XDA III (3)

now that I've had the XDA II for a week...
what/when will the XDA III come out?
I'm pretty sure it will have:
1. faster CPU
2. more memory
3. WiFi
4. better screen (probably VGA resolution)
I hope it also have:
1.. GPS
2. WiFi
3. longer / bigger / optional battery
4. better camera
5. better software e.g. camera, pic id, ie, backup, ...
6. usable as a wireless in-house phone via bluetooth
What else do you guys expect?

Ummm,,, I think you are getting a bit ahead of yourself. It isnt even out yey (XDAII) in most parts of the world. I mean, you might as well ask when is the XDAIV or XDAV coming out? Im sure all of your speculations will be addressed in some time to come.....

not to mention that iPaq is planning to release a whole new ppc rumored to be with even more capabilities than the xda2. heard about it while attending a techie conference in hong kong...they're planning to use the iPaq 5550 (the one with bluetooth, fingerprint bio-thingee, etc) as the base model. from there they're going to add a high res camera, phone edition, possibly gps, etc. so it may give xda a run for it's money as they try to overtake one another in terms of capabilities. that's the sad part about releasing your product ahead of the pack; it becomes the basis for releasing an improved product by reverse engineering. in any case, it'll be most interesting to see how the next generation ppcs will look like and how they will perform.

I heard it's based on the 4xxx form factor (aka no more sleeves..ever).
And it will only have 64 MB of RAM.
Haha yeah right, the MDA II was rumored at one point to only have 64 MB of RAM, but it didn't come out with that. Gotta keep in mind, stuff is only rumors. Don't keep waiting around for that perfect device.
I'm happy with my XDA II for now, and if the H6000 comes out six months from now and is way better, well, then I got 6 months good use out of my XDA II, and I can decide then if I want to upgrade.
Those people saying "I'll hold off on the XDA II and wait for the H6000 cause I've heard it's so good, etc. etc." seem silly to me, because when the H6000 comes out, something else bigger (or smaller in the PDA world, lol) and better will be rumoredm and they'll be saying "I'll hold off on the H6000 and wait for the ______ because it's so good, etc. etc."

if you think about for how long from the xda were released to the xda2 got here i say it's pretty hard to say what it will offer
it's hard to predict more so about the furture
maybe it'll have
wireless glasses / eye pad screen
maybe it'll have ESP interface
maybe it'll connect directly to satelites
maybe it'll give you a brain turmor after a few hours use

Maybe you can add "TV Tuner" and "CF Slot" in your list...

I reckon it will be 3g compatible.

3G, CF, TV
TV/FM tuner will be nice. Samsung already came out with something
like this in the far east, I think.
I'd guess the XDA III "information" will be here in 9-10 months,
and by then a CF card will be useless, especialyl if we get WiFi+GPS
builtin and standard 1Gb SD cards.
If you guys think that HTC engineers aren't already working on
the XDA III, you're very wrong.
I think 3G is unlikely to show up on a global form anytime soon.
Adding WiFi and/or GPS receiver to already GSM/Bluetooth signals
is going to be hard enough, electorically (shielding), so 3G might
be 2-3 years away.
Hopefully, with WM2004, we'll have more than 32 processes and
better overall device management. Right now, I'm forced to
soft-reset every 2-3 days, and I don't like that.

Man, I soft reset every few hours. What's the big deal? It boots up as fast as it would load a webpage, so the wait isn't that bad.
Why do people complain about soft resetting? I just like that I get to choose when to soft reset (i.e. after saving all work, closing all apps, etc.), rather than it locking up and forcing a soft reset. The XDA II is a stable device, to be sure.

regarding soft reset
he he. Maybe I should soft-reset every now and then.
My problem is, I've had ie+multie+battery2004 create some lockup
that soft-reset didn't really cleanup.
I suspect I pressed the mult-ie func-menu while a page was loading
and something more was going on... anyway:
I had to Hard-reset.
I restored my xBackup from my SD (night before, device was soft
reset and no active apps while running)
and guess what, after the restore the device won't reboot.
tried it twice. had to go back to activesync backup... yak.
I've had multiple times where I had to soft-reset while an app was
active, but the menu has gone "dead"... I turn the device off,
then press reset, as if "when it is sleepy" a soft reset is "safer".
I'm pretty sure this is just vodoo... but it works for me.
Now everytime I soft-reset I wonder if I ever going to see it reload...

well since a 3g phone works on the current gsm networks aswell
same thing with edge i dont find it all that unlikely that xda3 may support some of these new tech's
guess in many ways it also depend on ms's view on edge and 3g and video phone issues

hhmmm are you sure that you just dident forget to take off your bluetooth ear piece ? sleeping with it on may cause an uncomfortable ache

my exp show that things which fold end up as
1 worn out so it'll not stay in any pos
2 the plastic breaks (happent 2 times with crap acer laptops for me)
so it's better to project the image then fold it out

WM2003 specs say 240x320. No more, no less !
Maybe next version of OS will allow other rezs, but for now it will remain 240x320.

1. it is official that wm2004 will support higher resolutions
2. 3rd party software already does, for PDFs, IE etc
3. a Toshiba pocketPC already avail with VGA res,
and it is typically run the 4-pixel-is-one thing, but has
exceptions for some software (pictures?!)
VGA-resolution ppc-size screen is already here!

I personally will not be happy until my PDA is a tiny, rounded stainless steel implant with a small cable that inductively couples to my optic nerves, a pickup coil for the charger mat that is under my bed-sheets, another tiny cable to hook to my inner ears for mike and earpiece, and some pickup electrodes to be fitted near certain regions in the brain.
Man, I can just see myself sitting there, enjoying the 4800x2400 stereo overlayed display, simply thinking my E-mails. And of course the device would use the same inductive optic-nerve pickup as a camera, and it would have enough processing power to replace people and objects I do not like in real-time, add nice works of art on otherwise boring surfaces, and add up all visual information about certain people until they can be renedered without their clothes on. Just think of the money saved on home decoration and travel.

Jasjar II wish list (maybe they'll hear this time)

New owners, what would you guys like to se on the next generation Jasjar (maybe in six month or a year from now)?
I am not tallking about the OS (thas MS part and can be rectified with updates), I mean hardware wise.
On my part:
1.) Built in FM reciever would be nice. (if the technolory is there, then why not?
2.) At least 512Mb built in mem (making it ~$20-35 more expensive, still I belive everyone that bougth it now would still do so). This in not a serious issue.
3.) Edge
4.) Full handsfree profile support (maybe this is more with software, you tell me)
5.) External LCD display for: caller id (I belive this is critical), battery level, network strenght, etc. even if its just monochrome it would be a great help.
6.) Wlan 80.11g an obvious plus
7.) I could live with 1-2cm wider but have a psion/notebook type keyboard...
...
P.S: to be correct (persay) only things that you wouldn't mind paying a little extra for, if it was included...

How about having Navigation like Mouse which we have in Nokia Communicators... which will save the time of pulling stylus and using it one hand while we hold the device in other hand.

I agree, that would realy help things like scrolling, which right now can only be done with stylus.

What I want the most is built in GPS. It's a pest having to charge up an external unit and remembering to bring all the right car adapters etc. so a built in unit would be awesome.
It would also be nice to see some of the new thin and flexible OLED type displays added which would reduce power consumption and make the displays less likely to break when dropped.
I'd also like to have a little hole on the corner of the device! I know it's not very techie, but I'd like some way of attaching a chain or cord to my device which attaches to my belt, so that if (or when!) you drop your device it wont hit the ground!

On the graphics front, I'd like hardware acceleration of H.264 encoded videos (the format that's going to replace MPEG-2, MPEG-4 etc.). It would be nice if the built in camera could save in this format as well, because it would be a big space saver.
As for batteries, I wish they'd hurry up and release some of the new technology they've been talking about for years - better battery life, super fast charge times etc.
Well, you might think the Universal is the ultimate device, but there's so much more to add before I'll be happy!

I really wish the following 4 most wanted and easily possible features add to JasJar. I am definitely waiting for successor of Jasjarl with follwoing and currently I'm happy with my XDAII. Current Jasjar is useless compare to my XDAII since there are only few programs works and still so many bugs/requirements in both hardware and OS.
1. FM Radio
2. 640x480 video recording with 2 or more MegaPixel Camera
3. Full Handsfree bluetooth audio(MP3 listening)
4. 800x480 screen for internet browsing.(a little longer 4.5" screen is acceptable like samsung Nexio XP30,Nokia 770).
Some other wish list
1.Video Output(RCA/S-Video/VGA)
2.Videos from Camera can transmit through wifi
3.USB hosting
4.mobile TV(DVB-H) receiver

It's interesting to revisit this thread nearly two years later as HTC release the Touch Pro that includes almost all the functionality you guys listed above. Perhaps HTC were listening after all.

Athena or Ameo - first few days.

Hi, Great forum people, at least you get the chance to write up your thoughts.
My first Post on this site, and my initail thoughts.
I got an Ameo as an upgrade to my "MDA PRO" from T-Mobile. It looks like a UMPC but not quite there. I second all your thoughts on the device. One thing that is "interesting is the motion sensor" i.e. you can move around the web browsers via tilting the machine, but a bit like my PS3 Motion Sensor Games it gets a bit of getting use to so I tend not to use it.
Another useful thing above the MDA was the little 5 way joypad which is useful if you don't feel pulling out the pen. But this is definitely a Two Hands Device.
I always try and get the most techie gadget from my Tmobile as possible, the odd view I know but I dont actually believe this is a useable phone, so I still use my trusty SONYp900 with rubbish battery.
Although I must admit the MDA pro battery is pretty bad, that I upgraded to a larger and thus more bulkier model.
So Far I have been impressed with the Ameo's battery - life and as others have commented that the usb charging takes longer from Laptop/PC than the official adapter included. But alas I think after using it it will only really last a day at most … so I have to carry a charger with me if at work etc.
One thing I am confused about is that T-Mobile - I never had any Composite out / S-VHS output cable - just a VGA cable, not sure if this is standard or misinformation I did however had VGA out - it would have been nice to show family pics when travelling etc on family TV's at times.
For me this is exactly as you said a Filofax that BT headset would be useful for making calls. I use it to do exactly "work" related diarycalendar and massive contact list, and keep documents hat I am working on within for reference, must get a Blue Tooth keyboard that sounds useful.
Use the MDA PRO keypad was actually quite tactile and useable, this Ameo however is a very ZX80 "showing my age". but that being said I did edit my CV quite easily.
I would like to say when I saw the screen size I was impressed but the resolution is a let down, I think its more to do with WM5 rather than the device I presume but not sure of the Technical on this.
This machine is just screaming to be a LINUX machine with Phone and GPS built in, open office and more etc, utilising the screen size to a better effect. Dunno just a thought.
WM5 is not really eye candy in pink, so this is a let down, if not embarrassing, some peopel out there would slap you if you answered the Ameo in public so BT is useful and Hands free a necessity.
It "could" make a useful recorder for meetings. Also useful that it has a 3MP Camera, I took some shots and all were useful, but the device is slow and tedious and simple camera's are better Although it has stretched the boundaries i.e PDA/Phone etc. (noting the Nokia N95)
One thing is that it requires you to have a very steady hand or need to be leaning against something to take a top quality shot that again needs to be Still, I got tried of asking my 3 year old lad to hold still ;-) and did not even try with my fast crawling 9 month baby boy.
My wife thinks its yet another waste of money, but I explained to her that I never actually bought it, and it allowed me not to have to carry a laptop and the Work PC and this would be sufficient. So If you are after saving your back then great.
I am now actually on the look out for a really simple phone which can sync with outlook and preferably pay as you go.
So - now I don’t have to carry my ipod - music, Sony PSP for MP4, Laptop - general work. If I look at it that way all well and good. It does feel a bit odd that one I do pull it out it feels like the daddy of PDAs or an ARCHOS Media Player. Pity that the Linux thought that the USB sync cable could connect it to a further Hard drive? making it a TV recorder? Dreaming now sorry.
I hear HTC have a 7inch Vista Compatible. I think that Microsoft/HTC need to release WM6 on the AMEO with T-Mobile quickly.
Anyone know how to get rid of the T-Mobile customisation I remember that there use to be hack for the MDA PRO.
Also NO Anti Virus - or is it that I have not even opened or read Manual the CD-ROM may contain it? can someone confirm as I have to hide everything from the kids otherwise it becomes pulp in there mouths.
So far my littles ones have some great hand me downs, whilst I try and justify the Apple TV thing that just came through a month or so late ;-) belated Valentines Gift for my wife ;-), Pity I could not get this thing engraved with my wifes name on it, usually helps with the unwrapping.
Oh boy before I forget, I thought it was just me, but the screen is useless outside. it reflects so much that you cannot see anything outside. this is really annoying try to use the GPS. so the Voice and sound need to be loud. Notably I did have the screen protector supplied stuck on the Ameo. One thing it makes it more UNsensitive i.e. need to prod it firmly when utilising one finger and not the pointer, which surprisingly does stay in it hole, and does not fall out when there is a breeze in the air.
Another good thing is that streaming books is great for the Kids. The Speakers (stereo work well) althought they are very spoilt with Beolabs 8000 and 6000's around the house, amazingly they don't touch those.
With all the usb charges cables about the place and prying childrens hands I am a bit wary of the thing being pulled of table.
The leather case is really good quality leather, and I think although I like to keep everything quite new looking it may look even better with age.
BUT the protection it offers is minimal, i.e. its no ipod rubber skin etc, and the Ameo is no Light Bunny. If it was picked up I in a food fight accidentally then this would hurt ;-). Where am I going with this is that Hard Drive, and I have worked within IBM Engineering Manufacturing “Files/DASD or Hard Drives”. Can it take a bump is going to be found out by my toddlers sooner than later and this scares me a tad, Solid State could not arrive quick enough albeit for in flight parking technologies. Come on Samsung bring those prices down for that 64GB device.
That Magnetic Keyboard is definitely a Trick and credit to HTC nice idea and shows the shielding has been well thought out it reminds me of the shielding in Larger drives and Actuator Arms. One thing I would have like was another case which just allowed the Ameo to be used Palm Like.and a carrying strap should had least been an option, as long as it was not as girly as the PSP one.
Thinking Back PSION and HP and Ericson Pocket PC etc, this is that Nokia Communicator type machine. It nearly all there but not just quite.
Yes I will get an I-Phone engraved for my wife of course,. As I got this on a twelve month Contract. It does allow me to surf the web adequately but jave based websites still struggle with WM5. this is annoying if you use BT Yahoo, and even there non java based site there is issues with some very important icons.
Skype –usage with T-Mobile costs extra on top of web-n-walk so bear that in mind. This is a bit of a farce. But it would be ideal for Skype etc. If any hackers out there sort this out I will be impressed, I suppose T-Mobile monitor the Skpe services PORT?
One other thing I maybe correct about is there is no infra red port, as this would have made the best ever remote control. Although I do have an amazing B&O 7000 and beolink 5000 and standard beolink which all have immensely powerful beams. It would have been nice to add to my collection one that I could programme the non B&O kit with.
Hmmmm could add it to the Kitchen that I am thinking of doing up, drop down timer, internet cookbook, bollywood film streamer ;-) I think my wife may allow for it.
Anyways hope this adds to some of the thoughts others have written.
Speed of use and generally moving about I not totally impressed about although I am use to trading floor compute back bones, you can live with it. Thing that annoys me is the start up time to making a phone call quickly if you had to. One of the reasons for not using it as phone apart from looking like a person ready to be mugged.NFL.

I'm still with my Dopod 900/Universal, and thinking of upgrading to U1000 due to the speed, battery life, and bigger screen.
I find that my dopod 900 memory often drops below 10mb and this slows down the speed significantly. I do hope with U1000, the speed would improve tremendously. The Dopod 900 Battery life was not enough to keep me up for a whole day either. I do a lot of readings and typings with my PDA on the road, so bigger screen would be a bonus.
Although, U1000 seems heavier and bigger on spec paper, but I find that in my pant's pocket(Hugo Boss Dress pants) I find U1000 to be more comfortable, perhaps due to its thinner design?
The Dopod 900 is a bit thick and pressing against my thigh. So for some reason dopod 900 is less comfortable for me.

Well, I use 900 before and now with u1000..
Honestly, dont sell ur 900 for the u1000..
I have it both now..
900 have something really good as an alternative..
lighter, an all in one keyboard, a backlight keyboard, a 4 rows keyboard.
For me, both of them have similar battery life.... Both good. u1000 a bit longer if the light set lower (but 20% light is higher than the 900 already)
I use 900 for 1.5 yrs, it is great and still the best in any PDA phone.
Get u1000 for a new fresh good, wider screen, more bright screen, faster speed, GPS, HSDPA. It for sure worth!!!

yes i also agree the keyboard isn't that good in Athena, but hey don't forget, there is a possibility that we can buy extra keyboard that is better then Universal to attach to out Athena in the future.

My Ameo - unlock cost me £15 on T-Mobile
OK ... still playing with My Ameo.
Updates ... I have a Tom Tom 6 installed. - Will report back GPS capabilities soon.
WMStorage - worked 2nd time around but cannot get it working anymore. cant connect to usb driver error etc. Tried the threads but to no avail. - it maybe a TT6 thing.
Noted that after TT6 install the abilitiy to open media player files have become messed up on the web, it like it does not recognise them and I have to "save as" only - anyone know how to solve or experince this?
Not sure if some file associations have gone AWOL.
Definately still too big to Talk into, screen useless still in the SUN, waiting for the right type of sunshine ;-), Probably a good thing that you cannot use it outside when people can see you! ;-). Actualy I have started to use my mda pro a bit more and it actually feels usuable and small and a breath of fresh air scarily I might even use it as a phone now.
Installed ozVGA, amkes its a supperb document viewer - although cannot use the phone pad, but hey I am not making any calls ;-)
Biggest update - I thought I would like to use it as an emergency phone. without having to pull out my SIM card from other phone all the time. Noting I use Wifi most of the time. I thus phoned T-Mobile - got into chatting how I wold like to use the newly bought device abroad for a Month and if I could have it unlocked, the representative said £15 on the next bill, I said darn oh well, plaease put it on my next bill, and proceeded to give the IMEI number over the phone, she said that it would take 28 Days, to deliver to my home address. I said could it be meailed - she said yes, but it still takes 28 days ... checkig and procedures I guess... but I went for the email option hoping it maybe quicker, plus I can chase them without getting into postal issues.
But this now gives me a unlocked phone, pending them saying I should not have been given the ability to have it etc.... I am on flext25 webnwalk (12 month Contaract) but have been with them since the begining. Hopefuly giving me enough time to see iphone in the UK for next purchase.

About to go down to phones4u and pick up a Motofone for £15, thin and simple.
Noted one really annoying thing, by the vue flow, there is a scratch apperaing from closing the case i.e. the plastic form teh keyboard contacts rubs direct against teh edge of the screen metal, and this is casuing me concern, it could easily dent it. I like to keep everythign like new, plastic, I dont even throw ties away ;-) so this is going to be annoying. its like gettinga dent on the Ferrari after just buying it, touching the screen of the of Bang and Olufsen Beovision 5 or worse a hole within the fret ;-).

Haret is "HArdware Reverse Engineering Tool". It's a wince program
with the source code available under GPL,
and you can get the latest precompiled version here

The program allows a very detailed research in an interactive mode,
but first i'm interested in the most simple things.
Please put this program in some directory, and create a file named
"default.txt" containing a line
Code:
dump gpio athenagpio
in the same directory.
Start the program and press the "Run" button.
Exit.
You should see the file "athenagpio" in the same directory.
Please upload it here.

Cool Dumping settings from a working machine is often
much more helpful than any static analysis.
I'm already editing the wiki based on your data.
Can you connect to the machine with telnet to port 9999,
and do you know how to log the session ?
We need to find out your board ID (if you don't know it already from the bootloader) and it is possible to dump a lot of other useful info.

Please give me the details and I wil try, I am currently away from my pc, but in essence is this correct :
[1] get the bootloader details (quick link please)
[2] Connect to the "home" wifi network.
[3] Work out the ip address on the Ameo
[4] telnet form PC on Wifi network to the Ameo ip Address
e.g.
[4.1] open command window or cmd on Home PC
[4.2] telnet 192.168.0.xxx [space] 9999
After which i suspect I am connected to something running on that 9999 port?
please let me know if that is roughly what you are after and then I can assist.

You are connected to haret (remote debugger, if you like) and can run debugging commands.
BTW, it can be deduced from your dump that the phone and wifi are
switched off. Can you switch them on (maybe the GPS too) and
do the gpiodump again ?

there isn't one yet, all i am saying is there is a possibility that we will see third party keyboard that we can attach and replace the original one, it might have some more features such as extra row. Personally, i think it isn't that hard to achieve.

Tips for buying a used universal

Hello! could people please share tips and things to remember when buying a used universal? I mean what are the things that you should do to check or find tell tale signs of defect, hardware, the firmware the os, I have already done a search in the forums and already know some, but there might be things that I have missed, so help would be very nice, I will be meeting the seller so I get to inspect the device up close so it would be nice to armed with the info how to inspect the device from how to check the bootload etc.

The Universal can be bought cheap at german eBay. Look for MDA PRO. You should be able to purchase one for around or less than 100 Euro.
Preferably look for the following signs:
1) Unmodded. Many users got the Universal within a contract from the operator, but did not use it much, because it is too big for them. Such Universals are normally in good condition. When advertised that it ships with an OS different than WM5, you know that the owner has been flashing it. I personally don't like that, because that means it belonged to a power user and must be more worn out.
2) Warranty stickers. Make sure the hinges have the warranty stickers inside. If they are missing, the device has been opened. You don't want to purchase one that has been opened.
3) Screen. Screen should be without scratches and should have had always a screen protector.
4) Speaker. The external speaker which is used for calls can break, as it is fitted with some kind of pogo pins. Make sure it is working.
If you get to test the device first, do as this:
- do a call (bring your SIM card)
- check WLAN and Bluetooth (bring a headphone and try it somewhere with WLAN activity)
- bring a SD card and see if it is read
- check for bad pixels
- play a song
- take a picture
- try the keyboard and touch screen
- try all the buttons
If everything works, that is the best you can check it for.
Of course it could break the next day, but it shouldn't.

I´ll just add:
Take special care on the swivel piece (The one that gives Uni it´s great and unbeatable form factor: PDA - Micro Lap top)

take care of another thing when i bouted my universal after i used it for about 1 week the phone was hangs soo much the reason was in the memory crd .....so you must try a memory crd and play a small video on it about 10 minutes

The most important thing everyone forgot to mention is USB port. When looking for a device, see if the port moves in any way or wiggles in its opening. See if the device synchronises with AS, charges etc.
The fact the device had been flashed or opened wouldn't play a huge part for me if everything else works well and the body is in sound condition, e.g. the hinge is not loose, the screen rotates and closes properly, all keys are present and work, keyboard backlight works with and without sensor etc.
Speakers don't just break, as post No2 claims (POGO PINS??), but it is good to check that phone is capable of making/receiving calls, you can hear the other party and the other party can hear you, can play music and earphone plug is in working condition/attached properly
Not reading SD or SIM card is a biggie, dim screen, lost touch sensitivity, scratched or damaged digitizer, worn out buttons - all obvious signs. You can open the back, remove the battery and SIM card and check for a small white blotting paper sticker covering the small mainboard pins under the SIM card, any change in color towards pink - do not buy.

After a few months the contact gets worse and worse until one of both plates brake off. Because they are so tiny, it is impossible to repair the speaker - believe me, I have tried. I ended up buying a new speaker cell at eBay.

And believe me, I repair devices for a living. Thanks for the run-through, although I could give you the same. It happened to you, doesn't mean it happens often or it is a fault in design. I could give you a list of design faults in quite a few models of expensive cellphones on the market today, the mentioned speakers are not one of them.

Battery can be also considered. Some are sold with good batery some with dead battery. It is not so expensive, but costs something. In general if battery shows less than 50% and devidce still works (even under load) that is a good sign.
Also as for the touch screen - the best test is to open note taker and try to paint something. The painted line must exactly follow the stylus movement if it jumps somewhere, then the touch sensitive layer is bad. I bouht such UNI on eBay (was described as perfect working order), had to replace the digitizer myself.
I do prefer buying not working UNI's on Ebay with good display. Once I bought not booting one - mtty job fixed that. Other time I bouht one where the display was still off - the flex cable popped out from connector. Etc....

Phew, My Shift is Back to Life: Thank God !

After frying my Shift motherboard sometimes last year I had given up any hope of ever getting it to work again. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701950 ). I tried HTC support to have the motherboard repaired or even to be supplied with a new motherboard without any success. Tried any relevant outlet I could think of that could source a motherboard but still nothing came of it.
I tried searching for anyone selling a Shift at the cheap but the few ebay listings I came across showed that the device cost is still very high. I started a link here hoping somebody with a dead Shift could sell it to me for spares but nothing came of it. To make matters worse the thread was moved to Xda Marketplace and it was lost and burried in the market. ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=937322&highlight=shift+motherboard )
But as fate would have it the other day I searched the Marketplace and came across a guy who was selling 2 dead Shifts and high capacity Shift accesories and spares including 2 Gb Ram stick, SSD and higher capacity batteries. But I was a bit late to the party! The sale had been on for almost 2 months and most of the valuable items had already been sold. But I was still in luck as the dead Shifts were still available. I bought one of them as the other was a complete shell even though the motherboards had problem as the power switches had detached and gotten lost for the both of them.
Fortunately an electrical engineer friend of mine was able to remove the power switch from my dead Shift and solder it to the purchased motherboard. It was a delicate procedure but I can confirm that all went well and my Shift is now back to life. Infact even with the replacement motherboard my Shift booted with all the data and settings exactly the way it was before roasting the motherboard.
Just thought of sharing my experience with fellow proud Shift owners here.

While having the spare Shift and old motherboard at the hand, would you please be so kind to have a look at the circuitry of the socket for external headphones&microphone. My interest is related to the non-working condition of the Shift phone on external headphones&microphone with the custom ROMs.
Therefore could you please check if the socket is simply switching mechanically between internal speakers and external headphones, respectively internal microphone and external microphone (just like in any other audio-tape device) or other circuitry is also involved invalidating the phone function when external devices connected. What else gets disconnected when plugging-in that is influencing the phone? Can the microphone switch be overridden to use only the internal one permanently and let only the headphones be switched?
I'm pretty sure that there are many members here interested in your answers to the above questions. So thank you for contributing to this community!

Ok I will check the switching mechanism for the mic+headphones for the Shift and report back. If relevant I will also take close-up photos with both the the jack plugged in and plugged out. Since I have the extra motherboards boards (both winmo and Vista) I will try severall things. But if i am not wrong the headphone jack is actually attached to the windows mobile motherboard and not the windows vista motherboard....
I will do the necessary and report back. Of course I am also very much interested in finding a solution for the century old problem of non-working external mic phone side..... I will also snoop around the Memory Card Reader and see what gives ......

My idea is that we all might get lucky if the phone would work on external headphones (i.e. have some privacy), but with the internal microphone (you have to speak-up loud anyway).
I expect that, just like in any classical audio set, the switching circuitry on the audio out side gets the signal out of an audio stereo IC, which is led further to the ext phones socket and involves nothing more than the connection wires, socket, loudspeakers and earphones. If so, that means that we are OK on the earphones side. Of course this is an assumption and means that there are no active speakers or anything of the kind linking the audio outputy to any input of the mciroprocessor.
I also looked at 4 contacts 3.15mm coax plug of the HTC earphones and microphone and the contacts for the limitation comes from the microphone circuitry, this can be arranged by disconnecting the internal microphone from the ext socket and leaving it connected all the time.
My guess is that the internal microphone is hardwired directly to the socket and is not going trough the motherboard PCB (printed circuit board), in which case can be desoldered from the socket and resoldered to the audio in signal path (also coming from the socket). With this mod inserting the plug will have no influence any more on the microphone path.
In reality things can be more complicated since the same ext socket is serving both WinMob side and Vista side. I wonder if there is a single audio out IC or just the two processors deliver in paralel to the same load (speakers).
Looking forward to your findings.

I had a long and hard look at the mic and audio jack/port and I am afraid there is nothing much to gain from a physical examinations of those items. To start with the audio port is covered with a black plastic on the outside so you cant really see what is going on inside when you insert the jack.
The audio port is connected to the phone mobo and not the Vista mobo. The phone motherboard is not spoilt and hence I would not want to strip things from it as it can come in handy at a future date. The internal mic is also attached to the phone motherboard through a printed cable. Problem is without first booting the Vista Bios the phone side does also not boot. I am trying to see if there is a way I might get the phone side to boot. If I can succeed that way I would then disconnect the mic from the phone motherboard and see whether the wired mic can become active as you have suggested.
But all this I am only doing with the dead Shift because of course I cant touch the recently resurrected Shift. I wonder if there is absolutely any way of being able to boot the winmo side without first pressing the power button (attached to Vista mobo) which is missing from the motherboard that I am playing with??? If that was to be possible I could try various things with the mobile powered on and probably even be able to use the mobile side ad forget about Vista on the cannibalized Shift?
Here are some photos of the audio jack port and the mic connection area. Sorry the images are not great as i took them at night and in low light environment.... These are self-explanatory but the long and short of it as per your inquiry is that it is possible to disconnect the internal mic from the motherboard. As to how the wired mic would behave when the internal mic is disconnected is subject to real tests with a working Shift. As to whether you can solder these around I will leave that to those of us who are more technically oriented.......

I'd read your post. Also, I have som problem about my Shift
the conditions are:
1. it can not be turn on even vista or snapvue
2. When I switch on the power button, only the green light was on at the bottom of LCD screen.
3. I can hear the fan turn on but nothing happened
4. When I use the charger, the battery can be charged and finished it.
Do you think that the mother board have something wrong?
The HTC care center want me to change the board but it cost a lots.

If the green light is turning on I think yours is a software problem. What about the mobile side? Does it come on when you press the button for switching between the Snapvue and Vista? Try that with the green light on and then we can try troubleshooting from there.....
In the meantime try press FN+F10 immediately the green light comes on and see what happens.....

Hi Ed, thank you very much for your endeavour. Of course I didn't expect to work in this experiment with the ressurected Shift, but only with the spare one.
What kind of a switch is the power switch, is it a single section switch or with multiple sections, is it a bistable or a tip-switch. I expect that it is a single section tip switch which is connecting 2 contacts on the pcb only for a short while while you press on it. If this is correct you may connect the 2 contacts with a jumper-wire just to start-up the Shift. It is true that the Vista part will start first, but I don't see a big draw back in that.

Thanks again for the pictures, maybe some other time you'll have the opportunity to come up with more clear ones.
To get some privacy while using the phone my intention was to switch only the speakers on the headphones, but still using the internal microphone of the Shift. That would require some small modifications to the jack-port.
I didn't get it exactly how many motherboards are there inside the Shift? Are there in 3 pcs, i.e. Vista mb, Winmo mb and phone mb, is that right?

The Shift has 2 motherboards - Mobile and Windows Vista. But both are connected where the 2 boards get into contact with each other through connectors on each side. There are no cables/wires involved but just direct connectors between the 2 motherboards where they come into contact with each other.
Apparently most of the connections take place inside the printed circuit boards so you cant tell which connection goes where. But of interest is that both the mic and the audio jack are all connected to the phone motherboard yet they dont work in the mobile side. So either these have been physically disconnected within the circuit board or it could be a software issue. Remember how we could not use GPS or phone functions until the great rom breakthrough by the likes of Thaihugo and Cmonex....? I still believe that the issue of wired mic not being active is a software issue.
But the SD Card is a different story as this is attached to the Vista motherboard. It is very likely that there is no physical connection between the Sd card and the mobile motherboard. Well I might be entirely wrong here as come to think of it there is a solution about accessing SD card from the windows side but Vista has to be on...... Will look for that thread and read some more and see how the connection is established.
By the way I did home-made switch for the dead shift's motherboard. The Shift was able to power up and boot but it appears that the Lcd cable is dead (or perhaps the lcd screen itself is dead but most likely the problem is with the cable). I was able to connect the Shift to the Tv through a Vga cable. But I could not do much with it as the Vista software appears to be corrupt. Further the HDD connection cable too is not in very good shape. I hope to get the Hdd cable to be able to do more tests on this Shift using the Tv as the external monitor.
This other Shift will be the official guinea pig and I am willing to make various tests with it as soon as I get a working Hdd cable and re-install windows. However there is a big limitation to this too because apparently the windows mobile side does not show in the external monitor. In other words even if you switch to the mobile side using the Shift button the external screen does not change and is only active for Vista......
But I can tell the snapvue side is active as I was able to call the sim card number inside the Shift I was using for tests.... My intention is simply to use this Shift with my Tv for internet connection and as a basic pc in the living room. I confirmed that the internet connection to the Vista side is active even without having any access to the windows mobile screen. I made these tests with the Hdd cable from my good Shift for a few minutes and thus did not make extensive tests.
So guys I will get back to you with more tests once I get a working Hdd cable which I may have to import from China (parts4repair.com). I might then end up with 1 Shift and half a Shift......

After playing with my other Shift as described above I believe your problem is not the motherboard since the power light is coming on and the fan is coming on when you power your device. So chances are that your Lcd screen is not getting any signal from your Shift. Yours could be a simple problem with a disconnected Lcd flex cable or problems with the lcd screen or damaged lcd flex cable. Easiest test for you is to get Vga cable and test your Shift using an external computer monitor or tv that supports Vga in cable..... Hope this helps.
