I'm new to this whole WM stuff. I'm getting my first WM phone tomorrow (Verizon XV6800). I've been looking over a lot of posts about themes and ROM and about everything i guess. The question I have is, before installing themes, should I flash the phone? And what does that involve? I see that there are different ROM's out there. Are there any i should stay away from and will one affect certain themes? And I've read something about Radio and Kitchen. Not sure what those are about either.
I guess I need to know what the first thing I need to do to my phone before I start "playing" with it?
Thanks for helping a NOOB!
keep reading and searching keep an eye on dcd's roms they are the best
Scrawnyb has a nice guide for VZW users that walk you through the flash process step by step... recommended - quite painless if followed closely...

If you want to use the GPS for other apps like TomTom, Google Maps, Live Search then flash DCD roms with the 3.42.XX Radio roms. I use .50 as I don't really see a big difference between them. If you don't use the GPS or would be happy with paying Verizon to use VZNavigator then use the MR1 stock rom update. I personally like to customize my ROM with other OEMs so the application is apart of the ROM. I also like to use my GPS for all the apps above and also GeoScout, a geocaching GPS application. I also hear that DCD's ROM are the most stable and clean for maximum memory free and performance. Keep doing your homework on how/what to flash. It is pretty easy but follow the instructions carefully.
Thanks all of you for your advise. I just got my phone and getting ready to play with it. When I flash it, does it get flashed to the phone itself or the memory card?

It will flash to the internal ROM, so once it is flashed it stays static all changes or new software would be in RAM or SD Card.
Thanks all for your help. I got everything up and running. Got some themes on there that i was playing with until i got an HTC Home theme that locked everything up. Ended up havin gto do a hard reset. The way to learn i guess. Looks like for now, i'm sticking with windows. some good things out there, but ALL seem to have bugs.
Hi Guys,
I am a new to HD2. I am reading the forum and getting more confused day by day. I have some basic questions. I would be glad if you answer:
What is radio or installing radio?
What changes when I change the ROM?
Do I lose data when I change the ROM?

Radio controls your GSM and other communication, also battery consumption, Sound, Camera, GPS, Bluetooth, Wifi
|
Everything changes, Windows Mobile Build, version of HTC Sense, applications equipment, speed, maybe battery consumption, sometime graphics of taskbar and softkeybar, IT OFTEN BETTER THAN ROM THAT YOU HAVE FROM SHOP OR PHONE OPERATOR
|
Yes you lose all data on your device like setting, contacts, passwords, etc... but not data on your storage card-----> New rom means installing everything again but it is worth to do it
|
Good ROMs from: Dutty,Miri, Energy Roms, VBN roms ....my experience

good news installing new radio is NOT deleting any data, really fast installing compared to installing roms
2.11.50.26
2.11.50.20
can try 2.12.50.02_2
These radios i tried
RADIOS HERE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611787
i think that ONE usual day of usual using your phone can help you to select the best fitting for you...depends on where you live.I think
for example
2.11.50.26 less good for battery than 2.11.50.20
2.11.50.20 best for battery for me
2.12.50.02_2 really fast battery consumption....but some other users likes this radio...it depends on location or what
Be brave and test
First Thing To DO
But before installing ROMs and RADIOs you must have HSPL installed on your phone ... look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=611433
and then also you can look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=609477 there is newest HSPL3 (For everyone, USA including),and also better described what is ROM,RADIO,HSPL,SPL, etc
Thank you very very much. These helped me a lot.
I will try new ROMs but now I m too lazy to reinstall all apps
But be sure, I will be very brave about trying radios
Again thnx...

Okidoki. thanks
Hi
First off all I want to say: I can probably find everything here in the forum but I'll spend hours and hours reading and most off the time I'll read useless info that I don't need so if you have the knowledge and it just takes 5 minutes to share it please help me out I'll be thankful.
I myself have a HTC legend and have read LOTS off posts before finally rooting and flashing custom roms. Now my dad has asked me if I could help him to get android on his HD2.
He needs to be able to sync his agenda with outlook (for work (Calendar and contacts) I read something about HTC sync should be working on newer kernels is it included in some builds then?), and have a stable build (its not a ROM if I'm correct?) one that he could use for daily use. Don't need anything too special (not even root but its not a problem if it does have root access)
So I've started reading around in the development section and from what I read I don't need to root or flash anything, just extract a zip to the SD and name it Android. Is that correct? (then why do you have special android roms?)
So is there someone who can link me to a good stable (no OC kernels and stuff please) Android Build and tell me if there are known bugs with HD2 builds that don't get mentioned in those threats because they are known as general knowledge.
Thanks in advance
If I could ever help you back with HTC legend problem or something I'll gladly do it for you.
grts
Jonas (sorry for the pour English it's not my main language)
I'm reading topics and If I find answers I'll update this but please if you have the knowledge to help me in a few minutes PLEASE do so.
Never mind found this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782930
and solved most of my questions looks like its not as fully operating as I thought :s.
So It's not just as easy as unzipping and renaming that would have been too easy.
It isn't very complicated to run android on the HD2. I don't know what feature you suspect isn't working that scared you from attempting. Every feature I could want is working. You also don't need to sacrifice windows mobile if you try android. Give it a shot and post again if you have trouble.
Problem is that I need to root and flash other wm Rom if I want everything to work as it should. Or isn't that really necessary? I'll just try a build and see what it does. Thx for th reply

if you have to hspl your hd2 depends on your stock radio rom version. it should be a newer one like 2.10 or 2.12 to avoid most issues with android. flashing another winmo rom is only necessary if you have robot voice and/or faster playback of music (just to mention 2 problems)... you don't have anything to loose if you try android from stock hd2. if it's not working fine, you may think of flashing a new radio and/or rom!
So if I unzip the file I can dowload here put it into android folder in the root of my SD, I'm good to go? What about that kernel do I need to flash it??
if he uses it for work then i'd suggest laying off android for now
he could still use the WM? It's just like a program no? So by just removing the folder it would be back to normal?

You basically reboot the phone and it goes back to wmo. Its almost like running a live linux cd...
When you run HaRet Android takes over the phone. When you reboot it will come back to WinMo. Then you run HaRet again and you back in Android. And so on. WinMo 'lives' on the phone, Android on sd.
So the kernel they are talking about is a fake kernel? (not flashed to the actual ROM)
So if anything goes wrong at first boot with the android I can just pull out the battery without bricking the phone?

Its not a fake kernel...it is real but it resides on the sd card so your original wmo stuff will still be there in case you ever need to use wmo again.

You s should start your own thread. There are many different unlock so specify which one you're after, sim unlock? This section is only for android so if you need help on something else, post it in the hd2 general section, not here. Unless it is android related, you won't find help here.
Ok so if I install this:

I can just remove the file on the SD when it doesn't work like we want it too and everything will be back to normal right?
You are correct.
If it doesnt work for you just erase the android folder. I would recommend flashing hard spl, and changing your radio to 2.12.50.02_2. Then load the hyperdroid 1.6 rom. You will have the best luck with that probably without having to change anything in winmo.

I'd recommend using a spare SD card. When you run Android it creates a ton of folders on it, so it's easier to have a dedicated one than to try and delete everything later (if he decides not to stick with Android).
Also, I read through the thread and couldn't see anywhere... did you tell us what radio is on the HD2? It needs to be (I believe) 2.08 or higher, and it's VERY recommended to have a 2.x.50 and not a 2.x.51 radio.
If you flash a 2.x.51 radio on a t-mobile US HD2 you will brick it. Try flashing radio 2.12.50.02_2

Yeah dno the radio version or the bootloader version.
Do i need root to see that?? Is it just booting while pressing volume down to get the bootloader and the info I need?
Also I read that the HyperDroidV1.6 is overclocked and undervolted and I drather not do that. Just want it as stable as can be. (I know my overclocked legend is stable but if he has a really crappy processor,..)
BTW: I know what overclocking does but what's good about undervolting?? better batterylife?
I think I'll just give this a try this weekend (when my dad (and his phone xD)are home)

I'm assuming undervolting is for better battery life, but have never bothered with it myself. Just have a read of the most popular Android builds to see which you think will work for you. I can recommend FroyoStone Sense v3.1, but I would because that's what I use!
It's so easy to try the different builds that it's no big deal if you play with one and don't like it, so don't be shy - give em all a go if that's what it takes!

UUgghhh..... was this necessary to add a thread like this in the development thread? Builds run different for everyone so you have to try them out yourself. I havent had an SOD in atleast a month so you might be doing something wrong.
My advice is use the search at the top!

Try changing your radio and rom and then use newer android builds...

Well your on T-Mobile to so you can try the setup in my sig. Best setup I've found.
I also get many freezes on TMobile HD2 only if i m using Sandisk 16GB memory card,
Whenever i tried booting android from 2GB Kingston, it boots faster and runs without any SOD
jst it restricts the content capacity :/
I haven't had a SOD in over a month.
Using 2.14 radio and VBN WM rom.
I've used about ten different roms during that time and I've been using various EVO kernels during that time.

YES, I think sigs are important if they want help in the forums. I think sigs should be mandatory... or atleast include the setup with the question.
Signature is not signature anymore, people use it to show off, advertise....
*Update Radio
*Do a Task29
*Read What the Builder say about the build and what Rom he recommends
*while Reading BACKUP your SD Card and Reformat it
*Download the build & Transfer it to your sd card (whatever method you use on how to transfer your file from sd reader or direct connection to phone ALWAYS RESTART YOUR PHONE before running android.
*After first boot Restart your phone again*** (i always do this when i see the lock screen, i dont do the "setup phone" first

Someone know something about that?
How it is possible and HOW AVOID THIS AND INSTALL ANY GAME?

Where is the problem?
You have a tmo, so forget about the a2sd script.
Which bootloader do you have (clk or magldr) ? and what rom are you using ? and what is your recovery partition.
P.S.: Was it you who installed Android on it or you bought it already installed/let someone do it for you?

Ok, I do not have CLK ot MAGLDR, I downloaded Mdeejay eVo Sense v. 2.3Revolution, kernel Hastarin 7.7, Android 2.2 but they call 2.3 for from last update. I do not use recovery partition because there are not partitions, all is on sd fat32 partition, basicly old stuff, but I like the rom. I put all the package folder (Android) into my sd, the type Android is based on rootfs.img, and I run it from Windows Mobile 6.5 with Android Launcher. First time he boot in 10 minuts because he had to made the fresh data.img of 1024MB. After he boot I reboot 3 times and he working very well, the problem comming when I try to install app or games, fully sure.

Hmmm .. to be honest with you, the last time I used an sd-build was about 2 years ago. I do not know what may cause such an issue. It could be the sd-card's partition since you are unable to "write data" to the "data.img" file. Or it could be a problem with that particular build.
Can you try the same build on a different sd card?
I remember having some problems, and a format of my sd-card usually solved them. (due to leftovers from previous roms) << you can try this one as well.
I am sorry, I am not experienced in sd-roms.

I was thinking exactly about do that, I got now the last Sandisk Micro SDHC 32GB Class 10 and I am unhappy because she don't work well from the first time. The first day I put the OS Android into this card he never turned on. I try to think about that and I get confused a little bit, if I am unable to "write data" to the "data.img", in this situation if I install ANY app or Games, which issue I will have? An immediate crash, Right?

I will be glad if someone will have an answare for that.

Since you are running sd builds(you didn't tell me anything about that) it's you card problem. Try deleting everything from .android secure(you're now losing apps from previous rom) because I think that the new rom is trying to overwrite the old one. I was using sd build but this problem is totally unfamiliar with me.
Anyway, install android on your HD2 on NAND, strongly recommended, or native sd since you mentioned that you have class 10 sd card.
I can give you a great tutorial that I've found on youtube if you want, or search the xda, there are a few good ones.

I was using sd build but this problem is totally unfamiliar with me.

Sorry, I don't know how to define all the Android build so I get confused. Now I should know, SD Builds are the OS like mine on sd fat32, Native SD are the OS on partition ext4 and they can be installed with MALGRD, ok, and NAND are flashed on ROM. Too many thing for me to learn and also my english is not so good.

Anyway, install android on your HD2 on NAND, strongly recommended, or native sd since you mentioned that you have class 10 sd card.

I can't on NAND, I have to have Windows Mobile 6.5 because I have full Unlocked TomTom and few app which working fine, Windows Mobile also working well, (just forget bluetooth) and if the SD Build will continue to give me problem with the NEW Samsung microSD class 10 I will probably install Native SD for sure, I hope it will be stable and fast without problems.

Well, I have provided all the information that may be related to fixing your problem.
Now, I think you have to either change your rom, wait for other answers or just live with it.

No way, I hope you understand , I try to make it work but I alrady paid today for another one HTC HD2 , so 1 I use daily with Windows Mobile 6.5 and the "new" one when comes I try to make it work with Android.
AND, when I finally will understud how to have 2 OS on 1 HD2 perhaps I am happy. :fingers-crossed:
Ok, Guys, problem solved, was the microSD!
Yes, the crap Sandisk Class 10 (28mb/s in Read, 15mb/s in Writing) this time let me down, I changed the sd and the Android do not crash anymore and I can install apps and games also.
The battery life,is not so long but this actually can be resolved too, I will try new Androids anyway to find the best set-ups for me.
Thanks for all the support and and tips.
