I know there are many versions out there. I have the QTEK 9100, and I can safely say that it's quality is below average, in terms of hardware.
Problems with the housing/paint, problems with the stylus, problems with the microphone and speaker quality.
I would like to know what other people think, and if other Wizards are better in terms of qulity.

got an mda, unlocked.......loving it... :!:
housing etc is fine...speaker etc is very clear...
I have an O2 XDA Mini S and a T-Mobile Vario.
So far have been pleased with the quality of build and sound.
I have the Vodafone Compact II and can safely say that alll aspects of the device are excellent - hardware and software!
I love built quality, but the bloody call quality is awful. Really tinny sound.
MDA Vario - great
I would have to say the worst part of most Wizard devices is the Stylus silo that becomes very loose over time. Mine has become so loose that extracting the stylus no longer extends it to full size (at least it does stay in the silo). I basically only use the Wizard stylus only in a pinch. I mostly use the d-pad or carry a small stylus with me.
I taped the stylus so that it keeps from falling off. Also the paint starts to come off. It seems strange though, that there seems to be 2 kinds of QTEK quality phones.
The ones that are in Greece, all have the sound, stylus, bodywork quality issue.
8125 is solid. i like it a lot. no problems with the stylus.
although my first one arrived with a dead pixel, and the second arrived with right side of the keyboard a little loose when i slid it out, third one is a rock, i love it.
What sucks though......Cingular doesnt offer INSURANCE for this phone.
Any ideas on that?/

Insurance? You do not mean warranty do you?
If you mean insurance, is an unknown issue in Greece
I got insurance on mine. It's not possible to rebuy the O2 XDA if you lose it/break it etc because it's so expensive, so £5 a month seemed like a good piece of mind.
On that topic, anyone recommend any decent screen protectors?
3M is one of the most decent I guess, browse ebay, you'll see lots Got my 3M its 3 months old now, excellent

I dropped my MDA Vario twice on a stone floor while using the device. Just some scratches. I thinks it's build quality is just fine. The paint comes off quite easily, I agree. But so did the paint on my good ol' Sony T610 and Palm Tungsten|T. THe speaker sounds a little flat, but hey, what do you expect from a simple piezo speaker in a small housing?
The stylus though is a real pain in the butt... I managed to demolish two of them, and have already ordered an new pack o' three styli, for a miserable 23 euro's...

I have a Qtek 9100 and I've got to say the build quality is really, surprisingly high. Much better than my previous O2 XDA2s (Blue Angel) which suffered from failing hardware buttons, paint chips and countless other problems.
Being a student I'm not the most careful user. My Wizard spends it's life getting bashed around in my jeans pocket (usually when I walk into things at work). I also drop it...I mean a lot. Really, if there was a society for the prevention of cruelty to these things I'd be serving a prison sentence right now. Despite this it doesn't have a single fault, even the stylus is still tight!
I realise quite a few people have had problems with Wizards from all of the manufactures which leads me to believe it's the same problem that all these devices seem to suffer from. The problem isn't so much bad build quality, it's just inconsistent build quality. When your paying that much for a device, it really isn't good enough to be taking a gamble like that.
Lewis
Well, what can I say, I am driven to believe that there must different production lines.
Mine is cared extremely, not a single drop. I am not a frequent user of the stylus, and yet.....it's already loose and won't stay inside without tape.
Who knows....

The Vario survived with a mere scratch, though 8)

I own this jewel since September and I'm very very happy with it. Nothing compare to symbian or any other smartphone. Palm OS 5.4 was good but is now definitely outdated.
Recently I had the chance to play the new HTC P series products. Although specs are not comparable to Tytn, quality of materials and built finitures are way way way better.
P series quality and look are simply stunning, Tytn is a plastic toy.
To provide an example, it's like holding in one hand a classic nokia plastic shell phone, such as 1100 or 3310, and a Vertu in the other one (or a SE K800 or a Moto K1). I know how many discussions can be raised on materials, look and built quality. Is a V3 really better than a N70, etc. Yet, you get the point.
Tytn is specs leader, but its plastic housing really doesn't fit its overall quality (even Qtek 2020 was better refined).
Why? Simple budget restriction? Tytn price is still higher than any HTC P product though.
Well.. you're flying the Italian flag and they are renouned for their style and culture. On the other hand your location is London so I guess you should be used to over-looking the grim exterior and seeing the quality that lies beneath??
I prefer to say the Hermes (TyTn) is modestly understated as befits a device that does not need frills and frippery to draw attention!!!
As a matter of fact sometimes it does not even ring when people phone it - how's that for modesty!
Mike
and i think i am one of the very few that think this phone feels better constructed and more solid than the wizard... and thats my opinion..
But we all know what they say about opinions..
Italy, as London, is look and inner beauty at the same time.
I'm not discussing its specs or saying that I'm unhappy with it or that is overrated.
My point was that older and newer HTC products look and feel better than Tytn from a strictly materials and built quality perspective.
Just hold for a second in your hand a P series device or any HTC old model (2020, 9090) and you'll fell like Tytn was the black sheep. (I would still get one though!)
HTC claims to be the best manufacturer in the world, but why its best product so far feels like a common plastic nokia?
ergonomically speaking, it's not that great either... especially the buttons. Makes me envy the Treo 750v.. mmmm..
I have a JasJam and i think the device looks great.
Its not all bells and whistles as compared to toy mobiles etc because the jasjam offers solid guts and doesnt need to draw attention to itself.
speaking of the p series, like the p3600 (trinity), yes, they look nice with their black or white polished surfaces etc, but have a look at what is happening to people trinity's after a couple weeks use http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=287713
the casing itelf is actually peeling.
I dunno... I like the look & feel of my TyTN much more than I liked my 8125 (Wizard). I especially like the kbd backlight. That's a real eye-catcher IMO.

I like the design. I agree on the backlight. Not so nice that they used cheap-grade plastic parts for the cover, in particular the back-side cover is cheaply made and looks like "made-in-Yugoslawia" in 1960. But really, really bad is the sliding mechanism. That's really poor, considering the suberb "content", and the fact that this device is sold unlocked for up to 700 US$.

And there's no real reason for the sliding mechanism problem as anyone who's read my fix will know. A tiny detail in manufacture and it would be fine - and maybe is in the newer devices.

Heavy off-topic: What's was wrong with 'Made in Yugoslavia' products in '60?!? I think they were great if you ask me... Btw, it used to be great country unlike nowadays ones... Over nostalgic...
Maybe it looks cheap (to my taste it doesn't), but it is NOT to my opinion.
I dropped my device several times, on solid surfaces!, but never a scratch!
After about 4 months heavy use it still looks like new.
So I'm very happy with it.

i think that the M3100 looks are deffinately dull and plasticated. the tytn's metal plate and grey plastic make the handset look a lot better i think.
one of the p-series that looks like the hermes/tytn (forgot its name) i think looks more toy-ish.
Dropped a power cable on mine and I've got a deepish small scratch on the navigation button. Noone else can notice it but I can, bloody annoying .

which metal plate?
I think they just have given up a bit of its looks to add more on the inside! Dont judge a book by it cover!! So far my TyTn is the ****! Wonder why i never got one before! I like the layout! Looks nice! Could have been black, but over long period of use the black would fade and scratch more easy, so gray and silver was the best bet i think!!
If it was made out of stainless or any other metals, then cost would go up! Could also affect signal and whatnot! Also, plastic is more shock resistant!
I've got it and I Like it
I've had the tytn for a few weeks now and I love it. I am not a very flashy guy, and I like the fact that it isn't too flashy. I have the black version and it fits my hand jsut fine.
My problem with the Hermes is the damn front cam. In a video call it is too close compared to my Nokia 6630. They should have put a wider lens or something.
I owned two Nokia 8800 series phones, which were definitely flashy. The 8860 I had (the little chrome phone) was such a pain in the arse though... Fingerprints and cheekprints really ruined the slick look as did the car kit which put scratches on the backside; the chrome on the battery got quite scratched.
I think the TyTN/CHT9000 (HERM200) looks ok; it has the brushed metal look on the front side, which is a nice way to add a little style. Either way though, I'll take the HTC features over the flashy looks of other phones any day.
Some phone companies have better cases than other. The T-Mobile version has nice styled case with a part metalic front and Gunmatel colour. Very cool
With the Touch Pro/Fuze, there were a few people I bumped into that had the device in hand before the release (job perks). Does anyone lurking this forum have the device in hand, or know someone that does?

can understand that. lst time i went into a shop to try out a touch diamond just to see the interface, it didn't even work because those idiots at the shop connected the security cable on top of the screen, destroying it ^^
But beside of this, can you tell us about your experience? how big does it feel? whats with the screen size? how does the interface handle on this version . tell us every bit!!
Sure,

Good. I liked the sturdy feel of the Diamond which was largely because of the robust feel that the metal border gives.
Good thing the HD has this too.
Does it feel solid in general? I like a phone that feels heavy and solid. I know the weight spec but it all comes down to the total feel.
Can anyone with the HTC One in black confirm that it does not scuff like the paint on the iPhone 5? I currently have an iPhone 5 and it will suck to go to another phone that is painted black.
Not seen anyone with a black HTC One yet on these forums but if they exist I am sure they will let you know.
There is a short video on YouTube that answers this. I can't post links as I am a noob here but if you search for 'HTC One Anti Scratch' you should find it.

Black is not released yet but we have been assured it is anodised. The iPhone5 was a joke arriving with chips in the paintwork out of the box! While it is VERY hard to produce things perfectly and there may be a slight flaw somewhere on the phone, some of the iPhone 5s were shocking.

FWIW - I have been using an iPhone 5 since launch day without a single scratch on it (no case or protector). I do however treat my phone considerably better than most. It has never been dropped and is always set down on something soft, never on hard surfaces.
Again, it all depends on how you treat the phone. Under the right conditions, I'm sure the HTC One will scratch as well. Hopefully not as easily as the iPhone though.

Thanks for the video. And that's okay, I don't mind a scratch here and there as my iPhone has scratches as well. But what really concerns me is CNET.co.uk's review of the HTC One Black where they mention the HTC One is actually painted, not black anodized metal, so it chips even faster than an iPhone 5. That in itself is concerning.
I really want a beautiful Android phone like this one, but unfortunately there are some things that are starting to turn me off, like the buttons that are too pushed in with the phone and the IR blaster being on the left, as well as the 2,300maH battery which would've been great for yesteryear but no so much to today's standards.
It's so hard to find a beautiful phone that performs like you want it and has top of the line specifications. I had the HTC One X and had to return it due to manufacturing defects and other problems with Sense (goddamn I hate Sense).
Sorry about that rant, just wanted to know about the black scuffs as that would be a dealbreaker for me.
Cnet.co.uk review got it wrong, it's not painted. It's anodized for sure.
Op, can you change the topic to: .... does not scuff?

While I'm not trying to start a war here, because I don't know this stuff as well as some others, I do know that the iPhone is anodized.
A large part of an anodizing process (and it's overall resistance against scuffs/scratches) comes down to the type of metal and its hardness (tempered vs. non-tempered) along with depth, dye, and the finishing process itself. Anodizing is quite a bit different than just spraying some paint on something and moving along - however, it does have the ability to chip/scuff almost just as easily (depending on the process and materials used).

I don't. Never did, and the time I went to a show and put my SII in a zippered pocket I got nasty scuffs, when the taking out.
But the pocket with the phone, is always the phone alone...
I love the Z1. So much. BUT:
- It's slippery as hell. I live in a humid climate and I nearly dropped it at least 10 times taking it out of my pocket when its a little wet.
- Speaker - Not a big issue as most of us use headphones anyway, but still annoying when showing videos to someone in public and all you hear is this mangled mess of tinny audio.
- Camera presets - Sony, for the love of god, please allow me to jump into my camera SAVE MY SETTINGS in a preset for those point and shoot moments!
Aside from that, this phone kicks a**. And yes, I have no problems with the 'viewing angles' - I am not a crustacean and my eyes are generally level with the screen during use.
What do you guys think? After some time with the device, what kinda tweaks could be made to improve it?
I'd prefer the back to be aluminium since I also think it's too slippery.
I use a lanyard wrist strap from an old sony camera instead of a case and I think it's great, it can't fall and it still looks sexy.
the only problem i have is how fragile it is. i'm on my 3rd one since release. one fell out of my pocket and broke (i was sitting down) and one pressed against my keys in my pocket and the screen shattered.

This would be very useful. 3rd party apps could provide this kind of functionality. But the problem is sony does not permit access to camera functions to these 3rd party apps. LG isn't any better, the nexus 5 & G2 are in the same boat too.
This means we're dependent on the stock app for complete functionality.
When will they allow saving presets in the stock app ? anybody's guess

I'm in the exact opposite situation weather wise, cold and dry. Really ****ing slippery unless you go around with sticky hands which wouldn't be too professional in my line of work.
I'd love to find some kind of grippy rubbery tape I could apply in stripes on the phone, preferably on the sides. Haven't found anything despite extensive searches.
Anyone else have a tip where such a thing could be found?
For me it is the Flashlight which is placed in the worst place. Everytime i do a picture with the flash i see in every shot the light coming from the bottom side and so 1/4 of the picture is "white"....

I'm in the exact opposite situation weather wise, cold and dry. Really ****ing slippery unless you go around with sticky hands which wouldn't be too professional in my line of work.
I'd love to find some kind of grippy rubbery tape I could apply in strike on the phone, preferably on the sides. Haven't found anything despite extensive searches.
Anyone else have a tip where such a thing could be found?

Thanks but I really don't want to add any bulk to the phone so I'd rather not have a case on it. Hence the grippy stripes idea.

https://www.west49.com/products/skate/grip-tape.html
Most malls in Canada and the USA have a West-49, a skater type shop.
If all else fails, most Canadian Tire, WalMart and other similar "we have everything you'd ever need" type stores sell tape with sandpaper type texture on one side. Just don't cheap out. Buy the vehicle quality 3M brand, as that's waterproof and moisture proof, and won't peel off from being taken in and out of a pocket frequently.

A gel case isn't bulk, that's the most minimal case you'll ever get for the Z1. Can hardly tell its even there if you colour match.
Grip tape will be a dust& lint magnet. yeah great for grip but how comfortable after a bit.

I have that problem too sometimes but it usually goes away if I wipe down the camera lens glass. Not sure why it fixes it, but it does.
ASF - it just gets in the way cause its scratched so easily
just use glass with oleophobic coating like every other phone manufacturer does - if you want additional protection buy a screen protector (which are much harder to scratch then the ones Sony uses on their phones..)
phone is a massive fingerprint magnet due to bad quality ASF..

What case are you using ?
I'm adding a new peeve - my wifi after switching to 4.3 is horrendous. Need like a super hi performance router to keep any connection and even in my car it takes ages to connect to bluetooth. Def some connectivity issues going on here after the update...
Also, I have night shots that are noisy AS HELL.
Any suggestions?
New one, loose USB port flap. No more waterproof for me

factory reset for the wifi. i had to do that to fix some other issues after updating (static during calls, proximity sensor not working)
I always do a factory reset after updates. It ends up saving you time...

Pet peeves..well I'll start off by saying I am in fact very happy with the handset, it's a beautiful device and performs beyond anything I'd ever expected.
But those peeves...
1: Magnetic charging is a novelty and in reality the magnets aren't powerful enough to use in the car as the cable just falls off.
2: A Navbar the size of a small country, Sony created a wonderful screen then filled a good deal of it with Navbar. I shouldn't have to root and use Xposed to reduce it.
3: No white balance settings...I mean come on, the older Z had it!
4: White phone... But black screen bezel totally ruins the looks of it, I picked the black one for that reason.
5: Rooting 4.3 (for now, I know this will change in the future) is a pain.
And finally.
The camera flash has more noise in it than a rock concert, with a case on it just ends up whitewashing the pictures.
But I'd still have an Xperia over ANY other handset.
