What do you rate as the most important improvement needed? - Touch HD General

Now that you've played with the device for quite a while, what do you think is the SINGLE most serious shortcoming of this device that HTC needs to work on?

Possibility to expand tf3d with tabs from an HTC store, like a tf3d RSS Reader, a tf3d Agenda (not the crappy WM one) etc

Video playback.

A Remote for the mediaplayer!!!
I would like to see a remote control for the media player (skipping tracks, volume, maybee even a complete album change) the music player should also be developed in this direction. Instead of installing the 5mp cam wich only teakes "good" photos in perfect light conditions it would be nicer to have a longer battery live...

Windows Media won't go full screen

On all my other XDAs I could view videos in complete full mode.
I have tried all I can to find out how my exec will play a movie in full and it won't.
It just blacks out the rest of the screen and plays a tiny little video in letterbox shape.
This is so so so annoying and i would love to find out if anyone can help.
I haven't seen anything on here about it - search returns nil.
Is anyone able to play Full Screen????
Help me.
Use a freeware player like TCPMP. WMP doesn't support full-screen playback, its a problem with the OS itself.
So this is a bug isolated to WM5/WMP10 only? WMP9 doesn't have any problems on WM 2003.
This problem is request and know in i-mate web... Looking for solutions.
Worked on wm9
Yeah I agree, on my old XDA ii and XDA iis it worked fine. must be a wm10 or wmb5 thing.
With that in mind, is there a way to put windows media 9 on my pda?
Also on another subject, i just did the latest upgrade ofrom from o2's site and my phone keeps crashing and has the following errors:
* when I go back to the today screen, the last window is still showing on the icon left hand side of the screen, therefore stopping me from selecting things.
* My e-mail accounts keep disapearing although the name of them still shows in the selection option in the today screen. This used to happen all the time before the upgrade and now it is worse. Usually deletes the account after a soft reset or crash. annoying thing is you can't name a new account with the previous name as it is still stored in the memory somewhere but you can't find it in the e-mail program.
* when i did my upgrade, I copied everything across from the pda (drag and drop) so that I could re-insert the message files to keep my sms's, although it just copied empty folders. Are all the files locked or restricted or did I need to perform the drag and drop by files and not folders?
I seem to have a love and hate relationship with my pda. Although, the best thing about wmb5 is the memory, no more lost data when your battery dies. They are getting closer to laptop functionality and I can't wait to see what the next version has to offer.
* and finally, it is slower than ever.
Hi all

Windows Media player full screen
Hi,
Samething is missing.
I have a Xda Universal and a Xda Atom.
Last Rom in both.
Running ORB (www.orb.com) on home PC.
Xda Universal connect via Wifi steam via orb cannot get full screen.
Xda Atom same connection same programs install via Wifi I can get full screen in Windows Media Player. Both systems WM5.
Why canĀ“t I see full screen in Universal?
Regards
JoseF
I don't know how it say it nicely (but I mean no disrespect) but the point needs to be made: Trying to use WMP for video playback is so worthless (compared to using TCPMP) that it is rediculous to spend time and effort in regards to the video play back in WMP not being full screen. If you're not the kind of person who would be willing to try the free TCPMP (soon to be BetaPlayer or pay version CorePlayer) then there's no reason to be on these forums.
Hi . I usually use TCPMP
The point is that it you can see in full screen in WMP in WM5
The question is why you can see in the Atom but not in the Universal
If you see the topic is
"Windows Media won't go full screen"
The question is not using TCPMP
JoseF
Agree with JoseF.
Sometimes you just need wmp10 to do the job, like wmv streaming. I'm not sure TCPMP support that.
But of course wmp10 can go full screen if the original video size is bigger than 640x480.
I find that WMP gives better sound quality (and slightly more volume) than TCPMP when listening through headphones.
Good as TCPMP is, if WMP would play videos properly I would uninstall TCPMP and use the space for something else instead. Is anyone looking at a hack to get WMP working properly?

In other words WMP is working fine with videos over 640x480 - thats good news - will try it later.
Matt

which one you think is the best music player

I have my HD for about a month now and I am wondering which music player you guys use most... I do like the touchflo music player, but since i have disabled TF3D i cannot use it anymore... Have tried Core Player and WMP but none of them are really finger friendly, in terms of browsing for media....
any recomendations for a finger friendly music player???
I use only Pocket Player.
mortplayer , nitrogen , s2p
PocketPlayer is the best. Worth spending money on it. Crossfading, FLAC/APE/AAC support, great and finger-friendly library...the only bad thing about pocket player is that you can't get it on your desktop PC
PS. Oh, and HD becomes a bit laggy when using pocket-player, but it mostly manifests itself with poor tf3d framerates.
Receiving calls, writing sms etc works fine. Since you don't use tf3d this shouldn't be an issue for you.
I use Pocket Player and I have had problems with it - the HD certainly is laggy when running it and fairly often I have to Soft Reset and even Hard Reset to get the phone back to a usable state. I haven't looked into a alternative yet.
EDIT : I should say that I have disabled TF3D and use SPB Pocket Plus instead.
I use PocketMusic 5.0
Equalizer is more effective than the one within mediaplayer. Together with a Bose QC3 headphone. Great sound!
About a year ago I tried every music player I could get my hands on. I found Pocketplayer to be the best for what I need. I have been using PocketPlayer for almost a year now on various devices. Seems the slowest on the HD. Minimising/maximising takes too long imo. The program is fantastic, only downfall is the speed.
Pocket Player for me.
I like also Pocket Tunes but it does not have a WVGA skin so you have to put up with VGA. The advantage is the sound quality is a little better than Pocket Player.
But, if I had to have only one then Pocket Player.
Kinoma FreePlay or Kinoma Play.
Unlike all the other players, it doesn't get slow when you have 5-10GB of music.
It features smooth scrolling and a beautiful, ultra fast user interface.
Makes use of GSensor and rotates with a nice animation.
I think it's the best player and I could not find any disadvantages. Other players have disadvantages like PocketPlayer getting slow with lots of music in the library, S2P not working in landscape mode (except for coverflow) and being a bit buggy sometimes, PocketTunes not working with WVGA....
Kinoma is finger-friendly, ultra fast, stable and feature-complete.
pocket player top tip for hd !! On pocket player advanced settings set the priority to normal
sorry for the semi-offtopic but does one of the mentioned players let you choose the shuffle by album like in good old ipod?
i can say for sure that tf3d wmp and s2p don't (sadly!!)

Thanks for the tip - I must admit to have not explored the advanced settings !!
What does it do when the priority is set to normal ?? (mine was previously on "Highest")
MortPlayer
Strange no one use MortPlayer! For my needs simply the best! And a lot of features to customize as YOU like

Simple, it uses less cpu ! the higher the value more cpu it will "reserv" for itself leaving for e.g. tf3d "laggy". Bellow normal while doing smt heavy the music starts to stutter.
Try it !
thank you for all the feedback guys... all of you have been more than helpful...i will try pocket player
Has any1 tried PocketMusic..i find it more easy fast and better sound quality than pocket player. You can select a folder or even a single track
Hey guys, I tried almost all players besides Pocket Music and Kinoma FreePlay. Until now, the best for music was the native wmp, coreplayer being horrible for music for me.... Now I want to test Pocket music, but I have a problem, how and WHERE can I get a WVGA skin???? The native one is really beautiful, but "only" VGA. There should be about 10000 themes as it comes from Winamp, BUT, which one is WVGA?.. Could someone please help me? Thank you!!!!^^ to topic: until now, I "love" wmp, cause its hardware accelerated, so it NEVER stopps with multitasking (only on opening Opera, but I think Opera takes for this task full 100% cpu) and it shows my covers beautifully^^ but just try all, there are always trial versions
Now with Wvga skin ptunes can be used at full resolution on THD.

Any player that supports playlist on the main screen? I'm using wmp, but it waste so much space that could house a long playlist to choose from, I don't use wmp for movies anyway.

Full screen video - iplayer files

Hi
I have searched around a bit & not found an answer to this, although others have reported the same issue (with different files).
I want to view iplayer (BBC) videos in full screen, but played through Windows Media they are reduced to about 3/4 of the screen & slightly choppy. I can cope with the choppy (although I don't see why it is) but I want to scale up the video to fit the screen, otherwise what is the point of this resolution.
Are there any options ?
This is the same behaviour on stock 6.1 OS & a cooked 6.5 OS.
Yeh i've got the same issue.
I mean what's all this about - i don't understand why the quality is so bad on the iplayer mobile website; surely the iplayer applications on the iphone, some nokias phones etc are of good quality?
I haven't actually done anything to my the rom on my xperia and i only got it a couple of weeks ago, but i'm looking to possibly flashing 6.5 to the device in the future providing i find a good version of it(as i have no clue where to start) . As well as this i've only just been able to get onto the iplayer mobile website as my xperia wasn't recognised as a supported device by the website and it turns out the user agent in opera was blank for some reason
with my current setup, iplayer appears really small when streaming is first started and when put into fullscreen mode only fills about 3/4 of the screen with a border of black as well as the picture being really badly pixelated. There's got to be some better alternative to this, maybe a third party app perhaps which can do better quality. I hope the bbc improve on this at some point because this is a real disapointment
have you got a fix on this at all?
(i know and it's proper jarring when people don't reply to your threads)
The bbc have to get a stream which will connect over slow speeds to mobiles with small screens. Whereas the X1 has one of the biggest screens (in terms of pixels) on the market. This is why it looks crap on the X1.
Instead of streaming you could try "sideloading" and download the mobile version of the file from the iPlayer website first and copying it across to the phone.
Or use the iPlayer Downloader which will get the iPhone version as an MP4 for you to copy across.

Smartphones noob planning to buy HD concerned about video playback

Hello,
i'm really noob to smartphones... my last phone being a very old Nokia (5 or 6 years old) which can just call and send sms^^
I am now considering buying a HTC touch HD and what i am looking for is mostly:
a) big screen for reading comics
b) big screen and video quality for watching movies
c) gps
d) decent phone (call and sms)
My biggest concern, reading many topics on the subject, is the quality of video playback and the need to convert video files.
Is there some smartphones (with of course the appropriate viewer programs) which can manage any video (divx, xvid...) with good results? (without the need of converting video files)
Or it's the same situation for any phones on the market?
The HD can manage xvid files with core player? I think i read somewhere they need to be converted too but i'd like to make sure.
Thanks a lot for any calrifications on the issue
I watched a divx movie using the core player sometime back. but now I tend to watch the bbc catchup programmes which are in wmv.
I dont know about reading comics on the screen but of the few time times that I have read my ebooks on it, I found that I had to constantly zoom in and out.
for the gps is quick ok. I use Quick GPS to get a lock on my position and then use one of Google Maps, Garmin XT, Live Maps and they do just fine.
I don't have much to say about the call and sms except maybe that it does the job well.
It's quite easy: video playback requires processing power and a driver system which allows to make proper use of it. In addition, it also depends on the formats, which require more or less processing power. I believe you will encounter the same difficulties on all the other smartphones at this moment. The TG01 looks promising, but it then still depends on the format of the video file.
Maybe it's just too early for the kind of video playback you are used to due to the Web 2.0 and the x86 processing power. Next year, the situation might look better on the mobile market.
i have had no probs in video playback in fullscreen, i think it works well.

Video Quality

Playing back videos that are stored on my sd card, as well as youtube videos, are not clear at all. They aren't even close to how clear they appear on my ipod touch. Is that because the file source resolution does not match the HD2's resolution? Even when videos are played in original resolution, they still are grainy and pixelated.
You will find all videos related stuff here, Simple search can do a trick
Has anyone seen a chart that would be similar to this one for the Sony Ericsson:
http://www.howardforums.com/showpost.php?p=8491877&postcount=24
I'd like to set up the optimum settings in my SUPER conversion software. If you have setting in SUPER that you are using and really like, could you please share? Thanks.
For Youtube, if you're using the Youtube client you should set the quality to the best.
Use Core player, I get very good results. Plays all of my divx/xvid movies without conversion. Better Quality than any ipod i have seen. Just search for best settings to use!
Has anyone test driven the "Kinoma Player"? It is supposed to be very good and works with Leo. I don't know, just trying to find out some information about the quality of this product.

For purchasing core player to use with the HD2, do you download the WM Pocket PC version, or the WM Smartphone version?
I believe these are the ideal settings once it's downloaded (correct?):
Menu/Tools/Settings/Select Page/Video and set :
1-Video output to DirectDraw (not GDI)
2-Smooth Zoom to ON

wm pocket pc version is the one you want, the smartphone version is for non-touch screen devices.
Those settings are fine. GDI works also.

I'm biased, of course, but Kinoma Play is a pretty great app.
The product page is a good representation of what it can do: http://kinoma.com/play/
You can see it in action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LfYZ-bC20eM
Plus, there's 30-day money-back guarantee in case you're not delighted.
