Adapting a Brodit Holder - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

Hi,
I just got a used Kaiser off ebay. It arrived today. It is a replacement for my Hermes.
My Kaiser came with a brodit passive car mount. It seems to hold the kaiser loosely and allows it to move back and forth a little - i can't see the product code as its attached to a brodit articulated arm thingy. My Hermes is a perfect fit in this holder.
I have a brodit active mount for my Hermes that the hermes fits perfectly but the kaiser also fits into it with exactly the same amount of play as in the kaiser holder that it came with. I have read other threads on here with people saying that the kaiser brodit mount leaves an amount of space behind the unit. Do i have two hermes mounts or are the units brodit sell exactly the same? My only issue with using the active mount for the kaiser is htat the plug does not line up correctly.
i was thinking about getting a Kaiser active mount but am now thinking i may as well adapt the hermes one i have instead of shelling out for the proper Kaiser one if it is going to be exactly the same holder.
anyone done this?
i simply want to re-align the miniUSB (which looks glued on) so that it lines up with the socket on the Kaiser. i was wondering if i can remove it without breaking it and what type of glue ot use to stick it back on?
i was also going to stick some felt or other soft material to the back of the holder to help steady the unit and take pressure of the plug/socket.
i hope i have explained all this clearly enough... seems to be an awful lot of "kaiser one", "hermes one".... let me know if i need to clarify anything.
any help appreciated.

i prised off the usb connector by using a pairing knife. apply enough pressure and rock the blade until the blade is around 1/3 of an inch in and then twist the blade to 'pop' the usb connector off.
I then seated the kaiser in the holder, inserted the usb connector, checked over th fit and then seperated it all again.
Leaving the PDA in the holder i applied superglue to both the usb connector and the area of the holder onto which the connect would sit.
Then inserting the connector into the PDA in-situ, applied pressure to the connector until the glue cured.
Hey presto.... £40 saved!
it can be a bit fiddly to get the Kaiser seated properly in the modified Hermes holder but i heard the official Kaiser one was no different!.
Hope this is a help to someone.

Brodit from Proclip - for those who want to know.

Hi....
Received the active holder from Proclip.
Here's my take on it:
My car is one of those really unpopular here in the US way back then. It's a Nissan NX2000. Production of the car was from 1991-1993.
On the website, the car isn't even listed. Luckily I knew that the same car is called 100NX in Europe and started searching for it. Found the part number and called up Prokit USA and they said that they have the part number in stock. Go figure. Anyway, ordered it Friday, Dec 16th and received it today.
The vent clip is made of strong plastic. In order for the clip to stay on in my car, I'm going to have to get some adhesive tape and stick the bottom part of the clip. Will probably get some of the velcro from 3m that is double sided and easily removable (by pulling it).
The reason you need to have adhesive at the bottom is because the vent clip needs to be pulled down for the plastic hook to stay in the vent.
The active holder looks pretty good too. There's a place for the mini USB when the Universal is not in there. When you get in the car, place the universal in the holder, remove the mini usb from it's position in the cradle and plug it in.
The holder is plastic and I do not think it will scratch the unit at all. Then again, I only have it for one day. I doubt that with the proporta alu case that I'm getting, I'll be able to fit the whole thing in there. So removing it from the case will have to be a regular thing for me.
Experience from driving with the unit in the cradle.
I went ahead and placed a avi file in the card just to test it out while I'm driving. In the afternoon, while driving, the screen is not very visible because of glare (and the way the Universal is positioned). Played around with the position but couldn't get rid of most of the glare.
My car is also lowered, hence a lot of bounces. But the cradle did it's job. There was no worry about the Universal dropping from the cradle or the vent.
Here's another thing to consider. I plug the universal to my radio (has an aux input) and I hear a lot of static while the engine is on. In fact, the static is in tune with the engine...meaning when I rev more, the static has a higher pitch. Wondering if it's the phone or I need to ground my car better.
Anyway, I'll be here till the end of the week on and off. If any of you have any questions, I'll be happy to answer them. As for pics, no can do. Don't have a digital camera and the one on the universal really sucks.
You'll need a (i think its called) ground loop. You would see this quite often on computer cables especially USB. The cable is looped around a core to sheild from interference. For sure you'll find it in Radio Shack.
Hmmm....didn't know such a product exist.
So, I need to get a ground loop isolator for the audio cable from the Universal to the Car Radio?
Or is it a USB ground loop cable that I need?
Hi Modem Man
Glad your gear arrived and you like it,
Sorry I couldnt help this time, easier shipping from internally in the USA I guess,
Cheers again
Bryson
zerimar - Thanks for the advise. Tested it out this morning and it works great! No more engine hum!
bryson - I'm glad you're around to answer all the questions concerning the Brodits!

Hermes Mini USB

Can anyone confirm that the alignment of the mini usb on the bottom of the Kaiser is identical to the Hermes?
I see some online accessory shops are adverstising car cradles and desktop cradles from the Hermes for the Kaiser.
It'll be great if I don't have to upgrade all this fruit for once.
With regards
I'd like to have that confirmed too.. I already have a desktop cradle but I don't know if the Kaiser fits in there too... (then I can sell the hermes without the cradle)
Its the same orientation
Yup its the same orientation

Its something like that
Kaiser fits my Hermes Cradle. The mini-USB connector AND it's spacing is the same as Hermes so it fits the cradle, the back is thinner so there is not the same support as an exact fitting version but it will work until I can find a Kaiser version that charges a spare battery like this one.
Can confirm it fits the TyTN cradle - but as said before it is a little loose. I used to stab at the TyTN with a pen in its cradle just fine but need to hold the Kaiser as it rocks back a bit when you press the screen.

Right, since the back is thinner, the majority of support is comming from the USB connector. I'm being super careful with mine until a new cradle comes out, would hate to hurt that connector.
Tape or glue some folded-up paper or cardboard onto the cradle to act as a shim -- that should keep the Kaiser from rocking.

does this cradle exist?

I am looking for a desktop cradle that will hold the Tilt upright that charges and has 3.5mm out on it.
google and you'll find
Hi :
how about this cradle
http://www.boxwave.com/products/desktopcradle/htc-kaiser-desktop-cradle_2642.htm
2 out of 3 is good, but no dice. There is no 3.5mm out.
just buy a 3 in 1 to plug into the back of that charger and job done
Well, you could always use a standard Arkon windshield mount except mount it on your desktop. Then run the multiplug out of the bottom.
I would also think about two other options....
One, contact boxwave... they are pretty good about stuff like this...
Two, spend your money instead on a pair of Motorola S9 bluetooth headphones and listen to your Tilt via bluetooth... with the added benny of being able to answer your phone when it rings.
If you can get the site to work, Seidio online has one that I think will fit your need. Sync/charging plug and a 3.5 mm audio plug. I think it's US$29.95.

I tried the one from Seido and returned it. It is a generic base that is supposed to work for multiple phones and my Tilt did not sit in it well. The bottom left side of my phone did not touch the base when the phone was vertical in the charger so unless I put something under it to fill the gap the phone would Tilt to the left probably bending the USB connection.
That's good to know, I was contemplating one. I think now I will take my 3-in-one USB connector and some modeling compound and create my own.
Fund with arts and crafts. I'll let you know how it goes.
I am using the same 3 in 1 like this one >>>http://www.boxwave.com/products/desktopcradle/htc-kaiser-desktop-cradle_2642.htm
I found it on ebay with a battery for less $$ about 6 months ago.
I saw that too, the difficulty I run into is that I use a form fitting case with a belt clip stud on the back. That means that all of the "device only" cradles, like what was in the prior message, won't work. I was thinking about the Seidio because it allowed for a skin case. Now that I hear it isnt very useful, I must consider other alternatives. Has anyone had success with the Seidio cradle?
Like I mentioned, my other alternative is to make my own by form fitting some sort of modeling compound around my Kaiser with case, then embedding the 3-in-1 cable in the compound at the right angle to fit the connector, then forming it to the correct angle. Sounds like a weekend project, now I just need to find the right material to do so. Hmmmmm.

Herbert Richter holder and mounts?

Does anyone use, or have experience/testing with, the Herbert Richter range of holders and mounts?
http://www.expansys.com.au/p.aspx?i=172053 for the Touch Pro specific holder and http://www.expansys.com.au/c.aspx?t=cat&m=1057&c=115 for the full range of mounts (suction, vent, handlebar, etc) to attach the holder too.
http://www.expansys.com.au/p.aspx?i=172309 is the specific mount I am looking at (for a motorcycle) to use with the above holder.
Thanks.
Oh wow these look good and affordable. Better then the universal mount I was going to get, turns out they also make the same universal mount.
Well, I have Herbert Richter holder and mount for HTC Universal (which is a big and heavy phone) and I can say that it holds my UNI firmly and steady for a year or more... today I'm going to post office to get holder and tower arm for Touch PRO (I could use the same arm I already have and buy only a holder but we have two cars at home, so two arms are needed). I'll report this evening are they still as good as they were.
I have the HR for the Pro. But for a motorcycle i prefer a otterbox or a Ram Aquabox 3.
Photo HR Pro
I have the HR mount for the pro - plus a goose neck windscreen mount (which is great) and a vent mount (which is total cack and has broken my vents!)....

Does the phone sit in the HR mount horizontally or vertically, and is the keyboard opened or closed?
I'll answer my own question since I bought this holder. It holds the phone in a landscape mode, although most of the mounts should allow it to swivel.
Keyboard can't open.
One thing I don't like about this holder is when inserting the phone into the holder you have to drag the phone across a plastic holding clip that will likely scratch the phone.

I hold the clip open as I slide the Pro in it.
Herbert Richter Mount
I want something similar. Looks like a good idea. I wanna use mine along with Gmeter to do performance testing on my bike. I think i will zip tie it to the clip though, seeing as the launches are kinda violent.
Let me know if you get that mount. I want to know what you think of it.

Spare parts

Hi I am a newby so treat me gently, I am just about to get a Universal from a friend but it has a faulty Headphone jack after he dropped it We have tried the other fixes on here with the device thinking the headset is still plugged it but that isnt the problem the actual socket is scrap we have bridged the socket with solder so at least we can use it but we cannot use the socket at all so i am trying to locate a new socket, I have a search around and couldnt find anything so i appoligise if this has already been covered.
Thankyou in advance
Sorted the problem i have just bought another one of ebay with a busted screen so i will swop the screen over and make one good one out of the two.
