Hi all,
Havn't posted for a while but I am still here! My exec seems to be running pretty fast now, using ozVGA
Anyways, just installed 2 patched *.exe files into windows directory (Backlight.exe.0409.mui.exe and Power.exe.0409.mui.exe) but me being stupid, I forgot to make a back up of the ORIGINAL backlight.exe and power.exe (located in the Windows DIR on the phone)...
So could somebody PLEASE upload me them two files, as I really need to restore them because using ozvga is hurting my eyes at the moment!
Thank you!
Not sure if this is what you want, since they are ROM files.
They originally had Read-Only, Hidden & System attributes set, but don't know if those will survive being compressed with WinZIP.
HTH
Exactly what i needed.. but I have no such luck of getting them onto the exec! i remove the attributes and it still doesn't let me copy!! DOH! any ideas? and thank you for such a quick reply

Sorry, wait a minute... That's better just got my spare (hopefully working) brain cell out of cold storage.
Both files are shown as "ROM" files if I look at their properties in the \Windows\ folder using Resco Explorer, so, errr..... won't they already be there if you delete whatever you've currently replaced them with?
Unfortunately, neither ActiveSync Explore, nor the PDA's File Explorer appear to allow you to overwrite an existing system file on the PDA. Resco's Explorer does allow this, although you get a message saying that the world will probably end if you do. I just tried copying another program into Windows as Backlight.exe. Then deleted my program, and the original was available again. But as mentioned, not posible with File Explorer, nor ActiveSync Explore.
Ok, simply by deleting the two files restored the default versions and fixed my problem.
Thanks for your advice, astage.

link not working .
Sorry if this has been covered, looked but couldn't find anything detailed enough.
I'd like to change two of the files in the "windows" directory, specifically the phone app background files. (Using OzVGA they're currently not large enough).
I've made two new .bmps but cant copy over the original files (Bckgnd_Land.bmp & Bckgnd_Port.bmp) because they have the "Read-Only" and "System" attributes set. I can't change these attributes in File Explorer on the Universal, nor from within WinXPHome's Explorer while the device is connected. (I can see the attributes, but they're shaded and inaccessible).
Do I need another file explorer or something?? I think i saw a post where somene else had done something similar, but now can't find that post!!!
yes, use Resco Explorer or Total Commander
Please note that those files are in ROM, so you are not really overwriting them. You merely bend the pointer. As soon as you delete your own creation the old file handle is restored.

So what you're saying is that I can't alter these files??
Installed Total Commander and although it appears to have the ability to change the attributes... it can't. I assume that's because they're in Rom?
Hello everybody
I searched 10 times this forum but i could not find it
IS there a way to change animated wait cursor ?? in HTC wizard ??
I found this program http://www.pocketgear.com/software_detail.asp?id=14638&associateid=162
but i don't think it will work with WM5
thanks,
DNO
yes there is a way. the icon is in a dll. so you need a dll editor. there´s a topic here somewhere in the forum. i read it the other day. just can´t remember where. Just look for dll editor or something like that. i think vijay555 changed his once to a hamster. just keep looking.
Yes there sure is.
It is in GWES.EXE and can be edited using a resource editor (google for Resource Hacker)
There are 16 bitmaps in the Bitmap section, running from 1024 to 1039 for QVGA and from 1040 to 1055 for VGA.
QVGA resolution in 32x32, VGA is 44x44
So change them with the resource editor and copy back GWES.EXE to
your device.
Cheers
thanks tweakradje
got it and I sure knwo how to change pics in dll, and exe
thank you very much
I found only gwes.exe.0409.mui in /windows

I think you need to extract it from a ROM.
the file gwes.exe does exist. i can see it if i´m in resco file explorer. but i can´t copy it. i always get an encryption error. and if i go through activsync i can´t see it. then i only see the one you see. with the 0409 on it.

Been looking into this for a while here, but have had no luck in WM5. I had this great Cartman eating Cheesy-Poofs animation in WM2003 that was so much fun.
Both "gwes.exe.0409.mui" and "gwes.exe" contain the icons that make up the animation for the busy/wait cursor.
Using Resource Hacker I made the change for those 16 icons in gwes.exe.0409.mui. Finally got it to overwrite the existing file in the /windows folder by creating a cab that replaced it after a restart. Unfortunately, even though the new file is now where the old one was, I'm still getting the old animation.
Did the same with gwes.exe using Resource Hacker, but for the life of me, I cannot find anyway of overwriting the file on my PPC. When I tried to overwrite by using the cab file install method, I get a message that says the install was unsuccessful because I didn't have permission to modify the file. I wish there were some way to overwrite the file while it was resetting, or even after a hard reset. I spent quite a bit of time trying to find a way to replace it via the Kitchen Rom avenue, but I couldn't do it.
Any ideas?
Hi,
You only need to replace \windows\gwes.exe.0409.mui in this case (rename the old one first) Then after a soft reset the new animation will show.
Mui must be activated though. Check
HKLM\MUI
Enable dword 0x1
Syslang dword 0x409
Cheers
Thanks tweakradje for the tip to rename gwes.exe.0409.mui first. I removed the read-only and system attributes, then renamed it to .old and it accepted that! Then copied my new file over, and I've got my Cartman back!! Wahooo!
Nice to hear. Can you share it here?
I am always interested.
Cheers

I did that and was able to replace the file with the new one checked the reg settings, I also removed the gwes.exe.0409.old file and I still get the old animation. am I missing something?
do I need to edit the gwes.exe file too?
Hi,
Check in your registry if the MUI values are present and that SysLang is set to 0x409. Of course the file must be in \windows.
No need to change gwes.exe if MUI is working.
Cheers

i would post the original, if only i could copy it anywhere outside windows folder... :/
Please, how to rename the gwes.exe.040C.mui.
I try under explorer and Resco explore, I can't, when I change properties of files, it came back to system and read only.
Thx.

Seems that with my WM5 it does not want to work with the Reg OK and the MUI files changed. It is still going with the icons in GWES.EXE and I cannot copy it from my device to change those icons and EVEN if I could, I would have to copy it back!
Any ideas how to copy over my GWES.EXE?
How to install the .xml files bundled in the cabs.rar?? I do not know how to make the extrom run automatically after the HR so i have to install each cab file 1 by 1, can anyone help??
Use the ones in cabs2. Also make sure you know what are those .xml for (they are replaced with .cab (s) in cabs2)
xml files are a typicaly a formatted text file like html
not really binary exe programs files
some programs use xml files to store settings and data
maybe they need to be in a location the program in question
will look for them

use HTCustom1.7.cab
yup...
I am having the same issue. I keep seeing these .xml files. I am not a computer guru lol. Do I cut and paste it somewhere on my phone or what? I am so lost please help.
Same thing here on my side mixtape_butcha. I'm subscibed in an Universal forum and have to install a USB switch which is a folder containing an xml file. I asked many time a guide on how to use it but nothing came back.
If you happen to know how to handle it, let me know. I'l do the same with you.
bests

first of all it is nice that you looked up a matching post yourself and obviously searched for a solution there, but...
if i get your problem right, it doesn't match the ones before. they were talking about .xml files that came with a cab file and stored the settings on how to install and execute.
you, however, talk about a subscribtion to a thread, meaning your xml file is an RSS feed, for which you need a special reader, since PIE is not a proper desktop browser and therefore does not handle feeds. but there is a lot of software out there to handle rss feeds. i personally use spb online 1.2, but there is also freeware, like this: http://www.dewantoro.net/search/pda+rss+reader+cab
i don't get the point with the usb switch though, maybe if that didn't solve your problem you should post further details about that issue and maybe post filenames or screenshots so we all know exactly what you are about to do.
You need not worry to install xml file if it comes with a cab. Cab file should be designed to use it automatically. xml files store usually configurable settings, it may be worth opening those files using any text editor like note pad or even IE to check the contents, that may help if any change is needed. But 99% chances are that you need not do any thing with those xml files.
I have found some people run in to this problem when they download a .cab file from the internet and once downloaded it is a .rar so you extract the .rar to find NOT .cab but .xml
Here is more about it and how to fix it.

I am trying to install a game on my MDA Vario IV , it does have .xml file. But no .cab files , only .000 file , .002 , .003 , and .004 files. How do i install this game then ? The installer is the .xml file.
EDIT : Nvm , fixed it , i needed not the files within the .cab file , but just the .cab file itself to extract in on my mobile.

Couple of things:
You are in the wrong subforum. This section is for the Blue Angel. You should look for the Blackstone (aka Touch HD) section.
Now, the file that you opened is a cab file. You don't need to extract the contents of a cab file. Just copy it to your device and click on it one. The cab will install everything, including the settings in the xml.
Good luck!

Hello,
I am looking for the manila file that contains the dutch translation of the calendar text. Right now I see IDS_TOMORROW on the touchflow3d calendar while it should say "Morgen". I have found a thread about the german manila file, but not the dutch one. Does anyone know which file I need to edit to add this translation?
Edit: ok, found the file and fixed the translation. You need to add the following:
<trans-unit id="IDS_TOMORROW">
<source>Morgen</source>
</trans-unit>
to the file /windows/7a56f756_manila
David
I also have the IDS_TOMORROW problem but I cant file the "7a56f756_manila" file in the "file /windows/" folder.
Is it the wrong file?

Nope, it is the right one. Are you using Resco explorer? you might have Resco set to hide hidden or rom files. Change that in the settings of resco and you will see the file.
David
What is the right way to change the file?
I can't get it opened...
thanks
Why dont you just change the language of the TFLO3d.
I run a german rom and an English tflo3d
Dimond TF3D Config did that for me.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=405749
I will add it to wiki
Hi,
My TF3D is already Dutch, but for calendar appointments for tomorrow (in Dutch, tomorrow = "morgen"), it displays IDS_TOMORROW.

It took me a while to get it done as well. The best way to do it is to get the file on your desktop system, edit it, and then replace the original. You will probably have to do that through the SD. First copy the file to the SD card, then drag it to your desktop. Edit it. Save it back to SD card and then using resco file explorer replace the original file.
If you can't get it done, let me know, I can upload my manila file so you can replace the original one.
David
thanks a lot !
it worked
Do you know what is the file for Spanish?
Thanks
