To all good developers out there.
I (we) need a DeviceLock Application for the Touch Diamond cause existing lock APPs are to buggy for the Diamond. One is extremly draining the battery and dont lock all hardware keys another one lock all keys but slows down the device that the incoming call is not shown.
I am searching for a simple application that locks the device after I press the power button and unlock it by a slide to right on the TouchScreen. Same if a call is incoming.
Not more!!! A simple lock without additional features. Is there a way that anyone can develop this?????
What about the standard device lock that comes with WM?
You can also activate a today plugin for it, so on your today screen you press on the lock and your device is locked and the screen light is dimmed down and after some more time shut off.
Or you press the power button, then the device is locked and the screen light is immediately shut off.
To unlock you only need to press two buttons on the screen.
To unlock you can also press the power button to turn on the device and then pull out the stylus, no need to press the screen because with these two actions the device is also unlocked.
What's wrong about the standard WM device lock?
standard WM device lock is stupid! it is very difficult to unlock device in daylight. Gray button on gray background and dim backlight... what can be worst?
If anyone know how to change colors in that screen - it would be great!

Ok, that's a point. The screen is unlocked and things could happen unintentionally.
There is a thread about this, with some idea, but I think there is no good solution yet for this issue:

try this
Hi all
have you try Throttlelocker ?
i have install on my Diamond and it run good. light version, no battery problem, skinnable........
i think can be a good compromise.
main point: Throttlelocker can totally lock the device.
problem: you need to turn device in suspend mode manually. since now i have not found a way to use it under the backlight.
ciao
I personally use S2U2, it works perfectly on the Diamond and is fairly easy to unlock. The Slide 2 Answer feature is pretty good too - stopps you accidentally answering calls.

infact on Diamond S2U2 dont lock the home button, and battery slow down very very fast, expecially last version.
with S2U2 battery life is less than one day (medium device usage)
with Throttlelocker battery life is more than 2 days (medium usage too)
due to the fact that diamond have little (big!) batteryproblem, for me better to use Throttlelocker.

I haven't noticed any battery problems when using S2U2 on my diamond. Every time I put my phone down, i invoke S2U2 (I have it mapped to the long press call button - never automatically, maybe this has something to do with it).
I can normally go about 3-4 days on a single charge while S2U2 is running when I'm not using it.
The version I'm using is 1.18, but I'm going to update it soon.

Hi folks
I'm back again with some more dumb questions (bear with me - I'm Irish).
On my old Nokia, I could lock the phone by pressing 2 keys and hey presto, phone now safe!
With the HD, things seem a bit complex. Firstly, there's power managenent that controls how long the back light stays on for and how long the phone stays on for before going into stand by.
Q1. Is standby not another form of locking ? If so why not just press th epower button whenever you want to lock the phone and be done with it ?
Then there is the built in locking software that comes with the app.
Q2. Whats the problem with this? (i.e. long pressing the end key and choosing 'Lock the device'; Why do we even need S2U2 ?
Then there's S2U2 itself. The settings page is long and complex.
Q3. Is there a S2U2 manual anywhere ? (to explain some of those ambiguous settings)
Finally, and here is my most important question...
Q4. Can I use my HD like I used to use my Noika - i.e. press a key or 2 to lock the goddam phone an just be done with it ?
As it is, when I want to use my phone, I have to press the power button to take it out of standby, and then I have to slide the S2U2 unlock switch. Its a lot of hassle just to make a phone call.
Is it me? Am I that stupid? What am I doing wrong ? What am I missing ?
Doesn't pressing the "End call" button for 2-3 seconds also lock the phone?
Regards!
I do understand what you're saying. I figured out something really basic just the other day, that is if your phone is locked or in sleep mode just pull out your stylus and it'll unlock and wake up.
Just 1 movement.
Sorry if this is really common knowledge and you already know this but sometimes we overlook the more basic functions on such a complex device!!
Cheers

Power button into standby is a fine lock for me. Nearly impossible to accidently knock the power button to turn it back on.

I like how the phone unlocks when you take the stylus out but i didnt like how it locks the phone when you put the stylus back in, so i removed that function using the options in gyrator
I have got TOUCH HD since 1week.
I haven't problem with touch hd like touch diamond.
it is in my pocket but the new phone canvas and the sensitive key prenve nt missing call.
for me no need s2u2 or pocket shield like diamond.
is there a registry option for disabling the unlock when the stylus is removed/falls out ????

Standby locking
I also "lock" my phone by sending it to standby with the power button. This seems to work realy good for me. The only problem is that the HD wakes up if someone is calling. So i often answer a call by accident. Does anyone know a way to deactivate the automatic wake up?
I tried the registry hack with autolocking but this doesn't work for calls either.

Should the device lock when I put the stylus in? I get the impression from this thread that it should but mine doesn't?
So, I have PocketShield installed and it's set to slide or light unlock and answer. Quite often when I get a call it takes so long to unlock and answer, the person is gone...
There are maybe a few options -
1) I've installed and uninstalled so much stuff, maybe I need to start fresh? I have noticed the HD is a little 'laggy' now. Should I hard reset and install things back on slowely, testing it's responsiveness as I go?
2) Maybe I should switch to S2U2? I used this for a long time on my Kaiser, but have been concerned by everyone saying it drains battery power.
3) Do I need a screen lock program? The device only wakes up on a phone call and now you have a slide to answer/ignore anyway. Do the hardware keys do anything at this point? Am I safe to carry it round in my case without a screen lock?
Does anyone else suffer from this, or just me?
Thanks for any help/advice in advance.
Having the same issue. Sometimes my slide option simply doesn't work first few attempts. My solution is to use the "answer call" key beneath the main screen until this gets resolved.
S2U2 works like a charm on the HD and it doesn't draw additional battery as far as I have seen over the past few days.
When u have a call, u don't need to slide so you unlock the device then accept/reject the call.
Depends on what you have set, you can either have the original accepting/rejecting HTC screen poping up to take/reject your calls,
or you can set it so u have a new slider appearing on the wallpaper of S2U2 to accept/reject the calls
Try it, you won't regret it guys.
Well, yesterday I hard reset my HD and installed just the stuff I wanted. I've gone back to S2U2 and everything seems much much better so far. The only annoying thing is sometimes the phone wakes in landscape mode still, even though it's set to not rotate in Gyrator (and doesn't when it's woken, it stays in whatever it is in.)
Whats the difference between S2U2 and the phones default slide to answer phone ?
In other words, why install S2U2?
Its a very well presented Screen Lock, that's why. The question is just how to go from that to answering a call...
Id I have S2U2 installed, and a call comes in on my HD, what happens? does s2u2 take over from the default "slide to answer" system?
Yes it does. I think the problem I had was it wasn't doing that properly before hand. They were obviously conflicting with each other and I was struggling to answer calls.

Well S2U2 will lock your phone screen and buttons so you do not start by mistake an application or a phone call when the device is in your pocket.
Even if by mistake u click on the power on button, ur device is still locked until u unlock it using a slider like on the i-phone.
It allows u to display a wallpaper of your choice, different then the one on your today screen or in TF3D. It allows u to display clock date, network signal, tasks, missed calls, SMS, etc ...
Try it, it's free and very nicely designed
I tried to use S2U2 and found that just like every other locker it is behaving wrongly after a call - it leaves the device unlocked! So if I listen to music and get a phone call I'll have to pull it out of the pocket to lock again. There is a silly option to lock after each call of course, but this is just stupid - I just want the device to stay locked until I unlock it - how difficult is this?
Funnily, the only locker behaving properly is the stock Windows one, but it has a backlight bug and switches the device to Home screen.
It's just amazing how nobody can do such a basic function right.

Just tried it few seconds before posting, called myself from the office phone, answered the call using the slider is S2U2, the screen turned off, I ended the call by pressing on the end call button on my HTC touch HD, and the S2U2 screen lock was there, the device was still locked.
It works perfectly with the touch HD.
Hi all,
I have decided to uninstall S2U2 and I don't want any other locking applications. However, is there is a way I can have the standard device lock activated with a short press of the power button?
Currently I am having to hold the 'End call' button until it locks, then turn the screen off with the power button.
Thanks
I have a pin setup and use the short press of the power button to put the phone into powersave 0 whixh then outs the phone into pin lock after a short while

I don't know about your device...
On my HD you can press the end button and count until 3, and the device is locked
I can't remember whether it's in HD Tweak or Advanced Config, but there's an option to automatically lock the keypad on screen turning off (both timed out or power button press I assume, but not tested) so you could try that?
Edit: instead of being lazy I actually looked it up - it's in HD Tweak, option 4.1; Lock -> AutoLock
Just tried it and it works, turn backlight off by short power press and it's locked a well as screen turning off!
Good tip: works for me!
By the way: you can configure what happens when you pres the "disconnect" button too.
Guys
Thanks for this thread. I am very confused when it comes to locking the phone. Can anyone tell me...
Does the built in device lock work well? Will it keep the phone locked when a call comes in ?
If so, then why do people use S2U2 or other third party apps? Also some people say that S2U2 drains the battery. Is this true? How does it drain the battery?
The HD tweak had the disadvantage that when the screen turns in 'shaded' state the device is also locked.
Then when unlocking the device the screen stays 'shaded'.

Maybe it takes you 10 seconds to count to 3.
I've finally got there with locking my HD... I had a S710 before the HD, and I liked the fact that on that I could hold down the "end call" button, and that it would lock the phone and turn the backlight off. The screen would then turn off completely after whatever time I had entered (2 mins I think). And on unlocking the device the backlight would turn on.
On my HD I have now disabled the device password, but enabled my PIN request, so that it secures the phone if it has been turned off completely. This means that I can now hold down the "end call" button for 3 seconds or so and it locks the device (requiring a 2-tap process to unlock, like the S710). I have also used the standard windows mobile settings (power) to have the backlight automatically turnoff after 30 seconds, and have used HD Tweak (setting 4.1) to autolock the device when the backlight turnsoff. The only problem is that when AutoLock happens using HDTweak, when I unlock it the backlight fails to turn back on, even once I have started using the screen. Any ideas on how to fix this?

Just to confirm my above question regarding this specific feature of HD Tweak... I have got this working on my HD now too, but when it autolocks, and I unlock it, the backlight doesn't turn back on, and the only way to make it turn back on is to hardbutton off and on the device (not power-off, just press the button the top of the phone and press it again).
This is stopping me from using the HD Tweak autolock now, which is annoying because it does precisely what I need! Can anyone offer any advice?
I've just realised that it actually says within HD Tweak itself (on 4.1 option selector) that this is a known issue... any idea on if and when it will get fixed?
How about using Gyrator to lock the device? I have set it to lock the device and switch off the screen on inserting the stylus. Also, I have it set to unlock and switch the PDA on when the stylus in removed.

Mhh, I also think it's very annoying. I first used the auto lock feature by setting
HKey_CURRENT_USER/ControlPanel/BackLight/AutoDeviceLockEnable = 1, but I also have the backlight-issue, which is really annoying.
I also installed S2U2, but after installing that program the battery-life was inacceptable. By now I'm using the manual method, pressing hang-up for 3 seconds. It works, but I often forget it, and it then happens easily that I press the hard-button which awakes the phone from standby and I make pocket-calls.
The auto-lock feature is also exactly the thing I need, except the fact that I get the backlight issue then. Does anybody know how to fix the backlight issue? Maybe by editing another key in the registry?
Regards,
Tobi

I use S2U2 at first, but it drains power too much, so I uninstall it after 2 days.
Then I use your method - hold the end call button to lock the device.
Now, I change the right softkey to invoke a small application that will turn off the machine (just like press power button). When I take out the stylus, the machine will on again.
Thus, I don't need to press any button, and I feel it is better......personally.......

Yes, but when I activate standby and put the phone into my pocket, I often accidently hit the button again, which reactivates the phone. hit_one_button_to_unlock ist not tobi-proof
I only found the ridiculously cumbersome holding of the call end button as a method to evoke an automatic lock.
Any suggestions?

there's afew locking software
S2U2
ThrottleLock
PocketShield
TouchLockPro
take your pick!
Using HD Tweak, you can set to automatically lock with stand by
You can use the right "button" to force lock by holding 3 sec.
I use VJDeviceLock, so it auto locks, but pressing the hangup button is also helpful (although this can be set to do other more useful things).

I can't remember how one configures this "officially", I haven't explorered the Blackstone's out of the box offerings much, but if you launch
\windows\LongPressEndKeyApp.exe
you can change the function of the end key to "Always display quick list", toggle airplane mode, lock device, terminate date connection, toggle vibrate.
That's more useful for the lock device function IMHO, as using VJDeviceLock or Ston's registry setting (thanks!), you don't need to waste the few hardware buttons on locking the phone when it can do it automatically.
As a suggestion, you could also replace the long End Key with for instance, VJWMPlayerControl to wake the phone up and start playing music etc. Or launch a custom launcher screen etc? Rotate the display. Etc.

but from initial testing it does seem to stuff around with the backlight once you unlock the device - after 40 seconds it dims and remains dimmed even if you continue using the device LAME!
Hi, my typical procedure before putting the phone in the pocket is to hold right soft button to lock the screen and to switch off the screen with the power button. I wonder if there is a way to do it at once. You press the power button and screen goes off locked?
Thanks.s.
Install AutolockScreen 1.7 (I'm at work so don't have the cab with me, but if you search this site you'll find it. Install the cab and then go to Start\Settings\System\SmartLock and tick Suspend lock.
LockDevice works well...

Do either of these lock screen apps consume a lot of power?
I understand they have also been created with power saving feaures but what do they run like in a coarse of a day for instance, do they drain the battery quickly?
Thanks.
HD Tweak also has option for autolock when device turned off

It does but it has a problem with the background light not undimming after locking.
Doesn't the phone automatically lock itself when you turn off the screen? Mine seems like it always does.

Mine doesn't do that unfortunately. I am using the app suggested above by ClydeB1 and its working great, not much battery drain either.
Regards.

My phone is set to quite dim anyway in Power settings so this doesn't affect me.......hence why I forgot about it
I've attached the cab which ClydeB1 was talking about, i.e. SmartLock 1.7

What happens if you just turn the screen off with the power button? Does touching send/back/etc turn it back on?

On my device, no. If you turn screen off, only way to turn it on again is with the power button (unless someone rings etc)

Yes, if you just press the power button the screen goes off but it is not locked and although touching the buttons does not turn it back on, if an sms comes in and wakes the device the buttons are then active and could be accidentally touched whilst in your pocket. With the screen locked this does not happen and you need to first unlock the screen to access the sms or the device in general.

Oh ok thanks for the info. Mine does unlock when I get a call/sms but I text a lot so I prefer it to do that, otherwise I'd be wasting a lot of time unlocking it every time I got a message.
Thanks for the hint ClydeB1 and thanks for the cab Fallen Spartan.
I tried SL 1.7 and there are three things, which I do not really like.
1. The phone returns to the very same screen where it was switched off. Some may consider it a pre. I prefer to see the clock when I switch it on.
2. The screen blink once when the phone is switchd on. I find it a bit irritating.
3. I do not see how I can uninstall it.
So, I wonder if you can undim the screen in HD Tweak by touching it or you need to do something extra?
You uninstall it as with any other cab. It's called Chobit Company Smartlock on the list of apps.
If you do use the hd tweak edit, you'll need to push the power button twice I think (it's been a long time since I used it I've forgotten), the first time to activate the screen (you'll see the screen but the backlight will not light up properly) then again to undim and then you can unlock the screen. I think that's the sequence, you'll need to play a little.

The way I had activated the lock was by pressing and keeping pressure on the end call softkey, after a few seconds it vibrates and activates the lock. It comes on automatically when you put the screen off or restart the phone.

Auto-lock screen
I'm running CLEAN ROM (B version) with SPB Mobile Shell.
Considering I don't want any superficial apps installed on my HD, I used HD Tweak and turned autolock on.
To get over the "background light not undimming after locking" problem, I initially unchecked "Automatically adjust backlight" under Settings > System > Power > Backlight and set at 100%. I also set the "Dim backlight on Device" when on battery power to the same time as "Turn off device if not used for". In my case that was 1 minute. I tested and this worked fine.
I then went back in and checked the "Automatically adjust backlight" checkbox.
I also performed the wake up with volume button reg edit making it easier to wake up device.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Keybd]
"DefaultKeyLock"= 0
UPDATE:
Just tested again and I realised if you wake up device but don't unlock. The screen will automatically dim. Unfortunately if you unlock immediately after, the dim screen issue rears it's ugly head again. The only workaround at this point is to completely disable dim backlight.
