VAT Price drop. Good time to buy a HD? - Touch HD General

So VAT will be reduced from 17.5% to 15% tomorrow. So for example. If you were to buy a sim free HD from Carphone Warhouse, instead of paying £500 you should pay £475. The question is, will CPW and other retailers reduce their prices tomorrow? I hope so as I still have not got my phone.

Your calculation is a bit off:
The reduction would result in a price drop to £489.31, not £475.

Yep; a reduction from 17.5% to 15% isn't £475. You'd first have to find out what the Vat free price of the £500 item (in this case 500/1.175 which is 425).
So VAT of 15% would actually be 489 (425 x 1.15) as cr5ss11 said

Did I?
I worked it out as £500 - 17.5% = £412.50
£412.50 + 15% = £474.38

Not -17.5%, but divided by 1.175:
500/1.175 = £425.53

I'd much rather see the VAT reduction equate to a reduction in line rental cost but I VERY highly doubt that the telcos would do that instead of increase their profit margins!
Tis otherwise very good news considering I'm buying a new PC on Tuesday! Less VAT means less expensive even if only slightly!

and considering the price of the HD went UP in the last week by about £25 or so (due to the strength of the dollar), then id say this would negate any VAT cut.

Since all prices are quoted as + VAT.
The prices would have to be adjusted from the day they are implimented (rather than announced).
Since VAT is a seperate element, they would have to put the prices up in order to make the total payable the same...
That's my take on it anyway.

I'd much rather see it not change at all. Costing over £ 80 Billion, adding to the trillions that we are in debt already. Over 12 years to repay it... And your asking if it will save you £11 on your Touch HD
That £11 will be £15 when you pay that rather than your quality of health service

Just buy your Touch HD from play.com and use that 5% discount code

Anyone in UK had there tax bill ref Nexus one order?

Hi
Wondering if anyone who has there Nexus One in the UK has received there tax bill yet and if so, what it is?
Its one thing shelling out £370 for the phone, only to know there is another bill coming thats an unknown amount.
Thanks
Scott
Whilst I haven't made an order yet (still weighing it up) my calculations have the VAT being between £60 and £65 (depending on whether the UK charger is added) extra. Mobile phones are duty free, so no need to worry about that.
I spoke to DHL who said I would be invoiced for £60 within 7-14 days.

The greatness of eBay!

Has anyone noticed people selling new Nexus One's on eBay for more money that google is selling them for? Really humerous that people would pay $650 for a Nexus One. I guess there is one born everyday.
youre forgetting that the people selling on ebay are shipping the phones out to people who live in areas google is not shipping to.
I noticed that as well right when people started getting their's and contemplated selling mine for the profit then repurchase it.....but I didn't.
Several of the ads say USA sales only; or USA, Canada, EU sales only.
As well, I am willing to bet money more than 1 person has bought one off eBay at those inflated prices that could have gotten it off Google just fine.
you know i'm thinking about buying a N1 try it out, and if i really really can't stand it resell it on ebay..
obviously not a light decision as there's still risk, and ebay fees that you have to consider

yes that too. Some people will just try to scam money out of a person who did not do his research.
When the Playstation 3 first came out, it was being sold EASILY on ebay for over $1000!
if you notice, alot of bidders have 0 feedbacks. and lots of those are just scams.

Not talking about auction items, talking about Buy It Now only listings like that one, where the price is $100 over googles, and unless you live in the lower 48, you gotta pay extra for shipping!
Just an FYI, that $650 price might be pushing it, but even then, anything under $650 if you include cashback rewards will be cheaper than google's price for some people because of tax and ebay cashback.
As of right now there is a total of 13% cash back if you know what you're doing. So for example, $650 minus 13% cashback is about $565.50 which would be cheaper for some people. $529 + TAX = $570+ for some people. $650 buy it now would be pushing it, but imagine if it were $600. Yea, to someone who didn't know any better, he might think OMG that's way overpriced, but $600 - 13% cashback is cheaper than $529 + TAX. Hell it's even cheaper than $529 with no tax.
Then you add in the people that have paypal coupons and you get the picture.
Here's my logic:
phone $530 +
USA tax (depends on State of your mailbox address) $0 to $53? +
USA mailbox $15 single use? +
USA to Canada shipping $30 and more (those sites don't want to take risks) +
Canada import fees, around $70 (phone NOT made in USA) +
USPS/UPS/FedEx brokerage fees $5 to $30 depends
If you want to take risks you can TRY to have the USA-forwarding company lower the value, so you save some import fees. A lot of them won't, because of the high volume of shipments they do.
With ebay sellers they are more likely to lower the declared value and even mark it as a gift if you ask. $659 shipped to Canada looks like a deal to me LOL....

Mine was $47... (Damn California tax)
I paid $572 in total (minus $160 when I sold my G1 )
pfffttt
i live in canada, bought the n1 the day it came out Jan5th, paid the full amount in USD, had it shipped to NYC to afriend, he shipped it to me for about 15 bucks, then i paid about 95 dollars in duties.
i then just sold that n1 for 450 bucks CAD today, and i just received my at&t/rogers n1 which was 557 USD plus 76 CAD in duties.

Oh man, after using for only like 5 minutes I can already tell I'm going to love this phone.
The haptic buttons are a little annoying but I am getting better, it just takes time to know how to press them. The screen is amazing. Typing is unbelievable. I didn't think I'd be able to type with my thumbs so soon but it came out perfect. The autocorrect/suggest is amazing.
I'm sure I will encounter problems but this first impression is very positive.
HI guys
I just got mine in Richmond,BC.
GST/PST =64.20
Brokerage = 7.00
Total = 71.55 cad
Phone only w shipping = 556.16 US
So at the end around $639 cad total.
Hey did you guys already pay the $70+ tax? I got mine today, and the guys from DHL didnot ask for money, I saw a paper that came with the box says there is a $71.77 duty but doesn't say how to pay it.
The one that came to my door said that I couldn't get the package if I didn't pay. I am going to call them to see exactly how this charge was calculated. Meaning the reason behind it, since it is proportionate to the value.
They basically charge gst+pst on the Canadian equivalent of $529USD plus $7 brokerage fee. Not half bad. I paid $529US straight up when my buddy was in the US. Didn't get charged tax or shipping to Connecticut. Too bad it was the AWS version. Water under the bridge, have my Rogers 3G working and loving it. One down side is typing isn't as good as my iPhone 3GS but not a deal breaker. Itching to get HTC sense on it but think I'll wait til everything works. My new favorite toy
BTW, you lucked out if dhl didn't charge you. They most likely end up picking up the bill (-$7 brokerage fee anyways)
Few question if i mah
how is your reception guys? Any drop calls? 3g/wifi same or betta then iphone? I am about to order nexus1 but cant afford to miss any calls or 3g.

Sweedish Carrier Taking Pre-Orders

A little tid-bit for you guys to chew over:
Linkeh
For those who didn't bother reading it says that a sweedish carrier is taking pre-orders with a confirmed price of *dramatic pause* 369 Kroner per month, with nothing upfront.
That's $55 or £34 per month and nothing on day of purchase.
How does this compare to Galaxy S pricing ?
Assuming that this exact price level translates to the UK (unlikely, but we should see very close)
Well for me, my I9000 costs £30 a month with nothing upfront, so I'd say that compares pretty favourably. Over the course of the contract, the Tab would cost £96 more.
As a comparison point, in the UK, this prices in SIGNIFICANTLY under an iPhone 4. Its either cheaper every month, or you'd have to put up over £200 upfront to get a contract that low.
What does this tell us about the actual cost of the device ? Well in all honesty, I think it confirms what I said about the O2 Germany announcement (27.50E a month with 100 down). This device will be priced a little over a Galaxy S.
That makes sense both from a component point of view (big display costs more) and working backwards from the prices we're seeing here.
If the device was to cost as rumoured (£699 or £599 on pre-order) then it would simply cost more than this. Even the £599 price would eat up over 17 months of a 24 month contract, equalling aprox £230 for the carriers per device sold. If they are to cost £699, it'd eat 20 months, and leave the carriers with £136 each.
I simply cannot see that being a realistic margin for them. Almost every high end smartphone device in this country (costing around £400) the carriers are making £300 or more in profit.
So yeah... thats what this says to me... The Tab (once prices are official) should be costing £500 for a 3G one off contract, and well under £400 for wifi only, which compares rather favourably with regular devices both tablet and phone.
Feel free to yell me down, as per usual, but you'll have to come up with a damn good reason why the carriers would be happy to make less profit than usual for this device.

[Q] Do I really have to pay $700 for this phone?

I'm checking Tmobile's website and not believing the cost, so I called them. Here is what is offered:
1. $708 upfront + $10 SIM card fee = $718 = unacceptable
2. 24 months $29.50 monthly payment = $714 + $10 SIM card fee = unacceptable
3. $199 upfront + 24 months x $21 monthly payment + $10 SIM card fee = $713 = UNACCEPTABLE
Seriously, if I'm signing a 2 year contract, there has got to be a better deal than this. What are you guys doing to get the phone at a better price?
:crying:
EDIT: No more 2 year contracts.
That's pretty much what happens when you go with any other carrier. Tmobile is just up front with how they are charging you.

I'm on AT&T: $300 for a 2 year contract.
AFAIK, you don't pay "extra" for the duration of the contract and then have the bill reduced when the phone is "paid off", you just get locked into AT&T's service for 2 years, at the normal rate that any AT&T customer would pay.
You gotta pay to play.

Lol I am looking at $725 + 8.25% tax which brings that to $784.8. I am just going to wait for craigslist. If not I am going to get myself a Z1.
LoL..There is no better deal. Thats how celpones work. You either pay up front or you pay for it in increased monthly service charges.
No high end phone costs 300$ . Look at all the corners google has to cut to get there Nexus devices to that range. ATT/SPRINT/VZ all take into account the cost of the phone hence early termination fees.
You can try CL which is what I used to do..but IMEI blocking and scamming is rampant and disgusting and you may end up with a $500 wifi only device.
Have to agree don't do craigslist, way too risky.

You could try Costco,
They usually give you a bag of goodies which in the past has come up to about $100 dollars in case, car charger, cleaner and microfiber etc... Most importantly you get 90 days to return the phone. It must turn on before returning it to them.
Sounds like you need to get a 2-3yr old smart phone, clearly the Note 3 is to expensive for you.
That's actually really cheap compared to the plans down here in Australia. I just got my Note 3 today and it will cost me about AU$1300 over 2 years.
The note 3 is going to cost me around 931 usd in South Korea. The Korean version come with a load of accessories that American versions dont have, which must justify the highier cost. I already have a contract with olleh and just need to transfer sims. But for some reason most places will not sell a phone without a contact that I aready have. They do do the payment plans that add on to the service bill. I am having problems find a place that will just sell me the note.

No, that's all you pay on At&t (or I think Verizon or Sprint)- there are no extra monthly payments that pay off the retail cost of the phone. You are just committed to another 2 years with them which you would've done anyways. Moreover, if you get it from Best Buy they'll price match anyone on the internet for 30 days.
That's what I did when I got my Note 2. Amazon mobile posted a price a couple days before my price match period was going to expire and I got a refund no questions asked. I paid $175 instead of $300. Walmart also offered that price.
That's why my advice would be to wait a while to see what happens. When a great deal comes along, someone will probably post it here anyway - that's how I found out last year.
Unfortunately I don't think any of that applies to the T-mobile version, or any non US users. Sorry.
On the other hand, the Att and Verizon Note 3 will be coming with the bootloader locked, so I'm going to wait anyway, since it would be useless to me that way.

What the bloody hell are you complaining about? I wish I could get it that cheap, and with me 80% of the world!
On a Dutch T-Mobile contract it's
2years 2GB + 90minutes = €44.00p/m + €269 phone = €1325. $1,802USD
2years 5GB (max) + Unlimited = €69,00p/m + €89,00 phone = €1745. Only a meagre $2,373USD
2years 250MB + 90minutes = €29,00 + €389,95 Phone = €1086. $1,476USD
In the shops it's €750 prepaid. THE PHONE COSTS $1,020USD HERE.
Truly, stop feeling so sorry for yourself.

If you include the cost of the contract, obviously we'll pay way more than what the OP or I were quoting. A better comparison is the cost of buying it from an online retailer in your home country without contract since we all have different data plans.
Edit:
By the way, you could try ebay (US site). I just checked and they'll sell for less than $1000. I saw several selling with a buy it now price of between $750 to $785.

Smartphones have been like this for a long time, in upwards of $600 unless you get a 2 yr contact, the more high end they are the more they gonna cost. I'll never dump $700 because I need two phone every two years so, instead of dumping $1,400 I'm renewing my 2 year contract with at&t and getting a note 3 for me and an iPhone 5s for the wife for under $700.
The reality is you want a fresh new device you'll have to dump that much money out get locked in a 2 contract. Well unless you want to pay a monthly payment on your phone on top of your bill.

I think you are misunderstanding.
The price of your monthly plan is padded to cover the cost of any phone you may have. TMO is the first company to give you the transparency and be forward enough to say you're paying extra for your phone and we will drop the price once its paid off. Take a look at their pricing before they changed to their no contract , and compare other carriers. Other carriers are pricier per month because they know you dont want to pay full price on your phoneup front so they give it to you for $199 and the additional hundreds it costs you end up paying for in monthly service costs over the 2 years you are locked in. Its not a coincidence as phones got more expensive so did the early termination fees.
Again this is in the U.S I make no claims about overseas.
