Hi All
My wife's recently got a Hero but she's found a problem with her long nails making typing difficult (capacitive screens don't work with fingernails!)
I've bought a couple of different types of iPhone stylus' but, though they do work, you have to really press quite [scarily] hard to make them register.
Can anyone recommend a stylus that works smoothly and without too much pressure?
Thanks!
The Pogo ones seem to be the most common iPhone ones, have you tried one of them?
Not yet - will seek one out. Thanks!
Did a quick search on Ebay - Item number: 390096569342 free postage too
Anybody have any joy resolving this?
Not yet. I was going to try a Pogo stylus but then found a review that suggests that it may be no different than the other stylus' I've bought. I can actually believe this because I've now managed to test the stylus' I've bought on an actual iPhone and they work far, far better than on the Hero
...not sure where to go from here.
It seems that HTC has lodged a stylus patent specifically for capacitive screens
http://htcpedia.com/news/htc-patents-stylus-for-capacitive-touch-screene.html
Thanks for the update. there has to be a lo-tech fix for this though. I'm going to have a think & a Google search & I'll let you know what I turn up
I found this but I'm not sure I like the idea of metal on glass
http://blog.makezine.com/archive/2009/06/diy_iphone_stylus.html
Update: Metal actually works on the screen!
Update: got this now http://www.flickr.com/photos/antisynoptique/3225070344/in/photostream/ my mind is thinking hard. JTHM what do the ends of your stylus' look like?
There's no helping some people.
Have you tried this?
+1 lol

You'll be sorry when I make my own lo-tech stylus! I'll show you.
I'LL SHOW YOU ALL!
Sorry,
Sometimes I get a bit carried away, I just think that there is a better way & telling my better half to trim her nails (although it is a good idea) wont really fly
I always wait till my Japanese friends did something wrong and then ask them for Yubitsume. Works like a real finger
i was going to post a picture of a chopped off finger to be a smartass so i did a google image search...
now im mentally scarred for life :/
The best stylus I have ever used is the papermate flexgrip elite M. They come in different colors and double as a pen which is what they really are. I recommend highly. I change color with the outfit I'm wearing. I'm in IT Networking so I always keep one in my shirt pocket. My job gives them out. Once you start using them you wont be able to go back to a regular stylus. I can't. You want to see it with the cap on the pen side, not the clip side. I use the small stylus side.

Just picked up a Snap. (Euro model)
The top row keys (menu keys, home, back, etc..) make a funny sound when I click them. They feel very "wrong". It sounds like it makes a click before I actually push it all the way in. So there is a sorta plastic-y double-click sound.
I rushed back to the store and the guy opened another box to compare and that was making the same noise too. He suggested it's new and will break in with time. (The display model was good but it has been "broken in" by a lot of customers.)
(QWERTY part of keyboard is fine.)
I'm inclined to think BOTH phones had a problem and it makes me feel uncomfortable.
I had a similar experience with a laptop's touchpad button once and it got worse over time. So this is why I'm pessimistic.
Has anyone else had this problem/issue?
here i'm. same problem on my italian htc snap.
is there something that can we do to fix this problem?
Well it's good to know.... but also sad news because apparently HTC screwed up something.
After using mine for 24 hours the problem was worsening so I just returned it to the store.
I don't know how old is yours (and if it's getting better or worse), maybe you can also return it?
I didn't get another one because frankly I was not awed by the Snap.
Coming from an Excalibur (S620) and based on specs I was expecting to be blown away by the performance of Snap.
But with 3VOLUTION's latest 6.5 ROM on my trusty (and beaten) Excalibur I could not see any improvement. (minus, of course, 3G and GPS)
Maybe I will buy another Snap in the future but going to wait until this hardware issue gets acknowledged/fixed.
PS. It is important to point out, the phone they had on display -abused by a lot of people- was PERFECT. Strange.
@an.ghezzi - please let me know the age of your phone and how this issue develops over time.
i've bought the snap just a week ago and the problem is always here.
not worse, not better. let's wait, maybe someone can tell us what's wrong.
: )
PS. the "funny sound" came only from the "call" and "home" buttons. the others sounds ok...
Just an update.
I picked up a second Snap a couple of weeks ago. Tried the keys in the store and they were not perfect but almost.
Lately I'm getting pissed off with them again. They are just as bad as the first one was. And I know this is a minor problem - probably not even a problem for most people - but I get so frustrated by it. This damn thing feels so cheap. Cheap crap plastic. My Excalibur is 3 years old but still rocking stronger.
I'm not happy.
Same with me. I have a T-Mobile Dash 3G and was wondering why this was happening. It's happening on my left softkey button and home button. I'm gonna take it back to T-Mobile on Tuesday.
Yeah I'm very pissed about this. This new phone (second one, after returning first) is just sitting in my drawer and I'm back on my Excalibur. Squeaky cheap plastic is my pet peeve.
Unfortunately I'm through the 14 days return so I'm stuck with it.
I have one of the first HTC Dash 3G's, got it from Customer service before they were even available for sale online or stores, I have no problems with the buttons what-so-ever, no clicking, just smooth presses. I wonder if there was a shoddy batch that went through to some areas.
Try some rubbing alcohol
On my Ozone, I've noticed a bit of trouble with a few of the keys on the top row feeling spongy. I used a alcohol wipe to kind of loosen up the keys which worked great. I also had noticed the battery cover recently started creaking, so I tore a business card in half and placed it over the battery, which tightened that right up.
same problem here!
Now i know why there are less stocks of snap in asia! i have the same soft key problem, even after one to one exchange! am really disappointed with htc on this, not sure how many others have this problem and if there is anything we can do to fix this? maybe even take it apart??? arghhh...
I ended up selling my second Snap too.
Besides the sticky keys I just did not like it :-/
ookba's custom ROM made it a lot nicer but I just could not get used to the device. Yes the keyboard looks great but the overall design is odd (screen too small compared to the whole unit), it just did not feel balanced.
I have a bad feeling about the fate of the "standard" WinMo (non-touch) edition. The new professional devices are getting nicer. They need to get a new finger friendly OS and a proper capacitive touch screen - once they do that, non-touch will go extinct.
I guess it took me until now to see how Microsoft ignored mobile development for so long. What was killer technology in 2006 is just a mess by now.
I still love my Excalibur, I dare to say it was the best phone I ever had.
Here is how I imagine the perfect phone: Blackberry makes the hardware. Ookba joins Microsoft and they release WinMo 8, or so. XDA community builds GUI.
I really wonder how many people are facing this issue... sigh.
So far, it seems its happening all over the world. I have tested and changed 3units. The current one is a bit better ... at least the call button does not creaks as much. But I miss the e71 in terms of built quality. I was hoping there is some hack we can perform to fix this.
Hi guys
I bought my HTC Snap from Singapore. Experienced the same "weird" feeling, but only on the Call (Green) and End (Red) buttons.
Seems to be getting a tiny bit better after using it for a week (or maybe i've become accustomed haha)
Agree with you on the screen proportion thingy. I still love my old E61. Keyboard + Screen was spacious and lovely. Fast forward a few years and this is the best HTC could come up with?
Still scouring the forum for applications to customize my home screen (panels). WinMo 6.5. Any tips? Thanks in adv!
i accidentaly found a "stylus" for my hero, a hotdog bread worked just great as a finger substitute..
not as precise as a finger (due to its size) but worked just as well.
i have tryed numerous other things as a stylus, but none worked..
have anyone else found a working material for styli?
the screen of the here is a capacitive screen and is different than f.e. the screen from the htc diamond, therefor you should use your fingers for best results and not breaking the screen

HTC do sell a stylus for the hero - but i think it is £16 - which is a fair bit to just not use your fingers! Failing that, have you checked ebay? Probabaly pick up a capacitive stylus for cheap and give it a go (i have not used a stylus on a capacitive screen so can't say how well this would work!)
Hope this help though.
to clarify things a bit; DIY means do it yourself.
i know there are stylii available on the market, but im not going to pay a "fortune" for a small stick with a "high tech" end, hence DIY
there should be materials that work just as well as human fingers, just need to identify them..
My theory was you could likely pick one up on ebay for £1-£2, which would be less for parts of making your own?
that being said, a quick google search did bring up some results. Basically, anything that is sufficiently conductive between you and your phone will work as a capacitive stylus (i think). How About This?
(Sorry I didn't mention this in my first post)
http://lifehacker.com/5550029/diy-touch+screen-stylus-new-and-improved
a wet piece of plant will work for a while (a rolled leaf or a stalk)
Has anyone done testing with a stylus for the A500? If so, what were your thoughts?
I'd like something I can use to either draw quick sketches for photo ideas, or something I can use to jot a quick note here and there (of course, I'd probably need an app that supports handwriting, but those may come in time).
I purchased a Targus stylus today. Having come from the old pre-capacitive days when the stylus is hard, the new stylus' seemed a little odd but I must say the control is very good. Pin point accuracy - excellent for drawing.

I also got the Targus stylus a week or so ago; and it does works well.. I saw another stylus somewhere online that is supposed to give you even finer control and allow you to actually see exactly where the stylus is touching the screen, but now I can't find where I saw it. I'm thinking about giving the new one a shot too, if I can find it again. ;-)

I think you're referring to this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/DAGi-Stylus-P10...?pt=US_Tablet_Accessories&hash=item41582701ff
I have one and it works very well in general. The only issue is getting it at the right angle with the screen - particularly if you have the screen at an angle. But I like it better than the rubber tipped ones.
I bought the Boxwave stylus. I like it a lot. However it doesn't always catch it, sometimes it clicks on a screen I don't want or am scrolling through. But other than that, I am very happy with it for detailed work. My fingers get sweaty on occasion and I have a hard time using the screen when they are like that. So the stylus is a nice addition to have, especially if you don't like fingerprints.
I do wonder if it will somehow mess up the screen though later on.
Just curious, is there any way to get hand writing recognition to work? So for instance, if I bought one of these stylus's, would I be able to use it and forgo the need for an on screen keyboard?

I'm using flexT9 app which has peninput, but its not perfect, the capacitive stylus is more like big stick then a pen
Can anyone recommend a stylus that's got more of a penpoint tip rather than something the size of a finger?
With a capacitive screen I don't think something like this exists. Although I was in a meeting today with somebody taking notes on an I pad, not sure how they were doing that.
I own this stylus and I really like it. This is the only stylus I have used so I cannot compare it to anything.

I got word yesterday that Acer is releasing one specifically for the A500. I will get more information and keep everyone posted.
I'm getting behind on everything as I had to go out of town for a few days on a business trip. Also, prototype custom Iconia case ships to me today for a review and should be available stateside after the 26th. It's similar to the FUSE.
I also use a Targus stylus for iPad as it was called.
Has a soft rubber tip, but works great on my device.
I have a griffin made for the Ipad but works on all my Android touch screens

This looks like a great one. I also found a video on you tube how to make one out of a pin and allum Fool
Going to try the DIY thing as it looks super accurate. If fails I'll be buying this one

Nah - all I've found are really crappy too.
Has anyone found a decent keyboard/case combination within the Uk? I'd like something that has the keyboard built into a leather style flip case. I had one (bluetooth leather flip case) for my iPad which was superb but the Iconia is a little too long for it
There are some on Amazon & Ebay, but people have reported in here that you need a USB hub to get the keyboard to work, which for me makes it useless. I don't want to have to lug around even more stuff!
The case also isn't a perfect fit.
Hi,
No personal experience but you might like the keyboard/case combination on eBay (search for object ID 160610349685 - Sorry I am not allowed to post hyperlinks yet)
The link refers to the Dutch eBay but I'll bet you can find the same device on the UK site of eBay.

re Case/Keyboard
hi - i have ordered one so will let you know my thoughts once it arrives - not expecting to much but again it may okay for light use in the office and i will use my other case for normal wear and tear protection.
I own that case or something amazing close to it. The reports of needing a USB hub to get the keyboard to work are accurate. I ending up buying a L shaped 4 port hub, it sticks out of the case but allows me to have a mouse and a usb stick plugged in at the same time.
My hope is that once 3.1 drops I can loose the hub, but I am not holding out to much hope.

I believe you mean this one - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160612016080
does anyone actually own this one and can they report if it actually works, functionality, etc.
Thank you!
i own one of this, i like the case a lot, it looks stylish and it's very good for note taking, i also use a bluetooth mouse for easy access, the keyboard is made for windows (it has windows key) and havent found a way to bind the back action with any key, most keys works as intended, even the menu key (next to alt gr), but it seems tha honeycomb is not made to be used with just keyboard, you need to use the touch screen or a mouse. the case weigth a little bit less as tablet, has 3 magnets (one for close, one to secure the back support, and other to hold the latch while you use it), overall i think its a great case for the tablet, would like a more "honeycomb" oriented keyboard like the acer official, but for most things this just works.
I use it with dexter's P1 Rom, cause i coudn't make it work with any other rom, no even P2, virtous or stock 3.01.
cheers

Thanks. I might try this one out. For $19 it is an inexpensive risk I think.
this is cheap as I am finding keyboards for $69.00. why so cheap that always makes me flinch like it is not to be believed.
what do you think...
just looks to dog gone cheap!
the only bad thing i see here, is that there is no protection for the screen, when you close the case, the screen is in contact with the keyboard. But the idea is good, transform the tab into something near the transformer from asus for 10 time cheaper ^^
can someone test it please
I have one on order. Should arrive this week sometime hopefully. Will report back on how it works with my Acer tablet
I've ordered one of these as well should do the job short term. Worth the money compared to what some of the other cases are charging. Now that 3.1 has been released hopefully we'll see a lot more bluetooth/keyboard case combinations for this tablet as it seems it 'wasn't completely compatible' with certain hardware prior to this update. Needless to say it worked fine with my wife's ipad 2 bluetooth case just unfortunate that i couldn't jam my iconia into one of them! I think if there's not a bluetooth keyboard/folio case combo available soon I'm going to buy a bunch of the bluetooth keyboards a bunch of the leather folio cases for the iconia and a big tube of superglue and start my own case company!!
well the keyboard case i orderd arrived this morning, so it was a quick flash back out of the Galaxy ROM so i can plug the usb in. Using it to type this up.
sorry no photos but those in the advert are about correct, the only one missing is the kick stand.
The Case Quality is adequate, but considering what it costs then i can not expet too much. Stiching is okay and reasonably tidy, get the feeling it will fray though if rubbed a bit hard. USB cable is more than adequate. There are no cutouts for Camera, speakers etc but then i dont need that when i am using it as an office tool.
Drain on the battery for the USB power is noticeable but then i suspect that is the same for most plugins. Not too much of the plastic smell so that was okay.
The case closure is held in place with a small magnet, just about strong enough for the job. The kick stand is also held flat to the case when not in use by a magnet which is a nice touch. The angle of the screen with the stand is fine for me
The keys themselves give just enough play, Typing is for me okay as i dont have the largest hands in the world but if you are wide fingered then it may a little tight.
the right hand Shift and Enter keys a little to close for me, i keep hitting the Enter key by mistake. Obviously the function keys etc have no purpose.
The real problem lies in the fitting of the Acer into the case - the lugs that are supposed to hold it are about 3-5mm too large so the acer is very loose. it wont fall out forward or to the sides but as there is no lug on the top, turn the case around without the clasp closed and it will definitely be on the floor. i am sure i can find a remedy for this that would allow me use the case with a greater feeling of security.
on the whole a useable case if the security can be sorted for those needing to spend some time at the keyboard, but probably not your long term day in - day out case. Mine will probably end up on my desk and i will slip the acer in when i wnat to use it and back to something else for mormal use.
Hope that helps
ps. typed this in a notes program as i find the browser is very laggy when trying totype directly in to it.

GREAT FEEDBACK - thank you. I have the same one coming - should arrive next week.
For $19 - your review is very encouraging.
To use it for any normal activity you Need to figure out a way of not letting it slip out of the top. Some of the material you use on the dashboard of the car to stop your phone etc slipping might well do the trick . Probably easier and cleaner than some other methods I might try. But if it is a slip in and type , slip it out and walk away use, then it meets that criteria faily well.
Let me know your thoughts when you get it

I think you will be really happy. I have been using mine constantly since it arrived. Makes using the tablet much easier and far quicker when typing. Really adds a lot to the overall unit as a whole.
Just received mine in the post. So far looks very nice but need to wait until I can get home so I can test it with my Iconia! Will post pics and thoughts later and a link to the product.
Anyone else notice this or is it just me? I need to get a cover for it and that will probably help a lot. It's the shape of the edges, its like they are designed to mess up my fingers. The slick back makes it harder to grip and therefore I have to hold it tighter than I would say my old kindle, thus making the ergonomics worse.

Well IMO I like the way they integrated the actual cover into the tablet itself, it makes a good stand for watching videos and stuff or playing games if you have a gamepad. As for benefits...hmm, protecting the screen may be one. I haven't seen a scratch and I've owned it for a month and a half now (my nexus 7 got hairline scratches in the first week -_-). The only problem is ergonomics, if you hold it incorrectly it makes it uncomfortable to hold after long periods of use. Overall I think its worth the buy.

Adding a decal skin to the face and back have helped immensely. Ofc, there's nothing out there that's a custom fit for the Tegra Note, so I just used a the cheapest Nexus 7 skin I could find and it's an incredibly ill fit, but it's an improvement. This tablet is really heavy as ****. I wonder who the genius engineer is that wanted a big magnet on the back cover.

HEy could you potentially post some pics of ur tab now with case/skins etc I would want to see what it looks like .....
.........Also I bought an tegra note case just last week and I have tested it out properly..... I have had no issues except to get used to holding it when playing games.... but then I got around it but standing it and putting two fingers either side inside the triangular flap where it stands and rest the two outside fingers on either hand around the triangular flap.... It made it loads easier and comfrtable to play :victory:

Maybe you won't experience stiffness (tendonitis?) in the fingers. I didn't start to really notice this was going to be a big issue until probably a month into owning it. I'm sure there are other factors involved other than just the tablet, but I can say that I've never experienced tendonitis in my fingers before.
As far as photos, my skin looks like crap. It's all off center. If you're still interested I can post later when I get a new skin and cut it up & apply properly. I think the skin on the glass border shifts around a bit.
