Hi....
New user here and just recently purchased the Qtek.
Been a long time Palm user and this is my first WM PDA.
Need help.
Tried searching....but search comes up with too many posts to go through all of them.
How do I install a cab file? Have a SD card and would like to leave the main system memory alone. Remember reading somebody saying something about it but no explanation concerning how to do it.
Why is there no sticky for something as general as this on this board?
Not that I'm saying that this is not a great forum - found a lot of other resources - but there should be a sticky for all the newbies - like me - that explains how to install software, what are essential software that are required, how to change settings, etc..
Anyway, hopes somebody can explain to me how to install cabs and leave it on the sd card.
Mel
PS. Mad Monkey Rules!
1. Put your sd card into the device
2. Copy the cab to your sd card
3. Use the file explorer on the device to surf to the cab file
4. Double-tap the cab file and follow the cabs installation instructions.
Should be good to go...
It's worth reading the publisher's notes/web-site to see if they advise against installing to SD storage card. Most apps will offer a choice of where to install to, but some publishers will ignore your choice - Thanks TomTom! However, you can often overcome that by manually moving files/folders to SD-card and hacking paths in the registry. If you export those keys, it's a doddle to recreate next time.
By all means test to see if an app will run successfully from SD-card, but there are some apps that don't like being left running from SD when the device powers down. Typically you'll find they've crashed/closed when you turn the device back on, but be aware that you may not realise something is wrong until later. Also remember that WM5 is still new and many programs may not be completely compatible.
Be prepared to spend a couple of weeks (or more) trying different applications, and continually hard-resetting your device, until you've built up your desired suite of apps. Most apps are available on a 10 to 30-day trial period, so take advantage of that. When you're ready, perform a fresh install of everything, preferably noting down the order of install. If your chosen backup program allows it, take stage backups so that you can always return to a specific point.
With the Universal & WM5 there's less of an advantage in putting everything in SD-card, since you can't move the split between program and device storage. However, I tend to put as much as I can in SD-card so that't there's less to lose and recover when I hard-reset the beast.
Thanks guys.
Worked great.
Hey guys,
Could someone point me in the direction of a good batch installer.
I've reflashed my phone and i don't want to spend 10 days reinstalling everything.
I tried using SDConfig.txt but it won't start.
I know there were some threads talking about this...but hey...the search feature didn't help.
Thanks
A very good question, I'd like to see what else beside SDconfig can be used. It's been rendered useless on Itje's newer ROMs.
see post#2 of the thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=509891
look for:
4- CAB batch installer by helloworld1: neat, small, smart app to automatically install all of your apps after a flash or hard reset
I did see that link since luck would have it ... I reflashed with that exact same rom
The reason why I didn't want to use that tools is
"Problems:
1. The small utility can not silently install cab files. "
For a batch installer I think that is A MAIN REQUIREMENT...
I have almost 40 cabs...using a "batch installer" thats waiting for each one to prompt me a confirmation is ludicrous...
Any other ideas?

I agree, it's important to have silent installation.
However, that would mean an override would need to be done so that each confirmation selection would install it to either the device or the storage memory.

Something like the SDConfig mechanism would be just fine.
Plus I rarely keep stuff on my SD Card anyway (besides Tom Tom that is...and even that doesn't need to be reinstalled - you can just copy a link to the start menu and you're done)
And what about Sashimi autoinstaller? Personally haven't use it. But I saw a post in BlueAngel's XDA forum wrote by red-hanks. It installs CAB, .REG., and .XML files.
Maybe this would be helpfull.
I think SKTools should be able to do it. Read the manual (http://s-k-tools.com/sktoolsm.pdf) on page 37. There you will find the command- line parameters for silent installation.
I recommend Sashimi Auto Installer. It does what you guys want.
You put all the cabs you want to install in the CAB Folder and then start the autoinstaller. It will go 1 by 1 and install. After it's all finished, it will ask you if you want to restart the phone. It will silently install the cabs (but still shows what it's installing currently), it just won't ask you anything until the end. This goes with registry edits as well and other files.

Sounds good. What does it do with CABs that require user input to finish installation? (For instance G-alarm, FingerKB etc.)
Thanks guys...this is exactly what I needed!

u can stick those ones in a "Manual" install mode in Sashimi. give it a go - looks confusing but it's incredibly flexible / powerful.
With the FingerKB, it would just popup the settings and wait for you to finish.. it will only continue once you have saved the settings.
I can't seem to find Sashimi Auto Installer - the top search result points to a thread with the first posts blank ("..........................") by a user that appears to have been banned?
Here it is

Hi all,
Sorry I've been away on a kind of post-graduation hiatus. I have a few remaining commitments this summer that will keep me busy, but I intend to update my released ROMs as follows:
1. Use latest OEM updates from HP's May 2009 official update.
2. WM6.1: update a few apps, remove a few, and switch .NET CF back to 2.0
3. WM6.5: update SYS to build 21725.
4. Scale back "motherload" packages to a standard release setup, "BR ROM"
I can't promise delivery times on this stuff, but if anybody has additional suggestions for the ROMs or new info, I'm happy to hear from them.
Thanks,
-Ben
thank you !!! waiting for your new rom !!!!
I am glad to see your post here.
I am looking forward to meeting new ROM.
hey welcome back, i wonder why you would switch .net cf to 2.0? any issue with .net cf 3.5?
Hi bro nice to see you back again. now our 9x series will rock actually bro its great if you use latest HP update with you own stuff. so basically u have to make something fast and stable. by including useful apps. like
task manager with corner icon on today for closing apps easily. and some other major stuff which is important. you can see some Roms stuff of HTC WIZARD or any other and then compare it with ur Roms. and u can make fully loaded roms as well as light versions as well. as u know ur the best cooker. so wish u good luck.
just try to fix some minor bugs in HP Roms for 9x..
Take care..
Regards
T_T what a touching moment~ god Ben is finally back to us^^
i just got wm reminder today says "the copy of your wm6.5 software is expiring with 30 days, on 1st of july"...... so is that means m$ is pushing us to flash new rom before july, lol~
so far, the 21500 rom seems quite stable on the device, so just keep everything cool~
one small question: how can make the VoiceCMD button back to working (not the software, just the button, i love to assign it as 'task manager')
so, thank you so much Ben in advance, take your time (one month should be enough)
i'll check this post frequently

Hi
im also one of the users that looks for the lightest rom
Anyway if I may suggest something I always wanted to do (maybe one day I will)
but you can be the first to do so
Mega light Rom
First I will explain something I used to call "HR installation"
On the 64mb ram devices I used to save memory (rom and ram) by installing all apps to storage card
then HR my device
and then for every installed app make a shortcut from the "storage card/program file/app-name.exe" to "windows/start menu/programs" (copy exe and paste "shortcut to…" )
any app you have/add in your rom will take device memory
most apps can work directly from storage card (not apps with plugins)
what I'm suggesting is for you to install all the apps you want to the card
then hr your device and make all exe shortcuts of the apps
Cook only the shortcuts into the rom
now you make your rom clean with no apps
the apps that must have plugins can be cooked into the rom or be given as a cab file
(most apps can be found as a cab on xda)
MS office
not all users use MS office on there WM device
MS has issued office 6.1 as an update that can be installed to the card
(I have the cab for wm5 devices)
So you can issue it as a cab only or using the "HR Installation"
But if you use the HR installation for office you must assign all doc/docx to this exe (by using this freeware
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-openwith-v0-1.html
or resco explorer)
What will happen?
when you issue your rom you will give the
1 the clean rom
2 the "program file" folder of your storage card
3 cabs folder
What will the user do?
1 install your rom
2 copy your "program file" folder into the storage card
3 tap on the shortcut he wants from the program screen
(If he doesn't tap on the shortcut it is as if he didn’t install)
This way you can add a lot of apps option but rom will be light and every user will decide what he wants only by tapping on the shortcut
This way of installing is a lot lighter then full installation
Can be improved
You can also add a link (ink) for the file explorer called "shortcuts manager " that will be located "windows/start menu/programs" and will point the file explorer directly to windows/start menu/programs
By tapping on "shortcuts manager" icon the user will be directly where unused shortcuts can be deleted
Such rom will be the lightest and I think the fastest
nice.. can't wait for the update.
well bro also u can use some latest apps in roms. like facebook windows live . some nice task manager. some other tweaking tools mostly used in other devices. so the best is to check some other devices rom postings to get more knowledge of apps and users requirements.
some battery fixes . some registry fixes and tweaking.
specially for most common uses like phone and sms or mms. which need perfection.
and best of luck. i know u will do great job. U ROCK
You do some great work around here. I've only been here for a short while with my 910c... but already your threads have been time and/or life savers...!
A suggestion - I don't know if it's possible, but there are a few registry tweaks around that help increase battery life on the 91x series (see other threads for info). It might be worth while to try and incorporate those into a ROM. I've already manually fixed mine... but a ROM that did it from the start would be golden!
Any news?
Any news on the new ROM?
July the 1st is approaching and I'm getting worried about having my Ipaq 914c blocked
Thanks again

430 downloads of the diff versions uploaded so far !!!!!
Hi, I finally decided myself to learn how to cook. Thanks to swtos and pcarvalho for their roms and specially thanks to gullum for sharing his wm6.5 kitchen. Since he published it, the polaris section has seen quite a few new cookers. Thanks also to Bluemetalaxe for the Icons and a general thanks to all the xda contributors (TMC, 6gf8's PowerRadio, XDA_UC, bl05, ervius's kitchen and tools...). It is being a lot of fun so far !
It is may first ROM ever, I recommend the ROM to anybody using wm6 or even wm6.1, people with slow devices, people with big thumbs and people with lots of programs. How does it compare to other ROMs? No Manilla oriented, it is rather focused on how to keep the machine clean and fast while having efficient navigation to lots of programs (many programs can be installed silently without leaving duplicate files into windows folder and many other programs do not need to be reinstalled after a hard reset if kept in the SD. They only need shortcuts and sometimes a few reg keys / files to be restored).
Versions available: LITE / XDA
How is the Xda & OpenGL/Freeware ROM?:
Storage: 133,79 Free 121,47 / Program: 100,83 Free 50,91
Latest developments: More and more shortcuts replaced/added, HardLeys reconfigured, Backlight fixed, Power Radio and Quick GPS background as theme. Update Recommended. Help wanted from other cookers/testers please see the post "To do list/help wanted"
Excluded: Manila, Calculator, FM Radio, Office Mobile, OneNote, Sample Music, Google Maps, HTC Task Manager
Included: Net CF 3.7, BT Jetware Extension, Showcase, HGPS Switch, EZInput, Album, XDA_UC, Power Radio, Most of HTC Mega, BL05, PIM BackUP 2.8, PHN NotePad, Cyberon VSD, FDC Soft Task Manager, ACR, Second Today, Opera, YouTube, Mortscripts (Screen Rotation), cruiserrr customization (IE to SD, RSS to SD, Folders to SD, etc)
Links To SD (install the programs to sd\program files first, then flash the rom): Office Mobile, Google Maps, PocketScreen, XNView,
Links To SD (Commercial software): IGO, SKTools (and icons to diff sk tools), SK Tracker, SK smgr, Resco Explorer
Check here known bugs.
It is an ongoing development so each day the ROM will have more icons converted and more shortcuts to SD, etc. Links to commercial software will be kept in a separate folder "SD Icons" for the time being. I plan to do a mortscript that allows to customize which icons to install or to do a mirror structure of folders or to integrate in normal folders only in a "full" version.
How is the Lite ROM?: I would say it is fast!
Storage: 143,00 Free 136,00 / Program: 100,83 Free 53,32
Latest developments: Same as XDA Rom
It is like the XDA ROM but does not include Cyberon Voice Speed Dial, Sun Java, Opera, Audio Booster, Audio Manager, RSS Hub, Streaming Media, TouchFlo, Voice Recorder, HyperGPS, Power Radio, Second Today, PIM BackUP, PHM NotePad. Please report any links included by mistake.
Cabs post
Common to both:
1. No radio included. 1.59.XX.XX is what I use / No initial splash integrated (can use this one), flash without fare / Non bootable from SD, needs pc to flash it / Usual disclaimers apply.
2. Folders and shortcuts rearranged, using basically Bluemetalaxe Icons
3. No additional footprint: registry keys not used are deleted, icons replace the original ones, etc. (ongoing work to clean garbage left by the flash process in \windows like provxml files, duplicate shortcuts, etc).
4. After flashing XDA_UC will start and install any tsk/cab/reg/xml etc silently. Please look in the forum for instructions on how to use. After first boot, the network customization will be launched and showcase will be fully configured ("X" at the top-right corner).
5. Mortscript will be used but only "static" mortscript so not to penalize performance/battery: no scripts doing this and that every x time. Only scripts based on system notifications or processes.
If somebody wants a naked version I will be happy to remove any programs you ask me to whenever a cab installation is available.
If somebody wants a standard or full version, ... well.... do not ask me to do it better than pcarvalho or kostas or gullum, in fact this rom has no development, is mostly customization and benefits from their work and others with the new builds porting and the kitchen release and the software integration.
Beta testing only (see above for stable versions): Lite + Many shortcuts
I will appreciate suggestions, feedback, help, etc.
Hope you like it !
Tweaks
- Initial splash sound removed (not the beeps)
- Pictures stored in SD card
- IE stores information in SD Card
- RSS Hub reads / saves info to SD Card
- Cleartype and ct rotation activated
- GPS Camera activated
Cab's links / location
Install to SD/Program Files:
Office 2007 into SD Card
Bugs / Known Issues
Common:
- Does not contain mainsplash (I will explain / give link on how to change to whatever you want) so most of you will continue seing the pcarvalho initial picture (kostas rom I think does not include the initial splash either)
- Does not load from SD, requires ActiveSync connecion + bootloader
- Some icons still to be replaced
- Usual Garbage in c\windows: proxxml and duplicate png/lnk files.
- Pending to include XDA calculator.
- wrong build id shown on deviceinfo
Lite version:
- Pending to remove voice recorder icon or to point it to sd.
To Do List
Here I include the issues I want help for:
-sync with cell tower at startup
-rapidshare/megaupload storage
-no popup when 100% battery charged. It is a pain if you use IGO
-merge initial splash
-clean files used in the installation (provxml, lnk, png, etc.)
-include cabs in the installation
-force soft reset at the end
-split all htc packages not needed in the naked rom (I only want to keep what is needed for album)
- .bat file to upgrade rom version and provxml, depending on a parameter captured in a text file (does it exist?)
Help wanted: I would like to do the job in a COM3/4/5 build rather than in 23016 since the future brings us there ... but 23016 works like a charm. If anybody can help porting to 23060 or 23071 I would appreciate
Screenshots please. Thanks for your work. If u need a beta tester tell me.
How did you activate you GPS Camera? By modifying Registry code? Could you please teach mehow to do that?

Edit: first naked rom in 1st post. thanks phnikola Not too happy so far though

IF YOU NEED ANY PROGRAM MENTIONED ABOVE FOR ADDING IN ROM ASK ME I SHALL FEEL HAPPY TO PROVIDE YOU .
Thanks

Hi, you are going faster than I do!!!!! I am at home this week with the flu so I have been able to go faster than normally I will do. My roms are "SD oriented" which means you will have a set of minimum icons (eg. office, igo and google maps). Neither of these programs is installed in the lite rom, only the icons. Today I will publish a naked one (beta) that I did with the help of phnikola. It does not include titanium and exinput and any htc enhancements. It includes showcase and all "my stuff". It is beta, I think the lite version is only 5 megs more (mostly keyboard and album) and runs even faster and the scroll is much better so far.
For your post, I think the best for you would be to download gullum kitchen and follow the short directions given in his first post. In 5 minutes you could be flashing your first rom and in 5 more minutes you could removed all unnecessary stuff to have your naked rom. and it is fun also to have your own rom.

I will try to give some hints:
xda_uc has two threads in the forum: one for cookers and another for end users. take a look to learn how to use and take the most out of it.
xda_uc is written in mortscript, by noonski.
you can post there and you will have for sure support from the developer and other active users.
for what I read I recommend you also take a look at sashami by bengalih. You can not find it here at xda, google for it. It is an automatic tool to restore any thing you want either manual or automatic, hidden or not. It is written with the same language.
it is a pending issue that somebody developes and publishes a light shasami that takes care only of the manual/hidden installation parts without launching the front end and autoconfiguration. The code by bengalih is so good! I once did these exercise but I do not keep these files anymore (fool me). You can find similar but not so good solutions in the mortscript compendium thread.
