Does 4gb Memory Card Work On Xda Atom?

i just bought a 4gb topram mini sd card. i saw that most pocket pc read thisbut then again i wanna be sure ....
does the o2 xda atom (the one with the 416 mhz processor) read a 4gb card?
pls reply soon...i need to know

I'm trying to figure out the same thing myself.
The official O2 Website says that the maximum mini sd card they've tested is 2GB.
I'm not sure if a 4GB one will work.... I dunno??

Hi, I was using a 4gb mini SD card on my Atom until recently when I brought Gigabyte GSmart i300. So, there shouldn't be any problems.

There are 4gig miniSDs? I only heard of 4gig miniSDHC. If SDHC worked on Atom, I'll be wildly happy. >_>

sdhc is new tech pretty much, lets manufactures to make higher capacity... and the HC is just that means high capacity, they come in ratings of class 2-6 atm as far as speeds, unlike the sd ones which would have like x50 x120 x150 etc... and it will say most time sdhc or sd high capacity
i believe it has to be hardware support for sdhc, so no firmware cant just be made for it to work without hardware change

i am using a utek 4g mini sd on my atom life, transferred more than 3g of mp3s and movies to the 4g mini sd, so far so good, no problem at all with the utek 4g mini sd, hope this helps.

the hc only varies speed right? not like 4 gb equivalent to 8? cos its high CAPACITY not high PERFORMANCE :S which should be associated with speed. i dont get it ..
capacity means contain...contain is storage....
oh and atom life is one of the best out right now ..so it would obviously take a 4gb card..i meant the normal regular O2 xda atom

Disregarding the wiki, the difference is not just in the storage. It's in the driver. The limits are hardcoded and you have to redo the entire driver just to get it to read - and because these drivers are proprietary, you only get SDHC if your vendor chooses to integrate 'em. You're otherwise sadly out of luck.
(I still think SDHC doesn't require new hardware - vendors are spewing out a load of crock as an excuse to not support the older stuff. Especially when you consider that there exist camera firmware updates that convert slots for SDHC use out there - for cameras that were made WAY before even the 2.0 format was on the table. Even Sony's memory stick slots only required a driver update - SD, the reverse engineered clone of the Memory Stick standard, should not be any different.)

I have a Adata MyFlash 4MB x150 card and this runs fine, the TT5 runs of this and is very quick, no problems with WMA or camera pics.
By the way this is an XDA Exec, latest firmware

How is the speed on the card though? Is it slower than say a 2gb do u know?

I did have a 2gb miniSD before and can't tell any difference.
I do transfer a lot of data such as movies and music so have been used to the speed of the two cards. I will say though, having a 4gb card was far more important to me then speed, therefore I didn't care about the speed much.
My new phone Gigabyte i300 comes with USB 2.0 and I must say the speed of data transfer is amazingly quick.

Yeah you're right...... as long as it ain't too slow, speed isn't as much an issue as capacity.
I just bought an atom a couple of weeks back....I think I'll go for the 4gb card when my atom arrives!

well when you think of the speeds, IMO it is a big deal esp when running apps on the miniSD anything that will precache etc...
but you might not notice speed difference because depending on your device, you might have to plug the card into a usb 2.0 card reader to get the benefits of higher speeds... and even then some card readers cant match it...
all i know is through device its slow if your using hte active sync i belive, if you do like one some devices as a card reader i believe it will work with usb 2.0 then, but active sync might be slow 1.1 usb?
also it seems that on the US side, the good high mem 2gb 4gb miniSD are missing, ebay has some but some brands are crap and going with oem can be fishy, if you guys read the issues with the other 4gb cards dieing and what not..

32 gb micro sd card

anybody has experience with one of these?

i have a lot of music on my hero and i notice everytime the hero needs to access the sd card it lags a bit, i notice it when i open albums and when i open my music library it lags for a little like if it scans the whole sd card first,
so im thinking the more space the sd card has the more it will lag for these things, anybody got one and can share their experience?

More space != more lag
If you have a faster card it MIGHT have a better chance at faster access. So a class 2 card might seem slow compared with a class 6 card. I haven't seen a definitive test performed on the Hero and the different card classes throughput though.
A card with equal throughput (class speed) will require approximately equal lag time whether the card is a 2gb, 32gb, or anything in between.

Since this is on the topic of sd card, where's the cheapest place to get these?
I've found 8gb class 6 cards on Amazon, but as for 16gb and 32 gb class 6, it seems a little ridiculous in price difference.

So it looks like the HTC Hero will read class 2, 4 and 6, but not at the native speeds for 4 and 6. So it seems like a moot point of "what class to buy" if the data bus isn't going to take advantage of a faster card.

I am becoming more and more disappointed with HTC and sprint. Too many factors being left on the table for my taste.

It's a hardware aspect, like our cpu and ram.

has this been verified by any benchmarks or can it be? i'm thinking about jumping off on a bigger card, just haven't seen anything definitive about it

i've heard severa people report speed increases by using class 4 or 6 cards. Might not be native speeds but faster than class 2... just a thought.

Currently I'm using a kingston class 4 and the speed difference in loading music or pics off the card is not noticable. I got it for APPS2SD and Linux Swap whenever someone decides to utilize it in a rom.

Can someone post a link to a 32GB card? I can only find dual 16s from Tropam.
I thought San Disk wasn't releasing the 32 GB stuff until next year because they are hit/miss on full storage capacity still.

tbh i can't find one either... maybe they aren't even released yet? i will keep looking
on my question though...
is there, or can there be, an app that reads/writes test files from the microsd card and tells you how long it took to read/write.... you know, a benchmark... seems the only way to be able to tell if there is a real diff between the classes

The Hero has no problem significantly exceeding the capabilities of a Class 2 card.
Using the C2 card the phone came with, Windows 7 reports reads maxing out at about 3 MB/s. Using a C6 card that I bought, Win7 reads at 10 MB/s and writes at 6.5 MB/s.

if anyone experienced in java wants to take a crack at it, maybe they could write a native app to benchmark r/w speeds of our sd cards. I think that would be rather handy to have even if it was limited in usefulness.

No, because it's using the phone's hardware. I'm not taking the card out of the phone - I'm plugging the phone into the computer.
I ran some benchmark program called ATTO or something last night, and it was consistently giving me 5 MB/s with the Class 6 card and 2.5-3 MB/s with the Class 2.

That makes sense.. but HTC still refuses to say that it will take advantage of it.. but an "in Phone" app to seal the deal would be great.

right, it's still in the phone, but the phone isn't reading or writing the card, your computer's OS is, while the card is mounted... acting like a usb flash drive... someone correct me if i am wrong...
was the ATTO prog on your pc/mac or on your phone?

The contention is that the card-reading hardware in the phone is incapable of read/write speeds greater than "class 2" speeds. The OS has no card writing speed limitations built-in.

Looking at the Anandtech review, I saw them mention that the Optimus has a Micro SD slot, in addition to the 16GB on board.

Yes, but a SD card is a built in memory! All HTC WinPhone 7 devices have "just" SD cards as additional internal memory, it's cheaper thand NANDs!
On engadget.com or pocketnow.com you can watch some videos about this. One user plugged a 32gb sd card in his HD7!!!
But I don't know if the Optimus 7 has a sd card or a NAND...

As the other guy said, false, look at the focus!
Seeing as the focus isn't being released outside the USA, the optimus is the best bet.
Anyway, the device is out, somebody must be able to confirm.

Actually the Focus is now available on Rogers in Canada as well...
And Samsung is quite generous when you describe your needs to them on their Direct phone line, and they provided me with an unlock code...

Yeah, this would be pretty important to me too, since its the only device with internal memory + microSD. If its easy to access this would be a very interesting phone since I need at least my 32GB of storage, better would be more.

I have this phone, the SD slot isn't presente becuase it's a Microsoft dictat for ALL Windows Phone 7 cellphones!!!!!

Where did you hear it had 4GB NAND and 8GB in the SDcard slot? I believe you, I'm just curious. I am pretty sure all WP7 "have" to have an SDcard slot because the SD Card Association said WP7s support SD cards across the board (just not necessarily consumer accessible). Like I said, someone needs to tear this guy down.

Sorry to disappoint guys, I do not possess screwdrivers small enough to open this thing up. I have a set of electronics screwdrivers going all the way down to Phillips Head PH000 but it would need to be at least a PH0000 to open those small little screws. Love the device though! I will pick up a proper screwdriver, but I don't even know where to go about looking for one in Canada.

I have bad news...I took the phone apart completely, all the way down to its component elements and there is no SD slot or card. The 16 GB is NAND and soldered to the board. I will post pictures I took in a different thread for teardown purposes.

When the people on the gadget blogs open WP7 devices up, they have generally been finding SanDisk class 4 cards hidden inside. I think only the Optimus 7 was found to be using flash nand so far. Haven't seen a teardown for the Focus yet, but if I had to bet $5 on it, I'd say there's a microsd card in there for the 8gb included storage.

Actually no, I don't where you get your conclusion from. So far, only HTC phones appear to have internal SD cards. Samsungs are NAND chips only. There is a tear down thread for Focus's international cusin, Omnia 7 in Omnia 7 section of this forum.

Oh, wow, that both makes me happier about my purchase and disappointed in HTC at the same time. You shoulda taken me up on that bet; you'd have $5!

Samsung supplies NAND flash chips for majority of flash cards out there. It makes no sense for Samsung to use someone else's microSD cards (with its NAND chips inside) instead of its own NAND chip directly.

No one has tear down a Focus yet. That review, alone with others, just shows the back side of the phone. A tear down needs to disassemble everything and show photos of the circuit board.

Sandisk 64Gb microSDXC : have anyone tryed already?

There are also reports that they are working on many older devices for those wondering. Some include the EVO 4G, original Galaxy S, and even the HTC Desire Z (aka T-Mobile G2). With both old and new, smartphones and tablets being able to take advantage of the 64GB SD cards this is a good sign many more will have the same fate. We can only assume manufacturers didn’t state SDXC support because none were out on the market at time of launch, or maybe there are other reasons yet unknown.
At first insert the device may say corrupt or error, just reformat your 64GB card inside the Android phone or tablet and you’re good to go. While many are currently working, this doesn’t mean they have full support. The chance of the cards failing, getting errors, and possibly losing all your stored data is still a possibility so use at your own risk for now. SDXC cards use exfat file system. If defy doesnt support that then it probably wont work.
Ive seen reports of it being working on a lot of phones, so there's a chance it might work on defy, but the card needs to be formatted on pc first before using on phone and it wont work at full speed due to limitation on the old sdhc reader (sdxc reader is faster)

I'm asking to avoid risks ).
Why 64gb? Cause i have 32gb card and it have about 4gb left. Actually last few month i've forced to clean up card from time to time. Audiobooks, DVR, Navigation software, record lections on dictaphone... That stuff takes space but i've used not to worry about `if do i have avaliable space left` ). Also this card declares class 6, now i own Sandisk/32gb class 2, so it not just larger, it laso should be faster. Sometimes DVR+Navigation provides some lags, for example.

maybe the max is 32GB,class 10

can defy uses class 10 sd card? i heard there is problem in taking picture with class 10 card...

read posts on XDA, yes it has a problem with 6 and 10 class

CM7 and miui can run fine class 10 cards now.

SDXC on Defy?
It really works on Defy. I own one for a month now. Cost 80€/106$. Absolutely no problems after format. 59GB free. About 6MB/s write, 16MB/s read speed. Have fun.

Greater than 32Gb?
Biggest I've used is a 32Gb class 10. No problems at all.

The guy on the website used a newer Tegra device so his article is irrelevant for Defy users. The SDXC in my Defy works flawlessly for weeks now with 20GB free space left.
Of course you can ignore this. I don't care. But if you need space buy the SDXC and have fun.
