Software Idea - Touch Diamond, MDA Compact IV Themes and Apps

Can someone make an app like the parking app on the iphone, would this be straight forward to do, basically when you park your car you load the app and press a button and this adds a pushpin to google maps, then when you want to find your car you can reload that push pin.
Is this something that would be hard to do?

Park the car, and wait for a fix ...

but surely if you were already using something like tomtom you'd already have a fix.

WEll, I mostly drive in places I already know
* well * there I would remember where I have parked the car though
You got a point
But it won't work in parking garages.
But you could take a GPS foto ?

obviously it would be pointless for places you know but if you drove somewhere you didnt know you'd probably use the sat nav and have a gps fix, how do u take a gps photo?
The app on the iphone lets you press on button and that saves the location, then when you want to return to the car you can either see the location on google maps or get directions to the location, I thought that was quiet a good idea and was surprised there was nothing like that for windows mobile.

I did this at the weekend, not because I wouldn't be able to find my car, just because I thought of the idea and tried it out.
I used garmin to navigate to my destination and then once I parked simply added current location to my saved locations as "car" then later plan a route back to it, works a treat.
For GPS photos you need to activate the GPS photo mode in the camera which is mysteriously disabled by default along with sport mode and burst! The easiest way to do this is to install Advanced Config Tool and activate the setting in there

if you use gps photo to take a photo how do u get the coordinates off and into a gps program automatically.

Much easier to just park the car, save the location as a favourite in your sat nav app like TomTom, when you need to find the car, just navigate to a favourite called car , been doing that for a long time and it works just fine, last time I did it was when I parked my car in London when I went there for a day trip, first time I have driven to London, TomTom showed me the way back to the car, would never have found it otherwise

LMFAO best read off the day.!

Anybody remember the Seinfeld episode, in which they forgot where they parked the car?
It was in a parking garage, so no gps, but hilarious anyway.

how to turn off bt GPS navigation

if i have htc universal w/ tomtom 6.0.10 on it & it works great....but I dont want to always connect to the BT GPS receiver....I just want to use it kinda like a typical here to there map but w/out the instant GPS updates & locations & stuff....how can I turn it off?
if i just leave the BT gps out of range, TT6 won't work...it continually trys to searc for my device....
any advice would be great.
thanks,
GMP
I guess you are out of luck. The program simply wasn't designed to be used in that way.
thats ok....i just thought in the website info it was saying u could use it in a non-gps way......& i just couldn't figure out how.
so thanks for the reply,
gmp
I'm not sure about TT6, I'm still using TT5.
I use TT5 that way sometimes by going into the menu (just tap the screen)
then select the next arrow to browse the page.(i'm using a Dutch version, so I have to translate the best I can).
Then I select view map, top right option. I'm then presented with a map view on which I can zoom in/out and scroll. Als you can set waypoint or search streets by selecting the magnifying glass.
Hi,
Don't connect your bt gps like another bt gps but like a wired gps with right port com. And TT doesn't manage your bt anymore...

GPS software for

Can anyone recommend GPS software for locating selected points
eg Going to the Air Show where there were thousands of cars.
I would like to set where I parked and then be able to find my car again by GPS. I have TomTom though this doesn't seem to work where there are no roads ie in a big paddock.
Any help would be appreciated.
Note I don't want to use GPRS, just GPS
try freewareppc.com
try freewareppc.com. I have found lots of useful software there. You might find one that will do what you want..

Did you try to add GPS position to favorites in TomTom?
Yes I tried tomtom gps position. It saved the location, though when I tried to navigate back to the GPS position (favourite) it could not trace the position.
It would probably work if you were somewhere in a street, but doesn't work when you are somewhere else such as offroad. If anyone else has managed to get it to work, please let me know. thanks
www.gpstuner.com
This will do it
i have gpstuner but it severly slows the trinity down, as the app never terminates, even with memMaid you can't kill it. Got to the point where i just uninstalled it as it was that bad, mad the device virtually unusable for me.
i have gpstuner v5.1. it works !
i tried the 2weeks trial version, and paid 48USD for the GEO version.
Z
I'm using BeelingGPS and it is doing great for me as I'm also a geocacher.
Simple GPS software
You may want to try NoniGPS or ODGPS (both simple and free, no map - just tracking).

using gps within an airplane

Has anybody made experiences in using the gps within airplanes/airliners? Does the sensivity suffice to work within an airliner? During a flight as a passenger I would like to follow the flight with a moving map.
Unless you get a very lucky spot near the window it won´t work...... Tried it in several different spots in a B767 cockpit - even at the only spot where my bluetooth mouse had some reception it did not work.....
Just use the airshow (the moving map) that´s provided on the screens in the seats in front of you by most airlines.....
so-so

Well, it's really difficult.
As has been said, the first thing you need is a good spot IN A WINDOW.
Then you have to be on the right side of the plane, to pick the most of the sky were the satellites for your current hemisphere are.
And finally a lot of patience, since picking the sats moving at 500 knots takes A LOT OF TIME, even with the latest SIRF-III mouse antennas, not to mention the Trinity embedded one....
I had a good lock today in my last flight, but as said, one of the inconvenients is that as soon as you move your PDA out of the window, you lose the GPS fix. A flying aircraft is a Faraday box, this is why the antennas are so visible and prominent OUTSIDE of the airframe.
Enjoy your flight and relax, the in-flight show moving maps are linked to the airliner built in GPS, and have a better database than anything you might install in your PDA.
And last but not least, you may be queried by flight attendants to verify you are not "transmitting" while in-flight.
Hope it helps.
2 weeks ago, on a plane to London (Ryanair), nobody was allowed to use any electronic device, including digital cameras, PDA's, mobile phones, whatever... The crew was not willing to negotiate at all: "Excuse me, sir, you MUST turn that off or I will have to take it from you. Do you understand?"
it depends....

Company policies regarding the use of electronics devices varies from one company to another, even sometimes at Captain's discretion or even Purser "opinion".
Most airlines have written policies about the use of devices, some even to the detail of mentioning Bluetooth and WiFi devices (usually forbidding its use). Check their Web page or the in-flight magazine.
As a general rule, ANY transmitter must be disconnected from doors-closed to doors-open, and then electronics devices may be used ONLY while in the "cruise" phase of the flight.
Hope it helps a bit.
Depends on airline
It is a policy for the individual airline and most do allow.
See http://gpsinformation.net/airgps/airgps.htm
There is a good article on the subject at this link. http://gpsinformation.net/airgps/gpsrfi.htm

I made good experiences with an SIRF-III mouse connected to a laptop. While sitting on a window seat, of course. But it depends very much on the type of aircraft. Within an Avro RJ85 the reception was excellent (up to 10 sats). On an A320 or B737 it was rather poor. I could imagine that the fuselage of the RJ85 is made of CFK and not aluminum.
I did also have luck on my flight from Sydney to lax. But google earth shows the altitude from my gps picture at 0 feet. That's one low flying 747-400...

Your lucky if they even let you go to the loo on a Ryanair flight, let alone actually do something slightly interesting. Ryanair is like riding in a cattle truck only less comfortable!

As a trainee helicopter pilot I have played around with an application called PocketFMS. I imagine it could be a pretty daunting program if you don't know what some of the jargon or abreiviations mean. I've tested it on the road (not used in the helicopter yet though) and it works great.
It even shows my altitude increasing when I drive up a large enough incline.
You need to get at least 3 satellite fixes for it to work, two for position and a third for altitude.

Gentlemen, maybe I'm missing something, but if you comply with airline regulations and turn the Trinity to Flight mode, it turns off ALL radios: GSM/UMTS, BT, WLAN and GPS. Is there a trick to keep GPS working? Or you just don't comply

I can't figure GPS out.

Hi,
I own a GlobalSat BT328 (http://www.buygpsnow.com/GlobalSat-...-Performance-Bluetooth-GPS-(BT-328)__916.aspx)
I turned bluetooth on, made my 8525 able to discover other devices, I made a partnership with the BT-GPS-335A64 (no idea why it has a different name here), I then opened a new COM port called BT-GPS-335A64 (COM0).
I have my bluetooth device on, and I loaded up google maps. I tried to track my location..I don't need a fancy GPS device. I just need to be able to see where I am on a map.
Google Maps is not able to find my GPS reciever. How is this? My 8525 found it. I have no other way to even test if the GPS works or not. I don't want to spend money on a tomtom or anything. I just want to track my location and google maps sounded like a good idea.
Any suggestions? This bluetooth device is supposed to work with the 8525. It found it, but not sure why google maps can not.
Thanks =)
Change the com port to com4
I did that but Google Maps is still unable to find the GPS reciever even though I have them right next to each other. It is strange because my 8525 was able to locate the GPS when I partnered them in the settings and all.
Any other reasons why this might not work?
If you've never gotten a fix with that GPS unit before, it could take 10 minutes or more for it to determine its current location. Make sure you are in a clear area, and give it a good 10 minutes to make sure it has a fix before giving up on it. Also, you might try downloading a program called VisualGPSce, which shows the current satallite status and signal information, and you'll be able to watch it as it works on getting the fix.
HTH
Brian.
I downloaded that program. It says "Fix not available". I'm going to let it run and see what happens. I am trying this inside my dorm room, but I'll try it on the road tomorrow. I just hope I can get it to work.
If nothing shows up after 10 minutes then what should I do? Is it possible the GPS device is no good? I'm not asking for a lot out of it. I just want to see my location in case I get lost somewhere.
..I waited about 10 minutes and my GPS auto shut off. The 8525 never found a fix with that program.
Edit: I searched and people have got that device to work with the 8125 before, but I haven't seen anything about the 8525. I want it to work so bad.
I picked up a Bluetooth GPS unit for £18. It's a 44 channel unit and does a cold boot in 20 seconds, warm boot in 4 seconds, and a hot boot in 1 second. Lasts for like 3 months on standby and 20 hours when in use. I've even had it working when it's been sat in the passenger footwell and inside a house (by the window)
All in all a great little unit.
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FASTEST-44-Ch...yZ156955QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I have the garmin mobile XT unit. it works great with the garmin software that came with it. what i have noticed, but haven't tested, is that it cannot pair with both google maps and the garmin software. this doesnt seem to effect you however.
i must say that i was able to ONCE and only ONCE out of many attempts get the GPS unit to come up on google maps. so it can be done, dont give up. it was neat to put it in satellite mode and see where i was. i agree it should be a lot simpler to do this, i think it was truly dumb luck the one time i was able to do it because each time i go back to try again it is not working. most GPS will pick up signal from a window, so its probably not that.
not sure if this is WM6 only, but in my setting>connection>external GPS there are a few options to tinker with.
GPS program port
GPS hardware port
and then the manage GPS automatically option
i feel like the first time i did get it to work, i never went into this menu. however the second time i tried, it gave me a message saying that the program and hardware ports could not be the same. then the third time i tried, it let them be the same, but still didn't work.
so unfortunately all i have to offer are a few tips to try and look at. i dont know enough about it to tell you what will make it work.
if you do get it to work please post back and let us know! i would love to be able to let my nav software run in the background and dictate for me which turns to make while i watch the world around me whiz by via satellite view =]

Inside your dorm room? At least tell me it is sitting on a window sill or somewhere that it can actually see the sky? If not, I'm not surprised it isn't working. For the first fix, take it outside where it can see as much of the sky as possible.

I set it to com port 4 and then had to go into the bluetooth settings and create a new com port and called it com port 4 and bingo everything started working.
Google Maps locates the GPS and position
TomTom found everything instantly when I set my GPS up in TomTom under com port 4.
Even WiFiFoFum is tracking everything perfectly.
I bought a JRT-29 for $61 it was one heck of a good deal. 42ch, Bluetooth reciever, included a car charger and usb cable. http://www.gpswindow.com/en/picture.asp?idtype=JRT28 (sorry the website sucks and I can't find the ebay auction that I bought it from)
My experience is that most of the GPS software is not designed to work with Com0... So, glad to hear change to Port 4 solve the problem.
Strange..I went near the window and the program GPSInfo (http://www.usglobalsat.com/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=25) went crazy showing me numbers and stuff. This was with COM4: 4800. All of the weird numbers stop when I turn my GPS unit off..but it still says no fix on that program.
Google Maps is still unable to track my location when I put it to find my settings or when I put it to COM4 4800..
VisualGPSec was unable to find a fix too.
So still no luck yet..
I got my Garmin gps10 working on my 8525 running WM6 today and thought I would share what I found.
Step 1: Pair the 2 devices (noticed with my Garmin I have to go in and refresh the services every time I turn the GPS unit on and off)
Step 2: Set your GPS outbound com port (I used 4 thanks to the help of this post)
Step 3: WM6 options Start>Settings>Connections>External GPS
Program Tab setting "com 5" or any other free one. VisualGPSce showed my other com ports used (1: Serial IR, 3: IrComm, 6: Serial, 7: Serial_BTUR)
Program Tab settings "com 4 4800" Or whatever you set your BT com port to and baud rate your device uses
Access Tab "check Manage GPS automatically"
Step 4: Set Google maps tracking to use WM6 settings
Step 5: Checked the "Track Location"
One other thing I noticed while using VisualGPSce I could not choose com 4 I had to use SER04: and instantly got connection to my Garmin.

Garmin XT versus TomTom - Why is Garmin Slow to track location?

Hi all, I am currently testing Garmin XT and I noticed that there seems to be a bit of a lag in the GPS when you are driving around. I have TomTom currently which is flawless. Is there perhaps some setting I missed with Garmin or is this just the way it is???

I believe this has to do with the nature of the software drivers and the way they interact with the hardware of the phone. It is something that may be different from phone to phone.
Ahhh darn thats a shame I am running a mogul. What I like about Garmin is the fact that it has gas prices and traffic for free unlike TomTom. Anyone else experiencing the same issue?
seems to work fine for me, but I use it with the bluecharts maps and not any street maps.
Hmm well I just wanted to post a follow up not sure if this will help since I haven't tried on the streets yet. I went into the settings and by default Garmin had selected "Use GPD Intermediate Driver" which worked for me but again I saw a lag while driving around and frequent redrawing of where I was relative to the map.
So now I just went back to the settings and hit "disable" which then brought up a list "Use Bluetooth GPS" "Use GPD Intermediate Driver" and "Use Serial GPS". I then selected "Use Serial GPS" and selected COM4:COM4. I had to do this a couple of times the software would scan but not let me keep COM4 but after a few tries it found COM4. I don't know if this will make everything faster but I will keep everyone posted.
Well even after the changes I made seems garmin is just slow tracking and when you are driving that can really suck.

How slow is slow? I use Garmin now, and used to use Tomtom, and while it might seem that the arrow doesn't move quite as often, it still seems to be doing what it's supposed to. Is the screen not updating as often?
I have both on my Mogul -- I just updated the Garmin with the 2008 maps and tested it the other day on a 2 hour trip - it was dead on but I did use a blue tooth GPS antenna Holux 240Slim instead of the built in GPS -- I find the built in is dependent on a data connection which I will lose when I go out of area.
I noticed the Garmin was within a few feet of being dead on -- see an exit and there it was on the map - including the talking parts when I was told to exit right, etc
Mule
I've used both and I have found that XT is slightly slower in its frame rate then TOMTOM. However, I have been a long time GPS user and LOVE the fact that I can now load all of my topograhical and marine maps to my P4000! The detail and accuracy of XT makes TOMTOM maps look like something off Dora the explorer. TOMTOM didn't even have roads drawn in for my home town. It was just a peininsula into water. On XT you even see the ATV paths that follow the coast! With the topo maps you can pick a lake, hike to it and fish your brains out! XT takes it off road. Tomtom is of no use in that department. Its a hikers dream: music, communications, nav, camera and more in one small device. To bad the P4000 isn't waterproof. My Garmin Rino must be feeling left out....
you might want to check which driver you are using... I'm on 42020... I know I had problems with 42030 (resetting my clock and what not) and heard 42040 had issues to.. just a thought...
i believe all gps lag one second behind real time. tomtom is the only software that predict 1/2 and 1 second ahead.
btw, does anybody know how to limit garmin xt auto zoom? sometime it zoom out way too much.
you can turn off auto zoom but you can't "control" it.. the default is to zoom out to show next turn... I just keep it turned off...
