HD reception on T-Mobile UK? - Touch HD General

Be interested in any comments on what it's like. My Touch Pro had to go back 'cos it wouldn't keep hold of a signal, unlike my Tytn & Tytn II.
Thanks.

Problem with i-Mate Jam?

Please share the most annoying thing that you don't like about your i-Mate, O2 Mini or something similar to it.
I have the O2 XDA IIs and the one part I hate about it is the inabillity to answer call the first try. It does this every hour on the hour.
I have never had a problem with my O2 XDA II. Other than the incompatibility with SPB Pocket Plus on the occasion hard reset, but to say the least it's a software problem, not hardware.
I'm thinking of upgrading to an i-Mate Jam because of the size and the 1.3 mega pixel camera. I'm thinking of upgrading the ram to 128mb from PPCTech, I don't think 64mb is enough, since my old Compaq iPaq 3955 had 64mb and HP iPaq 4155 wasn't enough.
Please share before I jump the gun and purchase the i-Mate. Thank you.
1) the camera is no good (Nokia 7610 1.3MP beats it handsdown IMO). even after the patches and fixes. bearable for snaps.
2) the bluetooth is MS stack. not a problem more of a preference; been spoiled by Widcomm on my previous PPC (an iPAQ), interface is not as easy with wizards.
other than that I love my JAM!!! but get an O2XDAIImini they say it has better resale value.
I heard that the i-Mate jam or similar to it, like the O2 Mini has a problem with picking up calls? If someone calls, it'll get drop, but after a soft reset, it doesn't do that. Is that true? That's almost the same problem as the XDA IIs or PDA2K.
More irritations
when the XDA Mini battery saving function is set, the system goes into sleep mode after the annointed period.
If you are using bluetooth headset (mine is plantronics M3000) on lengthy conversations you loose half the conversation (transmission side only , reception works OK) when the sleep mode activates, until you turn the unit back on. So you either have to live with the reductiion of battery life, the signal loss or remember to turn off the sleep mode, mid conversation.
Others have reported similar problems with no fixes in sight.
The battery life is disappointing but I have not owned other PDA's to compare it with.
The camera is a gimmick only, not for serious use.
I also have trouble in some internet sites requiring pop-up password entry
input (ie. one of my bank accounts) where it just will not acknowledge the data input. Dont know why, and the bank IT people cant explain it either. It works well on another similar banking site. ????
But.. all things considered, it is a pretty useful gadget.
PS; Cant buy any accessories in Australia yet, but www.boxwave.com in USA was a useful site and easy to deal with.
I haven't had any probs with battery life on my Mini. Much better than my SE T610, particularly when you consider the Mini does a double duty of phone and PDA.
Camera works fine for what its there for. Its not designed to replace a digicam, just be there for those moments you don't have it with you.
Not had any of these call problems described.

I'd have to disagree with these two comments, I think the battery life is good on the JAM and as for accessories, lots of online aussie gadget shops sell accessories for the JAM.
http://www.expansys.com.au/
http://www.mrgadget.com.au/
just to name a few.
I shall sit corrected and withdraw my remarks about the accessories in Australia.
Thanks for the links. Have already used one and the other was helpful.
When looking around early last month I coud find accessories listed on websites but nil stocks available. I was impatient so I got my soft case from the states, and aluminium case from Singapore while visiting. Good to see the local have caught up. Although they probably all come from the same places
Thanks for the Input
Thanks for the input, I was curious and now I found the answer.
As long as the pda don't act like my O2 XDA IIs, then I'm fine. I hate it when I pick up a call and can't hear anything on the other end until I have to soft reset it.
I love my O2 XDA II, but it's lacking buttons and keyboard. Both the II and IIs is too big, so I'm gonna try the Mini.
Anyone wants to buy any of my XDA II or IIs? Hehe, I'm serious.

Vario II, SPV M3100, HTC Tytn or O2 Trion which one ?

Okay guys, heres one for you...
as some of you may know, i currently have a wizard, well an o2 mini-s to be exact, and am due to upgrade, change soon.....
I've have a number of smartphone/pda's in the past starting with the SPV E200, then the E500 then the SPV M1000 (Xda II) then jumped to the XDA Exec, which i sold and got a XDA Mini s.
I don't really want to go to anything bigger than the mini-s and like the slide out keyboard, kinda rules out the xda atom, SPV M600 etc etc
My question is, what is the main difference (apart from colour) of the 3 main hermes devices marketed at the minute.
Is anyone better than the other or is it all just down to bundled software and case colour......
I'm thinking of the SPVm3100 as i like the colour but dunno wheather to wait for o2 to launch the Trion in this country ???
any advice would be helpful.
It is very unlikely that O2 will ever release the Trion in this country, despite what others might say. Do you honestly think that O2 would wait so long?
The Hermes you have in this country are pretty much it, it really depends on what services you want. If you want a locked down device then go for Orange, an unlocked device with very little extra stuff loaded go for the v1605/TyTYN or if you want a device with bugundy go for the Vario II.

Thanks for the reply... locked down can be fixed surely... it hasn't been an issue in any other xda's so far.....
I do know the orange is a good looking device especially in the black... might have to bite the bullet and go back to orange...
I've had the chance to really put the M3100 and Vario II through its paces.
I found the M3100 to be faster and also damn good looking compared to the ugly duckling the Vario.
Almost everything else is the same.
Hope that helps.

Not yet, other than by convincing your operator to do it (unlikely), or by paying £20 to an online unlocking service.

Thanks for that... I had the SPV E200, C500 and M1000 through orange and had no problem apart from i found that the signal strength where i lived wasn't up to much.
BTW Does the SPV M3100 take mini sd or the new stupid sized micro sd..
hope it's mini as i've just had to buy one recently for my mini s.... i've now got a 1gb sd card which is no good, i don't want a 1gb mini sd that won't be any use either
Sorry to say its Micro SD on the Hermes.
Hi,
here in germany the best choice is the MDA Vario II from t-mobile.
The reason is, that t-mobile is the only provider that supports HSDPA (1,8 mbit i think).
Hope it helps,
Thomas

Using hermes/tytn etc in uk with o2

Hi
I'm a newbie, have checked but can't see anyone has asked this specific question before:
I'd like an xda trion but I've been told by O2 it won't be coming to the uk.
So my question is, if I got hold of an unlocked HTC Hermes or one of it's equivalents and put in my o2 3g sim - could I use all of it's features?
i.e. would this be like using a Trion but without all the O2 software etc..
Also is there a recommended model to buy? - i.e. HTC or imate etc
Thanks
Do you really need to stay with O2 ? Because the T-Mobile and other operator deals can give you a 12/18 month contract + Hermes for the same price as a device without contract.

I bought an unlocked TyTN from mobilefun.co.uk aswell as a 1GB microSD (the UltraII one). Works a charm, no rpobelsm(LOL leaving that for irony) whatsoever (apart from ones ive made hehe). Its the HTC branded TyTN but ive flashed it with the imate JASJAM ROM and used the HTC ext rom to get the standard green content etc.... (having tried the updated unnofficial HTC rom, aswell as the dopod rom). 3G works a treat and im still on my O2 online contract (sim only.....1 month rolling contract...£25 line rental...1000 txts and 1000 off-peak minutes)
O2 is pretty good for me and im ok with not having the full speed internet and settling for (around) 1mbps on 3G.
kevino - I wish I could, my current contract doesn't finish until April though.... there's no way out is there?
mrvanx - thanks for the info that's great. Think I'll look for second hand though, it's expensive isn't it.
Also I'll have to look in to all this rom update stuff to get it all sorted.
Thanks guys - very helpful.
Kenny
Kenny,
April is a long way off. I just moved to T-Mobile because of W'n'W. Depending on your usage it may be worth your while to just get a new contract anyway. You can, I believe, buy out your contract if you want to keep your number. Anyway I'm sure you'll know what's best for yourself.

Review: Hermes vs. Kaiser comparison

Hi guys,
My Kaiser's just arrived (so Hermes is destined for eBay shortly)
I've written a blog post, a quick comparison (with photographs) between the Hermes and Kaiser here: http://blog.evolvedsoftwarestudios....iimda-vario-ii-with-the-hermes-tytnmda-vario/. I'm fairly new to blogging, so any feedback would be very warmly appreciated
I'm mentioning it here since I've been reading all the other review sites (to learn everything I can about Hermes/Kaiser) and they've missed a few things - like how the Kaiser is noticably heavier than the Hermes and how the keyboard springs back and forth. Still, more on the blog.
Many thanks,
Mike
A quick note, the Hermes is the T-Mobile Vario II, not the Vario. The Vario (I) was the HTC Wizard (At least in the UK).
I'm not sure what the Kaiser is being called on T-mobile UK, but am waiting to see as my contract's up for renewal in Nov.
Hermes names:
HTC Tytn, O2 XDA Trion, T-Mobile MDA Vario II, I-Mate JasJam, Vodaphone VPA Compact III, Dopod 838 Pro, Dopod CHT 9000, Softbank XO1HT, Orange spv m3100, Cingular 8525
BTW, it's HSDPA, High-Speed Downlink Packet Access
edited...now how did I miss that? hee hee...

For being a stickler you should edit your own post. I dont see a differnece between HSDPA and HSDPA
Thanks guys for the corrections. I've credited you with putting me right )
Sorry for asking ... how is the D-PAD, a little better than previous. I've an unbranded htc tytn and the D-PAD is not the best ... (and the jog wheel?)
D-PAD
On the TTYN II, the D-PAD:
* has slightly less resistance to touch on edges and center enter button
* is slightly larger: 2mm taller, 2mm wider
* the center button is not linked to the directional pad
* it looks better!
But as with the rest of the form factor, the TTYN II is a slight improvement over the outgoing TTYN. Maybe hard to objectively explain, but it's better.
Does this help?
Jog wheel
Oh yeah, almost forgot - the jog wheel is basically the same. It has a bit more resistance to it and you can definately feel it notching as you move it up or down.
I do prefer the TyTN jogwheel as the "grips" on it are recessed, so provide a bit more support when reading my emails - the TyTN II occasionally "slips" a notch when I press the jogwheel in to open the context menu on an email.
It's a minor thing.
Faster HSDPA and HSUPA support
I believe I read sometime back that the Kaiser supports a faster release of HSDPA than the Hermes (I think Hermes is up to 1.8mbps and the Kaiser is 3.6 or even 7.2, depending on the network, of course)
I even read that it will support HSUPA for fast upload. This was first rumored, then denied, but now Orange is claiming that it will get faster uploads when they upgrade their network.
These are pretty significant differences (for some people, at least) especially when using as a phone modem for a laptop.
Good review, thanks for the info. I'm particularly pleased by the upgraded CPU and RAM in the Kaiser. Me wants one now
I concur, this is a very nice little comparison. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks! I'll do another review for TyTN III
I'm actually looking forward to the HTC Shift when that's available.
actually i bought the TyTN II and am dissapointed!
Mod Edit: You have posted your questions in the Kaiser forum which is the appropriate place not here (Cross posting is not allowed).
In addition - some of your issues are not "normal" eg re SD card and your other issues are covered in more than a few existing threads.
Searching will find these.

Goodbey Nike!!

Since there is no WiFi solution for the nike in sight I sold my XDA star on Ebay. Got only 156 € for it. Just ordered a Samsung SGH-i600 now. Is there anybody else who is saying goobey to his nike?
im uber happy with my nike at the moment

i want to change it..but i don't have money
wifi is very important for me and niki hasn't got it.
unfortunately it was a gift otherwise I would have chosen other.
I don't want to change my device again, I'm in love with my Niki! Only a bigger amount of free MB per month for my data tariff I want!
I'm going to change my device in about six month. Next one will be SonyEricsson Xperia X1 (for now, but may change if another device comes which is better in my opinion) I would buy it immediately and move my XDA Orbit to the trash bin
Best regards

I have to agree.
At the moment, I would defo go for the X1. It's the only worthy successor to my old HTC Universal and the only good reason to bin the Niki.
I sold my for US$260 ... less than what you made. But actually considering a Touch Diamond ... but it is both expensive, and a bit slow. So still searching.
me too. Just have a nike for one day... MSM processor sucks, Video sucks... HTC NIKE SUCKS
why HTC create this???

My 2 cents:
My company has just given me a Samsung SGH-i600 with a Vodafone Sim....
After 2 days my company sim is now in my Niki...there is NO comparison between these 2 devices!!!!...WIFI capabilities present or not there's an abyss...
My Touch Dual will be gone soon after my Touch Pro arrives (hopefully it's released soon!).
I preferred my old touch to the touch dual, but for the 3G... at home, the wifi is important to me, out and about, it's 3g... so I use my old touch around the house with no sim in it, and my dual when I'm out.
Im also looking at the Touch Pro as a replacement.
Im in the mood for some VGA video playback and GPS.
The wifi i less important for me, as my wifi router is turned off(I only use it when my friends come over of when the Wii is online).
