I recently bought a cingular 8525 on ebay. The seller said it was stuck on a 3 color screen, blah blah. I knew I can fix it if it was stuck on the 3 color screen, but I turn the phone on and the screen is just white. I was wondering if this means the device is bricked, and if there is any way I can fix this. I've tried a hard reset.
It's called the "White Screen of Death." You can read more about it in the wiki or here.
I'm not positive if it's that or not. I don't see a complete white screen, I see streaks of gray on the left side of my phone. I have a picture, hope this helps. Is this the white screen of death, or do I just have to replace the lcd screen?
If you see the booloader screen at times, then the lcd should be fine. If not, then it is in fact the WSOD.
Nope, I don't see the bootloader screen at all. I just received the package today, put in the battery, turned on the phone, and just a white screen. Nothing else. Doesn't do anything but sit in a white screen with some gray streaks.
I fixed up one White Screen yesterday , that is , white screen before, and display normally after.
I just flash the phone with the origional rom, and after a bootloader reset( OK+power+reset), the white screen magicly start to display stuff!
So give it a try!
^^ Thanks for the help, but I already tried updating it to the official WM6 rom and it failed.
Ther are about 1001 things that can cause the WSOD - somtimes software, sometimes hardware and sometimes multiple things. To track down the cause can be a major headache and even if you do fix one thing you may have something else causing another problem resulting in WSOD... Most people advise NOT to buy a 2nd hand hermes with this as it is too much of a pain to fix. If you want to try however, you can purchase new LCD's off ebay for about $100AUD and you'll need the HTC service manual to take it apart.. Here - http://michael-channon.spaces.live.com/PersonalSpace.aspx?_c02_owner=1
Make sure you have a number 6 torque key, a small flat blade and phillips head screwdriver.
All the best...
Cheers...

Thought I'd try talking whilst going for a jog and managed to get some sweat into my XDA Mini. The result: the LCD still operates, but the backlight is broken.
I took it to a repair shop to see if they could repair it but they say I need a full new LCD - not so cheap. The guy seemed a bit dodgy so I thought I'd double check people's thoughts here before I go and spend the $150 to fix it.
I'm sorry if I'm insulting your intelligence, but have you tried holding down the power button while the screen is on? The backlight can be toggled on and off by holding the power button down a few seconds.
Just making sure!
(Eg. Check your floppy drive before you decide that the hard disk is dead - store attendants can actually forget things like that)
Haha,
Yes I have tried everything relating to normal backlight usage, including a hard reset.
I know the backlight is stuffed because for a while it would turn on for a sec before turning off, then finally it went kaput.
Well the backlight probably is stuffed. And $150 is a bit steep for a new screen, but I doubt you will find any better - though if you want try eBay. I just searched eBay US for 'xda mini LCD' and got a range of LCDs from $70 to $100.
The installation isn't too hard, as long as you're careful - it just involves opening the Magician (which takes patience, but isn't too hard or risky), unplugging the old screen, detaching it, and installing the new screen.
Darn,
I found a screen for AUS$115 delivered on ebay.
Is there any way I can tell if I have the black or yellow screen connector without opening the phone up (I'd prefer to have to open it as few times as possible). My guess is that it would be one of the black ones as I think it's an earlier model.
Hey maximus, I know it's been a while. Did you fix your screen? I've got a Trinity with me (also known as Dopod D810) and I put a new screen into it. It worked, but after a few weeks, the alignment went off and would not reconfigure no matter what I tried. Then suddenly, the backlight went dead but the LCD still worked (I can see the content on the screen if I shine a torch on it). I'm an experienced phone repairer but I thought I'd check to see if you did anything to fix your original screen.
I've got the phone open - the connectors are fine. I've tried applying light pressure to the sides of the LCD, hoping that maybe it was just a loose connection inside the LCD, but to no avail.
Looks like I'll have to buy another LCD
hey i'm have=ing the same problem !
there are not any option but new screen
Do I blame the onboard video or the LCD itself for this problem? I've taken the phone apart and re-seated the motherboard connections, which was no help. If I connect using EveryWAN the phone appears to be working fine, in fact I flashed the T-Mobile ROM and than the Button ROM thinking it was a IPL/SPL issue. Even if I try to start in boot loader mode the screen still looks the same.
Just trying to decide If I need to replace the motherboard or the LCD.
Thanks,
Bump back to the top!
Screen seems intact without any damage visible, no cracks or out?
Had this problem once with my old Universal, was the colour transfer wires that were loose, but pretty sure the Uni is totally different to our wizards.
Prehaps open her up and see if theres anything thats loose prehaps.
I had it opened and re-seated both the connecting cables, but no luck.
Ive had this problem with my wizard .. i couldnt find a solution. tho i didnt really try very hard. Basicaly just picked up another one on ebay for like £30 seemed cheaper than spending the time and effort fixing it. I think mine got progressivly worse. It used to do it occasionaly and now just it as soon as its switched on
i have a same sort of problem...
left of the screen fills with lines and the whole screen fades to white.
turning on and of the screen via power button takes it back to normal but then it happens again.
noticed it only happen in portrait so i have to set it to landscape all the time
for some rom and spl's it happens just a few times a day and others i cant use it in portrait.
If i find a solution it might be working for you to
Fading white screen of death
Could be the battery. Have you tried a new battery?
Solved.
The LCD itself was bad.
i just replaced the screen on my focus n i used it all day n made some calls then all of a sudden the screen went black on a call n it hasnt come back on since. i have tried taking out the battery, plugging it into the computer, i even updated it. and still yet a have a black screen. the touch funtions still work i can use the phone unlock it select things i just have no display. please help
Screen issue? You might need to take it apart again and check the connectors...
i tried that today n still no luck
As I said, screen problem? Although new, it might be gone. Which might also indicate another issue related to the screen (some circuit overloading?)
Today my hd2 has shown some strange color issues: Grey / Transparent black causes a grin/yellow tint. I did the usual troubleshooting (soft and hard reset) but it did not help. I also read some old threads about it saying that I should flex the screen to make it go away (http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...m.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1003265). I tried that without luck though I'm not sure if I "flexed" the screen enough but I'm afraid of breaking it.
Anyone an idea what caused this problem? I did drop the phone a few times over the years, however, today, when it all started, not. Secondly, I can't really think of a broken screen as it seems that only a specific grey is tinted yellow/green (the grey whatsapp uses for their contact without photos and the grey used for the keyboard when you eneter your pin.
Any help is really appriciated... Don't want to loose the king :crying: as this color issue makes really unconfortable.

EDIT: I'm on a european hd2 with the latest Pdaimatejam WP7 rom (v8.2) and I even tried to reflash the rom... Seems a hardware fault:crying:
Today morning the issue faded away without doing anything at all . Might be that the screen got somehow pressure causing some disorder of the fluid crystals and with time, they reordered themselves...
Last night I was busy using my S4 with it plugged into my PC.
It was resting on a flat hard surface. Nothing abnormal.
I was looking at the screen, not touching the phone and it suddenly turned a greenish tint colour with noisy coloured artifacts on the screen. I could still use the phone, but it looked odd. Everything was still visible at this point, just tinted green and with the artifacts.
I decided to power off the phone, and then power it on again to see what would happen.
Afterwards, the screen failed to turn on... somewhat. It's been doing the following behavior since:
When turning on, screen on black, following by a quick split second flash of the 'Galaxy S4' logo. Then black again. When charging the phone, I can see the battery 'loading' symbol flash too, or when going to download mode, I can see the 'warning' flash. When holding down the power button to force the phone to reboot, I can see the screen flicker too. It appears that I can see some flash when the screen first powers on... but it can't stay powered on(?)
The first time this happened, I could see a 1 pixel line on the top representing the colours of my boot animation, when booting but that only happened a few times. Now it does not.
I have opened the device, and checked the screen cable. Detached it, inspected it for dirt or dust. Gave the connectors a gentle blow with a hair dryer to remove any dust and re-attached to no avail.
I can still access the device via ADB and see it's screen via Android Screen Monitor.
The digitiser is working, as I can touch the phone and control it... it appears to be a problem with the GPU(?) or the LCD?
Can anyone make any recommendations? I really hope I don't have to spend lots of money on fixing this.
Thanks, all!
Shameless self bump. Merry Christmas! Santa threw a nice BRICK of coal (or phone) for me
I don't like to bump, but I am going to have to... sorry
I'm abroad, and Samsung said they can't fix it under warranty while abroad? I'll have to send it back home. Really? Bleh!
Has anyone else had this issue before? Is the problem just the LCD, or could it be something else?
One more bump... Anyone have any idea?

Are you also having the same issue?
If I get my Samsung looked at by a Samsung repair center overseas (outside my country of warranty) will that void my warranty?
Still haven't got an answer for my issue... so.... bump!
