Memory management - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Themes and Apps

How should I manage the memory of the phone in terms of program installation? I mean if I should install system tools and the like in the main memory rather than the internal storage? Contrary, I assume that I should install a dictionary in the internal storage rather than the main memory. Is such an approach right?!
Thanks in advance for your help.
Regards,
Narciso

Try to dump everything that is possible on the Storage Mem.
When ever you install software choose Internal Storage as Instalation Drive.
Try keeping the Device memory as free as you can.

Thanks for the hint. That is actually what I have been trying to do. However, I can remember that I saw on the net some kind of warning that certain tools installed not on the main memory may cause problems, like for example backup software. That said, do you think that I should not worry about it and install eg Sprite Backup on the Internal Storage too?
Kindest regards,
Narciso

Formatting ExtROM

I encountered a unique problem:
When I wanted to format my JAM's ExtROM (I used ExtROM hack 1.12.00), it did not let me.
How can I override this problem?
ROM version 1.12.00
Radio version: 1.13.00
ExtROM version: [None]
If you look at my site, there's a magician bigstorage mod tutorial in the tutorials section.

Formatting ROM storage
I know how to use ExtROM, i did it already.
The problem is, when I want to format the ROM storage (there are leftovers from earlier usage) my JAM won't let me.
All I recieve is "Can't format selected storage card. Check if your card is unlocked".
I WANT to format the ROM storage. Can it be done?
Thanks..
The Ext_Rom is read only. You can only modify the System-Rom (often called Bigstorage here) in that way that you erase the contents of the Ext_Rom and increase the size of your internal storage (27 MB). Use the search for more information.
Re-define my question
I shall try to re-define my question:
How can I format the internal storage?
I think - there is no way. This is exact answer on your question.
Resco Explorer has an option to format the storage, but i dont want to try whether it works

Well, Pocket Mechanic can format internal storage disks, but it seems to have a problem seeing my Imate JAM. I think it is because of the name "Storage", which is close to "Storage Card". But there could be some other reason. The last phone I had (HP 6315) the Pocket Mechanic could format the File Store.

Rest assure - you cannot format i-Mate JAM storage using Resco Explorer. I tried - no success.
Still - is there any software which can format internal storage of trhe JAM?

Pocket mechanic has the capability to change the name of the Storage card, in which case it might see the internal "Storage" drive. But I haven't wanted to modify my system this way, since I would have to re-install all my files.
Formatting internal storage
Changing names does not guaranty formatting capabilities.
I can tell you that under other name the internal storage will not be formatted. I tried, using Pocket mechanic..
I faced the same problem the other day, I was unable to access my internal storage ... I couldnt even launch some applications.. the ppc would just hang.
I solved the issue by running this file 'psmformat' IT wiped out my internal storage and I couldnt access it, restarted my ppc and it took a long time to boot (indicating a low level format on a newly partitioned space).
When it booted up my internal storage was all good again.

Any apps to force *.cab file install to storage card?

Any apps to force *.cab file install to storage card?
well you can try to edit the cabs you need with WinCE Cab Manager for hardcode the paths to point in the storage card but some applications are needed to be in or to have parts of them in Windows folder or to run from the device, so this will not work in all applications
so wince doesn't support installing apps in the storage card?
storage gonna be a problem, unlike in smartphone it asks where to install it.
is it possible to save contacts and email, sms, mms messages directly to the storage card? i remember smartphones have a reg hack for that.
thanks.
it asks depending on the cab, most of the cabs i create i adjusted them not to ask where to install if they can not be installed on the storage card. but other cabs ask if you want to install on the device or the storage card
I have this issue with a couple of games 'Hawx' and 'Xtrakt' no matter what I do even selecting the option to install on storage card they install in the Phone Program files.. They both use nerly 15MB of space which is a big chunk of the 200MB available.

in other words: you are in the wrong section
I have 50MB left of the phone storage so 15MB is a lot, I don't see why the game can't be installed on the memory card.
Is there any app that will list where all the space is being used up, I do agree 200MD is quite a bit, but I have cleared out all temp files I can think of..

I guess you did not get my comment... the BA does not have 200 MB of storage, no matter what you do. MemMaid or SKTools might be ale to give you the info that you are looking for.

how to get more device space

ok I just got my diamond, and I had 43MB of free space, after installing xmods HD, and S2A, I only have 3 mb left, what can I uninstall to get more space???
I need like 6 more megs to install sprint picture mail cab and S2U2
1. kill your operator rom and update your rom with an optimized one (use the search!)
2. install software on storage card
try to use third part software, e.g. SKTools. Then use it for optimizing registry, clean orphan files and shortcuts, temporary files from Opera and others.
Try to store e-mail attachments at Internal Storage, short messages (SMS) as well.
Try to delete unnecessary files from main memory in My Documents folder. If you want to store some own music or ringtones - use My documents at Internal Storage.
BTW - don't try to delete files if you are not sure what it exactly is!!!
With SKTools you can move installed apps, like Google Maps (12mb), to the "Internal Storage".
I install some aplications in internal memory, but i find out that my device memory is reduced.. Why? Can i do anything for this? The reason for installing a game in internal is because i dont have much memory in device. But device memory is also reduced .. I cant understand it..
Ι made a mistake in the above , i install in internal storage , not internal memory that i wrote , but device memory is also reduced..
What does it mean?
If you install some apps in internal memory it would be "steal" exactly some internal memory.
But why can;t you install it into Internal Storage? Do you mean you have less than 4 GB Internal Storage? or you have a lot of stuff there?
There is no way to put files somewhere else: Internal Storage or Main memory...
I've just read my data: Program Memory: 38.45 MB free, Data storage 83.7 MB free (22.85 MB busy)....
I put to main memory only three or four apps (touchLock pro, Gscroll, and ... I don't remember)....
Other apps -> Internal Storage.
I know what takes so much memory. Extracted themes to TF3D. You know where I find every old unpacked themes?
I had a lot of them and each time after the installation of another theme in the place of my missing memory. I thought that these files are exchanged, but apparently it is not.

Storage Memory very low.

In Settings\System\Memory it is showing that I only have 6.26MB of storage memory free out of 43.5 total. When I click on the storage card tab it shows Storage as 9.93 total 9.09 in and only 0.84 Free. I have looked in file explorer and the storage is full of .CAB files a lot of the names start with Signed_UNI_o2UK_. Can someone tell what these may be and do I still need them as I have flashed the ROM.
This now causing problems with eWallet as the sync with PC seems to use the storage area for the temp files and there is now not enough space to do this. Does anyone know how to get more storage memory. I have tried moving some of the Signed_UNI_o2UK_ files but they are write protected. Any help would be gratefully received.
It would be good to know what ROM are you using
If it´s a WM6.5 it´s normal that you have low RAM free as it´s very heavy
Try installing a 6.1 ROM

Once it's gone, it is gone. Unless it exists somewhere else, it is gone.
ouch, that really hurts... there should be a way to undelete from the phone's memory. if there is one, i hope you find it.
There is still hope...
Hi, don't just assume that once you've deleted it, it's gone. There is still hope for your data. You see, when you delete something it doesn't actually get removed, the OS just "hypnotizes" itself into forgetting the data is there. Over time the data will become overwritten (depending on how much you used the sdcard your pictures were on).
There are special programs designed to recover deleted files, I recommend Recuva by Piriform (same guys who make CCleaner).
http://www.piriform.com/recuva
Just point it to your sdcard and scan. Again, depending on how much you've used your device they may either be completely gone or easily recoverable.
Good luck

I second knobbyhtccruise's suggestion. Dont use any apps that may write to your phone memory. Just try ActiveSync method and use this software i have attached below.
Unzip the file to desktop. Connect ur HD2 via AS.
Run Restoration.exe and in Drive see if you can access phone memory. Goodluck
No data recovery software can access the phone memory of HTC or else other smart phone etc
Can't be saved dude. No go dude. No go.

Try http://www.datarecovery.com/. It helped me. It's not free, but you can try if it finds your files for free. Does it find it, you have to buy it to be able to save the files. Worth a try! Good luck, man!
Firs of all, many thanks to all the respondents,
perhaps someone would be kind enough to help me enhance my understanding?
As far as I know a file system allocates space for files & directories, when it is told to delete something it does not do that but instead merely marks the space as available by setting a bit / flag on that entry. This being why it is imperative NOT to write to the file system in the case of an accidental deletion & a recovery program merely reverses the process to mark the space from available to unavailable & displays the entry again
in some expert hands even a hex editor can be used to undelete / recover data
to my limited knowledge both the internal memory & the sd card use a fat32 file system
given the above, I do not understand what is the difference & why data can be recovered from the sd card but not from the main memory. Perhaps someone more qualified can set me straight please?
A random thought - would there be any use setting up a dual boot to android & would that help / harm my case - thought being that there may be more tools available?
once again TIA
M
once a file is deleted, the space is marked as resuable. Therefore, stop using the device because every of your activity may be destorying (overwriting) your deleted data beyond recovery.
SD is recoverable because you can mount it to a PC using a card reader, or even using the HD2 directly. Then most software can read the storage and try to recover. Phone member is presented to the PC as a connected device and it may not be possible for other PC software to access it like a storage device. If you can find a tool that copies the whole 476MB (or whatever) memory to somewhere else (PC hard disk, SD card, any passive storage that is not a phone), then those software will probably to able to handle it.
here is a program that can undelete files from external and internal storage. good luck.

I assume it might help if he has NAND android, otherwise it won't.
did some searching and found two programs that may or may not help on WinMo
Wizcode Unformat Mobile
Wizcode Undelete Mobile
not sure if they can access phone storage. but you can try. hopefully, you haven't fiddled much with your phone since then. it's been about two months.
I believe Wizcode undelete mobile works on storage card only.

so I think the only hope is by sending it to a service center hoping they have tools to mount device memory as removable device, and tools to recover deleted files.
and next time, save your photos on your SD.
if you know anyone with a copy of your photos, now is the time to start calling friends.
