what to do with my Dell Axim x51v? - Advantage X7500, MDA Ameo General

Have been enjoying the 5 inches Dopod u1000 for some time now.
Yesterday, i went through my drawers and decided to activate my old dell axim x51v. Yes, although the screen is smaller but I am amazed at how clear the fonts are and how readable the screen is. I am so reluctant to sell it. But then again, what am i doing with 2 pocket pc? I certainly can't sell my dopod u1000 because there is nothing like it in the market at the moment.
Any one of you had to go throught this dilemma I am going through? How did you overcome?

I couldn't sell mine. I am keeping my Axim as a back up.

good to know that I'm not alone facing this dilema.
The Dell Axim X51v is really a marvelous pocket pc.
Of course, Dopod u1000 (x7500) is also great and all rounded - all features.
wonder how many are like us. keeping 2 pocket pc 's.
ALso, wonder how they coping with 2 pocket pc's

If you have a spouse you can do what I have done with my X50v. My wife is a TV buff and I have installed Pocket TV Browser on it so she can get the complete TV schedules for 14 days in advance. Now my wife cannot complain that I spend too much time with computers as she is also addicted (TV and PTV Browser).
It also means I have a backup for my X7501.

hey ! that's a good idea. get wife to use it and take care of it at the same time.
also happy to know 1 more person who decided to hang on with this 'superb' pocket pc - dell axim.
things that keeps me from completely going back to axim has to do with x7500 features that axim doen't gave.
can use 3g internet service
camera
5 inches screen
how nice if axim has all these features.
today i actually used my axim when i went out and kept my u1000 (x7500) in a bag. i must say i did not struggle with anything at all.
but with that said i believe i'll be using my u1000 most of the time and not my axim since i now have the u1000.
hope to hear more from anyone who are keeping their axim even though they already own the x7500.
also hope to hear about how they have found ways are using or not using the axim as they decided to keep it.
glad to know it is common and not crazy after all to keep 2 pocket pc 's. ha ha

Well, I still have my HP 4700 that I've kept up-to-date. The only use it gets anymore is as a universal remote/TV scheduler and as a external storage device for my camera as I picked up a 128GB CF card when CompUSA was doing their going out of business sale.

Use it to play PSX games. XD

yup
Sounds about right, surely with the Graphic chip + proper drivers (htc suck) in the Axim 51V, its a much better media player.
I think I would just spend my time playing Quake 3 GL on it
but........does it support USB host?
I dont think these things support windows mobile 5/6 either.....is that right?

Err, Afaik, Dell did'nt make Axim 51v - HTC did. So, if you like its graphic chip + drivers, HTC being the ODM of this device, should be thanked. No?

I sold my axim x51v to my brother when I bought an x7501. I really missed having the infrared for TV remote. Wherever I was, Dr. office, restaurant, wherever, I had control of the TV. Oh well, not the most important feature.
They should have just released the axim x51v without the CF slot, and made it phone capable, maybe a jog wheel. Axim x51v was a great device, but its just ridiculous (if your ppc goes everywhere with you) to have to carry around an axim, and ..... I don't know a moto razor. Those days are long gone. I bet its really hard to sell an x51v anymore.
On a side note, I get this magazine called Extreme Geek, and they have a keychain remote with the number pad, and volume/channel control. You don't have to program it, I don't know how it works, but it works with every TV I have tried it on.

I really liked my Axim x51v, in fact all I really wanted was an Axim with a bigger screen. Unfortunately they don't make a ppc any larger than a 4 inch screen and I wanted at least 5 inches.
I don't use the Advantage as a phone, I don't even think of it as a hybrid phone. I have a small nokia for phone usage. Not that I use it much either, I don't like phones and only keep it for emergencies.
The Advantage/Athena is the only pocket like pc that has the larger screen. In a world gone mad with small, smaller, tiny devices at least one manufacturer saw the usefulness of having a pocket like pc with a descent size screen.
Like I said, I'm keeping my Axim as a backup, just in case something happens to my Advantage x7501.

bjkel,
Same here. From the day I bought my dopod u1000, I wanted to use only its Pocket pc features. I belong to the group of users where the phone feature of this 5 inches screen was not in my mind at all. Yes, same here. If Axim had 5 inches screen, i would never have bought the Dopod u1000. There is pros and cons with all in one machines. My friend used to have a TV with video player, 2 in 1 device, back in those days. I remember at one time the video player feature broke down and he had to send it for repairs. For days, he had to do without TV. So, I have no problem carrying a small phone for my communication needs and My u1000 as my instant on "umpc."
eaglesteve,
It is interesting piece of information. HTC is behind Axim x51v (the excellent device).
Yes, I have never used the CF slot of my Axim at all. Quite redundant. I know that it worked fine because I did test it out with a CF card but it just add weight to the device.
BTW, My Axim with wm6.1 latest rom be a russian programmer, "Football" is simply snappy and powerful.
I love it so much and I just can't bring myself to sell it.
So, here I am with 2 pocket pc's. Still haven't found a way to use 2 pocket pc simultaneously. Still trying to get ideas from some of you who has this dilemma. Until I do, it will just be left in my drawer as a backup and occassionally, bringing it out to read some ebooks. If i use it to create word doc files it will be troublesome to sync with my dopod u1000. So just ebooks, music, movies, internet browsing I guess.

I still have my 4700 also and its running WM6...Sometimes i play movies on it and cant believe how well it works..you should see how well mobile shell works on it!!..a fully ripped DVD around 800MB with no changes will play flawlessly on it! It just goes to show you how much advantage it is having drivers for your graphics chip...wish my 7501 worked as well in that department
Anyone think we will ever get support for the graphics chip in our Athena’s?

One of the things I like about the AximX51v is that you can swap the cf and the sd cards out easily as opposed to the Advantage. I recently bought a Redfly (the Redfly's drivers are very agressive). With Card export the Redfly recognizes my Axim's cf and sd as external drives. So I'm using my Axim as a cf reader/note-taker/wallet for now. Eventually I suppose I'll trade my 6gb microsd for a 16gb. Plus the agressive usb drivers in the redfly recognizes powered usbs like they never did for me on the advantage so I might look into getting one of those. But for now, the Axim's 12 gb cf will hold alot of ebookbooks and and audiobooks.

well i am another 7501 user with an old X51v still collecting dust in my drawer, and I called that laziness. I am just too lazy to put it on ebay.
at the beginning when i used my 7501, i also didn't use its phone feature. but now i am using it as a phone too, of course with a BT headset to protect my privacy.
a few years ago i posted something in aximsite saying that my ideal pda would have a 5 inch screen with 24-bit color. i guess HTC listened, and although the 7501 screen is only 16 bit color, it's LED instead of LCD, which kind of compensates for it. so, until the next 5 in screen PDA/Phone with more powerful processor comes out, i am sticking with my 7501.

good idea

Now that's a good idea! Use my axim as a card reader or external storage drive since axim can now support sdhc. Hmmm....
I have just installed a 3g (hsdpda) sim card in my Dopod u1000 and i can now surf the internet happily anywhere without beng limited to just wifi spots. That is one thing the Athena can do that axim could not - unless there is such thing as a compact flash card that accepts 3G sim cards ???
One of the best thing i did for my axim was to install an extended battery. I used to carry a spare battery with me when the axim was my 24/7 ppc. After I started using the extended battery, the axim just kept on and on and on ... before i need to recharge. GREAT ppc! Will keep my axim as long as I can.

Which Redfly drivers did you load onto the x51v? I am trying to get my x50v (flashed to WM6.1) to work with the Redfly. Tried some HP IPAQ drivers but it locked the x50v and I needed to do a hard reset...

cphilip ,
Keep your dell axim x51v , until u can find a 3000 or 4400mah high capacity super duper lithium ion battery that the battery manufacturers coming up in the future for your u1000 , there is no way our current u1000 std battery is gonna replace or compete with yr ancient but very-very long lasting extended battery pack of this dell axim that u have bought years ago ! Coming to this dell battery of yours and looking at yr old u1000 battery with the silver metal pin broken off and missing , i notice u have ' sticked ' two small medium thick black double sided tape on this battery , probably to make the contact pins and the points of the battery to connect securely and tightly when u close the battery cover - right ? Why not someone or some manufacturer make an extended battery of - let's say 6600 mah capacity , with the shape of our current u1000 battery to slot in as usual , but further with also extended out rectangular square shaped long enough to run along the full length of our u1000 in one piece - just like some pda or netbook extended battery , and to close the battery , u need to take out or cut away the battery cover , maybe drill a small hole of 3 to 5 mm diameter or maybe 2 holes , and u slot one or two pins thru it ( the alluminium body ) ending into the body of the battery and locked the battery by that way , then we all can have a 6600 mah battery that will outlast any normal handphones at last - baby ! What say all u athenians owners ? This long lasting battery will make our day i am sure - jimmunsw

Same Boat...
Same as all the above ppl..I have a drawer full of older phones/PDA's
Axim, HP 4700, Hermes, Tilt, Apache..and 3 other older PPC phones I cant remember what the names were. Even the old Casio E-125 w/all the add on's (camera, modem etc..)..also a few of the Sony clam shell palm ones - Clie UX50(have always loved the form factor of this one!) , NX70V, NZ90
Oh..and a BB.old one w/ a antenna
Yes..I have issues

Oh..and in rply to original question..what do I do with extra phones/pda's? mostly they sit in my drawer. But a few times a month my son or daughter will take one with him/her to church and mess around on drawing programs (Numpty is awesome for keeping them occupied for hrs!). Its kinda funny because we are all sitting in a row in church and all messing with PPC's
Some are better for playing emulators than others (better D pad, the HP 4700 sucks for this..prob the ONLY drawback for this device)
My favorite (other than the 7501) is the HP 4700 hands down! Plays any vid I through at it, super fast and sleek design with an awesome screen and decent batt life still. I keep this one in new condition..well most are like that anyway..axiom is the most beat up looking cause my son usually gets that one when he wants to mess around with a PPC.
Other than my kids using them I'm not sure why I keep them...
Wife never needs any cause she loves her iphone

is there a better phone/pda

hi all looking at getting a trinity 3600 because i need stanalone gps, pda and a phone that takes my 3 sim card. just wondering b4 i take the plunge is there another phone that will meet my requirements that anybody thinks is better than the 3600 cheers
Other devices...
Well, the HTC Advantage can do all the same things, plus it has a VGA screen, but is a much more bulky device. The only other device I'm aware of that does all that the Trinity does is the Nokia N95. The Nokia has the advantage of a 5MP camera (only 2mp on the Trinity), but it doesn't run pocket PC (it's Symbian I think).
Other than that, I'm not aware of any others. The Trinity is a very good device, you'd be hard pushed to beat it!
Lee
but Advantage i read can only be used as a phone using a headset
it dont have a mic or something
polaris the upcomming replacement for Artemis but it's not out yet
another option could be Kaiser is another option if one is not bothered by the extre thickness the keyboard adds or even pref a keyboard
thanks for your replies the n95 i think you have to pay for the gps service I dont think it has a built in sirfstar 3 chipset or any alike so i would not go for that but i will have a look at the kaiser cheers
Yes, N95 runs Symbian, but no touchscreen. I've tried it a few days ago - much slower than my N73.
Other options
As of now the Trinity is one of the best PDA'a around.
Other phones that you can consider are the Asus P535/525 series and the Eten M700.
These phones have all the feature the Trinity has and then some more. Like all phones, the Trinity also has its fair share of problems.
I was about to buy the Trinity but holding out for the Kaiser, it has all the feature that I want in a phone.
Just my 2 cents worth.
Cheers,
Hiren
i'll wait for polaris or nike myself
dont want a slideout keyboard
polaris looks really good just took a look out in october ultra thin aswell says 3.5 in screen does that make the phone bigger than the mda 3 compact and is it defo 3g because it was the mda i wanted but only 2g
hi...
is there a better phone/pda? interesting question....
If you are using it mostly like a phone I wouldnt go for the trinity because of two issues:
* I need a quite strong GSM signal to get acceptable sound quality. People I call often complain about the quality of my voice when compared to a 'normal' phone. Maybe is my device, people in this forum say, but I tried some proposed remedies without success.
* Screen is nearly invisible outdoors on a sunny day
If you are using mostly PDA features, the trinity may be an interesting option. The rest of features work really well, specially GPS.
Beware a new (pricey) trinity version is to be released soon (or maybe already). Hopefully they solve these issues plus the paint peeling off thing. Then it would be the perfect phone.
Depends on what you value!
If you need the phone for business, don't get a PDA phone coz the reception is NOT 100% reliable...
What do you need the PDA for?
All in all, it might be better to get a TomTom GO, then a cheap phone with bluetooth that can connect to TomTom!
But as previously said, D810X is meant to be coming out, no idea when and how much though.
D810x is out in Australia as the HTC p3600i.
i think dell axim x51 is very good for gaming but it dont have a camera!
Polaris looks its gonna be great! I remember reading it only has 400mhz cpu :S

what are people moving on to?

The Universal has severed me well for several years, but I feel that there must be something newer, shiner out there.
(I basically want a new toy)
I love having a proper keyboard, the ability to open word/excel files as well as web browsing and email.
Any recommendations
Ash
I got an XDA Orbit - but still keep going back to my Exec. It may be bulky but I still love the flexibility of it.
Take a look at HTC Athena or HTC Shift, its bulky but a step up indeed.
I'm not moving on, the Uni is still the best IMHO. No other phone has a full keyboard (including number buttons), VGA screen, normal sized SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone socket, 3G, and massive extended batteries of over 5000mAH. The Athena is not counted, since you need a headset or speakerphone to use it as a "phone", which I find too inconvenient.
I will not upgrade until a phone comes out which has most if not all of the above features.
I upgraded to O2 XDA Atom Life a couple of weeks ago. I never used the keyboard of universal, so, being keyboardless on atom life does not hurts. 1gb rom is a big plus. I've stored everything on my device(including a 600mb movie too ). Its fast(624MHZ) too. Its qvga, but, at 2.8', it looks sweet. And hey, its beautiful from outside too
Overall, a happy guy. Impressed with quanta's hardware quality too.
edit: here is the review of it on my website
http://gadgetmix.com/reviews/atomlife/atomlife.htm
Kaiser - the HSDPA and GPS nearly makes up for the lack of VGA screen and full number row.
Surur
I'm upgraing to... The universal! Yep apart from going to the athena which i dont have the money for nothing compares to the Universal. Must admit the Kaiser did appeal to me but with it's GPS chip, but a 400 Mhz processor and QVGA persuaded me to that the Uni was better. Now if HTC was to put a GPS chip in the Uni? It'd be perfect and have everything.
Psi
when is the omni expected? any news?

My athena is gone!!!!

Hey guys,
i recently traded my belloved Athena for a Sony vaio UX 380N,
i used my Athena mostly to send pictures using pocket phojo
and read email and navigation, and for a pocket pc it worked like a dream,
no crashes, well the magnetic design was kinda akward for me
but all in all it was a great little machine, working on a umpc
is different though its slower but i benefit greatly since i have a
better display and a photo shop installed. For me having a device
with pc and ppc combined would be a dream come true.
What do you think?
Tito
isnt that a Shift? dream come true is possibly not the word for it though. pipedream come true? daydream come true? the problem is it came true and it's there if you really want it.......
Everybody is entitled to their own preferences for the gadgets they use. Frankly I love the viao more than the athena. It's small, it does have a phone and it works with a full windows xp. The downside is the price. USD 2k for a phone is too much for me. If a small screen fits well with you while using photoshop, that's also fine. Personally, I perfer a 21 inch or bigger screen when I do graphic intensive stuff like color separations. Good luck on your new gadget!!!
I work as a photojournalist and have to send daily asigments on loacation
or real time so carring a 20" imac or even a small laptop isnt really and option...
Let me know if you get bored of the UX380, I may trade you for a X7500

You were using your GPS on your Athena before. You've given that up in the process?
How do you find the battery life of UX380N and its speed ? Do you listen your MP3 on it? What about your PIM? Is the lack of instant on capability a problem for you or no? Does it have a phone or are you having a separate smaller phone with MP3/GPS?
OQO Model 2 looks a lot sexier, but as you said the price is also much higher. I like its 5 inch 800x480 screen.
I was using gps on my Athena a lot, I also liked build in hsdpa modem a lot,
sure ux takes forever to boot and you can put it to sleep(crashes sometimes) but i dont know different tools all together. Mostly i like ux becouse its a regular pc and its more versatile if you ask me....
The better mobile PC is... my HOME/OFFICE PC
I have a vista mobile, an XP mobile, I just use the athena as mobile PC as 5' device to connect, via RDP or logmein.
THEN I have some movies, music, PIM and e-mail on-the go
Why Athena? Size matters for remote PCs
Well ive had it with Vista, i sold Vaio UX(with profit), i desided to go back to PPC and got a new Hp hx 4700 with wm 2003 and iam back to step one,
i had with umpc, giant PPCs(Athena, Qtek 9000 etc.), this baby is kinda unstable(use backup a lot) but it flys in Pocket Phojo and gps is way better
with an external antena(have one built it under the bonet). Iam waiting for
better device to use as a mobile editing station/navigation/office work,
i realized that smal screens (5" and smaller) and small keyboards just doesnt
work good in my hands. I prefer using OS X better than Win devices,
Macbook Air is lightweight but not really light or small enough,
so the search continues. Yeeezzz.....

Questions about WinMo Pro on the Shift

Hi I know a couple people here stated they have WinMo Pro 6 running on the "SnapVue" portion of the Shift. Excuse me if I explained that wrong. My question is what resolution does it run in? 640x480, 800x480, 320x240? And Can it access the phone portion(assuming from comments that it will in fact have voice)?
I'm really getting excited about the Shift since people are saying that in fact can run full blown Windows Mobile Pro. Why HTC didn't include/market that from the beginning is beyond me. It would TOTALLY seperate the Shift from any other UMPC on the market. Instead they aren't marketing it and it sits in a pile of other boring UMPC's. HTC's marketing practices as of late are really questionable. If it does have voice I'm crossing my fingers there is an earpiece built in. I doubt it but I'm hoping. Yes I know I'll look like an uber nerd using it that way but I can't stand BT headsets and barely talk on my devices that much anyway. Thanks.
Hello juiceppc,
I'm not sure at 100% about what I will say.. but I think that the resoluion in SnapVue is 640*480 (there are 2 black areas at each side of SnapVue).
For the phone portion ... humm .. it's difficult to know, but we will try the best to have it ! It's sure that we will be able to read SMS... but nothing is sure about receiving and giving calls.. we have to wait for the final version of the Shift to test.
Just stay tune in this forum... and you will have your answer... As Soon As Possible !

hi
i realy like the Shift, but if can run wm6 full ... I'm excited!
there is a problem: the 2 operating system must use the some devices in the same time (bt, wifi, etc).
for browse on the net, or for chat, the wm6 is enough, and is not necessary to run vista.
and if htc release the win xp drivers, the battery life can be bigger.
but i cant find anywhere a documented review about shift....(everybody is happpy, the shift is the best...) no phone, no gps, the image cant rotate, no wm6, no xp drivers...
i think the comunity can resolve this problem but the feedback is verry low.
the device is not released .. so stop to anticipate everything ... we will try to make the Shift the best device EVER... but we need to get one to test everything on it !
I don't care about XP (it's a completely horrible O.S. .. and Vista is 10000 times better) but for the rest, we ALL want GPS, PHONE and full WM6 .. even without that, the SHIFT is an innovative device.. and is much better than every other device... so WAIT and you'll see.
why buy a HTC Shift?
I have a Dopod U1000, its the best device ever. I have a Sony TZ notebook as well. I was thinking why bother to buy the HTC Shift?
- Battery life 2 hours Vs Sony 11 hours
- it runs on a paralysed WM6 that is probably not going to be that useful Vs Dopod U1000
- the screen resolution is poor Vs Sony beautiful crystal clear screen
- HTC Shift probably runs on hard disk Vs Sony runs on flash memory,
- This is the first PC by HTC Vs Sony many years of R&D experience
I have purchased the Samsung Q1 as well as the small Sony UMPC before. Both proof to be quite useless. When I bring them out. I have to wait a few minutes for it to boot up. After using for just awhile the battery goes flat. You will be left wondering why do u ever bother to bring such a heavy device around. Trust me folks battery life is important. If you buy the HTC Shift after a month the battery life drops to probably 1 hour. In addition, the screen size is way too small to run Windows. I am very sure there will be many second hand models in ebay after 2 weeks of launching
Pls think twice..

I totally disagree with your comment :
- Battery life 2 hours Vs Sony 11 hours
First .. I bet that the shift can be used about 5 days without using Windows Vista (only SnapVue or WM6). And the Sony is twice the price of the Shift ... ergh!!!!
- it runs on a paralysed WM6 that is probably not going to be that useful Vs Dopod U1000
You seem to be paralysed when talking about it ... the WM6 will be sufficiently well working (even without removing SnapVue) because of ability to install Cab .. and I believe that Full WM6 will be easy to have. The Dopod doesn't have Windows Vista ... and having WM5 or even WM6 on the Dopod is exactly the same of having SnapVue on the Shift.
- the screen resolution is poor Vs Sony beautiful crystal clear screen
I can put the Shift in my pocket ...but not the Sony. 7" is the perfect resolution for me (I have tried 2 Shifts and I really like the screen size and the Shift keyboard). At home I plug a VGA cable .. and here we go !
- HTC Shift probably runs on hard disk Vs Sony runs on flash memory,
The sony runs on flash memory? MMh maybe... but it's twice the price of the shift... and unable to put it in the pocket... bad !
- This is the first PC by HTC Vs Sony many years of R&D experience
I have tried 2 Shifts.. and it was working perfectly, as fast as I want ..... so I don't care about the years of R&D experience of Sony.
Here's my thoughts... I'm not trying to put you down, or to say that you are wrong .. but features depends on the way you want to use it , and you use devices. We are talking about 3 completely different devices.... and I don't believe that any other "released" device can change my opinion that the Shift is the only good device on the market right now (because of 2 CPU and 2 OS).
How about we keep our heads about us people and stay objective.
Comparing a Sony TZ to the shift is a useless comparison. One is a notebook, the other an umpc. Each serves a different purpose for different people and different tasks.
Koala, if you can put the shift in your pocket than I would hate to see your sense of fashion. Im sorry I dont doubt you could shove the shift into your pocket but show some decorum....theres better umpcs to shove down there that would look less ridiculous.
Remember people, different tasks, different people = different devices. For me ill probably have to seriously look at the Shift if WM can be made practical, if the GPS can be enabled (remember the P3600 ppl).
Having owned an X7500 I found it to be a great device, very handy however there are some tasks WinMo just can do as well as full Windows. The excellent, connectivity, battery life, and quick responsiveness of WinMo will be ideal for me with the option to flick it to Vista at a whim for those times when im away from my desk and need to do work on the move. If it has GPS and phone functions can be enabled than thats just a bonus

same for me ... it's not ridiculous to put it in my pocket because it looks like if my pocket was empty ... nobody can see that I have something in my pocket... and when I have a bag with me, it will be in my bag .. but I can visit friends without having a bag and without having to look like "coming to work".
htc shift
I just bought the htc shift a few days ago. There are several problems.
1. I unlocked the full WM6, the problem is that file explorer cannot read the sd card. As such I have to install all the applications on the internal memory. This is not very good as it prompts me that the internal memory is very low.
2. Another problem is the contrast in snapvue. After reseting snapvue, the standard high contrast comes out again. U cannnot lower he backlight.
3. the sync between wm6 and the pc works sometimes. I use USB tool. Most often it does not work and is very slow.
Overall the built quality is good but it still cannot replace my dopod u1000

Nerd question about the Athena...

Hi,
I am considering to get me an Athena and I need some help and advice.
I already own:
1x Blue Angel
2x Universal
1x HP iPaq 514 Voice Messenger
1x VDA GPS (aka Toshiba G710)
I also have an Asus eeePC 701.
My SIM has an internet contract included (100 MB download/month) and I have an USB Internet adapter which I can use i.e. with my eeePC.
Having said this, you probably understand I am a nerd and I like to "collect" phones and gadgets. The reason is simple: I don't drink, I don't smoke, I don't waste money on anything, so at least, I think, I can get me some nice phones from time to time. All were bargains, most I got from eBay. The reason I like smartphones is that i carry them around all the time, so I can really have a benefit of owning them. A PS3, for example, may be a nice piece of hardware, but I would not have much time at home to really make use of it.
What do I want to know?
Basically, if you guy's can use the Athena as a phone. Do you REALLY use it as your sole mobile phone, or is it too big and clumsy (specially having to use BT headphone) to make calls?
The Universal is big, but it does fit nice into my back pocket of the jeans - how do you carry the Athena around?
What are the real advantages of an Athena, compared to a Universal? The screen resolution is the same (I guess having a bigger screen, will make the RealVGA usefull - on the Universal things get far too small), the CPU speed can be the same, by overclocking the Universal (actually not overclocking, but letting it run at full speed), the GPS is nice, but can be overcome with an external one (like the one I have).
I know these are lame questions, but 250-300 Euro is still a lot of cash and I want to make sure i don't regret it.
My major concern is that the device is not usable as a phone. I hate carrying two devices with me and that is exactly the problem I have with the eeePC: it's screen is too small to replace a proper laptop and to replace the MDA Pro, I would have to carry two devices with me. That's too much.
So any feedback is appreciated, as I am wondering what would be more USEABLE on a daily basis: an eeePC 1000 (10" screen, 1.6Ghz, 160 GB HDD, battery up to 6 hours...) for around 380 Euro, or an Athena second hand at eBay for around 300 Euro.
The eeePC 1000 has the advantage of replacing a laptop, but the disadvantage of not replacing a phone.
I know, long post, but please shed some light into this.
Thanks,
vma
x7510 a great device

I was a proud owner of a Blueangel for 4 years and loved it. I started to get tired of it a couple years ago and then I found xda-developers and discovered how to upgrade and turn my old WM2003SE device into a top notch WM6.1 device. Needless to say with all the smaller screen, slower CPU devices on the market I stayed with my trusty BA. That is until I found the x7510. My BA lives in a drawer in the bedroom now, I keep it charged so I have it if I need it, and I use my Athena exclusively for all my phone/PDA needs. I carry it in the back pocket of my blue jeans and it fits fine.
My major concern is that the device is not usable as a phone. I hate carrying two devices with me and that is exactly the problem I have with the eeePC: it's screen is too small to replace a proper laptop and to replace the MDA Pro, I would have to carry two devices with me. That's too much.

I have not regretted my upgrade from the BA to the Athena for a second. The only reason I have not sold my BA yet is becuase I have had the Athena for less than 1 month and am keeping it as a backup. I plan to go this weekend to the local market and have a custom belt carry case made for it. I am in Kuwait and it will not cost me much at all for this. The only reason I am doing this is for the added convenience not becuase it is required.
7501 is my everyday device
If yoi look at my sig. I also own quite a few devices. Since acquiring my 7501 6 months ago, I have not used any other of my devices. I used a BT headset with all of my oyher devices anyway. The 7501 is by far the best device I have ever owned.
You can turn the volume all the way down and hold it like a regular phone, with the mic hole by your mouth. Its not perfect and not private in a quiet room, but its useable. I also hate carrying a BT headset all the time for private conversations, but my Jabra BT8010 also gives me caller ID and vibrate, "fixing" several of the major problems with the Athena all at one time. Also gives me a decent stereo headset for MP3 and radio streaming.
I've had mine a year now and will never be able to go back to a smaller phone. The screen is just so much more useable than most other pdas or phones.
Thank you for your replies.
I think I will keep it on hold, though.
I have been researching the Ameo and basically understand that the 7500 and 7501 are basically similar and feature a real Hitachi Microdrive HDD.
The 7510 has a different keyboard and a 16GB SDD Flashdisk and requires a different ROM. I believe it cannot be SIM-Unlocked either.
There seems to be a problem with the Microdrive failing and having read-errors. This is a turn-off for me, when buying from ebay, as this fault is not easy to detect and proove, but surely may be a reason to get rid of such a device at ebay... Yeah, call me a suspicious guy...
The 7510, on the other hand, lacks the joystick and I definitly require that for my ebook reading, which I love. Paginating by touching the screen all the time is not very appealing.
Then there are those who say: go for the 7501, forget about the HDD and just get a 16GB SDHC. The point is: I can get that for my Universal!
So now I am wondering what REAL benefits I would have from an Ameo and I guess I will wait for either a superb bargain at ebay, a new one on sale at a local store (doubt that, however) or until the prices drop further at ebay (below 200 Euro).
Thangs again.
Cheers,
vma
Hi,
I have purchased an Athena these days and here is what I have to say to all those considering the move from the Universal to the Athena.
1) The Universal reached the 100 Euro mark at eBay, while the Athena (7500 version) is being sold at 200 Euro. These are the prices at ebay.de for the MDA Pro / T-Mobile Ameo versions.
2) First impression: the Athena is big. And when I say big, I mean it! I already had played with one in a store, but actually owning one is different, because only then you notice it won't fit in any of your pockets! After using it for 2 days, I picked up my Universal and found myself smiling at the "small" size of it!
3) Second impression: damn! It is a huge device... I will have to carry it in my hand if I want to take it with me. I mean, other people carry a book or a filofax. I now carry this super phone...
4) Funtionality: there is everything you can think of. You get highspeed mobile internet, WLAN, Bluetooth, all possible GSM standards, motion sensor, huge ROM/RAM memory, 8GB microdrive, GPS, ... The Universal not only lacks onboard GPS, it is struggeling with having only 64MB RAM. That is a limitation for the upcoming WM 6.5 firmware releases being cooked. And even with WM 6.1 some limitations exist. Soldering extra 64MB on my Universal is too expensive in my opinion.
5) Screen: the screen is fantastic! Compared to the Universal, though it has the same resolution, it is big enough for the eyes to take advantage of small fonts. After using the Athena, I now look at the Universal screen and I have to admit it is a little bit too small for such a resolution.
6) Keyboard: despide several online reviews stating the opposite, I do like the touch and feel of the keyboard. i would have prefered separate numeric keys, though. Also, I like the Universal's keyboard design better. Having a separate magnetic keyboard is less functional, I think.
7) Pros of the Athena:
- big screen
- speed: fast device
- speed: internet is very fast, pages load much quicker than on the Universal
- GPS: nice to have everything in one device
- memory: yeah! 128 MB RAM plus 8GB storage, plus Mini-SD slot... That rocks! And you can always use a Micro-2-Mini SD card adapter to use the cheaper and more available MicroSD cards
- overall exquisit looking noble device: if you are a hacker, you will survive a lonely day in a hotel room with this beast!
8) Cons of the Athena:
- too big to fit any pocket, specially back trouser pocket...
- keyboard is a bit odd
*** CONCLUSION ***
So, is it worth the change from the Universal?
No.
You should not want to CHANGE from the Universal to the Athena.
You SHOULD have an Athena as a second device, which you use on special days:
- boring days in the office/mother in law/waiting rooms
- meetings (this 200 Euro second hand device will kill all the attention normally spent over iPhones and similar phones at over 600 Euro)
- trips (planes, train and hotels)
Plus, it is simply a gorgeous device, which does appeal to any hacker!
Hope this helped anyone considering which phone to get...

Just buy it and try it out , it will not cost you an arm and a leg !! If you find it not suitable for whatever reasons , just sell quick it away at 30% loss , you probably bought many devices already , one more wont make you suffer that much i am sure , but many of advantage owners from day one it launched till now really do love it , some to the extremes too , so are you one of us ? , only you can answer this yourself , cheers , take care and enjoy - ok ?
