Wizard suddenly died yesterday

Hello,
I've a Wizard that is approximately 20 months old. Yesterday, before I went to bed, I set the alarm clock on the Wizard, put it next to bed and went to sleep.
This morning upon waking up I tried to switch on the Wizard but it couldn't. Firstly, I thought the battery was discharged, so I tried charging through USB on my computer -- it wouldn't charge or start. Then, I tried charging on the default charger -- again nothing.
I tried removing battery and soft reset - nothing. It's really weird, yesterday I left it working, no-one has touched it and today it's totally non-responsive.
Any ideas what might be wrong/how can I bring it back to life? Would a hard-reset help?

Unfortunately I can't remember, however I have an alarm which sounds periodically when the battery is below 20%, so I'm guessing I had at least 20 percent. Could be wrong, of course, but most likely above 20%.

The Wizard came with a 64MB card I think. I had around 10MB free space. 3-4 applications, 2-3 mp3s. Nothing unusual.

Same thing (sort of) happened to mine after about 187 months. I was using mine and it hung up. I hit the reset button and that was the end of that. Even when plugged in it does nothing. Tried a hard reset... nothing. Soft reset.... nothing. Dead. Zip. Nadda.
Good news? Replaced it with a Kaiser!

Mine died too when i was flashing...
Leave the phone in the original charger for a while and see if it picks up...sometimes it comes back to life by doing that...
If that doesnt work, try a new battery, you might be lucky...

A somewhat strange development occurred today:
Today (3 days after it stopping working) I randomly tried to switch the Wizard on and it indeed switched on. It showed that it had 0% battery. It didn't even show 0%, basically the battery charge graph was empty - no number, no fill, nothing.
While it was on charge the charge light was on (while it was 'broken' the charge light was off when I tried to charge). So I left it to charge and when I checked back in 15 minutes it was back to being 'dead'. Can't be started, no charge light, nada.
I don't really know what's going on, however I'm highly suspicious of the battery. Currently, I'm periodically trying to switch it on again so I can backup my data.
Any ideas what might be wrong with it, do you think it's the battery or is it more serious?

The battery won't charge if it gets to low.
There is a thread about using a 9V battery to get the battery up to a level so it will charge. I don't have the link for it, try searching for it or maybe someone else will reply.
You might have a bad battery. I bought a new battery because I didn't think I was getting the life that I should. I tried using the old battery about a month after when I had to run out and my main was low. About 15 minuets later my phone started shutting of and rebooting. That was the end of that battery.

Yep, it's possible. If the battery is to empty, you can't charge the phone. It is stupid but it's just like that. You also can't power on the phone without a battery with the charger connected.
Yesterday I received my wizard and I had to revive my battery too because it was completely empty. I used a self made 5V power supply and after 2 minutes charging I placed the battery in the wizard and was able to charge and boot with the charger connected.

Here's the 9v battery trick, connect the + from the 9v battery to the + of the phones battery and the - to the -, hold there for only 10 seconds then remove the connection for 10 seconds and then repeat the process about 8 to 10 times and then put the battery back in the phone and connect it to the wall charger to fully charge.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to do the jump-start thing.
However, I've hard time determining which is the - and which is the + pin layout on the battery, since the label is not correctly applied.
As far as I can see the - is the one at the far right, however I'm not sure which is the + pin.
Can someone help me with this, please?

When you take out the battery and put it back in that direction ,turn and face up the connector side fasing you,the first connector from the rightside of the battery is the ' + ' and the last is ' - ' towards the leftside.Be careful while connecting and try not to touch other connectors. Don't keep the connections longer then 10 seconds interval.

My MDA battery also died and went below re-chargeable state. Your trick to use 9volt battery to jump-start it worked just fine for me. I connnected for about 20 seconds (2x times) and plugged it back into phone and connected USB cable to it and my nice yellow charging light came back on. After about 30 mins, I could use the phone.

easier fix, take a standard usb cable. rip off the smaller end with a wire cutter, expose the red and black wire. take out your battery, than connect the negative(black) wire to the negative end of the battery, than the red wire to the positive end of the battery, leave it in there for exactly 3-5 minutes for jump start. after that turn your wizard on, and quickly shove it inside a new usb cable. or the wall charger.
note:
if not done correctly, you may damage your wizard or the battery. if theres a power overload or your power goes out. your wizard will burn out!
feedback is greatly appreciated.
p.s after that my battery seem to be weak, charge barely holds for 12 hours. after 12-14 hours it will die out. so i suggest buying a new battery after couple of days.

Thanks guys! Vario died yesterday and wouldn't turn on or charge.
Tried the 9v battery recommended here and it worked! I was a little unsure which end was - and which was + but using the advise above, got it right. Wasn't too worried as found and ordered a replacement from ebay this morning for £7.
The first connector on the right hand side, nearest the end of the battery is the + the one more towards the middle and further away from its corresponding end is -, or at least, thats what worked for me.

Experiencing the same issues after I set aside my Mini S as it was experiencing problems with regards to its screen alignment. Wasn't able to charge it during that time I kept in the drawer unused - due to frustration as I can't use it anymore. After downloading a guide to disassmble it so I could remedy the problem I found out that it won't power up anymore even with a new battery.
Well, haven't tried the jumpstart thing and the original battery was disposed of already to try the jumpstart idea. Could it be the internal battery is causing the problems? I opened my unit up and tested the internal battery for power and it registers a measly .2V left. Will use the 9V thing to power it up (as been doing that before on watch batteries that are hard to find replacements) before I do it on the main battery. Here's hoping it works as the Mini S has been quite useful for me until now.
UPDATE: I charged the internal battery and it now reads 1+ V and the external battery at 3+ V. No luck yet though as the unit still won't show any life. Any suggestions?

Final solution: power-off while battery indicator at XX% problem

I started this thread because I lost lots of time to find the answer to my problem scattered over many, many threads. I hope this posting can save a lot of time for others.
The problem
The HTC Universal suffers from the problem that the device turns off while the battery indicator still shows juice left.
The cause
It's the battery or the way how the device interacts with the battery. It can have something to do with ROM upgrading while the battery is not at 100%.
Solution 1: Buy new battery
A lot of people will immediately tell you to buy another battery. That's a solution. Batteries are not that expensive anymore. See Ebay for example.
Solution 2: Recalibrate the battery
For me it wasn't a solution (it was a new device with a brand new battery! And yes, I upgraded to WM6 immediately after purchase)
Source: the greatest part of the solution for me was provided here by Jwrightmcps.
1. Charge the battery overnight with the supplied poweradapter, not with the USB cable, then:
2. Drain the battery without SD-card, powersaving off and backlight on full, then:
3. At some level, the device will turn off. Switch it on and go to the bootloader by backlight+power+reset button and drain the battery until it's really empty, then:
4. Charge the battery again with the supplied poweradapter

You can also try to put your battery in the freezer overnight (wrap it in plastic) to drain it, as I once did with a laptop battery. Let it get back to room temperature before you insert it back into your device.

Prevention
Always drain your battery before you charge it.
Charge the battery with the power adapter not with the USB cable or car adapter
My story
I bought the device new in store and charged it in the car when driving home (one hour). After that I hooked up the device to my PC and upgraded to WM6. In the evening, when the battery was arround 40% it shut down... Never got a battery low warning.

Effects of Bootloader mode?
A simple (silly?) question: if I enter Bootloader Mode do I loose all my data? Can I enter bootloader mode and just restart with no more effects than a soft reset?

When to exit bootloader-mode (i.e. reboot the device normally)? Before charging (before step #4) or after it is fully charged (after step #4)?

Well I don't want to invest in my universal as i'm changing it to another one, so I'd better fix my battery. I tried to do like this:
- discharge battery to 40% (device shut down)
- connected the + and - to a battery-powered speaker system and played music some time. This could discharge it more, what do you think about it? Well I can't say from my experience because I must wait for my device to discharge now

The bootloader mode is used in this example to drain the battery. The bootloader is 'exited' when the battery is empty...
Draining the battery in the bootloader mode will take long, because backlight is not enabled.

That is also a nice way to drain the battery. Be carefull that you don't shortcircuit the battery.

doesn't work for me, seem it is a software wm6 reason, so probably there is one solution:
ROLLBACK TO WM5
maybe try to change another part of rom? update bootloader? i don't know... i prefer wm6 over wm5 but this gives me no choice...

when i had this problem, i just bought a fat battery... and followed the prevention steps. I only charge when my battery warning notification appears (less than 10%) and I dont use the usb cable anymore. When I recall why I got the problem with the previous bat, i realize it was because i had been using wm5torage a lot which required plugging usb cable. So now, when I need to sync my phone, I just use my old bat. My new bat has never given me problems (had it for 6 months now) and Im happy with it (although it streeetched my case a bit).

Just a few question before I do all the steps:
1. why we should charge it overnight on 1st step? can we stop charging after greenlight?
2. why drain batt without SD card? Can we drain it with SD inserted?
3. after on bootloader mode, it's only it? just leave it like that untill batt really empty itself?

When I entered bootloader mode at 50% battery remaining it turns off after a short while. I connected the battery to a small motor to drain it but after a short while that too stops. When I checked the battery with volt meter it still showed 45-50% charge. What should I do to drain it?

Same with me. 2 times bootlader mode, just luck on 25% left before really off. Never got drain until 0%.

Connect it to a Voltmeter and lavce it connected until the voltmeter read 0.0volts. But be warned this might take a WHOLE DAY OR TWO. Has anyone tried the freezer method? does it really drain the battery?

I'm going to try the freezer method.

Tried freezer initially for 5 minutes and then for whole hour no harm came to battery but no gain as well! Charge didn't drop even one percent. Isn't there some fast way? Waiting with voltmeter for a couple of days is tiresome.

And now the agony has increased even though battery is fully charged if I remove the charger my device turns off. Trouble is that original batteries aren't available here in Pakistan, Rawalpindi to be precise. Now what to do?

Freezer method
I tried the freezer method for one night.
Next morning I took out the battery and let it come to roomtemp.
Took a long time charging (2,5 hours), but no result.

My device switch off randomly some time at 95% some time 50% etc.
i am using jw wm6.

you know what? I wonder if it isn't just a problem with jw rom... because most people encountering that problem use jw's rom... could anyone check it out? because my neww uni comes in few days...

help with battery power

My new XDA Exec has developed a fault. It works OK when plugged in to the USB on my laptop or charger but when running on battery will only do so for a short time. In fact a matter of a few minutes.
The battery indicator shows the battery at 100% when charged but the phone turns off variously at 95 - 98%. I tried a soft reset and not change.
I tried discharging the battery using small lamp then recharging in the phone. The battery indicator did show a lower %age 80 ish but not as low as I would have thought. Subsequent charging made no difference and the problem persists. Has anyone seen this before? Any bright suggestions?

You battery is dead therefore you would need to change. You are not unique with this problem. That is common issue for Universal (exec) batteries. For your new battery: dont charge with the USB cable and charge when is completely drained.

From what I understand the LI ion batteries don't have a charge memory due to milisecond pulse charging so pardon me for asking but what does the total discharge do for the battery? Obviously it does something but what? (Not doubting you but I'm curious). Is there a away to ressurect a defective battery such as the one I have currently or is it a lost cause. I know some batteries can improve with either heating or cooling by about 20 - 40°C from normal operating temeprature, have you any experience with this?
Do you know if some makes of batteries are better than others?
Please pardon the inquisition but as I spend a lot of time in remote areas it's often quite handy to be able to bodge rig stuff in order to effect a temporary fix and it seems any bits of knowledge help!

Hi, I have the exact same problem...works fine when usb or mains connected but only for a few minutes when on the battery. Usually when I give it some heavy task stuff it will suddenly just blank out the acreen and die.
I'm going to try and do what's suggested on the wiki page about masking off the charge indicator contact with tape - run the thing down and charge up again.
otherwise it's a new battery - not expensive - and plenty about on ebay.

Be Frank I am not battery specialist. Therefore I cant give a deep explanation what makes the Universal Battery having so many problems with USB charging. For my understanding it is the slow charge which leads to Battery overheat. Therefore All the post here regarding the Battery problems suggest not keeping the universal charged with USB. Just search for Post for "battery problems" and you will find few "explanations"
In Regards whether you could reverse your battery issue. From my previous experience I would say the max the you can get back is some 10-15%. However in your case the issue seams more severe as you device turns off by 90-100% therefore I think you would need to order new Battery.
following procedure I follow to drain my battery:
1) Turn off You Phone Radio (important)
2) disable the "Turn off Backlight" and put your device brightness to "full"
3) let your device drain the battery by him self( prevent doing anything with your device during this time. I found starting application, touching screen etc. leads that the device request a pick of power which the battery is not able to provide and turns the device off.
4) after certain time your battery will be to weak to keep the device on.
5) push the "power button + backlight button + reset pin" to put your device in to bootloader mode. (your screen will be almost off just some info like SERIAL or Bootloader Version will be visible)
6) again keep the device in this mode to drain as much you can until you cant see anything on the screen.
7) repeat this point6 few times as sometimes the device turns of but after trying again the button combination you can put it back to bootloader.
With above the aim is to drain the battery much as possible. After that you charge your device with power connection for min.12 hours. I guess you will gain few % however repeat the draining and charging procedure for next couple charging cycle to see how much max you will get back.

After a complete drain, the battery wont recharge:
1) Connecting the power cord it starts the boot process, after few seconds the power led ligths in red once, the screen blanks and the boot restarts again and again.
2) Using the usb cord the power led flashes in red without further actions.
I have to throw away the battery, I guess.

Cesare, One thing you could try before given up on your battery. Try to Use your power connection to charge for while before starting up your device.

Cesare, you right when you plug in the device it will boot up. However after while (ca.10-15) when the first initialization complete you could go and switch off the screen(with power button) which takes allot power. Anyhow in your case it is really strange as your device behaves like it has no battery at all. there could be 2 things leading to that.
1) your battery is completely dead ( check with a voltmeter to confirm)
2) or something wrong with your Connection clips (battery and device) you could again check with a voltmeter whether you get any juice on those clips.

I think that the 1st one is the rigth hypothesis. I'll check with a voltmeter.
The connection clips are ok because the backup battery works perfectly.
To drain that battery I connected an optical usb mouse until the mouse ligth went off. Do you think that this action is the reason of the death?

Cesare, your battery my not complete dead but it is to weak to lighten up your Universal. Said that leads to bad thing which is: you can only start to charge battery when the universal has come out of bootloader mode.
I had such case ones, after not using my device for very long time the battery was completely drained, And as you described the device keep booting after plugging to the power. However after certain time ( I think some 15-30min trying) suddenly I was able to start up. I am not sure whether that would help to overcome the booting mode with less power but you could try to take out your sim card and memory card and try booting. ( again not sure it will help)

Guys - a quick update from my previous post.
I was suffering a sudden power outage at about 75%-85% battery power - just a blank screen - power gone. Didn't happen when mains connected, only on battery.
Well, first things first, I thought...dodgy ROM for WM 6 - so I tried a few of them - Ivans, Ranju's and Beastys - no change - still this power out.
Read the posts on this forum and thought - gotta be the battery's fried.

I ordered a new Genuine JasJar battery and installed it - (let it charge for 8 hours) - since then...no problems - no crashes, stalls or blank outs.
I'm running Ranju's 7.4 with spb pocket plus - htc home, etc,
As a point of interest my old battery stated 3.9Volts when I put my meter across it BUT - a voltmeter isn't drawing as much as the universal - when 'under load' from power intensive apps - hence you think you've got a battery putting out the requisite power when you haven't.
This was a real niggly problem to sort out with potential culprits all over the place:
Bad battery?
Bad ROM?
PCB crack?
Hardware Fault?
At the end of the day it's good to have spent £32 or so and simply got rid of the problem totally.
I'd say to anyone who's getting outs or blank outs at 80% power or below - your battery stuffed and no amount of mucking about with ROM swaps, Freezers, charging/ discharging is going to stop it blanking out on you.
I'd also like to say how appreciative I am of this forum with a great deal of knowledge available from so many users across a very broad spectrum of skills and experience. Nice one!

phone charging problems

hey xda friends,
i have a small problem with my batterie /charger.
it is charging very slowly i am running cm7 so i plug it in very often yesterday at 6 pm it was almost flat so i plugged it in but keep on chatting and surfing/reading so battery wasn't gaining and it kept reading 5% (same as when i plugged it in) i thought well it's just usb so i use a lot of power and it keeps it's level
but when i got to bed (1am ) it let my wallcharger do the task
today when i got up(6am) i looked at my phone and it only read 80% (before i deplugged it) perhaps somebody knows the problem (battery /phone) i have just original parts (charger and battery) i am running cm7 for a while (yesterday i just switched to 2.3.3) never had this problem before....
i tried
power off
power on
pull battery
wipe battery stats
....

Could it be you have something draining the battery heavily?
try a full wipe then reflash

no new installed apps and unplugged it drains normally

Pull the battery, and with the battery out hold the power button for a good 30 sec, on most hardware these days this is how you usually hard reset the power management unit. Try it and lemme know how it goes.
i dunno if this will work for SGS but i guess you have nothing to lose.

I was seeing something like this but not as drastic. Tried a different wall plug and things were better.

i tried it at two spots but with same results on both outlets my desire hd charges nornally
i think it could be the battery
i get a new one on monday i will report

I have a similar problem. My phone also never charge to 100 percent. It reaches to max 85-90 percent and if i continue to charge it starts discharging. If i let it to charge till morning, when i disconnect the charger i read 65-70 percent. I have another battery but not original, it behaves more weird. Dont know if the battery is problem.

I have tested with the wallcharger. It charges to 100 %. And the phone battery drainage is normal. Like 2 days.
Remaining possibilities.
1) Firmware problem. Reflashed the phone with the new firmware. I will see if it changes anything. Not likely though.
2) Hardware problem. The phone's charging usb part damaged and there is some kind of disconnection.
3)May be bootloader got damaged??? Even if the phone closed, it doesn't charge to full capacity.
Edit: The problem seems to be the second one. While flashing with odin it failed many many times. I was just scared that the phone was brick.
Then i realised that the connection with odin is not stable. I press with my finger the the usb charging cable to left and right and I have seen that
the connection comes and goes. After that i have succeeded to flash the phone while pressing to the mini-usb part with my finger. it seems that
that while charging also the connection is not stable so it never fully charges.

Tutorial how to recharge phone when battery is drained!

So we all know the major problem with the WP7 roms.
You can not charge your phone when battery is completely drained!
Now here is the solotion. This requires no apps, no mods. Just your own handeling!
So what to do when battery depletes?
1. Plug your phone into a powersuply.
2. Turn on the phone and keep the power button and both volumes buttons pressed. (this is called a hard reset.)
How to hard reset HD2, view the first 17 seconds. Ignore the VolUp!.
3. You will receive an message saying:
''This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer defailt. Press VolUp to restore manufacture default, or press other keys to cancel.''

4. Do not press anything. Let your phone be for a couple of minutes. I keep my phone laying for a minimum of 10 minutes.
You won't see the phone charging (no orange light in upper left corner)! Believe me it is!
5. After 10 minutes restart the phone. If ''press any other button to cancel'' does not work. Take out the battery, keep battery out for 5 seconds. Restart phone.
6. Phone will start. After windows phone loading screen you will see the phone is charging. If you kept it on power. If not, you didn't follow my instructions.
Tip: to avoid battery drainage!
When the phone is making the bleep noice warning for critical energy level, turn off the phone and keep it at a warm location. Ideal is to take out the battery and keep that to as warm as possible. Batterys barely drain when they are in warm enviorments.
I am not responsible to any damage done to the phone!
I done this multiple times, all times it worked fine for me!

whats not clear is if the battery controler is in use with this method, so be warned, dont leave it too long, if you charge it for no more than an hour it will be ok
mains power adaptors usually give out 1Ah, take in to account that the screen is on full, this should give you around 700mA, more than enough to get in to windows to charge propperly
USB charge will be half that, most USB ports only give out 500mAh so an hour will give you approx 200mA again, thats enough to get you in to windows
Overcharging a battery can have some side effects, firstly is reversed polarity, meaning it wont take as much charge in the future, or it could heat up a lot, which isnt good for anything, the life of battery or the device its self.

That is true, but I recommend trying it for a minimum of 10 minutes keep it on charge. and as soon as windows pop on it recharges normally.
And didnt knew magldr did the job as well, the only problem is if you deplete it to badly it doesnt go past the HTC screen in the beginning.

all this is completely unnecessary.
easy fix solution:
1. Pull the battery out and USB cable out (if connected and charging)
2. Plug the USB into the phone and allow it to charge without a battery (it will not, duh!)
3. Put the battery in while the HD2's connected to the USB charging.
4. Observe that you can boot all the way back into WP7.

Well thank you. Although I am not such a big fan of taking out the battery when its not needed. I mean the change is short circuits with the connecting points when taking out, when powered or putting in when powered it larger. Now I heared from a comment above that MAGLRD does the trick as well. Now that is far more easier then all the others given above, Yours and mine

good tutorial on this. I cant believe the battery wont charge when dead thought this was a faulty error of the phone.

I flash boyppc rom v5 and my battery drained completely and now it doesnt start up I tried both methods available here. Please help.

theres 3 methods on here,
bootloader charge
magldr charge
remove battery charge
all three will benifit frm heating up the battery, do not cook it, or it may blow up
there is a 4th way but i dont recomend it unless nothing else works
take a usb cable mini or usb printer cable
cut off the end connector
strip back the wires and seperate them all, you want the red and black ones
make sure all the wires cant touch each other, cover the 2 unused wires with tape i
then connect the black wire to the (-) negative and the red wire to the (+) positive
tape them in place
the 3rd contact point on the battery isnt used in this method
finally connect the other end of the usb cable to the computer
dont leave it too long and when disconnecting remove the computer end first

I recommend this one.
It bypasses the system somewhat. Don't know what happens when battery is entirely drained, but it is worth a try.
easy fix solution:
1. Pull the battery out and USB cable out (if connected and charging)
2. Plug the USB into the phone and allow it to charge without a battery (it will not, duh!)
3. Put the battery in while the HD2's connected to the USB charging.
4. Observe that you can boot all the way back into WP7.
enjoy.
If it does not help. You can buy a new battery.

Thanks for this timely post Lemonspeakers. completely drained the battery listening to music on loudspeaker and didnt hear any warning. Couldn't hard reset then checked this thread.
On putting in the battery after charging the empty phone, the screen kept cycling between mgldr and HTC splashscreen so booted into sd android and the phone is fine.
I assume I didnt charge the empty phone for long enough (30 secs), I didnt warm the battery and I suppose I could have left it cycling until it charged up a bit more.

i tried but my phone doesnt start even then. my friend said it might be a kernel. i wanna flash stock but i dont know how because my phone isnt starting
my hd2 is a tmous. the 1024 one

your phone was not starting either? like it was black even though you pressed hard reset? how long do i leave it the empty phone to charge??

I left the phone without the battery and left it plugged in for 2 hrs and still no luck.

Have you tried warming the battery? Hairdryer warm
Dont know if you have mgldr so maybe try the hard reset option

That might work.
Otherwise maybe a phone repair shop, there is equipment that can charge your battery outside an phone. An emergency charger its called if I am not mistaken.
you could inform there.

its showing symtoms of it bring bricked. cause it doesnt charge, it doesnt turn on without the battery, and yeah conclusion is that its dead!
