HD 'forgets' screen turn-off setting - Touch HD General

I've checked the box in alimentation menu, to turn-off the screen after 1 minute of inactivity and to decrease light of the screen after 10 sec. but if I reset the phone cause some new installation requires, the HD forget to go in standby mode and let with ligh decreased...why?!?!?!
has it happen to anyone other?
what can I do?

So the only way to go to sleep is to press the power off button? This might drain the battery if you forget to do that. What if the device is waken up when there is a new email? It won't go back to sleep after that?

You are not the only one who has noticed this.
Obviously there's a registry hack to alter the settings but you would still have the same problem albeit with different settings.

All programs close when screen goes black

Hi all.
I have this annoying problem with my Blackstone.
When the screen turns off everything closes down. It's really annoying if i'm using messenger or something and not look on it for 2 min it closes messenger down.
I know i can choose in battery setting not to turn off the unit if it's not used for a while, but i still like that the screen is turned off, but still working.
Can this be done??

Yes it can.
Go to Start/Settings/System/Power/Advanced and you can select the screen or backlight to turn off if device is not used for x mins on either battery or external power

Yeah i know, but it only turn the lights down, not turn the screen off. It's only if i choose to turn off the device the screen turns off.
I use gyrator to set up an event that turns the screen off without turning the device off when the stylus is inserted (you can modify the default gyrator behaviour which is to lock the screen when the stylus is inserted). If you want to be fancy you could set it up to turn the screen off if the phone is turned face down, you don't really need the screen on then anyway unless you're in the habit of looking at your phone above your face while lying on your back, or trying to use it while doing acrobatics in an stunt plane.

Just tried the screen off when phone is face down and it doesn't seem to be working for me either for some reason. But the stylus in event is working fine, just pop the stylus out and put it back in again and the screen goes completely off without killing the processes in the background (can still explore phone with active sync). I wouldn't want to mess with the power button as that is really useful to provide a proper device suspend when I want it.
I have a similar problem but with the GPS.
I have raised the question here, on some other forums and directly to HTC.
From HTC I got the answer that it is done by design to minimize battery drain and that they would have many angry costumers complaining about low battery life.
The only solution I know of so far is to use a 3rd party app.
I use "screenoff" and everytime I use the GPS I go to advanced-power and uncheck all the boxes.
When I'm done using the GPS I check the boxes again, otherwise I'll have to remember to turn the screen off manually everytime in "normal" usage of the phone.
I think it's sad though on such an expensive device not to have the option to run programs and hardware in sleep mode.
I'd rather find a solution where I can push the power button as usual and where I can have the boxes in advanced-power checked all the time.
I managed to get gyrator to turn the screen off by flipping face down, just needed to put the screen off command before all the rotation disable commands. Now if I want to disable the screen I just have to flip it face down for a second or so.
Thx for all your help.
But i found out that it's not only when the screen turns off everything closes. If i just leave it on home screen for like 2 min. everything also closes down.
I've heard from another forum that it's something HTC has decided to do to keep on the battery....
I don't know if there is anything to do here then??
Go to the start button, select settings, select system , scroll down and select power then the advanced tab and UNTICK Turn off device if not used for 2mins for both external and battery power.

I had a similar problem and only thing which resolved it was a hard reset!
I'm just testing it again to make sure. Have a track playing in the HTC music app and I'm signed in to messenger. Screen is off and I'm waiting for 3 mins to make sure.

That was going to be my next suggestion, really doesn't sound like normal operation to me. So hardreset and install one app at a time until you find out what is messing things up for you. 3 mins are up and track is still playing and I'm still signed in to messenger.
Thanks to a guy called Dawsonas I just found a program called Pocketshield.
It has an application permission feature:
"When this app is running override power off: just do screen off" (use this option for music players, GPS apps, loggers, IM, or any app that needs the device to stay awake). This setting will take effect either when "Power off on lock" or "Power off after 20 seconds" options are enabled.
Check it out

Backlight Issue

I have recently had to hard reset my phone and for some reason the backlight only stays on for a matter of seconds. Can someone point me in the right direction of increasing this please. I do have Xperia Tweak installed and can't see the setting on that either.

Try settings, system, power, advanced and then change the time out for backlight there...
remove HKCU\ControlPanel\Backlight\ACTimeout & BatteryTimeout
Soft Reset

Screen not turning off

For some reason my screen just dims instead of turning off when I dont use the phone. If I press the hang up button it goes off like normal but if I just set it down it dims and stays on, draining my battery... Has anyone else experienced this?

I take it you've already checked your backlight settings in Settings, Power ?
Yes and I have done a soft reset as well. I'm not really a "phone guy" so I hope this is something easy to fix....
Hello,
The way I have my device setup to get round this problem is this:
Go to Settings>Sound&Display> then scroll down until you see Display then click on Backlight.
On the page that appears, scroll down to "On Battery Power". Here put a tick in the box "Dim Backlight..." and set the time you want to allow before this function kicks in (mine is set at 2 mins).
Next, move down to "Turn off Device..", put a tick in here, and then set how long you want the device to stay on for before it goes off (mine is set at 3 mins).
You can use whatever time settings you feel comfortable with. Please note that it is the setting for "Turn Device Off..." that will blank your screen for you. The other setting simply dims it and leaves it running, as you have said before.
If battery performance is an issue for you, take the tick off "Automatically adjust backlight" and put in your own settings. So here, for example, I have my backlight on battery permanently set at 30% and on External Power, 60%.
The screen is so big you get blinded at anything above 60% (well at least I do).
Hope this helps.

How to lock the screen by turning it off?

Hi, my typical procedure before putting the phone in the pocket is to hold right soft button to lock the screen and to switch off the screen with the power button. I wonder if there is a way to do it at once. You press the power button and screen goes off locked?
Thanks.s.
Install AutolockScreen 1.7 (I'm at work so don't have the cab with me, but if you search this site you'll find it. Install the cab and then go to Start\Settings\System\SmartLock and tick Suspend lock.
LockDevice works well...
http://www.1800pocketpc.com/2009/09...k-the-windows-mobile-screen-after-wakeup.html
Do either of these lock screen apps consume a lot of power?
I understand they have also been created with power saving feaures but what do they run like in a coarse of a day for instance, do they drain the battery quickly?
Thanks.

It does but it has a problem with the background light not undimming after locking.
Doesn't the phone automatically lock itself when you turn off the screen? Mine seems like it always does.

I've attached the cab which ClydeB1 was talking about, i.e. SmartLock 1.7

On my device, no. If you turn screen off, only way to turn it on again is with the power button (unless someone rings etc)

Yes, if you just press the power button the screen goes off but it is not locked and although touching the buttons does not turn it back on, if an sms comes in and wakes the device the buttons are then active and could be accidentally touched whilst in your pocket. With the screen locked this does not happen and you need to first unlock the screen to access the sms or the device in general.

Oh ok thanks for the info. Mine does unlock when I get a call/sms but I text a lot so I prefer it to do that, otherwise I'd be wasting a lot of time unlocking it every time I got a message.
Thanks for the hint ClydeB1 and thanks for the cab Fallen Spartan.
I tried SL 1.7 and there are three things, which I do not really like.
1. The phone returns to the very same screen where it was switched off. Some may consider it a pre. I prefer to see the clock when I switch it on.
2. The screen blink once when the phone is switchd on. I find it a bit irritating.
3. I do not see how I can uninstall it.
So, I wonder if you can undim the screen in HD Tweak by touching it or you need to do something extra?
You uninstall it as with any other cab. It's called Chobit Company Smartlock on the list of apps.
If you do use the hd tweak edit, you'll need to push the power button twice I think (it's been a long time since I used it I've forgotten), the first time to activate the screen (you'll see the screen but the backlight will not light up properly) then again to undim and then you can unlock the screen. I think that's the sequence, you'll need to play a little.

The way I had activated the lock was by pressing and keeping pressure on the end call softkey, after a few seconds it vibrates and activates the lock. It comes on automatically when you put the screen off or restart the phone.

Auto-lock screen
I'm running CLEAN ROM (B version) with SPB Mobile Shell.
Considering I don't want any superficial apps installed on my HD, I used HD Tweak and turned autolock on.
To get over the "background light not undimming after locking" problem, I initially unchecked "Automatically adjust backlight" under Settings > System > Power > Backlight and set at 100%. I also set the "Dim backlight on Device" when on battery power to the same time as "Turn off device if not used for". In my case that was 1 minute. I tested and this worked fine.
I then went back in and checked the "Automatically adjust backlight" checkbox.
I also performed the wake up with volume button reg edit making it easier to wake up device.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keybd]
"DefaultKeyLock"= 0
UPDATE:
Just tested again and I realised if you wake up device but don't unlock. The screen will automatically dim. Unfortunately if you unlock immediately after, the dim screen issue rears it's ugly head again. The only workaround at this point is to completely disable dim backlight.

screen does not shut off after timeout

so I put the dimming to be after 30 seconds, which works.
however I put it to shutdown the scree after one minutes, however it stays on forever, unless I physically press the hang up key, the screen will be on all the time.
the other question I have.
2- When I search on google, and press on one of the results in opera it takes me to the definition page, rather than the actual result that I wanted
3- is there a fix for LED notification, I installed the cab to fix that, but it didnt make a difference.
4- the pink spot at the middle, I searched around but didnt see any real solution
can anyone help please
regards
While I can't offer any help, I can feel your pain! I too am experiencing this f**ing event! I placed in my pocket before boarding for a 6 hour flight yesterday and found it still powered on when the flight had ended. I had just enough power to make and receive a call! Great.

Ok. I'll try your suggestion, but please tell me what the screen light setting should be?
Thanks.
just go to the backlight settings, tap ok and it seems to be fixed..
(but offcourse check if is set to turn off after a minute or whatever your needs are)
I experienced this yesterday.. just like in normal windows, some functions just stop working with no particulair reason.. I don't really worry about it.. probably fixed in the next rom.. same sometimes happens with the screen lock, sometimes it's gone.. also after reboot, althought I find it more convient that way, it can be fixed by locking the device manually.. this does proof we can disable the device lock somewhere, I really don't need it in the case I use, the power button is enough..
good tip to always push the power button before putting the device away.. saves a lot of battery too then to wait for the minute before it powers of by itself.. the large screen is the battery's biggest consumer.. this way you also don't have to trust the automatic power off.
problem is pushing the power is not enough.
because if there were any even that woke the phone up, it will never shut down the screen unless you saw it, and do it manually

no the automatic power down is seperate from the screen lock, but for some reason they connected it with the automatic power down and left the options to choose out.
