.Note"
"SupportedMsgClasses"="IPM.Note"
"DLL"="pMSNHotmail.dll"
"Name"="Hotmail"
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Inbox\Pocket MSN]
"Link"="Pocket MSN.lnk"
"Domains"="hotmail.com;passport.com"
My aim is to remove all mail accounts except the 3 i use, ie my POP3, SMS and MMS, which is what I now have in my Inbox, just not everywhere else so far
Good jobs.
Sorry, how did you remove them?
exactly, in the examples that you posted here, there are no changes to the original registry.
no no no, they are the keys i removed totally from the registry, they were cut + pastes from my backup files.
soz for confusion
Amazing! Works great. Thanks a lot
i know this seems a bit trivial but have you tried removing pocket breeze, doing the changes then re-installing ? i think pocket breeze creates all its headers etc when it installs?
its a good theory unfortunatly i wont be able to try it unti tomorrow night, godda do a bit of travelling

I've done this but I no longer get notifications when I receive a text message
Yeah!! I have the same problem!!! What´s wrong?
I simply removed the hotmail registry entry in
HKLM\Software\Mircosoft\Inbox\Svc
I can't see a need to remove the other entries as Active Sync and MSN Messenger are not displayed in my list of inboxes.
However, I do not use Pocket Breeze.
I'm guessing the active sync keys are responsible for your alert notifications?
Just sent a text message to my phone, i'm still receiving the notifications on arrival so i'm pretty sure its the active sync reg keys you've removed.
What?
How would I re-add this?
it works great..
but now I have hotmail1 account!!!!!???
causes Problems with Pocket Outlook
Just for the record:
another nasty little side effect of removing the ActiveSync-Registry items posted above is that Pocket Outlook will crash on load.
If you use alternative means of sending and receiving SMS thats no biggie, but I thought I'd mention it.
(slightly off-topic: )
By the way, has anyone resolved the issue with tmail.exe and 3rd party apps for sending SMS? I can send them through pocket Outlook, but not through any 3rd party apps (Flexmail, Pocket Informant etc...).
This Knowledge Base article suggests it's an OS-Issue, so I thought I'd ask you guys...

Email Pictures

Sorry if this has been asked before but is there a way to allow the HD to automatically download pictures in emails? It blocks them by default and it's a pain manually downloading the pictures for each individual email.
Thanks in advance.
advanced email options
you find a dropdownbox
called download attachments
which deside size of attachments
that should be auto downloaded
thats not true, so the problem isnt solved
afraid its a limitation of Windows Mobile that wont go away, along with that dreaded 'tap to scroll right' nonsense.
I was hoping to hear that the email client has been revised with windows mobile 6.5, sadly there have been no reports to suggest that this may bethe case.
I got the impression that it is not a limitation but rather a deliberate design decision due to security. Many viruses are transmitted in the form of pictures on email. I recently installed my Window Vista Home Premium edition and saw this information. It is only if we're completely sure of the safety of the mail that we download the picture.

Point is - there are two annoyances of WM that make viewing emails unbarable.
1) "Tap to download Internet Pictures" - annoying as hell considering many of my emails are HTML and contain images
2) "Tap to scroll right" - I have a Touch HD with massive screen yet still have to jump through this "tap to scroll right" hoop just to read a lengthy (mainly HTML) email.
iPhone on the other hand quite frankly embarasses WM in terms of its email client. Hopefully WM 6.5 fixes this, but i've heard nothing...

Do you mean that option in the iPhone email client that allows you to view your HTML emails in landscape mode by any chance? Or the one that allows you to save attachments off to somewhere on your phone for safe keeping/viewing later then delete the email?

Microsoft MyPhone service

As seen in recent WM6.5 cooked roms, there's a feature called Microsoft My Phone, which should be an online synch of contacts and whatsoever on the phone. Anyone got to try that?
http://myphone.microsoft.com
I got it on my Diamond, tried it out. It works as advertised. It backs up your stuff in the cloud, and everything is accessible via web as well.
However, I sync my contacts with my school's Exchange server and also with Windows Live, so it's kinda useless for me.
I guess if you aren't synced to another service and if you flash different roms a lot, this can be useful. It backs up everything (text messages, media, contacts, documents, etc)
The only complaint I have is that it just syncs up anything, so it takes pictures from Opera's cache. My my phone is already full of random small images and gifs from the Opera folder. I don't think there's a way to assign different folders not to sync.
I can't get why, but I can't use that. I signed, I got the mail from MS telling me I've been enabled, I even downloaded the latest cab from the MS Live Page but this just won't allow me to synch, reporting MSN ID issues. Anyone got this working under WM6.5?

Apparently, there was this issue, check the link here.
My Phone Team Blog
I read it was only compatible with WM6 and 6.1 but the workaround you pointed worked great! I could finally synch, even with 6.5 ROM! Thanks!

Have you ever been able to sign in?
Also, when I signed up, there were limited places on the beta program, and it took about a week before I got allocated a place...
I'm currently using an exchange server, but MyPhone backs up my pictures and text messages, which Exchange just can't do.

After the initial waiting period (to be picked), and after a fresh install of the app downloaded right from MS (not the one in 6.5ROMs, it's buggy), I was able to sign in and synch in a couple of seconds.

I've found the myphone app very usefull. I've been testing a load of ROMs over the last couple days and without the myphone app it would be annoying trying to backup and restore all my contacts, text messages and calendar items all the time.
After using myphone for about a week I have come to the conclusion that Dashwire is a lot better. Both the phone interface and the web interface win hands down in my opinion.
Check it out dashwire.com/
wow! this is interesting!
I create a new account @hotmail.es
I received the invitation! and it syncs!

IDEA: Easy way to have a native GMAIL app on Windows Mobile...

I had an epiphany today, I want to share this idea, perhaps someone here has the knowledge to pull it off, unfortunately, I am not a C programmer:
Gmail already has built in RSS feeds. Every Gmail account hass RSS feeds for every label at https://mail.google.com/mail/feed/atom/LABEL/ (This also works for Apps at https://mail.google.com/a/DOMAIN.TLD/feed/atom/LABEL/ ).
The only requirement is that the feed reader support authentication.
Now lets bring pRSSreader into the equation (http://code.google.com/p/prssr/)
Supports SSL, Yes!
Supports Authntication, YES!
Source Code Available! GPL!
So to start: A competent developer begin with the pRSSreader code, change the UI a bit so that it will revolve around inputing gmail accounts and it will be able to read our mail)
The next step is to add a simple SMTP component that will send outgoing mail through the GMAIL smtp.
What do the smart people here think?
I'm not critisizing your idea by any means, but why not using the mobile JAVA app done by google?
It works flawlessly with JBED or JEODEK for WM. The functionality is also great. Of course, it's not native WM app, but it's still worth a while.

^^ that was the point of ethanpil's suggestion.
@ethanpil, I think it's a good idea, the only hole I see is that it's mostly for people who actually use the labels now, yes?
wait....maybe i'm not understanding u guys properly...u dont wanna use the mail program that it came with?? i have a diamond and i synced it to my outlook which has gmail..so when i'm on WIFI it vibrates when i get a gMail.....
so what is it that Java program do that this one doesn't??
Why not use Emoze? That has true push and works great with Gmail. Gmail also has a Exchange server for your calender and contacts.

Why do ppl want this?? Outlook can link to IMAP from google natively. Which All wm6 phones have...so why does anyone care about an external app that windows can do by default. I'm not discounting it or anything I'm just really confused on this issue

I am with you here, gmail with imap is the way to go. If your device automagically finds gmail settings, just misspell gmail when entering your email addy, then fix it after you have unchecked to automatically find settings.
I believe the reason for doing this is to get away from the built-in (WM) applications which for the most part suck. Not to mention that the emails are stored in a database and not in individual files (as in Qmail). Even if it was stored in a database, the database should be easily manipulated to allow for quick backup and recovery operations (SQLite?). Not to mention that such an application can implement great features like imap-idle and connecting over 1x/gprs to save battery life (and privates).
Just my two cents.
The reason is as many have guessed above:
1) The Java version sucks for WM users: its not native, and a few times alerady if I exited hastily by hitting the X instead of through the menus then my DB was corrupted and I had to reinstall the app
2) Something native will be able to take advantage of all of the features of WM and run in the background better.
3) The native apps also suck.
4) Push IMAP and activesync take horrendous battery power
Anyway, I have been using NewsBreak to read my gmail by RSS and it works great, updates once per hour, and runs real fast in background and I get notification of new emails and I only downlod the labels I need... Its just a pain to then login to gmail app to reply...
I have a small application (in VB.NET) that I am working on but in this moment it is "work in progress". I am able to connect to GMail over SSL in POP3, SMTP and IMAP.
In this moment I am trying out POP3 but I have some problems when downloading larger attachments from GMail (out-of-memory exceptions) which I have to sort out.
I guess I could make a native application for GMail - however the first beta version would not support attachments (at least larger attachmnets - let's say more than 200KB - until I have sorted out the problem mentioned above).
In order to produce a first version, I still would need some days but if there's interest, I could give it a shot.
Rgds,
Tilleke

Add spellchecking to your applications.
See: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=495728
this would def worth a shot since it's a bunch of shareware ideas taken into an all in one freeware app to add to our collection of greatly developed freeware. i'd rather use a custom made freeware app that will always add features rather than waste memory with certain shareware programs just to have all the bells and whistles scattered across the cluttered memory

I've been doing that since my 8525.. I can't believe that anyone would rather 'fight' with a 3rd party app.. I can see the argument for push, but if you really need up to date inbox, just get a scheduler to set your 'active' hours so you get faster updates when you need it. Typically I get emails at the same time though.

My first thoughts on the Hero

Okay, my first thoughts on the Hero.
Good
------
Hardware is lovely. The unit feels just right in the hand, and graphite colour is great.
Screen is very sharp and has excellent colour.
Sense UI is a huge improvement over stock Android is virtually every way.
HTC E-Mail client is great compared to standard cupcake version.
Browser is very fast, and text wrapping is very effective.
Phone is now unlocked and running on Vodafone (thanks to the folks at unlock-now.com). It detects this, and offers to update all my settings accordingly. Nice.
Bad
----
HTC Smart Dialer doesn't correctly display contacts that only have a company name in them. The numbers show up but with 'unknown' next to them. They display properly in the 'People' application, so it's definitely a HTC bug (I seem to remember the same problem with early versions of this dialer on WM).
GMail client won't let me set a 'reply-to' field. I use GMail for all my e-mail, but use a forwarding service (pobox.com) so want to set my reply to field accordingly. I can get the functionality by using the HTC e-mail client, but then I lose HTML mail capability.
GMail and HTC Mail don't integrate in the mail widget. You can only see accounts configured using HTC Mail.
Flash in browser is very hit and miss. Some simply stuff works, but not much.
Standard calendar application is rubbish. The iPhone is way better here. I guess I'll be looking for a third party alternative.
I'll post more as I discover it.
Bagpuss.
Cool, thanks for the quick update.
When you say the standard calendar is rubbish, can you elaberate more on this? I use the calendar quite a bit and was hoping there would be a widget to show tasks/appointments on my home screen.
Any chance of a video going round the calendar or a good detailed explanation of it?
Sorry to ask again, but the reviews say that the phone WILL sync directly with Outlook (not just exchange) and I have ordered one on that understanding. Could you confirm this for me, please? Ta...

Sorry, don't know about this as I don't use Windows or Outlook.
From what I understand, you can sync with Outlook, but you need to use the HTC Sync software. The only problem is that HTC haven't yet made the Hero version available for download. If you go to their support site, they don't have a section for the Hero yet. I'm guessing this will change once the phone is officially released SIM free.

The main problem is that you can't get a month view, and be able to move across days to see what they actually contain. On my E71, you see the month calendar on the left, and a small pane on the right which changes to show the events for each day. On the iPhone, you get something similar, but see the details at the bottom of the screen. On the Hero, you get a full screen month display, but have to click on individual days to see the detail. Not a big thing for some, but it's a change to what I like.
You can go to what they call 'Agenda' view which gives you a long list of all upcoming appointments, but you can't get a week view. There is a day view, however.
There is a calendar widget, and it does show today and tomorrow details, but it's very small.
Hope that helps,
Bagpuss.

Simply insert your foreign SIM, it will prompt you for the unlock code. Enter the code from unlock-now.com, and it all works.

Not sure on the battery life at the moment, as I've not had it long enough to tell.
Sadly, you can't rotate it so the trackball is on the left. It's only a software thing, though, so HTC might implement it in future.

you set up the reply to address on the Gmail website.
It's in Settings > accounts, and it sends as whatever you have the default email address set to in the 'send mail as' section.

No, you can not be signed in to two Gmail accounts at once. you can set up a second Gmail account in the mail application to access your mail from the second account, but i don't know any way to access calendars from a second account unless you can share calendars between accounts. maybe that will work?
How is the screen outdoors?

Thanks, I think that will do. I can sign in with one of the Gmail accounts and set the other one in the mail application. Regarding the calendars I just noticed that all my google calendars are only in one of the accounts. So I will sign in on the phone with that one and use the other only in the mail application.
The only problem will be moving all my contacts from one account to the other...

HTC have taken a lot of the ideas from this site and implemented it in the sense ui, Customising the phone is fun and really easy, the only thing I'm unhappy with is being unable to get my Hotmail, and I don't really want it forwarded to my gmail.

Correct me if wrong, but you can always create a new dummy gmail account, forward your mail to that, and set in the gmail website that your 'identity mail address' (from address AND reply-to) is your hotmail address.
that way other people will not notice you use gmail to retrieve it (unless they look in the headers). Thing is you can't manage your hotmail account that way (delete / move / mark as read your mail)

that way other people will not notice you use gmail to retrieve it (unless they look in the headers). Thing is you can't manage your hotmail account that way (delete / move / mark as read your mail)
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
Funnily I got hotmail working through the standard email app, it doesn't push the email but you can set the frequency at which it syncs, so it's good enough.
Also while using the hero i'v noticed that some times the phone doesn't respond after unlocking and it takes a couple of seconds to respond to your touch.
got mine this morning
only just got home to play with it.....
must say it really "feels"like a nice phone....time to play now
