I recently replaced my MS BT stack with the Widcomm 1.5.0 build 2000.
It worked, i was detecting other devices, sending business cards and doing basic BT stuff...
Then I got me a bluetooth USB adapter for my laptop and and decided to do other cool stuff like activesync over BT and creating a LAN or PAN connection etc.
First of all, with the lameass MS atck on XP that comes free with SP2, there arent any services for a serial port connection over BT (required for activesync) or FTP or LAN etc. So I have to install the software that came with the BT adapter (software called BlueSoleil and pretty good, not that I would know).
So with the new software now i have all theses services running. I have been able to make an ftp connection and transfer files. but I can't get activesync to work.
Sad Has anyone dones this? What am I missing?
Is there a Widcomm stack for the PC somewhere? is that even necessary?

i have my pda's syncing just ok with
one pc with the std ms xp sp2 bluetooth stuff
one pda use the ms bluetooth stack
the other use the vidcomm bluetooth stack
Have you tried using activesync over usb first, once you get a connection, then try the activesync over bluetooth, I have found that activesync will not attempt a connection over bluetooth until you have a working connection over usb.
this has been a constant problem in XP SP2 users who try to activesync via bluetooth.. try checking your COM port availability in your bluetooth stack and activesync connection settings.. they must be the same..
How about Windows 2000 Pro?
Up until now, I can't activesync over bluetooth. My bluetooth dongle is from Billionton, can I use other driver (e.g. WidComm) for my dongle? Can any of u guys guide me how to activesync with bluetooth? Thanks
you're using XP SP2 right? then why use another bluetooth stack when you can activesync via bluetooth through the bluetooth stack that comes with XP-SP2? for more info better search for it in this forum, for there is a full tutorial somewhere here on how to setup XP-SP2 with activesync without changing bluetooth stacks.. i'm sorry but i don't know the exact link..
ei ilmans.. i believe that you can use the Widcomm driver for your dongle.. all you have to do to is to see to it that the COM port your using in activesync is the same as the COM port assigned to the Bluetooth serial port that you can see in the advanced configurations of the Bluetooth stack.. hope this helps

Try this:
1. From the Control Panel, open Bluetooth Devices.
2. From the COM Ports tab, click Add, select Incoming, then click OK (this is kind of confusing, since it doesn't really seem apparent that you are already adding a COM port)
3. Your new port should be listed in the list box (e.g. COM6 Incoming)
From your XDA:
1. Open Bluetooth Settings from the Settings menu
2. Enable the Inbound COM port check box
3. Open ActiveSync, from the Tools menu, Connect via Bluetooth
ActiveSync should be working at this point (you can even browse the Intenet from Pocket IE). Pair your devices first though (via Bluetooth Devices, Devices, Add).

1. On your PC - Check which COM Port has been assigned to your Bluetooth Serial Port
Open the Bluetooth software on your PC (usually called My Bluetooth Places) and choose "View my Bluetooth Services" or similar.
Right click on "Bluetooth Serial Port" and choose "Properties"
Make a note of the COM Port number
2. On your PC - Assign the COM Port in Activesync to the same one as your Bluetooth Serial Port
Open the Activesync program on your PC and choose "File" and "Connection Settings" (or right click on the Activesync icon in the system tray).
Ensure the "Allow Serial cable or Infrared..." option is ticked and then open the drop-down box under this. Now select the Com Port that you checked previously in the Bluetooth software.
3. On the PC - Setup a new Activesync partnership via the cradle
If you already have an Activesync partnership, this should be deleted (File > Delete Partnership).
Put the Xda II in the cradle and setup a standard partnership via Activesync. When this is done take the Xda II out of the cradle and remove the cradle from the PC.
4. On Your Xda II - Activate Activesync via Bluetooth and Bond the Devices
Go to Start > Settings > System > Bluetooth Settings
Under the "Bluetooth Activesync Setup" tap on "Start".
Tap "OK" when asked bond with other device.
You will now be in the Xda II Bluetooth program. Choose the "Discoverable" option and then tap the "Bonded Devices" tab and choose "New"
The Xda II will search for Bluetooth devices. When this has finished tap on the name of the PC and choose "Next"
You will then be asked to enter the Device PIN. Enter any 4 digit number and tap "Next"
On the PC, you will be asked to click on the Bluetooth icon in the PC system tray and enter the same 4 digit number. When you have done this, click OK.
On the Xda II tap "Finish".
Close the Bluetooth program on the Xda II.
5. To Begin synchronising via Bluetooth
On the Xda II go to "Start" and "Activesync".
Choose "Tools" and "Connect via Bluetooth".
Synchronisation via Bluetooth will now begin.

Hi, I just can't make the activesync over bluetooth work with my laptop (widcomm) and my magician (qtek s100).
the devices are paired enough, and I can see the serial port on the phone from the laptop, but when active sync starts to search for the connection, it loses the connection (the serial port is listed as not connected in the "my bt places").
Any tips/hints? Is something wrong on one of the machines? I will try to see if I can test with some other devices...

have an O2 XDA II Mini (Magician) and I am using an XMicro Dongle on my laptop (Win XP with SP2....I am using the in built Microsoft BT stack which comes with SP2) and ActiveSync3.8. Initially syncing with BT was a problem but now its not a problem at all.
First you have to make sure that the COM port nos. selected by ActiveSync are less than 10 bcoz there is some bug due to which ActiveSync will not support COM ports above COM9.
To reduce the COM port nos. on your computer try the following website

Once you can see the hidden devices and ports delete/uninstall all the ports which are not in use.
To ActiveSync.....the following steps might help....
1 To sync with BT first delete all your pairing with your computer and phone on both devices.
2 Go to BT Manager on your phone and click both check boxes for Inbound and Outbound COM ports and pair the devices.
3 Once they are paired go to BT manager (on the phone) again and click on the start button (for BT ActiveSync setup) and pair the devices again if you have to.
4 Once that is done make sure that on the computer in BT Settings the the Serial Port Profile (SPP) "Serial Port COM4" is checked.Click on the phone device>property>services.
5 After that on the computer's BT Manager itself ensure that the COM ports folder shows incoming and outgoing ports with the phone's name in front.
6 Open ActiveSync (on the computer) ensure that the COM port no. is the same as the Incoming COM port no. given in step 5 above and it being shown as available. Sometimes if it is unavailable, the computer needs to be rebooted and then it will be shown as available.
7 Click on ActiveSync thru BT on the phone and it should work.
8 Whenever you wanna disconnect ActiveSync press stop on the compouter to disconnect.
It has been working for me since the past couple of weeks. Initially it took a lot of time to set up but now even if the pairing gets deleted or something messes up its working fine.
One thing to remember is that in case you are using a dongle with a laptop ensure that the dongle is plugged in BEFORE you boot up the laptop. A lot of people plug it in later and then ActiveSync on the computer shows the COM ports as unavailable.

Trying to BT AS from my JasJar to my PC.
PC has activesync service setup on COM6
AS is listening on COM6
JasJar has outgoing COM set to 4
When I start a BT sync reports "Cant find existing Bluetooth Partnership that supports activesync." and asks for a search.
Run through the wizard and select my PC and its serial port. After finishing device will not start a connection.
Go back to activesync and try to connect via bluetooth and gives the "cant find partnership error.
Tried two different adapters on the PC and neither get it to work.
Anyone with any ideas?

Remove all the BT setting you have setup. Just follow the Help file on AS4.1 it works, really!
Tried all that and still not working.
Device just doesnt seem to initiate an outgoing connection.

From the PC AS, select File>Connection Settings and uncheck USB connection and select the BT COM port for Allow Connections. Then select "Connect" and wait till it tries all the connections and fails. Then selec Cancel and then try to connect from your Universal.
PS - I am assuming you have set-up the BT pairing using the Control Panel on the PC and Added the BT COM port from there as well

PC is setup correctly. AS listening on COM6 (BT AS port as shown in my local services)
Jas doesnt seem top even initiate an outgoing connection. Get no blue indication on my desktop icon or on the port status item in the control panel.
Sorry to keep asking questions, but when you set-up the pairing between the PC and JJ did you get a Wizard on the PC that identified the ActiveSync service? Does the pairing info on the JJ say the PC provides a ActiveSync service?
I've had the same problem with my M5000, just solved it.
I removed the Toshiba bluetooth Drivers from the system and rebooted. WinXP SP2 found new hardware and proceeded to install what I assume to be standard MS Bluetooth stack. (DellHardWare.jpg)
Next, I deleted the bluetooth partnership from the M5000. I created a new partnership with my laptop, but initiated from the M5000. At this point, the M5000 didn't offer any services to use with the partnership. So, back to the laptop, creating a new incoming COM port (COM8),(DellCom8.jpg) and then set Activesync on the laptop to use that newly created port. (DellAS_connect.jpg)
Back to the M5000 bluetooth partnership, select the newly created partnership and click refresh (M5000btooth.jpg) This Time it offers me the activesync service. Tick the activesync service and then save.
Finally, on the M5000, from activesync select bluetooth connection...and that was it. Still working. Once I've disconnected and soft reset I'll try to make the connection again and report back. I'll also try to use the M5000 as a wireless modem and post results here.
FrankyG, great news. But I think the procedure you described is not that different from the AS44.1 Help file I suggested earlier.

Delete all your BT COM in control panel/system/device manager (select view and show hidden devices) by going to safe mode. Afterwhich restart your PC and try to pair again....it's always works for me

I have a toshiba portege r200 and I'm simply not able to set up ActiveSync to work through bluetooth. The darn computer only sees my phone as a modem.
I have no clue how to do this.
I really cant' see why this has to be so hard. Both units are running stupid microsoft software. Whey the can't microsoft think that people migh want to connect their ppc's to their laptops via bt and just make it work easily?
Please, someone help.

I agree 100% that this should be easier. But I think ActiveSync is actually a service that the laptop offers, not the phone. So on the phone, go to your BT manager, select your laptop, and then select services. ActiveSync should be one of the choices. After that, you should be able to connect to ActiveSync via BT, but I think you need to initiate the connection from your phone.
Activesync via Bluetooth
1. Install Active sync
2. Connect phone to USB cable and computer and let active Sync run once.
3. Disconnect USB cable.
4. On your Computers Bluetooth software (add a com port) before you detect the phone (very important).
5. On Active Sync on Computer click "connection Settings" and make sure it is using your com port from step 4.
6. Turn on discovery on your computer.
7. On your Phone go to Bluetooth / devices / New and select your computer enter pin on phone and PC.
8. Go to Active Sync on your phone and click "Connect via Bluetooth."

I have Toshiba Bluetooth control software as well. I am certain it's the incorrect or incomplete BT COM port setting on your PC. A few findings (on my notebook) to share, hope this helps.
1. I have a "Bluetooth Local COM" applet on Control Panel
2. By opening "Bluetooth Local COM" applet I have a list of PORTS
3. The CORRECT port I HAVE TO use IS
"COM7 Toshiba BT Port (COM7) LocalCOM-Server[SerialPort(TOSHIBA LOcalCOM)]
NOT
"COM6 Toshiba BT Port (COM6) LocalCOM-Client"
4. If you don't find the Server COM port, do "create a Bluetooth virtual COM port for a Server"
5. Of course enable by checking the "Connection Settings" "allows connections to one of the following COM#" (7 in my case)
After this, try the steps I suggested. Initiate BT Activesyn from your PDA phone.

I just wanted to bump this to say thanks for posting the bit about using the LocalCOM-Server[SerialPort(TOSHIBA LOcalCOM)] port instead of the client port. Trying to get AS working using the Toshiba stack was driving me around the bend!

this worked on my cingular 8125 as well, zsizsi i think you may have to delete all partnerships that were previously created with handheld on your pc and handheld. if that dosent work then in bluetooth settings go to options and under general tab check box "PAN networking service" that is just something i did while creating partnership not sure if it helps
The only thing that worked for me after 4 days of messing with it was to do a cold boot.
The first thing I did after the boot was to follow the instructions. Voila! ActiveSync magically appeared.

I have exactly the same problem with my qtek9100 and my IBM T43 Laptop.
I tried many times but....still not working!
As zsizsi if I try to make a relationship via PDA, it asks me the pairing key, and I'm blocked.
If I go through PC, I can do pairing, in the services I flag activesync, I configure the same com port that I have on AS (com 8) and when I0'm in the bluetooth wizard on the PDA, related to the PC I can only see 3 services:
hands free
remote connection
serial port
no activesync service to flag.
If I try then with the PDA Menu>BT connection it aswer that there is no relationship with PC supporting AS!!!!What the hell!
The only thing I see is that in my BT config in the local server the BT wizard creates a serial port named My activesync......

thank you soo much for that info...enabling the "PAN networking service" finally allowed me to connect with my toshiba qosmio laptop
If the devices are paired... You have to select a service for the pda BT connection
Only when you manage to select the servive Activesync (a comport has to be valid assingd) then a connectin can be astablished.
In active sync you must assign a com port.
See the manual in activesync BT
Yes, I can guess it.
The rpoblem is that the devices are paired, the activesync service is flagged in the PC (while I do the automatic pairing devices withn a wizard).
But I can't still see the service in my PDA.
I can only find:
Hands free
Serial port
remote connection
No activesync service on the PDA relation wizard...
Any other suggestion?
Another issue.
When I look in my BT services, I can't find an activesync service, but only an icon (com plug) called My activesync.
Look at the properties of this icon I can only flag automatic/manual and Secure/unsecure connection, and there is the window manu to select the com port (that is the same selected in Activesync settings).
Is that correct, or I should find a specific activesync icon (like PIM syncronizing ....)

FOLLOW THIS STEP BY STEP.... I HAVE DONE IT 3 TIMES FOR MYSELF AND FRIENDS ON DIFFERENT LAPTOPS AND IT WORKED FIRST TIME - EVERYTIME!!!
PS. Delete all existing pairings, relationships, COM ports etc, START FRESH!

On my computer and Universal, I find it easy to setup BT Active Sync if I activate the setup on the Universal first using active sync app. There is an option within the active sync app to sync via BT. The computer will then recognize the device and will ask you if you want to pair it. On the other hand, if I try to pair them beginning with my computer to search for the Universal, after pairing and ticking all necessary boxes, it still won't sync.
After pairing and ticking all necessary boxes. Make sure you reset BOTH your computer and the Universal.
The problem is that when I pair my Universal to PC, not appear the service "ActiveSync", but "Serial Port".
I've already tried to delete everything and reinstall bluetooth pen, with his drivers and with windows drivers, and ActiveSync too.
I've also deleted all pairs and all port on Universal.
But I've not obtained any result.
I don't know what to make.
Can someone help me?

I had the same problem until I upgraded from Toshiba BT stack to Wildcomm BT Drivers stack (4.0.1.700).
Things I have learned:
- If UNI is connected via USB then AS service will not show in device pairing on PPC.
- You need to create an incoming COM port on PC and set AS to allow connections to this port.

I haven't change the bletooth stack.
Until some week it makes worked regularly, but an evening, I was configuring my Laptop to use the JJ like BT modem, when the AciveSync service has begun not to recognize more like such, but like “Serial Port”.
I've already tried to delete everything and reinstall bluetooth pen, with his drivers and with windows drivers, and ActiveSync too.
I've also deleted all pairs and all port on Universal.
But I've not obtained any result.
Yesterday, I have tried the synchronization with an other PC with a fresh installation of windows, but the result has been the same one.
Therefore the problem is on JJ, even in the registry.
I don't know what to make.

Don't know if this will help and I claim no credit because this solution was written in some other threads. For the universal with a Toshiba bluetooth on your PC:
first, pair your Universal with your PC, you get "serial"
On your PC, create the following "bluetooth local com" (Control panel)
- COM7 Toshiba BT Port (COM7) LocalCOM-Server[SerialPort(TOSHIBA LOcalCOM)]
- COM6 Toshiba BT Port (COM6) LocalCOM-Client
In your activesync, allow connection to COM7
Now comes the fun part. On your universal, go to your bluetooth settings, devices, edit your device and press "Refresh", possibly more than once. Serial Port will change to ActiveSync.
It worked for me.

Also got to the control panel on PC and delete the bluetooth modem that was created. When u add a new incoming port on PC make sure it's not COM8 because that is used by JJ for USB modem connections.

I have the exact same problem on my Palm treo 750v. Searched the whole internet for a solution and found some other people with the same problem but no resolution. The only recommendation that seems to work is to do a hard-reset.
The problem started on my device after I played around with the Soft GPS port. It seems that it screwed up some COM port references for good...
I had the same problem on my notebook with Toshiba's BT drivers. I uninstalled them and connected an external USB BT which fired up the MS default BT stack.
After I completed the pairing using Bluetooth Devices (in control panel) and clicking Add in the devices tab, I used the COM Ports tab and added an incoming port and copied the number of this com port in the AS connection settings.
Now, I initiated the AS over BT from the Jasjar and it said something like "it cannot find the service or whatever and would you like to create one". I clicked yes, when it took me to the list of paired devices. From here I did what leblan has also noted "your device and press "Refresh", possibly more than once. Serial Port will change to ActiveSync." I too found that the serial port changed to ActiveSync. The key, IMHO is to hit that "Refresh" button; i.e. once your device and PC are paired and connected, going to the BT devices and editing (press & hold)the device name (the notebook or PC in this case) you will get the services which will initially say serial port, but when you click refresh, it will change to AS.

delete eventually existing pair between them;
from PC:
if there isn't create a local service COM port. I created COM8 not protected, automatic start;
from PC activesync:
remove flag both for USB and other connections;
from JJ activesync:
try to connect, it ask for pairing, reply yes;
In "mode" flag on turn on bluetooth & make this device visible;
search for new devices, when PC has discovered complete the pairing;
after paired, you can see a serial port and other PC's services;
stay there;
from PC activesync:
now turn flag on other connections setting COM8;
from JJ:
refresh and You can see that serial port begin activesync;
tip OK for close all bluetooth setting windows, You are redirected in activesync.

Delete all paired bluetooth devices from PC and from MOBILE.
CAUTION - USE IT AT YOUR OWN RISK <--- I used a registry editor for the mobile phone (google for regeditSTG2) and opened the Branch "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Bluetooth\ActiveSync" There might be a Key with a hex-String like this "0016cxxxxxx" --> delete it. Change the View to display the values in this Registry Branch, then delete the "LastConnected" Value and set the "Initialized" value to "0"
Turn bluetooth OFF>ON
Pair from PC
Confirm on DEVICE (dont need to select anything just enter code and press OK)
Go START->Active Sync->Connect via Bluetooth
