I wanted to write this up as i am sure some people dont know which one to get yet.
So, first i wanted to get a HTC Touch Pro but after getting into all the X1 stuff its a clear winner for me. Heres why
PRO X1
- 3 inch screen with same resolution as HTC Touch HD
- Much better camera
- 30fps video recording (international version, US version has slower 24fps recording)
- better video playback
- standard headphone jack
- outstanding build quality
- better looking (matter of taste of course)
- no gps lag (this is not confirmed yet, just read it somewhere)
- X1 has a 1500mAh battery (TP only 1340mAh), but this might not mean much with the larger screen
- X1a/i are tri-band UMTS, TP is only dual-band
CON X1
- the panel interface sucks, Touch Flo 3D is much nicer (in my opionion)
Solution: Touch Flo 3D from the Touch HD has been modified to run on the X1 and it does a near perfect job (issues will be fixed soon i am sure)! Thats even better than Touch Flo 3d on the HTC TP because of the higher res
- no G-Sensor
Solution: none acutally cause its not build in. So you cant use some of the nice g-sensor based apps and games, but thats not a major drawback to me.
- No Youtube application like the HTC TP has and playing flash videos in opera isnt very fluent
Solution: Port the HTC Touch HDs Youtube App...i think thats a matter of days only
- the keyboard of the TP is better, still the X1 keyboard is pretty good, no major drawback
- no TV Out, well yeah, that would really be nice to have but no deal breaker either
Basically the X1 can do everything the HTC TP can (except G-Senor Apps and TV-Out) and then some. Since they are priced quite equally, the X1 is the clear winner to me.
If you need the G-Sensor and TV-Out, you should get the HTC TP.
This isnt meant to be a flame thread or whatever, i absolutly LOVE the HTC TP too, just wanted to compare it for other people that might not have gotten into all the details yet.
I also just realized there already is a TP vs X1 thread in here, well nerver mind
Having used both, thats the list I came up with. I do have an inexplicable love of teeter which nearly swung it but reason won out in the end and the Xperia is just that little bit better. I like the keypad on the Xperia because I have big fingers which would sometimes activate the wrong key on the touch pro whereas on the Xperia there is a little space around each key.
Panels is not great and has a few glitches but the SPB panel makes up for it in my mind (just setting it up now). I'll give the HTC Touchflow2/3D a try later. I have a feeling that someone will work out either a way of enhancing it, to iron out the glitches or a way of replacing it.
Not sure about the cameras, they're both 3.2MP with LED flash. I think the quality is going to vary most depending on the lighting conditions.
Some other thoughts:
- X1 has a 1500mAh battery (TP only 1340mAh), but this might not mean much with the larger screen
- X1i has a faster Qualcomm 7200A cpu
- X1a/i are tri-band UMTS, TP is only dual-band
The other thing is that I really do love the 5-row keyboard on my TP right now, but the more I think about it the more I feel the X1's 4-row is an acceptable sacrifice, especially as I'm not actually going to spend too much time typing on either device.
thanks, added your stuff...
Does the X1i really have a faster CPU than the X1a ? i thought CPU specs where the same for the X1 and the TP
glad, to live in europe
Remember TP has a activ stylus, not important but a nice feature. Especially when you release the stylus during a call it opens the note app. This is nice feature during work. (My opinion).
There is no difference in CPU speed.
I apologize, it's not the CPU speed that is different, just some of the code restriction (US patent issues) that is responsible for slower video recording. Specifically:
X1i has the Qualcomm 7200A for 30fps recording
X1a has the Qualcomm 7201A for 24fps recording
TP has the Qualcomm 7201A (but different recording limitations altogether)
Just wondering. I have a Touch Pro, and have been pretty dissapointed by it's overall graphics performance. I'm not talking about 3d graphics either, I'm talking about watching videos, and other apps that have animated 2d graphics like games, web browsing, etc.
The 2d rendering of the TP is pretty pathetic given the cost and specs of the device. Especially in landscape mode... I don't know why, but performance drops extremely when rotating the display into Landscape. On apps that allow me to measure framerate, I see something like a 30% decrease in frames drawn in landscape.
Now, I haven't seen any such complaints on the X1, and I see them going on ebay for ~$600, and have seen used Touch Pro's get bid up to roughly $400, so I figure, if I can pay $200 for a nicer device with the kind of graphics performance that this generation of devices should be capable of, this might be something worth considering.
So what's the word... does the Xperia suffer from the same bad performance?
i feel it suffers from the same problem as touch pro, like the rest of the msm7xxx devices
the 3d acceleration is there, and video playback is quite smooth when converted using the program from the sticky
opera zooming and scrolling is somewhat faster than touch pro, and gps is definitely way better, but when it comes to gaming there is still a bit of lag comparing to some older models sadly (bejeweled 2 and quartz 2, you feel the jerkiness is there, but not enough to be lagging, emulation is just pathetic)
the panel selection is slow as heck, but i dont use it anyways, so i remapped the button to screen rotation
i dont see much slowdown when touch pro is in landscape mode from before, and right now not from x1 either, so cant help you there
coming from touch pro, im definitely happier with x1, but not quite as happy as with my old and busted dell axim x51...
Dell Axim X51v is definitely a very nice device. Friend of mine ordered one after I recommended it to him, and man it is nice. There are still NEW ones for sale on Ebay!! I have considered more than once, going back to a 'dumb phone', and getting one of those for my WinMo addiction, but that just seems so backwards when I think about it.
As far as the Touch Pro and the landscape issues... for anyone who 'doesn't see it', try running any app that lets you display frame rate, or any app that will benchmark 2d graphics drawing in both portrait and landscape.
Perfect example, use SK Tools benchmark, run the bitmap drawing portion, in portrait first, then in landscape. I have found that in landscape the phone scores consistently about 30% lower (less bitmaps drawn), and also, while it draws smoothly in portrait, in landscape you can see visible diagonal tearing (like Vsync has stopped working) as it draws the bitmaps.
I see this in browsing (tearing in opera mobile, much jerkier scrolling), in videos (visible tearing on anything resembling a moving scene), gaming (tearing and jerky frame rate), whereas in portrait these apps are more or less butter smooth.
I am frankly shocked that so many people claim that 'mine doesn't have this issue' when it's been on several Touch Pro's I have seen with my own eyes running various roms, and once I tell people where to look, they all come back and post how they see it.
If the Xperia doesn't have this issue, I will buy one in heartbeat while I can still get a decent price for the Pro!
I don't have issues with video playback.

Um... dude... yes, you do. I saw several pauses/stutters in the video playback on the Xperia, to the point that the videos on the two devices became more and more out of sync the longer you watch the vid. They were almost spot on at the beginning. Also, even in the relatively low quality Youtube vid, you can see some tearing here or there on quick moving scenes. Overall it's not bad and probably 90% of people wouldn't care or notice.
I will say that your vid played better than what I currently get watching vids on TCPMP on my touch pro though.

sharp eyes. I'm probably that 90% that won't tell the difference (even after you tell me)
zenkins what app are you using to play that movie?
coreplayer
For those who don't know, HTC has opted to not pay for the accelerated drivers for the X1. The same can be said for the Touch Pro and the Touch HD. HTC has a long history of doing this at least as far back as the Kaiser which. Even the president of the company acknowledged the issue and promised to make the drivers available. To this date, the drivers are still not available and HTC has been either non-responsive on the issue or customers have been advised to either live with it or upgrade to a newer, more expensive device which STILL does not have the proper drivers. Unless HTC gets its house in order as pertaining to these video drivers, this is the last product of theirs I will be purchasing. By the way, there have been a number of threads concerning this issue in both the X1 forums and forums for the other devices I've mentioned. Anyone who does not see the issue is either not looking hard enough or the standards are so low as pertaining to video quality that they truly don't care, but at this price premium it's really hard to justify.
Call me crazy but I was hoping that since the x1 was commissioned by Sony, that maybe they opted to pay for the drivers that htc does not. I understand that htc made the device.
Hello,
what do you mean, the screen has the following resulution:
Wildlife 240 x 320 (8,1cm)
Diamond 480 x 640 (7,1cm)
If this resolution looks way worse or it looks okay?
you can see the pixels if you look closely, but the its fine really!
Maybe I'm just really picky, but I almost crapped myself when I saw "3.2" QVGA" on Edgadget >.< Pictures is probably fine but text will be a nightmare.
I had a play with one yesterday, texting is fine on it!
yes same with me. i am surprised about display quality. its really good.
its okay i think
depends on which you compare it
so compared to nexus one, htc desire / evo 4g / incredible etc the screen looks not as good as you hope but standalone its okay i think... not the best bot not the worth
^^ i thought, that it is clear, that you can not compare it to the amoled displays.
of the models which are sold for nearly double the prize.
beside this, it is a really good conventional display.
i agree. I lost my HTC magic, and afther a couple of days i agreed with buying this beautiful device. You cant compare it with the desire or legend, but i think for budget phones it is the best on the market! much better then the x10 mini!
the resolution is not really bad comparing with the desire.
yeah its okay i think
if you don't hold it 10cm near your eyes
im wondering...if wildfire just only got 240x320 resolution on 3.2 inches screen, so whats the advantages to have android 2.1 on it at all? i mean in terms of web browsing, gaming and photo shooting....i dont have any clue bout that
the apps which are compiled on android 2.1 source runs
thats the biggest benefit
@albert emmer: sorry i dont get your point. this means i should use windows 3.1 on my netbook instead of win7 because of its small 10.1 screen ???

bro, its not bout screen size but the screen resolution. for example, you use 320x240 pixel picture as wallpaper on your 640x480 pixel screen. so how bout the display? it will stretched out the picture to fit with the screen. then u will find out the blocky effect on your screen. haha...
of course the resolution does matters. some games or apps require high resolution to run on that phone.
honestly, i love all the features that wildfire have but the screen resolution get me a lil bit upset=)
^^ no question about this. just wonder about your question about the benefits of 2.1 on this device, thats all bro ;-)
display quality is **** , but I am comparing it to my nexus one.
All other spec's I think are ok for a phone of this level but resolution could be a lot better.
Small resolution but it is a cheap device.
I am quite satisfied however.
HTC's marketing managers must be discharged: 320x240 for 3.2'' display????
Even good colors is not the solution.
Can see the pixels from 1m, browsing - f..d & stupid game.
Screen MUST be VGA.
I'm very angry: they break my dream (present it to my wife).
Hi! i have a question... there is any option/app to, like on PC, when any full screen software do not have your resolution, not resize the app to the screen?
because, i think the worst defect of the wildfire is the non standard resolution, and a lot of apps do not have this resolution... and i think this causes some apps not to work very well, specially games...
i dont know if im explaining myself (my english is not very good)
No, its the app that must support the resolution. You can use apps like LCD Density Changer to give the effect of a higher resolution, but that is hardly optimal.
This is why there are complaints everywhere about Android Fragmentation. There is no standard set of requirements, which leads to issues like these (Only for low end devices though)
Lastly, the games not playing is more because of the grandfather-age hardware and no GPU on the phone. Not the resolution.
If you don't have the big bucks to spend on a VR camera rig, now there's a solution for you that's 100% FREE
We recently moved our app, Camarada VR (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.aimfire.camarada), to public beta. We'd be grateful if you can give it a try, and let us know your comments and suggestions. This app has been in private beta for a few months and been tested on all leading smartphone brands/models. But bugs no doubt still exist, for which we humbly ask for your patience.
Camarada VR is the place to share and enjoy true 3D VR videos, created by YOU!
Camarada syncs and links you and your friends' smartphones to capture true stereoscopic 3D Virtual Reality videos :highfive:. It is the ONLY mobile app that allows you to create videos in 3D!
Enjoy the 3D videos in your Cardboard, Gear VR or 3D glasses, and share it so friends and family can see YOUR life in three dimensions!
It uses sophisticated Computer Vision algorithms to produce high-def 3D videos, and there's absolutely no rig required and no post-processing needed on your part - easy as a pie! See video below for proof:
FAQs
How is Camarada different from existing 360/3D camera apps?
Existing apps capture multiple pictures (or a short video clip), then stitch the pictures (or frames in the short clip) together. They create panoramic 2D pictures which, when viewed in a VR goggle, give an added sense of realism. However, this realism can never be on the same level as true 3D videos! Camarada gives you a far more immersive experience than any of them can. But don't take our words for it - try the app and you will see!
How is Camarada different from Google Cardboard Camera?
Google Cardboard Camera is capable of capturing 3D panoramic photos. It is good for inanimate objects but not dynamic scenes (use it when someone is moving in the scene, and you will know what we mean). In contrast, Camarada captures high-definition 3D VR videos.
Why are two phones needed to capture 3D video? I thought some 3D apps can do this with one device?
You need two cameras capturing at the exact same time and from slightly different angles to have true, stereoscopic 3D, period. There is no way around this - it's physics and it's how our eyes work. Any app that claims to capture "3D" using one phone, is making some tradeoff - either it's for inanimate objects only, or it's not stereoscopic 3D at all.
Do I need two phones of the same kind/model?
No, you don't - you can use any combination of Android devices, whatever you and your friend happen to have. Camarada does the hard work and adjusts for the differences. If you happen to have two identical phones, however, the software can detect and take advantage of this, and in some cases render higher quality results.
I cannot find a friend to capture with me, what can I do?
No problem. With Camarada, you can explore fun and engaging content created by people you know and by people from around the world. Enjoy them, and when opportunity arises, capture your own and share with the world.
Does Camarada capture 360-degree videos?
No. The 3D VR videos Camarada captures currently have roughly 180 degrees field of view. We are actively working on innovative ways to expand the FOV, so stay tuned.
Can Camarada capture 3D photos?
Absolutely! And unlike existing 3D camera apps, it takes 3D photos of any dynamic scene. In other words, it is a REAL 3D camera, not one that can only take 3D pictures of a table, a chair, a vase... you get the idea
I do not have a VR viewer, what can I do?
We support all Google Cardboard variants and Samsung Gear VR. But if you don't have one of these yet, we support 3D glasses and 3D TVs as well (currently only for photos).
It's really cool that you have to utilize 2 phones for it. :highfive:
I've tried other apps like Photo Sphere, Splash and Panorama 360 and this is hands down the best app for 3D VR videos. :good:
