I've believe I seen a how to around here somewhere about how to keep images or certain folders with images from showing up on the G1s picture viewer.
I got some pictures I dont need people seeing when they look though my pictures stored on my SD card.
I would like to be able to view them in ASTRO or something similar or when I mount my SD card to a PC. Maybe a certain app can disable certain folders?

I just put a period in front of each folder. Like from "folder" to ".folder"
and reboot. Voila! Probably won't work for apps that need to access that specific directory though.
Haha, u get the pix from the chicks 2, I c, but yea put them in a folder and put a "." in front of the folder name like binary said, and reboot

There is indeed an app that will hide files. It is called "Hide & Seek" and acts like just another Flashlight app. After launching the app you hit the Menu button three times and enter a password. Then you can "View" or hide additional files... I have found it very useful to hide content such as the pics downloaded by the "Phandroid" app which would show up in the picture viewer...
You guys are awesome and lifesavor, thanks. We need a rep system or something like other forums have.
wow, ive been looking for a way to do this without the app, never thought of putting a . in there, nice work guys
The way the app does it, is it changes the nome from "pic.jpg" to "pic.kpg.hide"
mmm

I have tried this from within Windows, but it doesnt allow me. Do you have to change the name from the phone directly?
thanks

Anyone please?
Yeah, you have to do it on the phone.
Using ASTRO is how I did it. I renamed the folder with the "." in front of it, (Long press folder>Edit>Rename) then you can set ASTRO to view files as thumbnails, (Menu>View>Change View>Thumbnail Icons) and then browse the picture folder in ASTRO. When you click a picture, you can set it to open in the native View Picture or in ASTRO's picture viewer, your choice.
backup
Make sure you have a backup copy of ur pics before u try this. For some reason when i put .folder whenever i reboot, it deleats all my pics in that folder! Did it 5 times in a row, but i had backups on my comp. If i put .pic for file name then it still shows up. Gonna just change the file extension i guess and see how that works...
Anyone else have any probs like this?

Yeah... Astro... Linda... whatever you use should allow you to add the . in front of the name. You need to reboot for the changes to go into effect.
The strange crap:
I take a photo, while I do it, somebody sends an sms.
I make it "save as read".
I finnish photo.
ALL OF THE sudden my internal STORAGE DROPS by
10MB!
I mean I have 10MB less....
And no, it's not the photos stored internally.....
Have you got any clue WHY??!!
How long was that SMS?
Haha, good one.
It was a new Murakami novel in sms form.....
But seriously I'm concerned!
What would instantly fill 10MB of storage?
Is there any log which would be so big??
cache? sms(lol)?, photo? Maybe just something in the background and it will come back later?
Well I also rebooted my X1 after that.
Didn't help.
Sms no as well as photo....
I will go through the folders...
Well, the Programs memory didn't change.
Just Storage.
Soooo strange.
Never happened before.
Listen I think it could be that when you have the camera turned on it caches everything if captures in a temporary folder even if you're not actually taking a picture. This can quickly be 10 MB. And it doesn't delete afterwards because ther SMS interrupts. So ceck your temporary folders and empty them. It sounds strange but it would be one possible explanation.
Maybe you default allocation unit size is like really high, the more stuff you put in your card, the more extra data it will take from your sd card. But the high the unit size the faster.
I am not tech geek so I am not sure if I am correct.

Lol you are correct, you mean Clustersize. But WTF 10 MB Cluster is impossible And I think he was talking about internal memory, not card storage.
Extreme thanks for replies!
Yes I will check my temp folders however I checked some of them and there are not many new files there, nothing big....
Of course I meant internal memory (not programs either).
I'll just add it never ever happened before.
You know, 10MB is ALOT.
Even the pics I took at this time were smaller in whole.
Really strange.
But by the way through walking through menus I moved 50MB
of preloaded films and music to sd card (I thought it was on card).
So I gained 50MB
GOT IT!
So,
MyDocuments/UAContents/MMSLog
a file:
mm1_wsp_wtp_2.log
9.8MB
Can I delete it?!
Lol.

Well just because I'm not aware what's that

Can't tell you this, but I've deleted UAContents on my phone Well, .log -> It's a log file. Why would you need a Logfile?

using file explorer.. go to...
(depending where your pictures are stored)
cut and paste the pictures contained in DCIM\100media\
into a new folder somewhere else on the storage card.. and it will no longer appear in the image gallery

Mate - have a look at this, in the hits & tips thread linked in my sig...
64. Disable Unwanted Folders From Showing in HTC Album
It just hides a folder from the album app. You can still manually browse to it with file explorer, for example, and open images from there.
Hope this helps

i edited thet registry key but i'm having troubles.. while it is actually hiding pictures in htc album, they are still showing up in manila's tab, am i doing something wrong?
WinRar the files. You can even put a password on it so that if you loose the phone no one can see the pics. I found it the easiest and most secure way to hide your girlfriends pictures.

Free app to protect pictures
Hi,
Search for an app called FreeOTFE4PDA. It allows you to create a fully encrypted, password protected folder on your card. This can then be mounted as a storage card when needed. Within this you can create folder and do anything else you can do on a storage card. The important part is of course that you can not mount it if you do not know the password.

i run both windows and android, so what i'm trying to do is to hide android's gallery cache files (why did developers think that using readable jpg files as cache would be a good idea in the first place?)
that's the reason i want them to remain accessible for android use, but still don't want them to fill my windows photo tab with duplicates, so no rar storing can solve my problem
i fear i'll have to give up the 3d glory of android's gallery due to this stupid issue...
Use Total Commander, find the pictures, press & hold a picture, tap Properties, check the box "Hidden", press OK. The pictures can only be accessed through Total Commander.
It's a good thing my 900th post went to a good cause!

That's exactly the problem i'm having. You just have to keep the photos rarred while you using android. Not the perfect solution, if you find a better 1 i'm interested too.
Sent from my HanDroid2 using XDA App
1)Change the extension to some other (from jpg to ipg in example). So no one program will open it. When you need it change again to jpg.
2)make it hidden or system

How is this a problem? The title of the thread explains it with the use of the word cache.
If you want to stop the cache folder from showing up in the album app, use tip 64 from the tips link in my sig.
yep! i have this probleme toO !
And sometimes i see 2 pics but there are just one

thank you again and again john^^
Sorted
Cheers John

same probleme, but pictures are not on the storage card, and I can't find out where they are, so I can't find which folder I have to hide, any ideas?
edit : problem solved
is there any way to change the location of where the images are stored. i selected storage card and it stores them in the root (dumb) on my tilt i used advanced config and changed the location i tried on my expo but still stores on the root of the storage card.
thx
I don't think anyone's found a solution yet. I think it's doubly dumb... it stores it at the root, AND it names it in a way that all of my image viewers view out of sequence. I hope this is something they fix someday, because I happen to like the eXpo's camera.
lol you are right it is the first device i have had that has a useable camera.l
Agreed. Love the camera on this phone (especially compared to my Tilt's, shudder) but hate that it saves the pics to the storage card's root directory. Sure, I can move them into a subfolder myself in bulk later, but c'mon people, no one's found a way to change this?
I changed it on my first Expo. Gimme sec to root thru the registry and find the solution.
Ok it's \HKLM\System\Pictures\Camera\OEM\PictureLocation. Map external to wherever you want pictures stored.

excellent. now if we could only create a key that would let us store videos in a diff folder as well :/
I'll see if it's something Woodhole can incorporate into Tweaker

Thanks for the find, but it doesn't work. We did this on the Incite as well and the camera program overrides this key. I just tested it on the eXpo and the eXpo camera overrides it just like the Incite camera did.
i set mine as \storage card\my documents\my pictures\
but it still sticks them in the root. i've rebooted my phone and changed from external to internal and then back to external to see if it would take the change.
is this working for anyone else?

As the post I posted above yours says this doesn't work. The camera overrides this key and places it directly in the root of the SD card.
Sorry to get ya'lls hopes up... I had changed it on my first eXpo but never even took a picture to test it and just kinda assumed it worked.
Ya thanks alot!
