Guide to make Vista real FAST !!! - Shift General

1. What you need :
- only SDHC at minimum 2GB, format sd in NTFS
- I use Avast Pro 4.8 as antivirus, very quick respond
2. Install Vista Service Pack 1
3. Check for all windows update, and apply all the updates
4. Start - Run - type in start search - services.msc
disable in the 'startup type' - this sevices :
* DFS Replication
* Computer Browser
* Distributed Link Tracking Client
* IKE and AuthIP IPsec Keying Modules
* IP Helper
* IPsec Policy Agent
* KtmRm for Distributed Transaction Coordinator
* Offline Files
* Remote Registry
* Secondary Logon
* Security Center (Use caution if you disable security services!)
* SSDP Discovery
* Terminal Services
* Windows Defender (Ditto the above warning!)
* Windows Error Reporting Service
* Desktop Windows Manager
Disable Aero
Start - Control Panel - System - Advance System Settings
tab 'Advance' - in group 'Performance' choose setting - in tab 'visual effects
choose 'Custom'
- disable everything, except :
+ show windows while content dragging
+ smooth edges of screen fonts
+ use visual styles on windows and buttons
more info bout this @ http://katz.cd/download/1980259/Other/Ultimate-Vista-Tweak-Guide/
5. Use Tune Up Utilities 2008, and just follow 1-click maintenance
this is the software of tune up http://rapidshare.com/files/145411607/Tune_Up_Utilities_2008.rar.html
Tune up will also clean up after sp1 installation trash, save up to 1,7GB in my result
6. Block your virtual memory on C drive at max : 1530mb, and min : 1530mb
Start - Control Panel - System - Advance System Settings
tab 'Advance' - group 'Performance' choose setting - in tab 'advance' -
group 'virtual memory' choose change
disable 'Automatically manage paging ...'
on drive - choose C
click radio button 'Custom Size'
initial size = 1530
maximum size = 1530
click 'Set' - OK - close all windows open and restart
====================== you can skip this part if you dont feel like it =========================
---------------------------- or you can try it, and undo it if you still dont feel like it ---------------------
7. Enable readyboost
Start - Run - type in strart search - services.msc
Enable in 'startup type' = Automatic = Readyboost
and activate your SDHC at 1840mb for readyboost
Please be patient, after you enable readyboost, vista will try to copy some files to
your SD, this could take a lot of time,
Note :
- If you want to use SD to save files (perhaps you have more than 2 GB)
make sure that your SD is CLEAR first and enable readyboost,
and then you can use the rest of the remaining capacity of your SD to save your files
8. If you enable readyboost
Because the result is very quick respond, I dont use Hibernate,
Although hibernate is not very good in Shift at this moment, sometimes i get SD vanished
=======================================================================
Result with readyboost
- Boot time : until login 29 second, total after login with fingerprint, 75 second, harddisk real resting at 110 second
- RAM : after 120 second, down to only 530mb
Respond
- All Microsoft Office 2007 : only first time is 5 second, and if you close it, and reopen it
only take less than 2 second, that include Visio 2007 and Project 2007
---------------------------------------------
With ready boost If you still want to use sleep, most of the time you will get your SD vanished,
some forum say that the problem is on SD driver that will get fixed by Microsoft
later in Vista SP2
------my point is---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
compare back to windows xp, with this unbloated vista we can work like a charm and feels like in xp
With readyboost :
- faster boot up time
- and more RAM to work
Without readyboost :
- normal boot up time
- still you can have more RAM to work
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thank you.
Just one question: is it possible to use Readyboost AND data on the same SD? I mean: should I create two partitions (one for ReadyBoost and the other for data) or not?
Sorry for my dumb question

I do use SD for data and Readyboost

in my situation, i use sdhc 16GB and i'm only using 1 partition, but be sure that u activate readyboost first, then u can use the rest for file
although, if u interesting using partition, i think that would be no problem, even better i suppose

WATCH OUT. I downloaded the file and received a warning from my anti virus saying it is a trojan with the name "TR/PSW.LdPinch.uij". Guys be careful.

Is it really necessary to format the SD card as NTFS? I mean FAT32 should be a bit faster.

Be carefull in desactivating services. You might experience somme ill effect, specially when puting your device in sleep mode or hibernating.

Can u tell me more specific

The free version available directly on the website. It is very effective and discovered many viruses that other anti-virus programs failed to find and cure. I highly recommend the free version, which you don't have to crack, since I believe it uses the same data files as of the pro and premium versions. It is limited for personal use though. I personally don't agree on or approve of cracking software for any reason since it is illegal.
I have been using it for many years now and it proved to be very good. I got to know about it from the server version which I used under Linux. This is a great product and definitely is worth to try.

Ok, downloading and installing now

I still do not understand the point... Let me try and explain.
I bought a SD Extreme III Ducati card (20 Mb/sec of read/write declared speed), I plugged it into the Shift, clicked the "Use this card to improve performance" (sorry, I'm using an italian Shift, so the message could be mistranslated). Waited for some seconds and then checked the propriety tab of SD card: the message souded like "You can't use this device for ReadyBoost, the hardware is not enough". I thought that formatting it in NTFS could have done the work, but... I preferred to give that card back to the vendor and use that money (52 Euros...) to buy other things.
Any suggestion?

Maximum SD Card size for MDA PRO

I've had a reply on wwwPocketinfo.nl :
http://www.europe.htc.com/support/faq.html?id=29
For info on maximum card sizes for HTC brands.
Also on another site I found the following:
Source: (http://www.pocketpc-live.com/partition-sd-cards.html)
Partition SD cards PDF Print E-mail
A Pocket pc live supporter has submitted an another intresting tutorial.
Introduction
Transcend and several other manufacturers make 4GB SD cards these days. They're great if you use your HTC device as MP3 player or Camera, as they offer enough space for thousands of songs and pictures.
My device, the HTC Universal, handles them just fine. However some applications, most notably the Camera application, don't like it.
Why some apps don't like it
The main problem here is the way in which they calculate the free space.
the processor is 32-bit, which means it can handle numbers ranging from 0 to 2^32. 4GB is exactly 2^32 bytes, so that shouldn't be the problem.
The problem is that applications sometimes handle the number as signed, which means that it differentiates between negative and positive numbers.
With signed numbers, the last bit is actually used as the sign (positive or negative), and the new range stretches from -2^31 (-2GB) to 2^31 (2GB).
Up to 2^31, the unsigned numbers and signed numbers are the same, but after that the last bit is set in unsigned numbers, which means that if treated as signed it will be seen as a negative number.
So if you have more than 2GB free, and the application mistreats the number of bytes free as being signed, the application actually thinks you have less than 0 bytes free
How to fix this?
There are several ways to fix this. The most simple one would be to have a simple dummy file so you always have less than 2GB free. This works for the camera application, but any miscoded application taking a look at the actual size of the disk will still screw up
The other solution is partitioning your SD-card. This means that you actually split the SD-card up into several virtual SD-cards of smaller sizes. So one SD-card of 4GB could be seen as four of 1GB (my set up).
This way you still have 4GB of storage, but applications will not get confused as it's split up into several chunks.
WARNING
Before you start remember to back up the current data on your SD-Card. the procedure will completely erase your SD-card. You might be able to retain the data by using partitionmagic's resize partition features, but you'd have to test yourself.
Also I'd like to mention that although I tested this procedure myself, I can't garantuee it will work for you. If it renders your SD-card useless, I can not be held responsible.
My set-up
This tutorial was written using:
- T-Mobile MDA Pro (HTC Universal)
- Windows XP SP2 MCE (equivilant to Pro)
- Transcend 150x 4GB SD-Card
It might work with a different set-up, but I can't garantuee anything
Requirements
- Windows Mobile 5
- WM5Storage (do not use CardExport2, you need the ability to turn off "Removable Class"!)
- Big SD-Card
Let's get started
Just follow the following steps
* First, make a backup of your SD-card! the following procedure will erase it!
* Next, install WM5Storage. The latest version can be found here.
Just copy the .cab file to your device, and execute it from the file explorer. Just make sure you install on the main memory, as the SD-card becomes inaccessible during the procedure
* Start WM5Storage. On my device, WM5Storage did not put anything in the start menu or the today screen, so I had to launch it through the file-explorer. You can find it at My Device\Program Files\WM5Storage\.
* Be sure to untick both "Read-Only" and "Removable Class". Optionally you can set it to light a LED on read/write, but that's not neccesarry for this procedure.
* Disconnect your device from your computer.
* Insert the SD-Card if you haven't done so already
* Hit "Activate" (bottom, right)
* Re-connect your device to your computer.
* From now on all steps are done from the PC
* Wait until windows has recognized all "new hardware", and you have new a new hard-drive listed in "My Computer".
* Open the control panel (Start -> Control Panel)
* Go to either Performance and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools (category view) or directly to Administrative Tools (Classic View)
* Double-Click Computer Management
* Go to Computer Management (Local) -> Storage -> Disk Management (might take a little while to find all drives)
* In the bottom view, find the disk that has your SD-card in it (You can find out by looking at the contents through "My Computer", or by seeing which disk is added once you plug in your WM device)
* Right click the partition (white block ), and choose for Delete Partition
* In the just created "Unallocated" space, right click, and choose for New Partition
* In the wizard:
* choose for a Primary Partition
* For size, enter 1024MB (or if there is no more remaining, just the remainder). Ofcourse you can also choose your own size
* Assign any drive-letter you want (or none if you only want it to be accessible on the WM Device).
* Format the partition as Filesystem FAT32, Allocation unit size Default, and pick any volume label you want (You will only see the volume label on the PC, on the WM Device it will just be "Storage Card X". Also tick "Perform a quick format"
* Wait until the bottom line in the new partition reads "Healthy" (wait for it to format basically )
* Create as much partitions as you'd like (just resume from right-clicking and picking New partition)
* You're done partitioning! If you want, you can fill the contents of the SD-Card now before you deactivate WM5Storage
* Disconnect the device from the computer
* Next few steps on the Device
* Click "Deactivate" (same place as "Activate" was before )
* Close WM5Storage
* You're all done! have fun with the multiple storage cards you have now

P4350 small issues

Hi
(1)
I dont like annoying sound of opening/closing Start menu or choosing a menui item. To avoid it, I have to uncheck "Events (warning, system events)" item in Sounds&Notifications screen. However then I miss sound of warnings and system events I guess. How to disable sound for Start menu only?
(2)
When I ActiveSync with Exchange, ActiveSync keeps synchronizing endlessly. Its status is "Looking for changes", then "Synchronizing" and the same again and again without any limit. I just synchronize emails from Outlook folders. No matter if "DirectPush" or "Synchronize during"="When new items arrive" is turned on/off.
(3)
On the forums, BatteryStatusExt1.04.cab is being distributed. It doesn't work. I wonder what the file actually is. Original BatteryStatus tool has another filename and version as well.
(4)
smsOrganizer needs to activate using code from authors web. If you make a mistake (thats what I PROBABLY did), it will never run, even after reinstalling. Not nice. I can just wonder in what file or regkey the author stores the key:/
(5)
htCustom tool (tested version 1.4 and 1.5) completely not functional, throwing exceptions everywhere.
(6)
Any plugins to see Herald files in FAR manager (preferable) or Total Commander?
(7)
Any idea how to import VCF containing more items (not just one)? Seems Windows and Nokias have this problem. I already splitted one big VCF to 300 small VCFs and wonder how I'm going to import them. Clicking on them will take years..
(8)
My VCFs which Im going to import contain more mobile phones. Windows generally doesnt support it. In the address book, there is no option to add new field like on Symbians. How do you solve this situation? What do you do if you want to store more mobile phones? Of course lot of people have more mobile phones!
(x)
Why you use Rapidshare to store files? Please don't support those ****!
Great phone anyways. I dont care about money and this is the best phone I could find. Nasty size, high stability (wow, no single crash), fast synchronization, freaky keyboard (with sym.txt to be easily altered). Very happy with it
any hints??
Well i got you a hint for the last point (rapidshare):

- true, very bad speaker and microphone. loudspeaker is screaming and you actually dont hear voice. also people hear twice. also people dont hear you well generally. also, even with quietspeaker, people can hear you properly.
To your first problem I think all you have to do is uncheck screen taps. I had the same problem with activesync also. The problem turned out to be my firewall. Had to turn it off in order for the device to sync even if i set a permission first.
And if your still using WM5 I found this in the wiki:
Improve Sound Quality of Speaker Phone
You might have observed that when you turn on speaker while during a call, the other person has complained of too much disturbance on the line and can hear more of static then your voice. Here's a fix to improve mic sensitivity:
HKLM\Software\HTC\AUDIOGAIN(x)\RECEIVE_UPLINK_VOLUME = CC (DWORD hexadecimal)
HKLM\Software\HTC\AUDIOGAIN(x)\EARPHONE_UPLINK_VOLUME = CC (DWORD hexadecimal)
where (x) = none, 0, 1, 2
You can find most of the reg edits from HTCustom and just do em yourself.

Heres the actual e-mail pertaining to the activesync problem. This can also be found on the Microsoft Website.
Good afternoon
We are aware of the HTC P4350 memory card corruption problem Farooq. We believe that Windows Mobile 6 will fix this issue that you are experiencing. We are expecting this update to be available for download through the HTC eClub on our website at the end of July.
With regards to your ActiveSync problem, there are many things which could be causing active sync to not synchronise
with your computer. One possible cause could be your anti-virus software and
your firewall.
To solve firewall issues, please open up your firewall program and navigate to
the exceptions section. Here you can set the firewall to allow certain programs
and ports. You will need to make sure your firewall is set to "allow
exceptions", then in the allowed programs list you will need to have four
programs related to active sync allowed. the filenames are as follows, however
they may be called different names in this list.
wcesmgr.exe
wcescomm.exe
rapimgr.exe
astu.exe
Also you will need to allow the following ports:
Inbound TCP
990
999
5678
5721
26675
Outbound UDP
5679
Once these ports and programs have been added to the exception list, you should
find that Active Sync will now work with your computer. If you are still
experiencing problems, then try disabling your anti-virus software as this can
sometimes conflict with Active Sync. If you still cannot synchronise then
please phone our call centre and one of our agents can troubleshoot your setup
with you in order to solve this issue.
Thank you for your enquiry, Should you have any other problem, please do not hesitate to call us. Your Local number can be found at http://www.europe.htc.com/support/csbyphone.html
Best regards,
Matthew

neptune, thank you very much for your reply. i have fixed most of my issues (they start with √).
(1) of course i have "screen tap" off, but Start menu still beeps loudly!
(2) √ FIXED somehow the problem disappeared - maybe by altering AllowLSP reg value, which was required to route internet from home PC to PPC.
(3) √ FIXED
(4) √ OBSOLETE - i dont care, will not search for some registry key to use the tool
(5) √ OBSOLETE still crashing - will not use the tool. I use ASergOptimize pack instead.
(6) would like to know. I heard TC plugin exists.
(7) √ OBSOLETE: i did it manually. it was really complicated job with lot of hacks, using regexp search/replace and manual import of all contacts one by one. I wish I never change platform again...
(8) √ OBSOLETE: again lot of hacking, I mapped Symbian fields to funny Outlook fields (e.g. "Mobile 2" -> "Car", "Mobile 3" -> "Radio")
(a) √ OBSOLETE I will use some tool. (I hate using separate tool for alarm. Why Windows doesnt have normal one.. I tried Gentimer tool, very slow one, crashing my phone on each event!)
(b) √ OBSOLETE - will use some tool
(c) BIG PROBLEM 1 arrows!!!
(d) BIG PROBLEM 2 morning schedules!!!
(e) wow thanks for this, will try it
overall, transfer from Symbian to Windows is not easy... a lot of work I had to do... however I feel much happier with it.
one note: interestingly, i find WM programs to be very small and take very small memory!
I sometimes had the same problem with the arrow keys on the keyboard.
Maybe you can fix the problem temporary if you switch to the Todayscreen and back again to your application where you type. For me this fixed it most of the time.
Dont know if i only was lucky because i did not got the problem often.

Maybe you can fix the problem temporary if you switch to the Todayscreen and back again to your application where you type. For me this fixed it most of the time.
Dont know if i only was lucky because i did not got the problem often.

I get this problem very often, basically when I type any SMS and that's not acceptable.. It can happen several times when writing one SMS. That's toooo much. I want it to be fixed somehow..
never encountered a keyboard problem such as this in the past. If you havent tried changing the keyboard then i'm not sure what it is.
never had any of the issues written about here with my p4350
either with wm5 or wm6
maybe I have missed something, but have you guys tried the wm5 ruu update for p4350? (http://www.brightpoint.com/Brightpo...HTC_NOR_5.4.409.2_4.1.13.34_02.79.90_Ship.exe)
thats a norwegian ruu, but im sure you can get it from your provider..or wait for the wm6
sorry if im stating the obious here

Network attached storage drives......

Hello all. I did ask this question in the Hermes section but no answers slo I thought I would as in here as it is a networking type problem.....
I have a Maxtor Shared Storage II drive on the wireless network. All the XP PCs can see and access the device no problems.
The Hermes is running official WM6. When I use Resco Explorer to try to map a network drive, it isn't there, but any XP computer that is switched on at the time, is in the list in Resco.
If the I check the properties on the NAS's folders on a XP machine then its reported as a NT server 4.9 drive??
The drive has the feature of a media server on the menu system which as yet I havnt had time to play with so far.
Any help greatfuly appreciated
Cheers
Chris.
not sure about yours but the tests i read about those maxtor nas mybooks require some special software on the pc to access them
if that is the case with yours and they dont have an ppc version
you are out of luck
Yes I do agree there is maxtors software on the PC to access various functions, but before I installed the software I could see the public folders that were already installed on the NAS...!
Chris
It's nothing to do with them being NAS Storage. As far as the network is concerned they are just windows network shares. I'm having the same problem - I can't access shares over my wifi network on my Hermes.
I have a file/web/ssh server and I can easily access it using a browser or with PocketPuTTY and I can ping it with vxutil but I can't connect to the shares even though I can ping the hosts and see the networked devices in Resco and PocketLAN. Total Commander doesn't work either!
I'm sure it's something to do with routes/subnets and have tried setting the proxy options in "settings">"connections">"connections">"advanced">"select networks" and also changing the options for "My network card connects to" in Network Adaptors.
I want to use a "cooked" rom but this seems to be the source of the problem - I've flashed another rom on my Hermes and it connected fine. I'm having the same problem with my HTC Universal and I also had a problem with my Wizard but I managed to fix it by modifying the "connections" (see above!).
I've got the same problem with my NAS (Maxtor Shared Storage II).
BTW, I don't think the Maxtor Connect Manager utility is required , I've connected to the NAS from XP and OS X without the utility running.
My 8525 (WM 6) cannot see the NAS in network neighborhood , even though the IPs are pingable.
The 8525 cannot see the share on my MacBook Pro either.
I have no problem with a share on my Win XP SP2 computer ... it even streams media (divx, MP3 , windows media) to my 8525. Mapped with Resco Pocket Explorer with no problem.
I think the MAC and the MSS II (www.openmss.org) are linux/Samba network based and WM cannot connect. If any linux guru can verify and provide assistance, it would greatly be appreciated.
Wow ! Streaming media from a NAS on the 8525 ... a dream so far ......
I don't think this is a linux problem - the shares I am accessing are on a linux samba server. I can access the shares using different rom versions on my hermes and my universal (just not using the rom I really want to use!). My wizard (WM6) connects to the shares fine!

Thanks h0me5k1n !
Can you share the method or application and version your using to make the share with Samba ?
Is the NAS/Share visible in network neighborhood or is the connect string manually entered ?

When I have used resco to attempt the connection I can see the host PCs in the network neighborhood but cannot see the shares on each host PC (neither windows or linux).
I have always connected using the netbios name - using the ip address has never worked as far as I can remember. I have always used Total Commmander (I only tried other apps because Total Commander wasn't working) and I've always used the latest version.
I've just switched my Hermes to another rom.... K's rom V1.21... and I can browse my network shares again (windows and linux) and the rom is the only difference. It's a nice rom too so I'm gonna leave it for now.
An example of my working setup: I have a computer called "mediacentre" with the IP of 192.168.0.234. I can connect over wifi using Total Commander with the addresses of "\\mediacentre" and "mediacentre" but neither "\\192.168.0.234" nor "192.168.0.234" work!! Exactly the same thing with another rom did not work!!
Maybe this is something to do with the network configuration of the base rom from which the cooked rom is built?
It's definitely not a linux/windows/maxtor problem!

I've just installed Total Commander 2.0 (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm ) a few days ago and haven't gotten around to using it . It's not a very intuitive app when it comes to making network connections. I also noticed that TC has plugins for other files systems (http://www.ghisler.com/plugins.htm#filesys).
Did you have to use one of the other plugins or any special protocols on the NAS (i.e. VPN , FTP, etc.) ? - Sorry for the multiple questions in detail , but I'm a linux newbie \ : ) .
If I get the figured out, I'll try to publish a detailed "how-to" since I seen the same question w/o solution on other forums.
Thanks-In-Advance
I find TC very easy to use - especially the virtual 2 window mode!!
To connect I just open the \\Plugins folder, choose LAN and can connect with "_Quick open" or by setting up a "<new server>" with the addresses of "\\mediacentre" or "mediacentre" (as per my example below).
I have not had to use any other plugins from the TC site and my NAS is basically a ubuntu (debian) system with a number of samba shares (which are basically the same as shared folders on windows). The shares on my server are viewable by all on my local network so no password is needed to access them although they are "read only". I have a WinXP desktop too with shared folders and I connect to this in exactly the same way.
No joy ......
Just went thru several attempts using Total Commander to connect to the MSS II and still no connection. Just did a search on the forum for "SAMBA" and it seems there are other folks out there in the same boat.
Some possible factors I can this of are :
- security on the NAS Share
- different flavors on linux used on the shares
- the application on WM used to connect (resco, File Explorer, TC, etc)
- some obscure setting on the Router/Hub /Switch
- version of WM (2003, 5, 6 , )
BTW - after installing TC I lost the connection to my Win XP share which used to work via Resco. (arghhhh!) .
Why is this such black magic that only functions under a full moon?
My head is spinning now !
This link looks hopeful :
http://cri.ch/linux/docs/sk0014.html
More trial and error for now ....
Anybody else care to weigh-in with some advice ?
Kaiser + NAS (Linux + Samba) + L26 Diamond V4 = works!
Solution for those using Kaiser (TyTN II):
I just flashed http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=395555 (Kaiser Diamond V4), and my Synology DS-207+ (Linux + samba shares) is visible and accessible from every software (Total Commander, Resco, File Explorer).
Previously I used to flash Dutty's ROMs and original ones - they do not work with samba. I wrote to Dutty - hope he'll find how to fix (I love his ROMs).
Good luck! Now I'm able to watch videos on Kaiser from my NAS via WLAN, I'm happy ;-)

Interesting... As far as I can tell, Total Commander, Resco Explorer, File Explor, and the Network Plugin all call the same password manger in WM6 and that manager does not send the passwords in a form that SAMBA understands.
In theory changing the key at HKLM\Comm\SecurityProviders\NTLM\LmCompatibilityLevel to 2 from 3 should do what I need, and enable the Universal to communicate with my SAMBA server. That it doesn't suggest to me that there is a problem with the LM security provider.

OK. The correct answer is here:
Change HKLM\Comm\SecurityProviders\NTLM\LmCompatibilityLevel to 1 from 3, not to 2 (ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa922895.aspx and http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa925018.aspx) as "You can also set the LmCompatibilityLevelServer value to 2 or to 3. Both of these specify that the server will only use NTLM v2. Authentication will fail if the client is not capable of NTLM v2 protocol. For more information, see Authentication Services Registry Settings".
And check to make sure HKLM\Comm\Redir\SmbSignatureMode is set to 0 (not recommended 'cos it may cause problems with windows servers), 1 or 2, but not 3 (ref: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa921092.aspx).
And you can try to set HKLM\Comm\Redir\AllowedAuthMethods to 3 to see if it makes any difference. To me, 2 works fine.
No need to modify samba configurations if you are running a recent version of samba (3.0.28 right now). Anyway, you can always try to add "use spnego = no" (maybe "client use spnego = no" or "spnego = no" as stated and/or quoted in other posts/web pages, I'm not sure of it.) to see if it makes any difference in your situation/samba version.
If you have admin privledges on the windows/linux machine, you can install orb on it. I've done that to my xp machine at home and now from anywhere on my ppc I can access anything I want from my home machine... it also checks to see what the files are at home and can sort them into categories like music, documents, videos, etc.
I'm not sure if it will work with orb installed on a pc to look over the network to a NAS, but mine looks through usb to an attached drive.
Worth a shot and a very simple solution to the problem.

Speed your Shift for a couple of $$

This is not an advert, this is just to tell people who accidentally missed
the
READYBOOST - PREFETCH - SUPERFETCH feature in Vista/W7
I've been working with this feature since the release of Vista, it really helps, and it certainly does on the Shift.
Basicly, you reserve a part of your SD card (4GB) as an extra
"cachefile" (It's all done by the OS) and for all small random I/O
your Shift will now read from that part.
It get's faster over time.
Check out this blog :

So get your FAST SD card, right click on it, use it "to speed up your system" and improve your speed.
From hibernation to fully working in 18 seconds !

go to virtual memory settings in xp....
on virtal memory / page file remove all hdd etc and set them to zero page file.
now select your sd card and select it as virtual memory or page file and nowxselect let windows manage page file/virtual memory on sd card.
apply and ok .
the key idea is to hvae all virtual memory on sd card and none on hdd...i have been doing this for many years.
more instruction on browsing to virtual memory settings/ page file on xp below
To manually change the size of virtual memory, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl in the Open box, and then press ENTER.
2. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Performance click Settings.
3. Click the Advanced tab, and then under Virtual memory click Change.
4. Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file that you want to change.
5. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size, type a new paging file size in megabytes (MB) in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, and then click Set.
6. Click OK to close the dialog box and apply changes.
Note After you change the size of the paging file, you may be prompted to restart Windows. If you are prompted to restart, the changes will not take effect until Windows is restarted.

yes it will work on any windows pc or laptop, just follow the instructions for vista or xp as appropriate
I tried ReadyBoost and Superfetch on my Shift and monitored the memory usage with the Process Explorer:
These two services need additional 100MiB of physical memory. So to have a SD cache with a speed of ~5-10 mb/s you give up 10% of you RAM. Bad exchange!
As long as the Shift's 1GiB memory is not fully used the device feels a bit smoother. But as soon as you reach the limits and it starts to swap your performance will drop even more than without these both services.
ReadyBoost and Superfetch are making the Shift faster - and also slower when you really need the performance.
dont use ready boost or super fetch services of vista, use the xp trick for virtual m

dont use ready boost or super fetch services of vista, use the xp trick for virtual memory as outlined on my earlier post for vista as well.
remember the key forspeedup is to decrease the read/write from hdd during mem paging process, hence if all paging memory is allocated to sd (which is faster to hdd) and noe allocated to hdd, the os will work faster...this goes for all os xp,vista,w2k,wserver2005...and same for linux or osxor unix..

Trying to hide por....I mean Important Documents? I found a good way is to Hide them on your PC. When you are ready to access them on your phone browse to the folder the hidden files are located and by default you should not see them. To see them click "Menu" in the bottom right of your screen. Then select "Show All Files". You should now be able to see the hidden files.
How about encrypting a folder? Try this, http://thewingster.com/filebarricader.aspx.

thanks for recommendation, but i dont think it's for wm 6.5....looks like a software many years ago.....
Just tried it out on my ATT TP2 with EnergyRom 6.5, works fine.
Hate to break it to you but 6.5 IS software from years ago, slightly touched up
i use FreeOTFE4pda its similar to truecrypt on your computer. The best part about this app is the encrypted volume you create can be mounted as a second sd card on your pda or if you copy the encrypted volume to your pc you can use the pc version to mount it as well. It's open source and supports all the common encryption algorithms.
descryption from their site.
FreeOTFE is a free, open source, "on-the-fly" transparent disk encryption program for PCs and PDAs
Using this software, you can create one or more "virtual disks" on your PC/PDA. These disks operate exactly like a normal disk, with the exception that anything written to one of them is transparently, and securely, encrypted before being stored on your computer's hard drive.
Features include:
* Highly portable - Not only does FreeOTFE offer "portable mode", eliminating the need for it to be installed before use, it also offers FreeOTFE Explorer - a system which allows FreeOTFE volumes to be accessed not only without installing any software, but also on PCs where no administrator rights are available. This makes it ideal for use (for example) with USB flash drives, and when visiting Internet Cafés (AKA Cybercafés), where PCs are available for use, but only as a "standard" user.
* Source code freely available
* Easy to use; full wizard included for creating new volumes
* Both PC and PDA versions are available; data encrypted on your PC can be read/written on your PDA, and vice versa. Supports all versions of MS Windows from Windows 2000 onwards (including Windows 7), and Windows Mobile 2003 and later (including Windows Mobile v6.5)
* No need to install it; making it ideal for use on USB memory drives, etc
* Support for encrypted Linux volumes (Cryptoloop "losetup", dm-crypt and LUKS)
* Available in English, Spanish, German, Italian, French, Czech, Japanese, Croatian and Greek - with support for other language translations
* Optional support for smartcards and security tokens
* It's powerful: Supporting numerous hash (including SHA-512, RIPEMD-320, Tiger) and encryption algorithms (including AES, Twofish and Serpent) in several modes (CBC, LRW and XTS) - providing a much greater level of flexibility than a number of other (including commercial!) OTFE systems
* Encrypted volumes may either be file, partition, or even disk based
thanks for the help to all of you guys thanks ....
