Nothing to gain here except idle curiosity.
For connecting to the Internet, be that to have my mail forwarded, having programs update their information or just general surfing ~ which method do you use to connect?
Myself, even though at home I could quite easily connect to my home network or at work use the Hospital's server, I still prefer to use my Mobile Account [T-Mobile in my case].
However, I notice in several other topics that members mention they use wireless as opposed to their sim card's network.
Is there a particular reason in changing from one to the other?
I personally do not have a valid reason to opt in and out of different connection methods and simply let the machine connect to the phone network whenever it wants.
So... there's my curiosity released. Would anyone wish to share their method of choice!

I'm connected to the internet via HSDPA 24/7. Only if I need sth really fast I use my W-LAN connection.
I use HSDPA/3G when im outside. When im at home i use wifi/w-lan.
At street or office I'm connected to the internet via HSDPA, at home via Wifi or usb.
Wifi at home. HSDPA outside.
But HSDPA seems to never want to switch off even though I have a good wifi connection. Urgh.

The combination HSDPA + O² + germany = Not stable
Haven´t you noticed these HSDPA lags? They aren´t the result of bad connection, they are the result of line drop or as O² called it - sleeping connection. I have confirmations from many major german cities.

I know that, but I encounter these lags only in a few areas. Where I usually go I don't have any problems at all with HSDPA. In fact I had more problems with HSDPA on my old Hermes than on my new Blackstone.

I don't know. It's a bit annoying as I don't want the HSDPA on when I am using Wifi.

HSDPA is automatically off when u turn on wifi. i think u misunderstand sumthing.
On most networks HSDPA never disconnects, so if you then go and connect to wifi the HSDPA will remain connected, just unused. You can check this with the HD's title bar icons.
Doesn't make any difference though, HSDPA being "connected" means nothing really. It's little different from your phone being on and registered to the mobile network.
Oh! thx for the info. I thought it disconnect automatically.
BTW, if u tap on the title bar as u said, u can disconnect the HSDPA directly from there!
I use Edge all the time since I'm on T-Mobile USA. In fact, I'm posting this message via Edge while I'm waiting to renew my license. I only use WiFi when I have to d/l any files. I'm pretty happy with Edge speeds where I live, commute and work.

Hmm. Thanks for that. I just don't want it to try and be clever and increase my wifi speed by using a bit of HSDPA on the side (and hence using up my data quota).

Seems like when i answer the phone my GPRS connection is cut off. Is there any way around this?
My understanding is you get one channel. If you're not using the phone it's good for data, but it disconnects data to free the channel up for voice. I read somewhere that the network and technology, in some places, supports concurency but I've never seen it happen that way.

due to the way in which GSM operates most networks prefer not to allow simultanious connections.. resulting in your packet data connection being disconnected...
with 3G (wcdma) you can speak on the phone and surf the net no problems....
roll on the hermes!!
im sure this is probably a stupid question, but should i just use my 3G at all times? i downloaded wifisync so it automatically connects to a wifi when in range, but which is faster? I also have a high speed internet connection at home which is 54mbps, so if i connect to that wifi... will it be faster than the regular 3G service?

Yes, your wifi will be faster than the 3G. It's really your preference.
oh ic... but since i have wifisync running, whenever i dont have a wifi it will be disabled so then ill have my 3G running....correct?
correct
The G1 can determine if you have Wifi/G3/E/G in your area and switches between the fastest possible method. For wich it has access parameters
3G is usually a bigger drain on your battery, since your phone's signal has to go farther than it would for Wifi. Wifi is extremely localized compared to 3G, and takes less effort for the phone to connect and communicate with wifi.

I've always found the opposite to be true. Wifi always kills my battery way faster than 3G.
wi-fi kills my battery more than 3g if the wi-fi is on and not connected (scanning for network), but if the wi-fi IS connected it seems to drain slower than the 3g
How do you get online on your X1?
I use WiFi connectivity.
I use wifi pretty rarely (even though its available at home and in the office) ...have an unlimited data plan so its 3G/HSDPA all the way for me
Can I suggest a POLL format for this thread?
Would allow people to click their response, and you to see & track proportions (and the rest of us interested parties too!)
Data plan only (3G/HSDPA/GPRS)
WIFI only
Mix of data plan & WIFI
Neither / Only use data rarely
Haha, I did post a poll but it didn't show up. I'll try it again.
i have unlimited data and wifi hot spots with my tarrif but as yet havent used a hot spot lol i use use the data tho its abit slow as 3g coverage is poor where i live
I put 3G and Wifi
Most of the time I'm using HSDPA, but do sometimes drop back to EDGE.
Wi-Fi only ftw !!!!!!!!!! Wi-Fi is basically available anywhere these days. Why bother paying for something you could get for free? I get that there are situations like emergencies and the like, but still, free of charge forever.
P.S. When I saw that poll I was like:

I heard that if your 3G Connection drops you use EDGE for free.
I also heard that you can also order an EDGE data plan but you are blocked from 3G Data plan.
But someone should clarify this for me.

Depends on the country/carrier.
But i've only seen the 3G icon about twice :S
Unlimited AT&T 3G/HSPDA ($15/month) plus WI-FI where available, mostly at home.
Does anybody know how to disable automatic internet connecting?
I mean, when i don't want anything from the internet, X1 is always trying' to connect to the internet. where is that option like: "disable automatic connecting" or somethink like that... it drives me crazy....

Start Menu > Settings > Connections > Connections > manage existing connections > tap and hold all the connections you see > tap on delete.
Done...if you can't do this...shame on society
Now you can use Wi-Fi without worrying about accidental 3G or media.net or EDGE access.
I sometimes use active sync, but if it's plugged into my laptop, there's not much of need for me to use internet on the X1.
I sometimes use WiFi at home and work, but the same thing - I can use my laptop or PC for the net, don't need it on the X1 much.
I have a data plan, but live in a roaming area, so limit my carrier usage around here. The signal isn't the best and the phone changes between 3G & EDGE automatically. When I head to the city it's HSDPA
Hi!
Is there a way to automatically disconnect UMTS/HSDPA data connections when using WLAN?

You realize "HSDPA" IS "UMTS", right?
Also, what's with everyone buzz wording "HSDPA"? You realize the HD2 supports just plain "HSPA", which is what you get when both "HSDPA" and "HSUPA" are implemented?

Very helpful post Spike15. I'm sure he really appreciated that. Bravo.
But you're wrong. HSDPA is NOT the same thing as UTMS. They use the same "airwaves" but are very different protocols.
Anyway, I'm not interested in discussing this with you as there is more than enough information about this on the internet. I just thought you were rude to the OP and you deserved to have it pointed out that you were wrong.
dadaniel - look for the "Touch X add 3G commmanager" cab on the cabs link in my signature. It doesn't automatically turn 3G on and off, but it allows you to do so from the Comm Manager screen. If that's where you turn your Wifi on and off, then I guess it's only 1 more click to achieve what you want.
Hope this helps

"Therefore High Speed Packet Downlink Access (HSDPA) and Enhanced Dedicated Channel (E-DCH) have been introduced as new features of UMTS for Downlink and Uplink in UMTS Release 5 and Release 6, respectively."
I think it's you who is wrong...UMTS is a superset of HSPA, and therefore saying "UMTS/HSDPA" is redundant.

True, but does it actually disconnect any 3G connections, or do they just remain idle?
im pretty sure they disconnect completely.
if you notice... after a session browsing over a WLAN,... once you switch wi fi off and say, open opera, the device reconnects its data session.
This has been the case on windows mobile devices since as long as i can remember.

Not exactly - WMs behaviour is so TOTALLY RANDOM when it comes to multi-homing.
When u have phone disabled (aka no pin entered) or off, and Wifi enabled and surf,u run over Wifi. When u turn then on phone, 3G will NOT connect automatically. Thank God.
When u have phone enabled and Wifi off then start opera and surf then turn wifi on, its unpredictable what happens (u can debug using webservices showing ur ip).
when u have phone enabled and then enable wifi, it also WILL AUTOMATICALLY start 3g connect. No matter if progs are open or not. I guess this is due to Networkmanager making a DHCP request broadcast over all interfaces foolishly.
Does anyone have a problem with internet connection when connected on 3G with weak signal?
It seems that phone prefers 3G even when signal is so low that internet just doesn't work. I had to turn it off and my internet connection now always work, but EDGE is as fast as I can go. It's really annoying.
I noticed it, but when i try to change signal manually (##634# and *#2263#) i see that Edge signal is low as 3G, so i think it is not a problem.
I use wifi for internet but I have that problem at my house, 3G is very weak and it only works in a couple rooms. Can't text in other rooms unless it's on edge but it always tries to connect to 3G.
I had to use Samsung Tools to enable the 3G switch in settings. I turn it off when I'm at home and so far it has been working great.
