Has anyone figured out how to record phone calls on the XDA2??
I have tried just about every recording app out there and the only way I have been able to do this is using the phone on speaker and recording in notes or sound recorder.

From my experience no need to use the speakerphone.
Just using the phone on your ear will record both yourself as the other side (maybe my volume is higher than yours :? )
Pity though one cant use this when using a headset or carkit . . .

Don't know what is wrong with mine, but when I press the record button during a normal conversation, my voice is recorded and the voice of the other person is very soft very soft... Hard to hear.
What could I do about that?

Good enough in a quiet environment.
My in-call volume is set half-way.
Same for me and very annoying. I think this dumb device only records what you say to the microphone. If you can [barely] hear the other person, it's only because your volume is so high that the microphone picks it up..
why in the world would you need to record only what YOU say?? I think it must have took at least 3 engineers to build it this way.

Ever heard of memo-recorders??
Recording a phone call is a nice extra (its posibility is nowhere stated/promised). Pity it doesnt work with all devices.
Hmm it seems to work well with mine in all places except very loud environments. In some instances it would not have been possible for it to have picked up the other end through the speaker (too much noise) but it still records them... not sure how it works!

I am under the impression the i-Mate JAM/XDA Mini etc have speakerphone ability (to listen to a call on loudspeaker). However I cant find how to do this.
It certainly should be possible, as when I play music its very loud. Ok, the quality may not be great on loudspeaker, but good enough for a phone call.

I can hardly hear the other party in speaker phone mode. Moreover, I think that it is a design flaw to put the speaker on the back of the device.
I am looking for a application that can activate speakerphone. without using the green-button.
Is there any such?

on a I-mate jam it's possible to turn on speaker while calling so you can speak "handsfree".
This can be done by holding down the green call button.
When I do this the sounds of the speaker is de same as normal only the sounds comes from the back of the phone instead of the front.
Does anybody know how to fix this? A friend of mine has the same phone without a problem.

Have you tried while you are on the speakerphone mode to make the volume slider higher?
That ain't gonna help you. This is a known - and unsolved problem with the Jam. If you really need a speakerphone, you should return the phone. No amount of firmware/ROM update will help you.
I use the speakerphone option without any problems. The sound is loud and clear. What is this unresolved JAM problem that you're talking about?

My XDA1 had the best speakerphone I've ever used, including corded phones. I could be in a conferance room with 10 people around the table and everyone could hear, speak and the participate on the phone never had problems with background noise. I have a hard time accepting that next generation technology from the same manufacturer should be woefully inadequate. The unit is advertised as a speakerphone, the solution is to return my phone and purchase another? No thanks friend, anyone reading this with solutions please respond.

I think most of us don't know how to hold the mini in the right way, while the phone is in speaker mode...
if u want to hear a load voice.. make sure that back of the phone faces ur ear..
that' because the mini has 2 speakers... and the one in the back( near the mirror) is loader.. so you will hear the conversation very well...
and BTY.. I suggest u upgrade to the latest ROM available for ur device..
it helped me a lot....

Wrong - its patently obvious that the sound is coming from from the back speaker. Why on earth it comes frm the back is another question entirely, given that the speaker phone is supposed to free up your hands so you do other things, including multi-task on the device i.e looking at the screen! Every other phone I've had has a decent speakerphone - and they face the front too.
But the main problem is that the volume from the supposed "speakerphone" is too damn low, irregardless of location.
Considering all the huge volumes of prior experience that HTC has (making practically every Microsoft PPC device, smartphones, plus the Palm Treo phone), things like this awful speakerphone on the magician are really not excusable at all.
I went through 3 TREO 600s due to speaker problems. You could barely hear the speaker phone on the 600 either. ANd to top that off, no one could hear you! The JAM is nice, but the more that I use it, the more I wish that either I bought something else or that the the JAM could just work the way it was designed!!!!!!
1.3 Mega pixel camera... my ass! It's the same quality as my first Casio digital camera from '96. Not mention the fact that Imate can't even put a decent ROM update together.
Perhaps we should build our own PPC's!

One time, I turned on this speakermode operation on my MDA-Compact, I could hear my phonecall loud and clear from the built-in speaker.... This happenend accidently, probably by pressing just the right button, but I wasn't aware....
I cannot find how to do this again? How can I get the MDA-Compact to operate in speakermode using the built-in speaker?

To turn on the speakerphone part press the Green call button whilst in the call for 5 secs or so.....

I have no idea if this is possible, but I'd love to be able to use my athena as a handset, not just a speakerphone. I know it's huge, but I've had my device for three months and am still not happy with the headset solution. I've tried the popular jabra, jawbone, and lg style-I options, but don't like having to carry and charge another device, or wearing a headset (even just for calls), and although it's not awful, the sound quality (especially outgoing) often just isn't good enough for business calls.
What I'd like to do, if it could be done, is come up with a makeshift handset mode where the left speaker is turned off and the lowest setting for the phone volume could be much softer (so that the whole room doesn't have to hear the incoming sound). I don't know if it would be necessary to adjust the mic gain down any, but I don't think so.
The ideal solution would have something akin to a phone profile setting that would allow me to toggle between the default speakerphone setting and the new handset settings. But, it would be acceptable even if I had to just stay in handset mode (maybe with the ability to just turn up the call volume to have a mono speakerphone).
I am a total novice here, but is there a way to hack the registry (or better yet, some audio manager app) to change the balance settings on the speakers and to decrease the lowest possible volume settings for the phone?
Of course, I'd probably carry the device without the keyboard so that I didn't have to take it off and put it somehwere every time a call came in.
Is anyone else wanting something like this? Can anyone help? If I'm just nuts, please be kind in saying so

It sounds like for what you desire, someone would have to write a program to do that. If there was a program that did that, I would be interested in trying it out.
basically you have to accept the fact that its JUST TOO BIG
to ever be used as a conventional phone.
After I took ONE call on mine , i went straight out and bought a headset and its much better than using any phone which i loathe to do anyway.
I dont think of my athena as a phone , its a mini laptop that can make phone calls, you have to accept that or get another phone

However: the speaker(s) on it are clearly not usable as the kind that would permit you to humiliate yourself by having it to your ear; they're too loud for that and in the wrong place.
However, it should be possible to make some sort of speakerphone mode (like with video calling) that you can just talk into the mic with.
the question is, do you *really* want to make yourself look like that big a bellend in public?
i understand your dilemma but the only other real solution i can think of is to use a wired headset, it has better outgoing sound quality and you don't need to charge it.

If you are so desprate to use the athena this way, I think the safest and easiest way is to put adhesive tape over the speaker holes to muffle the sound, and then punch a few holes in one to your liking
You could Just superglue it to the side of your face
you really will have to face the fact that you may have to develop this programme yourself if you wish to use the ameo as a normal handset - i use the term loosely - the problem with it is that whilst the ameo is the coolest gadget going as a mini pc, it is the most embarrassing thing in the world to press against your face, and also leaves you open to a VERY easy snatch if you get it out in public. And yes people who look like bellends are more susceptible to street crime. That's a fact, i'm sure of it. I chose my ameo knowing of its failings and devised my own solution of using it for data purposes only with wifi or a bluetooth dialup connection to my phone, which in turn i use for making calls and texting. Other people use bluetooth headsets and seem to get along with them fine. Until a kaiser quality device with a vga screen comes out i am happy to accept the ameos inconveniences and love it for what it is.

You might want to try PocketZenPhone, a software that does profiles for the phone. It is an on-going project and the developper handles requests which he incorporates into the soft. It might just be a case of developing another profile for you called "semi-mute" or something .
Or just stick with a BT headset, like the rest of us.

I have been using Athena as a normal phone.Reduce the in call volume to zero and yes u can talk like a normal phone.If u are in very quiet environment, then fellows might listen what u r talking,but in any normal circumstances no one can hear what u are talking and eventhough the incall volume is zero, orther person can hear.Looks like HTC made an alternative arrangement, but any way it works fabulously

what do you mean when you say "reduce the in call volume to zero"? Do you just mean moving the slider all the way to the bottom? For me, that's still pretty loud. I can hear it easily well away from my ear. Or, do you mean something else? Thanks.

well I think evermore had a very good and valid question to ask,I too have just bought the same phone and I too am faced with exactly the same problem. I don't mind walking around with this phone in my hands holding it to my ear,if anyone wants to try and grab it,good luck to them,I would trash it first and them second. But what really P****D me off with the replies to this posting was the number of muppets who couldn't come up with a constructive and helpful answer to this problem. OBVIOUSLY they are used to little girlie phones and don't remember the old days of BIG phones or their limited intelligence doesn't allow them to post a constructive reply, and as for the comment of "bellend" well I am surprised the originator managed to find the internet,let alone use a mobile phone!!

The originator of the 'bellend' jibe just happens to be the man who devised a working CID and SIM unlock solution for this device: he would have been somewhat ancapacitated if his laptop had been glued shut.
I think that the use of such informal and slightly crude words as "bellend" is acceptable given the incorrigable nature of the problem: the idea of pressing a mini pc up against your face is crude in itself.
Given that I used to believe I could make a flying machine out of a monopoly board, a leather jacket and a tricycle, perhaps the same naive 4 year old might have thought it possible to turn a handset large enough to eat a ploughman's lunch off into a pocketable handset. I've grown up a little since then, and I use the Ameo for what it does best, rather than trying to make it into something it isn't.
YES I remember BIG phones. I also remember BBC Microcomputers, Shellsuits and televisions with teak surrounds but fortunately I've seen fit to move on since then, and find them a little embarrassing now.
If members wish to inform other members of the fruitlessness of their ideas then I don't think this is a problem (particularly if these members [Olipro] have a track record and know EXACTLY what they are talking about): the solutions of course are obvious and oft-discussed: bluetooth headset; turn volume down and press against ear; or don't use it as a phone at all.
Maybe you can't have your cake AND eat it.

Yes, I would like to request a hack for the phone so I can make myself look foolish and like a big bellend (whatever that means) in public.

Quite frankly, this works with me, if I feel like holding the x7500 to my head. Of course, the call volume you hear depends on how good your hearing is, so YMMV. I find myself using a BT when I'm around others, either the LG Style-I or the Jawbone. (I'm eyeing the Jabra BT 8010 also). But the bottom line is you can use the x7500 as a handset this way if that's your preference.

I found a perfect solution for everyone wanting to use the Athena like a regular phone. It'll take a little bit of work but it seems to be worth it. Check out the project site I found. It enables you to make the Athena or ANY other cell phone work like a regular phone. Just need to adjust the instructions for the Athena and it looks like we have ourselves a real solution.

Ok, ok...all kidding aside, one of the coders may want to write something to make this possible. I would use it. I've been caught without my headset before and didn't want to answer the phone because there were people around me. This is a good backup solution and I would use it as that...a backup i ncase my headset battery went out (even though I have a spare headset) and in case I forgot my headset at home....GOD forbid!

I love it! My only suggstion is the guy in the picture needs to ditch his hat in favor of the tin foil model with the built-in antenna.
I know that this topic comes up again and again but wht has nothign been done about it? When I call SE they don't acknowledge that there is a problem - has nobody else contacted them about this?
My phone is not rooted - has anyone who has rooted their phone increased the volume? Is there a solution anywhere out there?!

I was going just say WHAT???? I can't hear you! but that would just be mean
I'm up to 026 rooted and the volume seems the same to me. Only good news is that using a Bluetooth earpiece solves the problem ... now if only I could use the BT to voice dial.
the actual volume of the speaker is pretty decent, like when your in test mode you can hear a significant difference. I guess some idiot at SE decided to keep it low.

I bought a BT earpiece so I can use while driving and it does make the volume much better....I cant get the BT to "activate" voice dialling on the phone - should it be able to? Have you manage that? The voice dialer standard app on phone is a joke I still therefore have to dial the person I want to call and once that is started then the BT takes over....have you managed anything better than that?

Yes I know I have seen this....so why oh why oh why when SE must/should be aware of low volume havent they increased it instead of messing around with non-essential things like Creatouch/Timescape?
I just wish they would acknowledge the problem and let people know either they were going to fix it and if they cant fix it then i can get rid of the phone! Sp far they just seem to pretend it doesnt have a problem eg when calling customer services they say that nobody has reported any problems....
I have contacted se about this too. It is mt biggest stumbling block with this otherwise sound phone. Come on se FIX IT!
ear piece volume is for sure lot less than many phones I used. Much less than SE's own phones. I almost can't talk on it in noisy streets or I take out my bluetooth head set.
Unfortunately, I love the phone so much that I decided to adjust to several issues X10 has. When I first got the phone I had so many little issues with the phone that bothered be but over time I adapted myself to it

Android 1.6 doesn't do BT voice dial.
It might sound kinda stupid but make sure that the ear speaker is direct to your ear, which means that your ear will be covered by half the phone and not all of it ( unlike my previous nokia phones) pretty stupid I know but I hope it helps.

Sort of depends on the conditions you use it under. If you're in a conference room it would work better than if you're in a shopping mall.
I've had mobile phones since 1988 (22 years of wireless) and I can tell you that the X10 has the worst in call volume I've ever experienced.
I imagine that somebody at SE must be aware of this.

Count me in. But like I mentioned earlier I love the phone so much for it's style and so many other things that I decided to adapt to it. I use bluetooth in noisy places. I normally hate having bluetooth hang on my ear in public. So, I put it in my pocket and take it out when I get a call. Fortunately, there are not many calls I need to answer right away.
I too have this problem so I bought SE's MW600, well worth it but I hope they sort this problem soon.
My K800i had a fantasic earpiece sound quality and volume but my previous SE C905 was terrible and the X10i is worse still!

+1...It's a bit quieter than most other phones I've had, but conversations are still fine.
The way everyone's talking about it, it seems like a huge deal. I've heard that (it was about the Evo 4G because many people complain about call quality on it too) when custom ROMs can be booted, the devs can increase in-call volume.

I just wish they would acknowledge the problem and let people know either they were going to fix it and if they cant fix it then i can get rid of the phone! Sp far they just seem to pretend it doesnt have a problem eg when calling customer services they say that nobody has reported any problems....

maybe they said nobody has reported the problem because they couldn't hear the callers either. sorry, just couldn't resist that!
anyway, i do agree that this is the worst phone i've ever had in terms of caller volume. unless i'm in a quiet room, it's utterly useless. the only remedy i've found so far is to use the speaker phone, which is not a good solution at all!
while i do love the X10, if the issue still isn't resolved with the 2.1 upgrade, i may just go back to my old phone, because while the X10 is indeed quite smart, it sure as hell isn't much of a phone!
How can people honestly say this is not a problem?
We all have the in-call volume set to max and it's barely acceptable, set to half-way/normal which on many other devices would be sufficient and it's hardly audible unless you're in a library. Setting my Blackberry's in-call volume to max actually hurts my ears it's so loud! But ideally that's the kind of dynamic range in volume I'd like to see, no...hear SE implement.
If I had to guess, I would say that SE was having trouble finding a balance between finding an acceptable in call volume level and having a problem with echoing in calls. The louder the speaker is, the more susceptible it is to echo. There is no other reasonable explanation as to why its so low. Especially in a flagship phone. As a device, this phone is stellar, but as a phone, its pretty bad.
The last post basically echos my latest communique with SE. Their reply is below:
Dear Sir/Madam,
Thank you for contacting the Sony Ericsson support centre regarding your X10
Andriod 2.1 is due for release within Q3 of 2010, this may be subject to change however.
This should resolve the audio issues you have explained.
