Hi everyone,
The increase in speed and overall performance of the HD2 is truly impressive, even when upgrading from a capable device like the Raphael.
Still, when sifting through the various threads, I see more and more users either complaining about the speed of stock ROMs and/or praising custom ROMs for their performance.
I got my device with a stock ROM dated from Dec-09 (don't know the exact build cause I flashed it immediately ), and performance was a dream. I've tried a couple of cooked ROMs on top of it, and each one performed similarly: very responsive and incredibly fast.
That's when I started thinking: just how fast is really fast then? In other words: what makes a ROM appear fast? Is it how smooth you flip through the Manila tabs, load and scroll through web pages, install an application, copy files, play a video etc.? For me, it's all of it (well, kind of). And my Leo responds almost instantly whatever I want it to do which makes it a dream device to use.
Just curious to hear your opinion/experience on that.
Cheers.
In my opinion the Manila Part is really making the thing. Fast Manila means Fast Rom for me. And I like good results on my CorePlayer Benchmarks
Thats about what makes it feel "fast" for me.
whatever we get we always want more, human natures greed streak!
so yeah it is fast but until it moves faster than our brains react then people will not be happy!
me included.....
Fast manila
But according to me the problem with leo is not the speed or performance
in which there is no comparision at all
the basic prob. Lies is battery
so we want a rom with radio included best for least amount of battery consumption which i hav noticed lasts for less thn a day when ever htc sense is activated and of normal routine use
For me increases in speed are less noticeable than decreases. So when something does improve speed I don't notice it all that much and if I do, my mind quickly gets used to it. But if I do something that decreases speed it's immediately and forever noticeable.
I believe it depends on your aspect. I mean, can you catch the difference between the two sport cars when they are at the limit of their velocity like 300km/h and 310km/h with your senses. I can't
But could you measure it? of course yes.
So i think, it depends on which side are you stay.
For me it feels fast when i can scroll through the manila tabs really smoothly and fast

Recently I was upgrading my good old Kaiser, I totally know what you mean
With the HD2, it's pretty difficult to make it slow, so I don't really think there is that speed aspect left now.
With ROMs, there's much less performance, much more about the features you want.
There are a few roms I have tried and noticed sense occasionally lag, and it instantly makes me change to a different rom. I know the phone is capable of being smooth so I wont put up with it not being.
For me, Sense must be fast, but opening the usual things like emails must be near instant too.
Fast = instant, no waiting, < 2 seconds to launch *any* app. Or in other words, iPhone 3GS-like performance (at least).
Of course, features and stability are also very important must-haves in custom roms.

The iPhone does something that WM doesn't do, and that is animate to a blank screen/splash screen before actually loading anything. Lots of games have splash screens that take an age to load, whereas WM just loads the program and when it's loaded it displays full screen.
I think there are two roms that set some good stds.
Xanny's Evolution rom is one of the fastest Manila Roms. Very quick and snappy in Manilla. Outside it is also good.
Kholk Eugneia Rom with the 1GHZ rom is average in some areas but some apps it is seriously fast. TomTom loads in a flat 2 secs with Aussie maps. Compared to 3.5 secs for most other roms.
If Xanny tries the 1Ghz hack then my phone might just melt.

That speed you are seeing is not from the 1ghz hack it is from Extendir which increases the speed of File systen read time. So opening some programs will be faster. The down side if it is not properly configured the Notes will not sync and cause other problems accessing the storage card like music etc.
fast is when, you listin to music+go to the setup installation+ browse websites
"fast" is very subjective judgement. i like to see my HD2 make smooth transitions from screen to screen and "clouds to moove smooth".
talking about fast in program loading only points out your unknowing of how stuff works expecialy when you compare things to iPhone.
fast with other name might be Android, which really works on phone raw power and not some cheap tricks to make it look smooth.
WWWROEOEOEOEMMMM that's fast!
Strange.
The 1ghz rom had quite slow disk access (SPB Bench) compared to Xanny's
However the 1Ghz Rom's CPU marks were faster than Xanny's
On average Xanny's rom is the least laggy of any rom. Very nice and snappy.

OK, from what I've seen so far, I conclude that it's mainly Manila that needs to be smooth and snappy to make the ROM appear fast. Makes sense, cause everything else is already super fast on this wonderful device.
Hey all, is there any way to decrease the scalar lag on my HD2? I don't care about battery life, so if it consumes more, that's fine. By scalar I mean lag such as...when you flip the clock up on the home tab, it's slow. Switching to the Album tab and back dramatically speeds up the flip clock speed. I already have LeoCpuSpeed enabled so it helps but doesn't get rid of this lag. Any help appreciated.
Ps. The lag disappears for a while when I switch to album tab or Internet tab and scroll up or down a little. Thx
Flashing a custom rom.
If you are into flashing cooked roms, ive found that roms that use EXTENDIR have drastically better sweep/scroll than ones without.
Of course the roms are tweaked for performance too, but it is still noticeably smoother.
i rarely recommend roms, but THIS one, v1.37 is by far my favourite rom,. i go back to it again and again.

The latest there is 1.36 :s Should I download that one?
Dammit, the rom's not available for download
ahh right, the chef is off doing exams, i think, check your pm's
which one do u prefer and why?
My favorite is sense, it has everything I need and it just looks the best, whether it's mysense(stock) of normal sense. I like all the widgets it has compared to vanilla android, but the speed impact is defiantly worth the UI. To me appearance is slightly more important to me than other features on android, but honeycomb looks sweet though. 3D sense is extra cool too-it as some minor changes that make it worth it. CM is nice too dont get me wrong, it has high level customization compared to other types of roms, you can change so many features.
P.S. When you say stock do you mean stock MT4g rom or vanilla android?
If it's looks then CM7. I can make it look exactly like Sense in every regard if I want to or customize anything(dialer, notification bar, boot screen, dock icons, etc). The extra is that the speed of CM7 blows away the speed of Sense. I've had many friends at work that have now rooted their phone after comparing the speed of my phone when compared to their stock Sense Mytouch 4G....it's not even close.
Negatives are: Sense camera/video app are much better, data speeds drop some, Dialer/contacts is better on Sense, and I miss the calendar widget.
mysense 3.0 because of the dock bar, too bad no one makes a properly working one.

Just out of interest as there seems to be a difference of opinion on this.
I find CM7 faster, even when not overclocked.
90% of the vote for CM7 is about what I was expecting.
Can't understand why some people seem to prefer the stock rom.
Because stuff like this is subjective. That apart, few cant live without HTC Sense.
Not when it comes to performance/speed (which is the point of this poll) .
A benchmarking app would show a performance increase after flashing CM7.
Definitely CM7........ my keyboard finally works the way it should
I already had this argument with someone else, so not going to go over it again. But, I'll just state the main point I want to make: Synthetic benchmarks are NOT an indicator of real world performance.
And what will happen if it is proved that cm7 has more performance benchmark than stock. Nothing..... And it is not just the performance but also about features.
Just be happier that wildfire got rooted after ages. The waiting is good bcoz it even got s-off. Thanks to alpharevX again.
And thanks for comparing it with stock rom alone.
<sarcasm>
Before root = root root root
After root. = stock stock stock
</sarcasm>
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App

Er, wasn't looking for an argument, just trying to gauge the general opinion on whether people find their wildfire faster after flashing cm7.
And yes, I'm aware benchmarking isn't 100% accurate, that's why I started the poll.
Not to prove anything, just to get a consensus.
Guys, please, when you say CM7 is better at performance, can anyone with CM7 confirm to run google maps properly ? They run like sh*t on my device. On froyo they were 100% responsive and fast, now they are unusable.
Btw my observations so far, the rom is far from faster, it is just overhyped rom and people vote its faster, because they read everywhere its faster. My opinion. Maybe on more hw capable devices it is indeed faster.
Don't get me wrong, it's very good looking and seems optimized with tons of tweaks and settings, but i prefer rather 100% performance over tweaks...
In fact, the stock rom is much faster in certain situations. (ie google maps, homescreen scrolling)
But the google maps may be some other problem than the rom.
The homescreen scrolling isn't dependant as much on the ROM as it is on the launcher...

Just go to settings>ADWlauncher>screen preferences>desktop scrolling speed
I did that.... I've went through all setings. I didin't mean faster as "faster" lol.
Maybe its the launcher (probably), anyway my point was it's not "way faster" than Froyo. At least on Wildfire.
as for me, CM is much more responsible and customisable, so you can configure it, to be much faster. I remember my first opinion after installing it "omg, stock rom sucks..." and I still think like that. I haven't tried gmaps though
I've been working with the phone a lot and I must admit my initial judgement was seriously flawed. The first thing I tried was google maps and together with not so well tweaked system / gui resulted in my downed mood. Now I'm starting to share your opinion.
I use 'Angry Birds' as a benchmarking app ...... before CM7 I could barely play the thing on Froyo (HTC stock ROM).... the birds were 'thrown' way too slowly (I don't really know if you guys get the picture)..... and don't even get me started on the keyboard..... it's sublime!!!!!!!! I can finally text at a normal human being's pace instead of waiting half a lifetime for a character to appear on my screen!!!!! (Ok maybe I am being a bit overdramatic.... still it's true)!!

I get your drift mate.
My benchmarking app is copilot.
With the stock rom it was so slow it was barely usable.
With CM7, it flys along and works as well as any Tomtom device I've used.
I've always wondered if custom launcher speed up the phone or just a placebo.
Example Nova , somehow feels faster but other than that it sucks CPU and RAM and battery juice little by little and none complaint.
I'm currently with lawnchair v2 which is god dam amazing and I'm having this feel that battery and speed wise phone is one idea now better or just placebo that's haunting me.
Would love if anyone could share some light upon that since couldn't find any info .
