Iplayer - XPERIA X1 General

hi this is my first post so please be gentle.
right looking around the net i stumbeled across this http://bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/iplayer.wgz its basically the Nokia Installer for the Iplayer and ive managed to extract the files from it as it just a renamed .zip file. the file contains Java which could be modified to run on a windows device I think? i thought i would post my findings and im sorry if this has been posted before, i did a quick search and the forum and couldnt find this.

I like the idea if we could modify this and make a panel out of the iPlayer

http://beebhack.wikia.com/wiki/Beebhack

thanks for that at45, but which one should i d/l?

Doesn't beebHack only allow you to download the content thats meant for the iPhone (H264 encoded)? There are no streaming options yet but you can download anything on a PC and then watch on your X1.

If you can navigate through the various XML files you should be able to find the N96 stream, however I can't even get the first file to open anymore.
Another possible option would be to change the UserAgent of Opera to the one of the Wii and then view the Flash 9 stream.
The only problem I have is that I can't even get YouTube to work in Opera (black/green bars) so I can't test it.

Success! (sort off).
I managed to trick the iPlayer into thinking I'm a Nintendo Wii
useragent: Opera/9.10 (Nintendo Wii; U; ; 1621; en)
however the flash file never played, just the spining bit in the middle.
However I worked my way through the XML files and have pulled out the N96 wifi stream for last nights Buzzcocks.
You should be able to run it in Streaming Media
rtsp://3gp-acl.bbc.co.uk:554/3gpclip/iPlayer/wifi_5273445027664925946.3gp
(note this link will stop working on the 4th Dec).
If I get a chance over the weekend, I might build a webpage which will auto link to the Real stream.

thats a pretty neat idea...

Solved And Working
SOLVED AND WORKING
After spending all morning working on a script to strip out the list of shows and creating a nice gui, I discovered the really really easy way whilst scanning some javascript code.
The iPlayer uses a UserAgent lookup to work out which version to display. eg iPhone, N96 or bugger off, however they have now added support for the Samsung I900.
All you need to do is place this into your UserAgent in Opera.
Code:
sgh-i900
These are the steps for an X1i Vodafone UK Branded
Run Opera
In the address bar enter opera:config (no http://)
Scroll down to User Prefs and click
Scroll down to Customer User-Agent and at the end of the pre-filled text add sgh-i900
Scroll down some more and press Save. You will get a prompt which suggests you may need to reset the phone, but for this you don't.
Now point your browser to http://www.bbc.co.uk/mobile/iplayer/ and enjoy.
The quality isn't exactly great on a WVGA screen as it's been built for the Nokia N96. According to beebhack these are the specs
Access Method: RTSP streaming
Video Codec: H.264
Video Resolution: 320 x 176
Video Bitrate: 128 kbps
Audio Codec: AAC
Audio Bitrate: 64 kbps
Overall Bitrate: 192 kbps
ps if you get a BBC 502 error, don't worry. Looks like they are playing about with the site themselves. Just try again later.

wow thankyou I can confirm it works flawessly! I agree the quality isnt that great but I find the flash type resolution bearable. However I just opened a couple episodes of top gear and they open in the streaming media program (is this right?). also i noticed that a lot of frames are being skipped which pretty much makes it impossible to watch, as every other sentance is cut out im guessing about 20 frames dropped every two seconds. anyone else seeing this?

Yup it runs in the HTC streamed app. The quality isn't great, but hopefully the BBC will play about a bit more with the codecs.

Nice. But surely it's the iPhone stream we want access to?

all i get when i go to that site is please switch to wifi??

That's because the Beeb don't want you complaining when your network bill you at £2/mb for watching Top Gear.
Have noticed that it's working fine with my Vodafone R2A rom over wifi and i've made no changes to opera:config or the registry

Ok guys i need some help with this. I don't get what i have to do. Do i have to do something with that file .wgz on the first page? When i enter the settings in the opera:config and then point it to bcc i get the "phone not supported message"????????????????????

Nope, there is no need for any files to be downloaded.
The iPlayer is now using php and User-Agent lookups.
Visit www.whatsmyuseragent.com (on the X1) and report back with what it says yours is.

Um...the user agent is "sgh-i900". I typed it again and it works now but when i get to the page and i click on a video i get:
1 - "Sorry, this programme is currently unavailable to stream"
or
2 - The streaming media app opens and says connecting. After a couple of minutes it says "unable to connect".

TCMP Wifi playback.

Has anyone managed to get a standard divx type format playing without having to buffer over wifi ?
Playing like a 700mb divx, avi or whatever it will stop to buffer every minute or so. Is there any way to play with any of the buffer settings to get it to play a file back without any buffering ?
I know I can convert the files to ppc and they would play fine but I was just wondering if there was a way to avoid this.
+1 Yeah, I would love to know this one. Is there any way to get a player to load a sufficient amount into memory (SD, storage) to play smoothly? I am using Resco Explorer 2005 and TCPMP.
No answer here, but I'd like to know this too! I tried to watch something over WiFi and it was shocking. Damn... that... spinning... pie... chart... thing!
I'm kinda surprise..certain wmv files I've played does not have any buffer..
But i've compared 2 video in Mpeg and Wmv format. the Wmv format (320X240 pixel, bit rate 234kbps,16bit,2(stereo) audi sample rate 32Khz) can play the movie smoothly.Perhaps we should look into the size and format or the bitrate?Sorry I'm not a pro in this..
Spooling via VLC (Macintosh) to TCPMP over WiFi works smoothly without buffering on all the files i have tried. For those formats not supported you can transcode the video and audio and set the bit-rate at whatever you want.
Been playing with the settings, and while the video only is a little choppy on higher bitrate stuff with fast movement, I'm no longer experiencing the dreaded piechart for most stuff.
Could not tell you which of my settings are affecting it though, but theoretically, how can the wifi network be the weak link? Even the slower version of wifi should be able to stream this amount of data....?
Of whats in my vid folder right now, I'm experiencing the following:
Surface - not full 24fps via wireless, but extremely watchable, no piechart
xvid - 624x352 - 1104kb/s, 128kb/s audio
Sleeper Cell - not full fps but again extremely watchable, no piechart
xvid - 624x352 - 865kb/s, 131kb/s audio
Powaqqatsi - awful jerky quality. No piechart, but the video freezes every couple of secs, while audio continues. Unwatchable
divx5 - 592x320 - 1654kb/s, 448kb/s audio
Hidden Fortress - Works perfectly due to low bitrate/screensize, either in 100% mode or fit-screen mode - tcpmp doesn't do subtitles though, argh!!
xvid - 416x176 - 509kb/s, 192kb/s audio
Intoxicated - Works well enough in 100% or fit-screen mode - got one piechart though
xvid - 512x288 - 946kb/s, 115kb/s audio
Used GSpot to find out bitrate etc, highly recommend it.
Indeed, 802.11b at feeble rate SHOULD be able to handle it. It can make a difference if the hard-disk on the network PC is fragmented.
I would defragment mine, but they are too full so it'd take hours... doh!

Good tip - mine WILL be highly fragmented, I let it get near full a few times.
Will run it overnight, see if it improves matters.
Still found it had to buffer even when switching the audio to mono and reducing the video quality to low.
There is obviously a bottle neck somewhere on the universal. I had this problem on the wizard but the impression I got was it was down to the cpu. I thought the Uni may have been okay but its just the same.
Im assuming maybe the cpu is doing so much in tcmp to decode the file, there isnt enough time left to actually get the wifi running smooth enough.
Has anyone tried to run a file of large divx size from a memory card to see if its even an issue from there ?

Will do that right now with powaqqatsi, the highest bitrate one from my list above.
EDIT: Works perfectly at 100% and fit-screen mode. Smooth as a babys bum, even fast moving stuff.
Processor ain't the bottleneck as such...

Yup agree with you,I've tried a large divx size movie and it play the move smoothly on SD card
So maybe the answer is the tcmp streaming ? Having said that its the same with webpages. They dont load anywhere near as quick as on a desktop so for me even b wifi isnt getting anywhere near to capacity never mind bringing g into the mix.
Hello all first post on forum.
I need some feedback on this:-
I have changed the TCPMP Player settings as follows
Normal Buffer size 49984KB
Preload at underrun 200%
I still get the video to stop with pie chart appearing but its less frequent but the stop is a bit longer. It’s a bit better but not perfect maybe someone can try some other numbers and combinations. For me these are the best I could get.
Could someone give me some tips as to how i can stream video's on my PC to my jasjar.
I have a Linksys WAG54G router.
Appreciate it.
Doc:
You have to make the files on the host pc 'shared' (right click> properties > sharing.. on windows xp). Once youve done that, use a file explorer program such as Resco File Explorer to access the host PC from your phone via your wifi network. Browse to the file you want, then tell it to play!
Hi Richard,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I have already done what you have said. But when i try to map a drive through resco explorer,i get an error saying "No computer found in the network. Check your network card or modify settings to specify your network subsets"
What do you suppose i am doing wrong?
Thanks.
Itll be an issue with the way windows manages networks... check settings such as the workgroup/domain you are on (My computer > Computer name)
Just fiddle around until it works
Ummm, sorry if i am sounding thick Richard.
I haven't setup any workgroup or domain. This is my home wireless network and i am the only one using it. My computer name is "Universal". When i try to map a network drive through resco explorer, it doesn't even see a computer with that name.
What do you think?
Dont worry :-D
The only reason I know a lot about wireless networks is that mine is always breaking ;p
Workgroups and domains are silly little things the Microsoft likes you to organise your computers on a network into. Regardless of the fact that you only have one, that one PC still needs to be grouped, so old Bill is happy. I havent the foggiest what the practical differences are between workgroups and domains, but I know you may only be in one of the two at once. Check on the My computer page I mentioned, see if anything looks awry. Failing that, tick/untick boxes until it works....
Hi again Richard,
Well, i finally got my jasjar to see my computer through resco file explorer.
NEW PROBLEM!!!
When i click on the share button, i get the following error:
"Cannot map network path. Network resource cannot be found or you do not have a permission to access the network. Contact your network administrator".
All firewalls are off. I dont know what is blocking it. Suggestions?

Shift No Longer Needed!

i was thinking of a getting a shift as i am desperate to be able to play p2p streams via my hsdpa connection , so i can watch LIVE football on my AMEO from sopcast and other p2p streaming tv progs.
This morning I finally CRACKED it! and am now watching
Full screen SOPCAST TV on my AMEO
This means I can watch literally EVERY FOOTBALL match ANYWHERE on my AMEO for FREE!
this may be old news but im amazed.
if you want to know how i will post details
watching football for a bit to get it work is cooooooool...
tell me more!!!!!
dont beat around the bush c'mon hit us with the details!
okay heres how its done
First u must have an unlimited HSDPA account or you are gonna spend loads of dosh
progs needed for full control fom anywhere
Logmein - free version (pc remote control app)
VLC player (pc app)
Sopcast 1.1.2 (pc App)
TCPMP 0.81 (its the only version that plays video great for me, u may prefer other versions)
obviously you need BB connection on your home pc
1. install logmein and create an account you can then log into your pc remotely (change resolution to 640X480)
and you can see the whole of your screen on your athena/ameo.htc7500 etc
install all of the above apps
2.In your Ameo make sure that TCPMP is your choice for all video types i.e. wmv playback etc so it auto runs any video
3. open media player , select open URL and under network options select wifi/Lan (1.0mbps or faster) and tick detect connection speed and then close
4. start sopcast on your pc and get a channel going in the standalone player not the web based player
5.start VLC
6. once the channel has started right click on the player screen and select properties
7. highlight and copy the location http://xxxxxxxxxx etc
8. click File- open network stream on vlc player
9.select HTTP/HHTPS/FTP/MMS and paste the location into the URL box
10. the stream should now start to play in vlc (prob quicker than sopcast!)
11.click file again on VLC and select WIZARD
12. make sure stream to network is slected and click next
13.select Existing play item and highlight the location name in the box and click next
14.Select HTTP and leave the box below blank press next
15.Leave on ASF and click next
16. type 1 or 2 or leave blank it may or may not matter
17.now click finish
VLC player should shrink and in the bottom box it should have a timer that doesnt move and say transcoding
click view and check messages if its BLANK your in business.
Now open up internet explorer in your ameo
and type
mms://your pc's ip address:8080 press go
TCPMP player should automatically start and start playing the stream.
If you are in portrait mode when you hear some sound press the button to change to landscape and TCPMP should be playing back whatever you Channel you selected.
VOILA!
Logmein like all remote software allows you to set this all up from your PC remotely
have fun FOOTY HERE I COME!!
Can anyone confirm that this works?
Also, is it better/worse than a Slinbox type config, aside from the advantage of not requiring a separate cable/tv box?

An easier way to do this is (taken from the Orb website not my work and it works great is)
I managed to get SopCast and pplive streaming on my cell through Orb. It's probably similar with the other p2p streaming softwares.
'Here's how to do it:
1. Open SopCast on a channel.
2. Add the Custom Channel in Orb. For that, go the the TV application, select the Internet TV/favorite channels menu, and click the Add Custom action next to the play button. Enter SopCast for the name and http://127.0.0.1:8902/tv.asf for the URL (this URL may be different for you if you changed the default ports options in SopCast)
3. You can now stream this channel via Orb from the Internet TV menu.
With pplive, the URL to add depends on the channel you select, to find it, click on the "open in external Windows Media Player icon" once the channel play, and look at the URL of the playing item, it will look like http://127.0.0.1:8888 '
it does pause now and then but you can get a good long watch much of the time depending on the channel
this is down to the way TCPMP player handles streams more than the ORB software
i can stream this while on evdo, but not on wifi, can i configure the wifi tho stream this?

should be the same, i have hsdpa and havent tried wifi so i cant say for sure , but why not?
might be to do with IP addresses, if u are at using wifi maybe your ip address is different
Question for spacecat, or anyone else who can help:
I have an ameo too, and have tried the two ways that you have mentioned of viewing sopcast i.e. through VLC and ORB. Have found the following:
1) via ORB: Managed to get the stream to the ameo displayed via TCPMP but the video was very choppy and frankly unwatchable (any particular settings I should be aware of?)
2) via VLC: Keep getting the error mms: protocol not supported (do I need a particular plugin for TCPMP?)
Which option gives better quality of steam?
Thanks in advance

you need the WM5 WMV9 codecs the WM6 codecs you currently have do not work properly !
basically unzip the attached files and bung em in your windows folder !
oh and if your stationary you can get away with your ORB server uploading at 320K or 400k max but 400 might have issues, if you are on the move (train for example) 160K is about your limit but experiment, and be mindful of your home broadbands max up speed, im on virgin 20Mb (down) so my max upload speed is 768K

Nice app, I'm trying on a square res 320x320 and while the skin is off a little, not bad just the buttons are not centered it is working.
Only played with it a little bit but it seems the USA channel Discovery is not working. Can you check if the address it correct. Other USA channels is working.
I had some problem in full screen on NBC, could be just this channel or connection.
I would like your xml file for skin to reskin this for the square resolution. Will be glad to help you out in this project.
Cant wait to try it out

Hi,
I'm working on an application to watch live TV on PocketPC. This is my first application on this platform, so development is quite slow and, for sure, not perfect. This application should work on any wm5 or wm6, QVGA or VGA device.
It contains more than 40 channels from 11 countries and has a lot of supported languages.
Here are some screen shots and a link for a beta version.
I'm waiting for your help and comments to improve Diamond TV. I'll add more channels as soon as possible (the more channels you send me, the more there will be in the application, and ... you'll have a free license key).
DiamondTV Web site: http://www.ds-info.fr/DiamondTV/

There already is a thread about that in the Diamond section, but since the application is now compatible with other devices, I've created a new one here.

Well I don't know how your program is written but some programs use a config file usually .xml this file tells where the x, y, size, height, and other parameters for text and icons or buttons and defines where they are placed.

For Coreplayer, you have to go to Menu/Tools/Preferences ... and select page 'File Associations'.

looks pretty good, especially for a first attempt. thanks for sharing.

BBCi Player

Hi peeps,
I've been wondering why the lack of posts [i know there has been an older iplayer thread] for the 'now working' BBCi Player on the Xperia?
Anyway, the BBCi Player now works in Opera flawlessly over Wifi with default browser settings.
Try it.
this has already been discussed in detail
that must make you very angry, my apologese
It doesn't work on my Opera, which is the default installation. Streaming Media is still launched instead of the video playing in the browser.

Mine doesn't even do that. Streaming Media fails to connect to anything.
Mine opens up streaming media which works over O2's gprs (which breaks their T&Cs and blows the unlimited (200mb ) download limit, but won't connect over wifi.
All I get is "server or data time out; tap play to reconnect".
I've using jack's ROM, has anyone got any other experience using other ROMs?
ITV Player
Has anyone tried the ITV player yet, its like copy of BBCiplayer, but the clips you download not stream and some you have to pay for.
I only got this working today, I'd managed to uninstall the default Opera and the Beta is not supported by iplayer.
The video isn't great, but it works and is watchable. As it's not officially supported yet, I'm hoping the quality will improve soon.
I suprised at the lack of interest too though!
The X1 is semi-supported. They announced it in the blogs, but not on the actual site.
The quality of the files is pretty poor, but then I've had my phone buffer up a few times when watching a few shows, so thats only going to get worse when they up the quality.
@Mark, I'm sure the ITV version uses Silverlight, WM11 and DRM (unless you are on about a special mobile version) which didn't work last time I tried, but then there is nothing on ITV that I would want to watch.
compared my x1 against the iphone using iplayer, watched top gear on both and the iphone blew my x1 out if the weeds! why? is the file the same on both as the quality on the iphone very very good and very smooth.
The files are completly different between the iPhone/iTouch and the X1/N96
iPhone: H.264 483 x 272 400 kbps
X1: H.264 320 x 176 128 kbps
Unfortunatly the iPhone version only works (streamed) on the iPhone, due to a small bug which the beeb spotted and exploited.
What was this bug?
Have a read of this: http://beebhack.wikia.com/wiki/IPhone_H.264_version
bbciplayer is not even worth watching at that quality on the x1, i think its time for me to swap my x1 for an iphone, iphone seems to get much better software support.
Been wasting another day testing the iPlayer stuff.
Ideally I would love to get the iPhone version streamed into CorePlayer, but I'm still no closer.
However some test results:
X1 streamed version - plays in HTC Streamed Media - 320 x 176 128 kbps, very poor quality. Fine for spoken word programmes, any action is a big no no.
Portable Download - plays in Windows Media Player - 320 x 176 475 kbps, quality is better, but res is still small. Also requires a DRM license to be downloaded to the phone. File itself can only be downloaded from the PC as the iPlayer site keeps redirecting me to the mobile version.
MP4 iPlayer Downloader - plays in CorePlayer - 483 x 272 400 kbps, quality is the best available. At present this must be downloaded on the PC first. Have tried getting the Ruby files to run on the mobile but with no luck. Should be possible for someone to port this into a WM app to download the file straight to the phone, however even on my PC a 10 mins Doctor Who Confidential took 2.5 minutes, so expect times of at least 10 minutes for a normal 30 min show if straight to mobile.
Can anyone get 5 live as one of the radio stations on Xperia?
I get all the other stations but not the one I want - 5 live.
Please help..
There is a chance it won't work whilst the Football is on due to licensing issues, although they normally play a message instead of stopping the stream from working.

The only is it worked on my Diamond only a week ago. I just brought the xperia and it doesn't work on it.
Thanks for replying!
Just loaded the iPlayer page, both Five Live and Five Live Extra are missing due to the football. I have the streams bookmarked in CorePlayer and they announce that they can't broadcast the current show.
Will be the same on all phones and even your PC.

is it normal for iplayer to be blurry???

I just got me a hd2, and really want BBC iplayer to be better... I have changed the opera config so I allows it to play, but most programs are blurry and low qaulity. I have played the same tv program(top gear) through YouTube and the quality is great.. is this the same for everyone??? is it low quality due to iplayer thinking its the HD not HD2 and sending lower grade files??? I also saw in properties its 300x175, is it just a case of waiting for the BBC to upgrade it for the hd2??? any info or help would be great thanks.
bumpty... is there nobody who watches iplayer????
its been 12 hours since you posted the topic does it really need a bump already?
have you tried the myplayer application instead?
mine is blurry as well. would be great if someone can point out what settings are needed to make it download media with higher resolutions
I have tried myplayer and it's also 300x175, not exactly great, especially compared to what it looks like on the Iphone.
Anyone got this working with higher resolution on the HD2?
It's fairly blurry, yes. The standard iPlayer resolution for mobile devices is something like 320x176. The HD2 almost certainly isn't powerful enough to play back iPlayer material intended to be played on desktop PCs. You may find that downloading the "mobile" wmv file using a desktop PC gives slightly better quality - the resolution is the same, but the bit-rate is probably higher. The best option is probably to use the myplayer application - it offers .mov downloads on some (not all) programmes which are 480x270 resolution, and with a much higher bit-rate. That should look as good as the iPhone does, at least. Note that download quality and streaming quality are very different using myplayer.

yes.
was there a need for you to reply, especially as u don't know anything about it..?
any way, thx to the peeps for the info.. looks like we will have to wait for BBC to upgrade for hd2 just strange that YouTube qaulity is so much better!

You'll have a long wait. Phones like the Touch Pro2 and Touch Diamond2 still aren't officially supported despite having been out since last April. If you expect to get better playback quality out of iPlayer on any mobile device than you can get using myplayer's download facility (which gives much better quality than streaming) then you'll have an even longer wait.
It's probably partly a rights management thing. YouTube tends to play rather fast and loose with copyright violations: stuff gets put up there and then, if someone feels that it violates their copyright, they ask YouTube to take it down. iPlayer, on the other hand, has to be much more careful: anything you download and play is supposed to expire and become unplayable within 7 days, and anything you download and don't play expires within 30 days. Enforcing this sets some limits on the video formats that iPlayer can use.
You also have to consider the iPhone's smaller resolution and physical screen size will make iPlayer content look sharper even if the HD2 was running exactly the same video, especially if you're running it in full screen on the HTC. It's one of the few drawbacks of the HD2's 480x800 display.
its better quality over wifi
I found a way to play iplayer videos on the HD2 with the same quality like being found on the Iphone (actually looks better because of the big screen), it's an off-line solution though and requires a PC.
Go here and download the application:
http://po-ru.com/projects/iplayer-downloader/
Run the application (no install needed) and open the iplayer site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer
Search for the desired show and paste the link to the programme ID field of the application.
Click Download and browse to the folder you want the file to be saved to, hit Save and the video will be saved as a .mov file with H.264 video and mp3 audio(no DRM).
To be able to play it on the HD2 simple rename the file extension from .mov to mp4, save it to your HD2 microSD card and enjoy the DRM free video in its 480x272 glory with either the HTC Video player or WMP.
Keep in mind you need to be in the UK to access the streams or at least use a server in the UK (like UKiVPN or something similar).

That's doing exactly the same thing as myplayer, I think - although I've never tried renaming the .mov downloads from myplayer to give them a .mp4 file extension. I'll have to give that a try.
Probably but with this solution you can download pretty much every video, not just the ones offered for download by the myplayer application.
In addition, myplayer doesn't display streamed content in 480x270, at least it doesn't for me.

It's a bit of a crude hack but it works. One could extract the streams from the .mov file with e.g. Yamb and remux them as .mp4 to do it properly.

Hi - going slightly OT here but.. - could you explain how you managed to get the iPayer feeds to work via myPlayer and Coreplayer on the HD2? I just can't get it to work - latest version everything (ROM 1.48, myPlayer 6th Dec, CorePlayer v1.3.6).
In fact I can't get Coreplayer to view any RSTS feeds??
(thanks)

That's strange, I am using Coreplayer with mostly standard settings, Video is set to GDI with smooth zoom always on, works without a hitch.
Do you get an error message, does CP start at all? Have you checked if the path to CP has been set properly in the Myplayer application?
If you haven't try streaming via the myplayer server and see if that makes a difference.

Through some trial & error this evening (ie. some time to kill on a train!) I solved the problem: you need to go into CorePlayer > Menu > Tools > Settings > Select Page > Network (obvious so far!) > then UNTICK "Prefer UDP streaming" = bingo.. BBC iPlayer links now work (as do RTSP streams in general)!
Now - this takes us back to the original question which I'm suspecting will be harder if not impossible to solve, at least in the short term - the poor quality of the blocky feed!
Glad to hear you got it to work. The 'prefer UDP streaming' selected doesn't really cause any trouble in my case, so go figure.
I read that Myplayer selects the lower quality stream available as it was intended to be used with older/less powerful phones in the first place.
The Wifi setting doesn't really make a difference in quality in my case.
Would be great, if the higher quality stream could be selected from within the application.

You can't stream 480x270 content using iplayer-downloader either. The 480x270 stuff is for downloads only, regardless of method.
As for "pretty much every video" if you read the small-print for iplayer-downloader you'll see this:
It won’t download every programme that’s on the iPlayer website, because they’re not always available. Sometimes, this is by design (as in the case of expensive US series like Heroes); sometimes it’s due to omission or transient problems. In addition, it can’t currently download the embedded videos that are not part of the main iPlayer offering.

I'm fairly sure it's doing exactly the same thing - impersonating an iPhone.
The two complement each other - myplayer lets you get hold of the download directly onto your phone over wifi (or, in principle, over 3G, although you'd use up your data allowance pretty fast that way!) while iplayer-downloader lets you download over your domestic ADSL connection and copy to the phone - both are potentially useful.
Oh and the renaming trick does work for stuff downloaded using myplayer as well. Thanks for that tip: playback in HTCAlbum is hugely much better than in TCPMP and noticeably better than in Coreplayer.
