anyone try this scratch remover? - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

http://www.elitextreme.com/displexx.html
i wonder if this stuff really works, anyone tried it?

yeah, nothing great to report, it makes only a small difference, IMO

Just in case you missed it, be careful using this on a kaiser.
"Attention: use only on non-coated surfaces and plastics; when used on mobile phones, treat only the transparent portions of the display lens. Not for use with touch screen displays."

NEVER!!!
As an official service engineer (working for Nokia and Samsung), I know: NEVER NEVER NEVER use display polish **** on touch screens!!!

size and build quality

how do you guy's live with the chunky size of the unit and is the build quality as bad as some reports ?
thank you
i am on my 4th mda
1st: crashed a lot and keyboard not quite set right into the frame - wireless manager button sticks up slightly
2nd: metal top plate offset and scratching my ear
3rd: loud creaky hinge with loud clicks
4th: camera fault - big white dot on photo's
on my 1st exec i have a misaligned keyboard as with mda 1, and minor camera pixel dropouts
i think build quality is pretty awful, and will keep* my exec and get the mda swapped out for a vario or something.
* might take it back and see if I can get a fully functional device from them, after all I paid 99 pounds for it
I had one MDA Pro and now I have an XDA Exe and both were/are excellent, great quality devices.
About the size - I had all the previous XDAs so I got used to the big phones already. I'm not using any bluetooth headsets, and I always carry it in my jeans back pocket , no problems at all for me.
I am on my first and only Jas Jar - the thing is brilliant- no problems at all. As for size, I always use mine with a BT headset and voice command when making or recieving a call, so no problem there either.
I am on my 3rd Jasjar. First was taken away by my boss. 2nd had an Arabic/English keyboard and did not like it. Now on 3rd unit for over 2 months. All had excellent build quality. No complaints from me whatsoever.
Kind Regards
Mine seems fine so far. Havent noticed any problems and im usually one for spotting things. Was worried about dead pixels but both my wizard and uni are clear as a bell.
i find the entire flimsy plastic body of the MDA Pro to be quite a weak design. I put my first one in my pocket, jumped in the car, drove for an hour, took it out and the phone had been bent in my pocket slightly. No apparent external damage but the screen had a beautiful crack right through the middle.
At one of their shops they accused me of damaging the device myself, but fortunately the insurance paid out, even though I had to pay an excess. I have never had any problems with my XDA2 or my MDA3 and for this to happen within 5 days of actually getting the phone, I am not very confident it will last 18 months.
Furthermore I keep discovering pieces of software are not included - Messenger (which is a shame as always good for long journeys on a train) and most of all - Calculator - I can't believe it, not even the old basic one.
I think you should look once again
There is a calculator in PROGRAMS
and the MSN Messenger is in POCKET MSN, first position from the top

No offense but why would you drive for an hour with an MDA Pro in your pocket. Surely glove box, dashboard, passenger seat or a passenger holding it for you would have been preferable.
To be fair you cant blame the design for that. If youve had it in your pocket and obviously bent it in some way, then the screen being damaged isnt beyond reason.
Its no good buying one of these devices and then expecting it to fit in a shirt pocket like it isnt there. Its a big phone, end of !
As ive said before, the design seems ok to me and its everything I have expected it to be so far. Maybe in months to come I might find one or two shortcomings but not so far.
Maybe my opinion will sound odd to most of you, but I really find Wizard much more "bulky" looking than the Universal. This thing is so thick!!! Even if overall in size the Universal is bigger, it's got excellent proportions and it just "looks the bollocks!!" as my friend said  Of course I'm talking about the XDA Exec which for me looks way better than M5000 or MDA Pro...

Totally agree with that comment! Just swapped from an MDA Pro to an XDA Exec and it actually seems smaller. I guess what they say about black being more slimming is true

Couldn't agree more, I think the Wizard looks FAR bulkier, yet because it's a bit smaller and traditionally-XDA style, people say THAT's the smaller of that and the Exec.
The Wizard is a good phone, admittedly. However, a lot of excess plastic if you ask me.
And black is the ONLY colour for the Universal! hehe
Ant
I have the Universal and the wife has the Wizard, I am costantly amazed at what both devices are capable of. When using my Universal in the car it sits on the dash with the four rubber feet, screen open and on display, works and looks fantastic. I love the larger screen on the Universal and also like the 3g support. As for size I prefer the Wizard, It just feels more comfy to hold and use like a phone, I still feel weird holding the Universal to my ear, I don't use a BT headset yet, keep trying to find a surgery that can give me a bluetooth implant behind my ear  I actually find myself using the keyboard on my Universal less and less now, and opting to leave it screen out and use the onscreen keyboard. The twist is nice but I am sure its is already getting slack. I guess my ideal device would be a hybrid of the two, wishfull thinking and totally over the top but, same size as the wizard, same screen as the universal and with 3g but the screen, imagine opening a wizard with the base being thicker than the screen and as you slide it open the screen tilts up and can rotate so its perpendicular to the keyboard so it looks like the universal, keep going and it ends up facing the keyboard and would close back down screen facing in, no need to twist the screen about a single swivel anymore.
I may even knock up a short avi so you can see it in action.
Regards
I am on the whole , pretty happy with my Exec
The only thing that bothers me is that it seems (only very slightly) slower than my old Magician !
I have had to learn how to answer calls on it (i.e if it rings while it is closed then LEAVE IT CLOSED TO ANSWER IT ! ) Which leads me to my only real gripe - No way of seeing who is calling with the clamshell closed
As for the size thing - anyone who buys one of these knows exactly what they are buying into - I personally have no problem with big phones wouldn't want the Exec any smaller
I've probably said it too many times... I love my phone! in spite and despite of...
When you love something that much, you get to love every bit of it.. bulky size and all. I still look sheepish when answering a call with a brick in my ear but I glow when all my officemates jot their notes on a paper while I just type it on my dopod900.
I still go berserk when the ringtone suddenly changes to another despite my change in the registry but I think I can live with going to settings and all..
So there, Im gonna borrow McDonald's slogan and say "Im Lovin' It!"
I do not see any problem with the size and build of the Uni.
I have the first XDA for 3 years or so, and now I use both the Uni and the XDA. Because I have been using the XDA so long, I do not have any problem with the Uni. They are both relatively about the same size and weight and same usage. Nobody laughes at me when I hold the big phone next to my ear, because I have done that for years with my XDA.
I laugh at myself when I noticed how funny its when having a bug (BT headset) in my ear now.
Overall I really like the Uni though it still cannot replace my XDA fully in certain environment where I do not want to take the risk of having the Uni handles the job. But in office and home, Uni is perfect.
Software wise, when the XDA came out, the software loaded were really buggy, it took years before finally everything became really stable, so with that matter of fact, I could accept Uni at its right now with hope it will be close to 100% perfect in the near future.
jasjar with no build or quality problems, and I love everything except the name. (I'm still planning to get around to using that sugar cube.)
I'm pretty impressed by the overal feel of my Qtek. The plastic feels very strong, it doesn't look or feel like a cheap plactic box. The rotating hinge works flawlessly, but when I put my screen in laptop modus, there is a very minimal play. But I guess this is normal? Can anyone confirm!?

Any design flaws?

Hi,
I'm buying a windows mobile based phone, and so far every one I've looked at has some kind of design flaw.
I've already bought and returned a HTC Touch Diamond, because it had a nasty orange cloudy patch on 1 part of the screen.
What I've found so far is:
Touch Diamond: Orange clouds on screens, and random phones with bad contrast.
Xperia X1: Phone housings just crack of their own accord, not due to abuse.
Touch Diamond 2: Allows dust to get between the screen and the touch panel. (This is especially bad for me as I work in a very dusty environment, so the phone would end up full of dust pretty fast.)
I really like the look of the Touch HD, and after searching so far I haven't found reports of any flaws.
So does the Touch HD have any of the above flaws, or any flaws at all?
Or if anyone can name any WM based phones that have specs similar to the above I'd appreciate it, preferably VGA resolution or above.
Thanks in advance.
Well early on there were a lot of people complaining the paint wore away from the metal casing very quickly, although this never happened to me. I don't think there are too many common problems or at least none that I've had myself.
the paint chipping happened to me also, especially around the mini usb connector and also around the stylus area. The edges of the screen are also starting....
Small detail, not very annoying, but hurts when you paid like 500 euro for the device.
have had it for just over a month, I think the raised metal section on the back cover seems to scratch fairly easily (a bit like the X1's back cover, actually) - I would advise putting InvisibleShield or something similar *specifically* on that section.
back cover is a *whee* bit loose from me pulling it open and closed to hard / soft reset the HD, but otherwise of issues.
Wish it had a lanyard hole, though.
Buttons don't light up... How can you see the buttons in the dark? There are little ways of reflecting the screen light, but you know what I mean, buttons that don't light up?!?!?
Smallest ever notification light is on the power button, how you see this when you just put the phone down next to you I have no idea! Bit pointless if you as me.
Back case is a bit 'loose', but thats after constantly taking it off to flash my phone. You could just pad the back with a sticky pad on the inside of the back cover anyway which would stop it from happening.
Haven't had the issue with scratching the 'bulge' around the camera lens, its brushed metal anyway so can't say you'd notice that much.
Other than that, the phone is mint... Get one...
Well for scratches on the metal casing i don't know cause i always look to put it on something soft when i use on the table or other rough surfaces.I watched a video on youtube which showed how hard is to scratch the screen and the back have a look...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVIPSK0P2EY
But just in case if i were you i would get one of these
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yH-CPWCPCco&NR=1
Well i've had mine 2 months, i keep it in the material sleeve it came with and have the screen protector on and as of yet its been fine.
The screen protector could do with being replaced as there are a few scuffs on it. Very good device though, i've been very pleased with mine. I've used iphones and was never impressed by them. The only flaw i would pick up would be windows mobile itself... I do get occasional error messages as per windows desktop but nothing major.
If you don't mind there being no hard keyboard then i'd say its a fantastic device.
It's really very annoying
buy this never happened to me.
6 months in...
For “new” potential users I’m 6 months into using my Touch HD.
Good points.
Screen – I use Pocket Informant with mini text in the month view and I can actually read enough of each entry for each day of the month to plan at a glance.
Any kind of detail to look at and the screen helps, it is both large enough and has good enough resolution to see detail. The Iphone looks bright and very crisp but doesn’t get down to the text and other detail the HD can.
Size – it’s a good compromise between screen size and pocketability. It’s also quite slim.
Battery life – I’m pleasantly surprised – it lasts a good 2-3 days and using stuff like CoPilot as a SatNav doesn’t pull it down too quickly.
Stability – a few resets but relatively few and usually because I’ve been a dumbo about doing something.
Multi tasking – recently used the phone on a Bluetooth headset, whilst also guiding the caller using the satnav and also looking up the company he wanted on the internet…all at the same time – stunned it all worked, I even managed to navigate between the various active “screens”.
The “What’s that” factor! – most average “joes” have got into Nokia, Motorola, Iphone etc but the Touch HD is a relative rarity – so if you want to be different!
Phone – signal reception and call quality beat my previous Motorola Rizr Z3 hands down. Also my boss has an Iphone and his call quality is awful. My Touch HD is almost like using a landline – certainly better than the last 3 dedicated phones I’ve had.
Pulling out the stylus wakes the device – great and so obvious!
The actual device itself is still as new! I do use a case though.
Loads more…
Bad points.
I don’t use “touch flo” – many of the things I need to do mean using the stylus so for me its either all or nothing – TF doesn’t do for me!
Few hard key options – I used to have a one key push to bring up my diary (HP4700).
Useless LED “alarm” light on top – too small – too dim.
Camera – sunshine and its OK otherwise not great – no flash etc.
Battery life – it’s good but we are all waiting for more! Surely everyone wants at least a week without charging so you don’t lug a charger everywhere you go.
Stupidly small space of a couple of lines to answer text messages – duh! (I know there are fixes but I’m cautious about warranty and unrecoverable ****-ups!)
Installed…
CoPilot live 7. Works well (especially with the recent free screen resolution update to suit the HD)
Pocket Informant – best PIM/Diary/Contacts program I’ve ever used – I have a lot of diary stuff and quick access to good info.
Magic Button – useful although somewhat overtaken by changes in WM6x
Gsen – tweak for the G sensor options.
HD tweak – useful for customising a load of twiddly things.
Memaid – cleans up a bunch of iteme WM6x leaves woolly.
Pocket TV – useful for viewing various “movie” formats.
Resco File manager – MUCH better than the native WM6x file explorer – how can you live without it?
Accessories…Piel frama case – its ok but the leather around the screen blocks left margin stylus actions slightly (I’m left handed). Also it would be better using a magnetic closure instead of a popper, you can flip a mag closure shut with one hand movement but not the popper version. The front cover is a bit too soft so it would still allow something to crack the screen at a push. It also means if you receive a call by the time you’ve hauled the thing out of your pocket you’ve carried out some unknown screen clicks by gripping the case. Having said this I’ve tried two other cases and gone back to this one.
Thanks for all the replies.
If the paint chipping is the only problem I'll buy one, I'll be getting a case for it so hopefully that will protect it.
I'm moving from an iphone which I managed to keep in pristine condition, right up until I lost it
I tend to use the web browser quite a bit during the day, what kind of battery life could I expect out of the HD with say 2-3 hours browsing on 3g?

Usable stylus for Hero

Hi All
My wife's recently got a Hero but she's found a problem with her long nails making typing difficult (capacitive screens don't work with fingernails!)
I've bought a couple of different types of iPhone stylus' but, though they do work, you have to really press quite [scarily] hard to make them register.
Can anyone recommend a stylus that works smoothly and without too much pressure?
Thanks!
The Pogo ones seem to be the most common iPhone ones, have you tried one of them?
Not yet - will seek one out. Thanks!
Did a quick search on Ebay - Item number: 390096569342 free postage too
Anybody have any joy resolving this?
Not yet. I was going to try a Pogo stylus but then found a review that suggests that it may be no different than the other stylus' I've bought. I can actually believe this because I've now managed to test the stylus' I've bought on an actual iPhone and they work far, far better than on the Hero
...not sure where to go from here.
It seems that HTC has lodged a stylus patent specifically for capacitive screens
http://htcpedia.com/news/htc-patents-stylus-for-capacitive-touch-screene.html
Thanks for the update. there has to be a lo-tech fix for this though. I'm going to have a think & a Google search & I'll let you know what I turn up
I found this but I'm not sure I like the idea of metal on glass
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009/06/diy_iphone_stylus.html
Update: Metal actually works on the screen!
Update: got this now http://www.flickr.com/photos/antisynoptique/3225070344/in/photostream/ my mind is thinking hard. JTHM what do the ends of your stylus' look like?
There's no helping some people.
Have you tried this?
+1 lol
topjolly
You'll be sorry when I make my own lo-tech stylus! I'll show you.
I'LL SHOW YOU ALL!
Sorry,
Sometimes I get a bit carried away, I just think that there is a better way & telling my better half to trim her nails (although it is a good idea) wont really fly
I always wait till my Japanese friends did something wrong and then ask them for Yubitsume. Works like a real finger
i was going to post a picture of a chopped off finger to be a smartass so i did a google image search...
now im mentally scarred for life :/
The best stylus I have ever used is the papermate flexgrip elite M. They come in different colors and double as a pen which is what they really are. I recommend highly. I change color with the outfit I'm wearing. I'm in IT Networking so I always keep one in my shirt pocket. My job gives them out. Once you start using them you wont be able to go back to a regular stylus. I can't. You want to see it with the cap on the pen side, not the clip side. I use the small stylus side.

a diy stylus for hero

i accidentaly found a "stylus" for my hero, a hotdog bread worked just great as a finger substitute..
not as precise as a finger (due to its size) but worked just as well.
i have tryed numerous other things as a stylus, but none worked..
have anyone else found a working material for styli?
the screen of the here is a capacitive screen and is different than f.e. the screen from the htc diamond, therefor you should use your fingers for best results and not breaking the screen

HTC do sell a stylus for the hero - but i think it is £16 - which is a fair bit to just not use your fingers! Failing that, have you checked ebay? Probabaly pick up a capacitive stylus for cheap and give it a go (i have not used a stylus on a capacitive screen so can't say how well this would work!)
Hope this help though.
to clarify things a bit; DIY means do it yourself.
i know there are stylii available on the market, but im not going to pay a "fortune" for a small stick with a "high tech" end, hence DIY
there should be materials that work just as well as human fingers, just need to identify them..
My theory was you could likely pick one up on ebay for £1-£2, which would be less for parts of making your own?
that being said, a quick google search did bring up some results. Basically, anything that is sufficiently conductive between you and your phone will work as a capacitive stylus (i think). How About This?
(Sorry I didn't mention this in my first post)

a wet piece of plant will work for a while (a rolled leaf or a stalk)

Pet Peeves

I love the Z1. So much. BUT:
- It's slippery as hell. I live in a humid climate and I nearly dropped it at least 10 times taking it out of my pocket when its a little wet.
- Speaker - Not a big issue as most of us use headphones anyway, but still annoying when showing videos to someone in public and all you hear is this mangled mess of tinny audio.
- Camera presets - Sony, for the love of god, please allow me to jump into my camera SAVE MY SETTINGS in a preset for those point and shoot moments!
Aside from that, this phone kicks a**. And yes, I have no problems with the 'viewing angles' - I am not a crustacean and my eyes are generally level with the screen during use.
What do you guys think? After some time with the device, what kinda tweaks could be made to improve it?
I'd prefer the back to be aluminium since I also think it's too slippery.
I use a lanyard wrist strap from an old sony camera instead of a case and I think it's great, it can't fall and it still looks sexy.
the only problem i have is how fragile it is. i'm on my 3rd one since release. one fell out of my pocket and broke (i was sitting down) and one pressed against my keys in my pocket and the screen shattered.

This would be very useful. 3rd party apps could provide this kind of functionality. But the problem is sony does not permit access to camera functions to these 3rd party apps. LG isn't any better, the nexus 5 & G2 are in the same boat too.
This means we're dependent on the stock app for complete functionality.
When will they allow saving presets in the stock app ? anybody's guess

I'm in the exact opposite situation weather wise, cold and dry. Really ****ing slippery unless you go around with sticky hands which wouldn't be too professional in my line of work.
I'd love to find some kind of grippy rubbery tape I could apply in stripes on the phone, preferably on the sides. Haven't found anything despite extensive searches.
Anyone else have a tip where such a thing could be found?
For me it is the Flashlight which is placed in the worst place. Everytime i do a picture with the flash i see in every shot the light coming from the bottom side and so 1/4 of the picture is "white"....

https://www.west49.com/products/skate/grip-tape.html
Most malls in Canada and the USA have a West-49, a skater type shop.
If all else fails, most Canadian Tire, WalMart and other similar "we have everything you'd ever need" type stores sell tape with sandpaper type texture on one side. Just don't cheap out. Buy the vehicle quality 3M brand, as that's waterproof and moisture proof, and won't peel off from being taken in and out of a pocket frequently.

A gel case isn't bulk, that's the most minimal case you'll ever get for the Z1. Can hardly tell its even there if you colour match.
Grip tape will be a dust& lint magnet. yeah great for grip but how comfortable after a bit.

I have that problem too sometimes but it usually goes away if I wipe down the camera lens glass. Not sure why it fixes it, but it does.
ASF - it just gets in the way cause its scratched so easily
just use glass with oleophobic coating like every other phone manufacturer does - if you want additional protection buy a screen protector (which are much harder to scratch then the ones Sony uses on their phones..)
phone is a massive fingerprint magnet due to bad quality ASF..

factory reset for the wifi. i had to do that to fix some other issues after updating (static during calls, proximity sensor not working)
I always do a factory reset after updates. It ends up saving you time...
Sendt fra XPERIA Z SGP312
Pet peeves..well I'll start off by saying I am in fact very happy with the handset, it's a beautiful device and performs beyond anything I'd ever expected.
But those peeves...
1: Magnetic charging is a novelty and in reality the magnets aren't powerful enough to use in the car as the cable just falls off.
2: A Navbar the size of a small country, Sony created a wonderful screen then filled a good deal of it with Navbar. I shouldn't have to root and use Xposed to reduce it.
3: No white balance settings...I mean come on, the older Z had it!
4: White phone... But black screen bezel totally ruins the looks of it, I picked the black one for that reason.
5: Rooting 4.3 (for now, I know this will change in the future) is a pain.
And finally.
The camera flash has more noise in it than a rock concert, with a case on it just ends up whitewashing the pictures.
But I'd still have an Xperia over ANY other handset.
