Review of a nice, inexpensive audio adapter - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

I was originally going to buy this...

But I didn't like how dangly looking it was. Plus it doesn't have a universal audio plug, just the HTC proprietary one. So I held off.
Then I saw this on Amazon:
... and I had to have it! It has a standard 3.5mm audio jack for NORMAL headphones, and a normal mini-USB socket for charging. It says you can do both at the same time, but I was skeptical. However the price was so great, I had to try it out.
It's only $4.35 + $1.19 shipping from Semsons
Here's the link to the item if you want to buy it (pick the new and used, it lists for more on the Amazon main link):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000UHY6XU/ref=dp_olp_2
second link if the above one doesn't work:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UHY6XU
So it came a week and a half after I bought it... not the fastest ship, but not unacceptable either. What I like about it: The headphone jack is SOLID, doesn't wiggle, neither does a headphone plug when inserted into it. It has a solid *CLICK* when you push it all the way in.
The sound on my Seinhauser premium earbuds is AMAZING on WMP. But the real test was to plug in the charger and see if while it charges if it will still play sound out the audio jack. It does!
I had to trim mine because I have a crystal hardshell, and it wouldn't seat all the way in until I used an xacto knife to trim some of the soft plastic. Worked perfectly. I'm very happy!
I use the "Tweak" Media Player 10 Pocket PC skin... and I gotta tell ya, this thing is so easy to use as a media center... total iPod Touch killer with my Manila 2D and this. I just need a 16GB card and I'm set.
SO, I highly recommend this audio adapter to anyone. It sounds great (loud as hell, and REALLY clear, too!), it's small, and you can indeed charge it at the same time. I have also verified that you can connect through Activesync while audio plays clearly out to headphones or an output cable to whatever else you want (car stereo, home theater system, etc.).
Edit: Added a video demo of the adapter so you can see how it looks on the phone. I also wiggled the adapter while it was inserted so you can observe the usual play with HTC mini-USB ports and most mini-USB plugs.
It looks like it's difficult to push into the phone's mini-USB port, but it's just because I'm doing it with one hand (the other holding the video recorder). It actually goes in without difficulty, but once it is all the way in, it's not loose in terms of falling out, not by a longshot. There is some side to side wiggle play however. The wiggle is minimal, like I said it's about the same as most other cords and whatnot that you would plug in; this is due to the proprietary HTC D-style socket... it's not as snug as a standard mini-USB socket would be.
You wouldn't want to leave this in the phone all the time. It would probably be part of your choice of headphones, only carried when you need them, or left in your car for when you want to hook to your car stereo's aux. input.

Thanks mightily for the review -- I think I'm gonna get this too.
Is this something you would leave in all the time if you could? If my phone with this attached would fit in my case, or if I could get a slightly larger case, I might consider leaving it in to save wear and tear on the device's USB connector.

I wouldn't want to leave it in all the time, no... it's not huge, but it's not tiny either. Also, our HTC mini-USB ports on our phones tend to be loose with most mini-USB plugs, and this is no different. I didn't mention that in the review because that's the case with most connectors, not just this audio adapter. Anyways, even if it was more snug, you can damage and even break off the mini-USB socket on the inside of the phone. It happened with my 8125, and with a friend's Motorola RAZR.
This is something to keep with your favorite headphones, or in your car (if you want to hook into your car stereo's auxillary if it has that). You wouldn't leave headphones connected to the phone at all times, so consider this more on the side of the headphones than the phone.
Here's a picture for a size reference.
This picture shows the angle I had to cut to make it work with hardshell covers... I also had to cut a small notch on the output side:
I'm adding a video to my original post on here, it shows the adapter and lets you get a feel for how it fits on the phone itself.

Thanks for the vid -- yes, I can see that it would be all to easy to snag or bend the adapter and potentially break the device's USB connector.
So, I'll get one, but I won't leave it in all the time

Thanks for the review, I bought one... Can't beat that price!

Works just fine
I've been using this adaptor for a few months, and I can vouch for its ease of use and quality. I actually use this every day at my desk to play audio through a clock radio. The only issue I've had is that I can't use the adapter and plug in the charge cable when it is in my car mount. The cable has to come out to the side and the mount is too thick for the cable to fit. Other than that, I'm quite happy with it.

Here is what you need:
http://www.aftermarketcellular.com/cart/images/thumb/SKN6182.gif
Edit: Nevermind, I noticed the USB port points it the wrong direction. Still, it will work for just charging without the audio adapter. I use it with a charge cable when holding the phone in landscape, keeps the cord from sticking outward into my palm.

Got mine in the mail today! Very fast shipping, took two days to get!
I am really impressed, I think I may sell my iPod. The sound quality is excellent though my cars stock Bose stereo and though my generic headphones. Goes really loud as well.
Thanks for the review!

Thanks for the tip and the review. I had a different adapter, but I just ordered the one you raved about...

Thanks for the rev iew, just ordered one, hell w/ expedited shipping its still only 10 bucks, says new slim-er model is shipping now also. I use industrial strength velcro to mount my Tilt in my Merc. Sable. Dont laugh i know it sounds white trash but going thru all the possibilities it is the easiest and cheapest way yet to secure the phone. The thing im stoked for is i use a bodyglove carrying case really nice protective rubber case but while at work using stereo bluetooth a real pain to keep the phone protected and plugged in. With this i sh9ould be able to cut one small hole in my case and the adapter will ride out side the case to plugin to fm/transmitter or my power cord. Thanks again for the heads up on this device! Cant wait to get the live bob marley i got on my bluetooth, pumping out of my car stereo too.
This is the one thing that the iphone has on us IMO. The fact that there are 3 billion places to buy ipod/iphone accesories. At&t seems to refuse to carry anything of the sort, even in downtown boston at the stores where they have everything. And forget radio shack, the kids in there only know how to sign you up for a contract, gone are the days of the geeks at radio shack knowing what their talking about.

I use industrial Velcro to mount my iPod on that dash of my Acura TL. It works out really nice, looks seamless. People have laughed at me until they see how clean it looks with the wires running under the dash.

Yup, I've been using this for a long time now in my car with my AUX adapter and it's great that I can charge it while I'm listening to music. Also, if I have my Jawbone in my ear, the calls get routed right to the bluetooth while I'm listening and does not come over the car speakers. As soon as I hang up the call, my audio starts playing again. It's great.

BTW got this item in the other day, and its working perfectly. All of the above are true. Great links and heads up! thnx.

Bought this for my Tilt and it works great. Thanks for the review.

I bought one of these awhile back and it works great! Thanks for the review and the info.

Just bought one. Another Amazon vendor is selling them at $4.50 with .99 shipping. Good deal, except that Amazon must have seen me coming - their auto recommendations worked big time. Ended up also buying a 1600 mAh battery, 8gig SD card, and '3 Pieces Replacement Stylus with Ballpoint Pen'. What's that saying about a fool and his money?

Soldius 1 Solar Charger For $14.99 Shipped!!!

It doesn't list HTC as one of the brands that it works with but it DOES list Blackberry and they use a 5-pin USB also. You can see in the picture that the 5-pin connector is the main one they use and they have attachments that plug into it for other devices. The retail price of this unit is $130.00 !!!
I think I'm going to give it a shot and see if it works. I searched and couldn't find anyone here that has used it. Worse case scenario, I'll use it for my ipod.

OK, I found a review online and in the picture, the charger is hooked up to an HTC device. I don't know why they wouldn't have HTC listed on their site.

Looks cool indeed, was looking for me too, I would like a solar charger.
I found many interesting things like here. It seems it also delivers ~300mAh, but the price is much less that the one you spottedt. It is much probable though that the quality is also much worse .
I saw this French company too (sorry, no English version on the website but the figures are anyway the most important, like current output etc). They propose panels from 433mAh (129€) to 2800mAh (more than 1000€). These are water resistant (until a certain point of course, like everything).
EDIT: not sure it's french in fact, just found on an other website, for US costumers, here
Hell I'd like to buy it in USD and avoid VAT .
If somebody has good experience with solar charging, I'll accept comments and suggestions w/ pleasure .

Well, it isn't $20, but I LOVE my powermonkey xplorer.
Yes, that is really it's name.
The powermonkey is a rechargable battery that holds enough charge for three zero to full charges.... the xplorer includes a solar panel to charge it (or directly to your phone to charge it that wa).... this is in addition to being able to charge the monkey from the wall or USB port.
Me loves me some powermonkey.... nothing better on a long flight than to yoink out the monkey and charge up.
Why did that sound dirty?
how long it takes to get a full charge?

It says 3-4 hours for a full charge in good sunlight.
OK, I got it yesterday and I'm very happy to report that it works!!!
So far, I got it working with my Tilt/Kaiser and my Jawbone headset. The main connection on the device is a 5-pin mini usb and I tested it both with a direct connection and also using the included USB attachment and a USB cable. This is great for making an extension as the main cable is pretty short. Obviously, I couldn't take a picture of my Kaiser with my Kaiser, so I took a screen shot of it charging and I took a picture of my Jawbone charging. Notice the red "charging" light on the Jawbone. The included ipod adapter didn't work with my 4th Generation ipod but I'm going to try again with the USB attachment and my white ipod USB cable.
This is a GREAT deal guys. Jump on this while it lasts!!!
I'm looking for something to take while hiking across the states for next year. So I can post updates and email and keep in touch with my people back home while walking, this looks like the perfect solution however the reviews on the site suck! Not many good things about it said, but you the topic starter said it's great so maybe I'll give it a go. Anything negative yet that you've found? I wonder what is perhaps a slightly more expensive yet better alternative.. What do other people use, is the powermonkey very much better review wise? Price wise?

The problem is that the average buy.com shopper who picked this up isn't too technically savvy, compared to the people here at the XDA forums. Did you read those reveiws? The one person was actually UPSET that they left their PHONE in direct sunlight and the battery drained.
What an idiot. Just because the solar panel has to be in direct sunlight doesn't mean you should have your phone there also. That's why there's a cable, so you can hide it out of the sunlight.
Also, a lot of people don't understand how a solar panel works. They expect it to work as soon as you open it up and connect your device. You need DIRECT sunlight and you need to let the solar panels charge for a little while before you see anything happening.
Trust me, this thing is GREAT.
Thanks for the first impression -haze- . The price in the US is rally low, lucky you . I'll have a look around here in the EU for good prices.
The 320mAh (max) are pretty fair, that's enough for daily life.
It would be great if this model has an internal battery, so the phone can be charged during the night. But I guess that will make the price higher.
It seems that my 4th Generation ipod is not compatible with this unit. It makes my ipod turn on, but it doesn't charge it. I tried using the included ipod adapter and using the USB cable. On the attachment, it says "ipod mini & photo" and on the USB it says "shuffle", so I guess those are the 3 ipods this is guaranteed to work with. I don't care, as long as it can charge my Tilt and my Jawbone, I'm happy.
I was just reading the most recent reviews on buy.com, man are these people morons. One person said, "I waited a few minutes and I didn't get anything, so I put it back in the box and sent it back."
It doesn't work in a few minutes. First of all, you need direct sunlight. Second, you need to let the solar cells get a full charge, especially the first time. I left mine sitting in the sun for a few hours and checked on it and it was charging like a champ. Have some patience.
Just ordered one. Thanks for the tip!
just ordered one ... so does it charge the tilt?
yes, it charges the Tilt. You have 2 options, you can plug it directly into the mini-usb or you can use the included usb atachment and a usb cable to act as an extension if you want to store the Tilt in a console or glove compartment so its not in direct sunlight.
Ahhhh! No longer on buy.com? Anyone have another source for these for $14.99?
Hi,
For Battery status today plugin, there is an option to show the current. Can any of you enable that and show how many current it could charge to Kaiser?
Yes for ipod - no for tilt
Ordered two of these from buy.com. Works great for ipods. Initially charged my tilt (orange charge light did not come on but on power screen it said it was charging). Tried a few days later on tilt and nothing. Completed the following to isolate issue with tilt:
connected to nano to see if it was getting any power - it was
connected to second soldius charger to see if first one was defective - no charge
connected to old 8125 - charged
swapped cables - no charge
put tilt in flight mode - no charge
any ideas?

one thing i have noticed with my tilt is this......
the wife has a motorola that uses USB to charge. her phone charger WILL NOT charge my phone but will charger her phone fine. but my charger does fine for her phone and my phone. i have tried about 10 other chargers from motorola and other name brands and couldnt get them to work with both phones. but i finally found a 12v car charger at target that did the trick.....
does anyone know why this is

Finally upgraded from a G1! proprietary charger?

Finally upgraded from my G1 and i must say i love it so far.
stock froyo is soooo smooth compared to a rooted G1 even with my beloved cyanogen rom
one issue however
I really thought the N1 had the same Mini USB that many phones, generic MP3s and cameras have
Motorola & HTC, to name 2.
I know it shouldn't be a big deal but I hate having to buy new chargers every time I upgrade phones.
with the shorter battery life of smart phones I try to keep a car charger in each of my cars and my work truck just to be safe as well as an extra wall charger for traveling.
so is this port proprietary? or is the plug used on other phones and devices and called by a particular name?
Im sure some places will have generic chargers for sale that DONT list HTC and would be nice to know what else to look for if needed.
also a few times today even with just default Apps I had a problem with the screen not waking up, which after searching seems to be a problem. was there any real fix? hopefully its a software thing that wont happen once rooted
and finally does anyone know where to find the car dock other than Ebay for $150? I mean i know they discontinued the phone but since when did discontinued phones and accessories appreciate in value? lol .
I want it mostly for quick charging via the dock pins as i have a cheap generic holder, to bad there is no audio out
is the car dock even that much better than a generic dock?
Thanks for any help!
The Nexus One uses a Micro USB; this is becoming the new standard charger for cellular phones and other small devices. It is a tad smaller than Mini USB, which is what it sounds like your old phones use.
Again, in terms of size:
USB > Mini USB > Micro USB
Yea I guess I didnt notice it was a micro. the only device i have that uses a micro is my newest digi cam.
at least knowing micro is becoming the new standard i can feel better about buying a handful of new car and wall chargers lol
All you have to do buy Micro USB to Mini USB adapters. They are about $1 on ebay. Get one for all your cables snd you are set.
The problem with charging via USB is the phone only pulls half the power as it would if you used a wall charger or car charger (the car dock is pretty worth it).

Full stop. I would not use those things except perhaps converting on a desk where the phone is sitting still and not being used. They're quite long, >1", and would very easily provide a lot of strain on the port if there was lateral movement.
Certainly would not use one charging in the car etc..

Yes, charging via USB has always been a slower charge, as USB2 provides only 500mAh of current. Some phones ignore this and will draw as much power as the charging system requires, feel free to google for people who've had devices blow their USB ports because of this.
For AC chargers, I already had 3 AC-to-USB port chargers, and all three of them charge fast, ie: data pins shorted, 1A chargers. So if you have any of these laying around they'll likely work, just look at their specs.
For the car I now I have two Motorola P513 car chargers, one for myself, one for the wife, and they work great. Only complaint I have is the plug portion is rather long. They're $10ish shipped from Amazon.
Yes I saw the adapters last night on ebay they are 99 cents with free shipping and don't have data pins so will fast charge. They are short wire adapters so they wouldn't be any more strain than a normal cord. As far as charging via actual USB I never do that unless I have to. An Xbox,ps3 or cable box is even better than a PC with a data cable.
I can't wait to root and get cyanogen on here. I Loved it on my g1

Ah, shorting the data pins is what tells the Nexus to draw the full current? I have 2 car power plug to USB port adapters rated at 1000mA just like the AC adapter the N1 came with. Both of them appear as USB instead of AC on the Nexus One and it will still lose battery charge while plugged in and navigating, although much more slowly.
If I were to splice into one of my USB cables and short the data pins (and disconnect them from the PC end so that the cable may not be inadvertently used) would the Nexus One read this as an AC plug and draw the full current?
Yeah I got a nasty surprise too since I have three mini USB adapters lying around the house from various HTC phones over the eyars.
I found this to be the cheapest solution:

as helpful and informative as that post was keep in mind no one is talking about 99 cent chargers
Its simply a cable adapter from Mini USB to Micro USB with no data pins. it is an official Motorola charging cable.
and its also only 99 cents with free shipping if you chose the literal slow boat from china shipping option. i checked a few auctions and the standard shipping is $15
I decided to go with a seller in NY that has them for $3.44 each with free standard shipping.
these are also Motorola.
so $10.32 shipped from the US for 3 Motorola charging adapter cables isn't bad IMO. it also keeps my junk drawer of mini usb chargers in use lol
also the fact they are cables and not hard plastic adapters should keep the strain off the port, this should be no different than any charging cable

Cool, good information then. I've mainly seen the one-piece longish adaptors. I'm sorted on chargers now, instead of converting the cable I just bought 3 MicroUSB's off NewEgg for $3/pc or so to go with my AC->USB chargers.. One at work, one in my computer room, stock charger in the bedroom (overnight charge).. Have a few extra cables now that I also retired my old car USB output charger for the Motorola charger.

Evo 4g Touchstone wireless induction charging mod.

I recently got a HP Touchpad bundle and while the Touchpad is pretty darned decent and definitely worth a hundred bucks, what really impressed me was the touchstone charging dock. Its brilliant.
I looked into it and found the the palm pre also had this and some chap on the net had figured out how to shoehorn the unit into an evo.
I did the mod to mine and its amazing. No more charging cables. Yay!
This is my take on it - tutorial with pictures: http://asmd.wordpress.com/2011/09/26/evo-4g-wireless-induction-charging-modification/
This should come standard in all wireless devices!
Nice mod! Looks better and I'm sure doesn't fail as bad as the powermat charger.

Nice mod. Thanks for sharing.

Hi, this is a great mod!
Noob question: I noticed the charging light but the charging icon does not change on your screen. Just curious if once that the battery is completely charged, the icon will turn green. If so I wonder if the charging unit from the Pixi will stop charging the battery once it's full.
Also, compared to charging it directly from the AC Adapter, how long does it take to get a full charge? Is it the same aprox?
I'm planning on taking a look at my Inspire and see if the back cover allows me to put the charging unit there.
Thanks in advance
I did this about a week after launch. Very cool...but over time the novelty wore off.
I got sick of the bulge and ripped it out.
Nice! I wonder if I do the same with the Powermat case...
I have the Powermat, but the only caveat is that it requires a bridge connector between the case and micro-usb port.

Im running MikG v2.5 Rom and the charging icon flashes between the lighting bolt charging icon and % so you can see at what % the battery is at while charging. When i took the picture, it was showing %, but rest assured it flashes between the two just as if it was plugged in the usb cable.
The Induction charging puck is dumb, it only supplies power much like a usb cable. The charging circuit in the Evo decides when the battery is fully charged and stops charging. The Evo for all intensive purposes acts and behaves exactly as if the usb cable was plugged in. It cant tell if power is coming from the puck or the usb cable. I wouldnt plug in the cable while its on the puck though. Although the voltage will remain the same, about 5 volts, the amperage will increase, a doubling in amperage shouldnt break anything but i havent found out the hard way.
The puck takes the same amount of time to charge as the usb cable. I havent seen any significant difference between the two.
There really isnt much of a bulge of the back case with using 30 awg wire. Just seat it flat and make sure nothing from the cover crimps on it, and its pretty much neat and tidy.
Ive seen this mod done with flat ribbon cable which would work just as well, although in not sure how it was routed through the phone.
regards,
asmd.

30 awg wire or flat ribbon cable solves the bulge problem. Ive got pucks everywhere, several at home, several at work... and its great not to have to plug it in.
It serves as my phone holder and charging unit. i've set the phone screen not to go to sleep while charging, so it makes for a nice display as well. With the screen left on, it does take longer to charge though.

The Pixi cover is substantially thinner than the Pre cover and can be fit easily without bulge.
It actually held my phone up hovering in the car while driving.

I have the Powermat, but the only caveat is that it requires a bridge connector between the case and micro-usb port.

Its been done. Apparently its quite easy to replace the powermat induction unit with the pixi unit. and the cover fits perfectly.
I opted not to get the powermat case as i wasnt keen on the bridge with the usb dongle sticking out the bottom.
Ive havent heard many good things about it, pretty much nothing but complaints about the powermat induction charging unit which is why i decided on this mod and i can tell you it works, it simply works, perfectly every time.

What about adding a diode to prevent damage from accidentally plugging in USB while charging on the puck? I really like this mod great stuff...

Nice work!!
I would love to know hwere you wired the pixi induction charger to?
Im really curious about what you said "Inductive charging back was wired into the test points for the USB power as opposed to attaching directly to the resistors as it is safer and easier to remove if there is an issue with the phone otherwise and needs servicing."
Well, this post finally got me moving on modding my Nexus S to charge via induction. I just got my HP Touchpad with the touchstone charging dock and it is very very cool. Can't wait to get my Nexus S that way too. And the Palm Pre/Pixi covers are pretty cheap. The Touchstone dock is only $8 too. I can have multiple units for work, home, relatives and will probably mod it to be in my Car phone holder. The possibilities are endless. Wish me luck.
Ok this power thingy(name doesnt come to mind) uses a cord to power it right so doesnt it defeat the purpose of being wirless if you know were im coming from. But hey I maybe wrong its probably battery powered? So dont sun me.
Awesome mod and comes in handy for me since my USB chord is lost most of the time lol
I have mine fitted with this case. It's a TPU plus hard plastic back. I have great phone protection and touchstone charging.... It's no more bulkier than any case out there.

Actually...
This is easy to do since the screw hole surrounding areas are grounded = ground since its pretty universal in this phone, like most mobile devices.
There are a few test points next to the Micro USB port that you can directly test by simply plugging in a USB cable and "buzzing" for the connection of the 5v line.
I get your concern, but there really need not be one and these are the best spots to attach because they are the easiest and safest to remove later. Also, there is a regulator onboard with a shutoff/on ciruit within the inductive charging circuit. It will not turn on or allow voltage to pass under 4.5V (shuts off) from the outputs. Connecting the inductive charger to the 5V input line of the USB directly means that it treats it like USB charging. The onboard current and voltage regulators and charging circuitry of the Evo make it pretty darn hard to ruin it. At any rate, the inductive charger won't ever get up to 1Amp anyway because of power loss due to physics. It is pretty much 500ma in most circumstances from the Pixi receiving end.
The test points are far enough for skilled hands to hit with s solder braid or suck up after a rework airing anyway.
For those who skipped the technical mumbo jumbo, they basically made it impossible for you to screw up (unless you decided to connect your inductive charger at 5V to your Li-Ion battery at 3.7V - DO NO DO THAT!). The picture shows the wire going at the edges of the battery because that is the best place with room, they both route to the same hole at the back of the battery. Use 28AWG or 30AWG teflon-coated stranded wire for slimmest results. Great quality wire will mean that you don't have power loss (the traces are thinner than the wire is anyway so its not an issue).
If you have some detailed questions, post them up or send me a message. I will try to be prompt!
I remember last year when this mod first showed up, the addition of the Palm induction coil screwed up the evo's internal compass which then caused problems with navigation. Is this still an issue?

Ha. You are totally right, simply switching one wire for another. Then, if you need to usb mount or sync or whatever, you still need a regular micro usb cable to do so...
1 cable for plug/charge/sync
or
1 Charging stone for power
1 Regular cable for das syncing/usb mount/charge.
Hmmmm

the induction coil and the metal discs in the phone are not magnetic. When off the charging puck, everything works like it should. Truth be said ive never used the compass app. (im not sure if i even have one), i exclusively use gps which works just fine.

How to modify a Nexus S for inductive charging on a touchstone:

I would perform this alteration but loss of NFC is a deal breaker.
Just when I got my free 10 bucks from Google wallet, I'm starting to warm up to using my phone for small purchases around town, so NFC is going to stay.

im not brave enough to attempt this, but it looks awesome nice work op
This seems like an awesome project... thinking of undertaking it myself. Couple of questions though.
Are any of the parts cannibalized from a Pre? Not sure if I'd want to invest in a Pre AND an induction charger just for the sake of this mod but if the touchstone is all you need I might just hunt one down.
How much power does the touchstone actually generate? The stock Nexus S charger is rated at 5V and 750mA if I remember right.
I know didly squat about the technical workings of induction charging. How come it isn't possible to charge through the NFC chip? What if the charging pad was shifted down towards the bottom of the phone a bit? *Ideally* it would be nice to keep the NFC capability. Or what about removing the NFC chip, sticking the charging pad to the inside of the case (as opposed to on the body) instead and reapplying the chip on top so the pins match up with the phone again? (obviously you'd just have to be careful as hell when removing the back plate.
Cool project none the less. Thumbs up!

The only parts needed are from a Pre/Pre+ touchstone charging back. Nothing is needed from the Pre/Pre+ device itself.
Touchstone charging is less power than direct USB from a computer or wall outlet. Since you leave the device on the touchstone whenever you're not using it, that doesn't usually matter.
The NFC antenna interferes with the induction. It's quite possible that someone else can find an arrangement of those two coils which works for both.
-- Rod
Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated. I'm guessing this doesn't interfere with the actual function of the USB port right? (Both for charging and data transfer).
Good to see you here, Rod. This mod looks very tempting but google wallet on my ns4g is a useful feature. Been missing my touchstone something fierce though.

Not that I have been able to discern. It's electrically the same as using a powered USB Y-cable connected to the device.

Thanks for posting this! I've actually had that Flickr page bookmarked for about a week. I've taken apart my NS4G, checked everything out and took some pictures, and successfully put it back together.
I tried taking out the inductive charger from my old Palm Pixi back cover, but realized its different and wouldn't work, so now I'm waiting on a Palm Prē back cover from Amazon to use.
I'm nervous taking on such a task. The most experience I've had with physically modding phones is switching the board from a Verizon Pixi+ to my Sprint Pixi so I could have WiFi on it. It doesn't look terribly confusing or difficult though.

You must be very confident in your ability to solder *very* small components to get the connection to the USB 5V pin correct.
I stuffed it up the first time, and had to get a colleague to repair it, which took over an hour to do.

Ouch.. The soldering step will be done by my friend, who is much more proficient in soldering than I am. I'm confident in his ability and hopefully everything will go smoothly.
I just ordered a Palm Pre Touchstone kit off of Amazon as well... can't wait for it to get here.
Thanks alot for the guide.
Soldering the USB connection will definitely take a delicate/precise touch but I'm hoping with a set of helping hands and a fine tip it should be okay. Though I think I'm going to do a sort of "soft mod" first.
I ordered a microusb cable as well that I plan on stripping and soldering the leads to that at first, instead of directly onto the board. That way I can a)get some practice and if it looks like I overestimated my soldering abilities, I only lost a cable as opposed to damaging the phone.... and b) test it out before fully committing... I'll see if I can find a way to house both the NFC and the coil within the case. If I strike gold and find a way to make both work than out comes the screwdriver and its time for the permanent mod. With any luck the parts will be here next week ...
Question about GPS interference
-- Rod
Question for you. I simply just put the touchstone discs on the back cover so it would magnetically stay on my touchstone in the car, but ever since I did that, my GPS no longer works properly. Do you have issues with yours? Do the small metal discs interfere with the GPS antenna and especially, do they interfere when you have your nexus s on the energized touchstone where you have the magnets and the 5 volts generated from the coil as a possible GPS inhibitor? All I know is that my Nexus S which I just got a few days ago worked with the GPS. I then got started in the process of modding it to work with my 6 touchstones left over from my Pre, and once I put those discs on the back cover, my GPS has not worked properly at all. I even have a spare back cover that I put on and tried the navigation that way and it still would give me the big circle small circle, searching for GPS issues. Did I ruin the GPS antenna? Thanks.

This is probably because of the magnets in the charger. The s3 is the first with this type of charging and of course they do extensive testing to see the interferences and adjust the design accordingly. This option looks great but do you really know what it does to the rest of the phone? I guess it's not worth the risk to just have an awesome feature above a working phone.

That's why I was hoping that Rod could shed some light on his mod. Rods mod. I was also thinking of running a tiny wire up the inside of the phone that I would attach to the gps antenna that would hopefully get away from the magnets and discs. Its so simple to take this phone apart.

Internal wireless charging.

Hey guys,
I'm mostly a lurker of XDA. I was interested in soldering an internal inductive receiver in my one and was having a difficult time finding any information on it. I had been using a USB adapter that worked ok, but I found it annoying that I could not use my usb port without taking my case off and unplugging the adapter. I took matters into my own hands a soldered in a receiver. I was mostly successful. The usb port works great and the receiver functions, but it's right behind the NFC in the back case and it has problems staying connected to the charger with the back cover on. Once replacement backs are available I plan on modding it further so that I can rely on it daily for wireless charging.

Thanks for posting this. I read it with great interest.
I think this is what I will do when my OPO arrives in a few days' time. I ordered the bits off of eBay yesterday, so one they arrive I will follow your guide.
I guess at 500ma, it should take about 6 hours to properly charge the phone. I just want it for topping up at work, so heavy charging isn't what I need.
Thanks again.

I'm posting on xda what I wrote on OPO forums:
inaudible101 said:
On the wireless receiver coils there is only a positive and a negative wire. If you look at the ebay link for the adapter I used you will see the two wires on the close up shot of the USB adapter.
On the port on the phone there are five pins, a VCC (5 volt +), two data pins, a ground or dead pin, and a -5 volt. If you look at the first picture in the gallery I believe the two pins on the right at both +5 Volt and the two on the far left are both -5 volt. I tried to solder on the 2 and 6th pin though just to be on the safe side but according to my multimeter pins 1 and 2 are shorted and pins 6 and 7 are shorted so you should be able to use either or both without any problems. One the wireless adapter I was able to peal the coil cover back a bit and the PCB showed which wire was + and -.
I cut off the usb adapter on the bottom of the wireless receiver I was using so I just used the wire that was already attached and used my multimeter to identify which one was + and - since it was printed on the PCB of the receiver. After cutting the end off I was unable to strip the wire because it's a weird flat wire. I ended up just melting back the shielding with the soldering iron.
The inductive receivers I have on the way don't have a wire attached but have little copper pin things that I can take off with a soldering iron and attach my own wires. They are also labeled + and - so it should be easy.

Hi inaudible101,
I saw your post on xda and I went curious about it. I was actually thinking of doing the same thing, so I'm glad that someone managed to get it working!
I have some ideas to make it better: you can cut the cable that you soldered in the middle to create some sort of connector pins (like in the galaxy s4), and then removing the black pouch in which the receiver coil is, in order to glue it to the back cover itself. Also, when gluing it, you will have to position it a little bit more towards the USB port so that it doesn't block the NFC.
You could end up with something like this :

I'm going to try this as soon as I receive my wireless charging receiver. What do you think? Could it work better, since the coil will be closer to the back of the case, and a little bit away from the NFC antenna?
Dan.

Hi Dan.
Some great ideas there, and well worth considering.
I love the idea the pins, as you mentioned. This would allow you to mount the coil to the case, as you suggested.
I like the idea of moving it lower too, away from the NFC antenna. That is a good thought for those whose banks etc actually use it. Or to use your own NFC tags.
Great thinking.

To free the backing, you first have to remove the micro sim slot, after that use your finger nails to remove the back (just go around the phone and pull off gently).
Great! Thank you for that. It would have taken me a while to work that out

In what way?
They don't understand the initial post and keep linking to other threads about USB adapters. I updated the thread over there with pictures of the cut I made in the back to run the coil outside the phone so that it works a little better while keeping the USB port open.
OK, I read that post.
They are the kind of people who will try it, and blame either you or OnePlus for them screwing their phones up.
Clueless people like that should only be given Nokia 1610's, and made to sit in a corner.

You can unsolder the wireless charging cable at any time, as the parts which inaudible modded, did not have any warranty tamper-proof stickers. If the phone is bricked, open it up, unsolder your wireless coil, pop the cover back on, and RMA like normal.

I would just be afraid of them taking notice of the solder points. I guess if I did have to remove it I could make all the solder points look uniform by re-flowing each socket.
The lack of Qi is the thing I'm missing the most at this point.
