ringtones:
what i always do is next: i download a cool mp3 song on my pc.
connect your mobile with your pc make sure you have activesync installed.
upload the song to a place on your mobile with file explorer. doesnt matter where you put it.
and then in the file explorer on your mobile you press and hold the song you want and wait for the menu that says: use as ringtone or something like that..
for real ringtones... donno... google?
sms/alarm sounds:
make sure you have a .wav file
*i noticed that it has a maximum sizelimit... dont know how much exacly but if its too big you cannot select it from the small menu on your phone.
connect your mobile with your pc make sure you have activesync installed.
then with file explorer goto the windows folder on your mobile and paste the .wav file in here and now you can select the sounds from the menu.

I use WavePad to crop and amplify the parts of songs I have on CD that I want to use for ringtones. I wouldn't keep more than 25-30 seconds of the song as a ringtone - more than that can screw up the voicemail intercept. Instructions below:
Crop a 25-30 second piece of the song
Select All, and then go to EFFECTS->Normalize, and set that to 80%
Select All, and then goto EFFECTS->High Pass Filter. Set the Frequency (hZ) to 160. This will play back your file, and remove the bass which would normally distort and cause ringer speaker blowouts on the phone.
Fade In/Out the ends
Amplify (twice - 400, then 200)
Save As, bitrate to 8khz 16 bit mono.
"Save File As ..." WAV, PCM, 8,000 16 bit mono 15kb/sec
My usual ringtone is "Uncle John's Band" (Grateful Dead) but I switch to "Down at the Twist and Shout" (Mary Chapin Carpenter) when I go to New Orleans and "Wasted on the Way" when I'm in the mood for some CSN. More than you wanted to know but just shows the possibilities. Good luck.

ringtone always goes to windows default, does not change wm5

I select a ringtone I used to have for my i-mate and now i loaded it for the jasjar, I select 'Set as Ringtone' it gives me the message that it has been copied and set....BUT if i go into the phone or if I call the ringtone selected is the Windows Default.....
any ideas?
Is it a MP3 ringtone? If so, if MP3s are associated with a program other than Window Media Player than this will happen.
I have Pocket Music on mine and I had to unassociated .mp3 with this program and now the ringtone stays set all the time.
I had the same problem on my pda2k wm5, finally to solve it i changed manually the registry where ringtone are written.
If you want to try, you need a registry editor, then go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\RingTone0\
Under RingTone0 you have the key "Sound" that is your actual ringtone and the key "SavedSound" that is still your ringtone (it's needed when you go to radio off to remember your ringtone).
Check this 2 keys and if are not your ringtone, write it manually: \windows\rings\xxx.wav

How do I add ring tones?

Hi
I have some .wav files on my SD card which I used to use as rng tones on my old pDA2K.
I cannot remember how to make this happen as none of them appear as options on the K-JAM?
Cheers.
Robin
Copy them into the Windows / Rings folder, and then you should be able to select them from the phone / menu / options
Or in the registries you can change the path where the setting app looks for the ring tones:
Code:
HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring\Directory

How about if they are on my SD card?
I don't see a Windows/ Rings folder there.
Robin
Putting Ringtones on SD card wil slow reaction and may affect phone to
use default ring unstead of one of your choice
Seems to work fine from my MiniSD card, without any noticeable delay. I entered
Code:
\Storage Card\MP3
as directory. The weird thing is that (in the phone sound settings panel) it doesn't list playable files in that single directory, but files from the entire device (including the storage card). I suspect it can't handle the path I entered, so it does a recursive search from the top file namespace of the device (hence the list of all playable files). But that's just speculation
Will the Wizard play .mp3 files as ring tones or do they have to be .wav files?
Robin
Hm...I named the directory MP3.... Let me just ponder what kind of files I dropped in there
It doesn't seem to like ALL flavours of MP3. VBR is one of them. And it's quite difficult to restore the original setting: the sound control panel is still unable to find the original ringtones, like "Old phone .wma", despite the fact that I restored teh registry value to its original setting.
Where goes system sound files? Not ring signals
easyest way to install ring tones is to hold the stylus on the audio file, and on the menu you will find "set as Ringtone" and the file is copied to the ringtone directory
Yeah, but that's actually the problem: the file will occupie 3-5 MB of valueable internal memory, instead of the SD-card (which is relatively large).
I tried to install a WAV file, put it in the Rings folder and it was then shown in the ringtone selection also. I tried to play it but it didn't work, just silence.
Is there a limit to the size? I tried a guitar solo that is 3.5 mb in size.
-John
i have an mp3 file that is an 8.06mb size file that is my ring tone.

thanks works a treat.
I think you should just use a part of your mp3 files (about 20seconds) because when you receive a call, it will not ring more than those 20s.. So you should use a wave editor on your computer, select only a part of your music, and then compress it in mp3 format (CBR for best compatibility). Your file will only be around 100Ko and you can just copy the ring you need in the "\windows\rings" directory, and store other on your sd card. if one day you want to chnge your ting, just replace another file in the "\windows\rings" directory...

That's not quite correct: it depends on your provider and voice-mail settings. I use no voicemail, and T-Mobile NL waits about 50-60 seconds until ending the unanswered call. If I set up my voicemail to answer right after the first ring, then my phone stops ringing before it even get's the chance to play the MP3.
So it depend on alot of circumstances.

Ringtones

Hey, this is probably a really stupid question, but I just can't figure it out.
Does the MDA play real tones (ringtones), that are like cuts of mp3s with words and everything? I am asking because I've tried to download them from a few sites and they all say its not compatable once I try to download it, I've already spent a few dollars that have not turned up with nothing. I just want to make sure instead of wasting more money for this bs.
PS. If there are any good ringtone sites (preferably free) could you list them? I am looking for Ludacris and Field Mob feat. Jamie Foxx - Georgia (its been hard to find, and all the places that I find it at won't download onto my phone).
Thanx
you could just copy any WAV (44KHz, 16bit) or WMA (I believe) of sufficiently small duration to your PocketPC's \Windows\ folder and they should show up in the list of possible ring tones. No need to waste $3 on 1 10 second low-quality audio clip.
However, MP3s aren't supported as ring tones without using third party applications - which might be what you're running into with the 'realtones'.
Sometimes it's not enough just to copy them to the Windows folder, so if you tap & hold on the WAV/WMA you want to use then select "Set as Ringtone" it will copy it to the right place for you.

I have an MP3 as my ring tone. I just put it in my doc folder and select it via phone > options.
Works fine.
Quick Guide on ringtones: (and very rough)
1. Download EnglishSetMP3Ringtone from the FTP and install on your phone
2. Download Audacity and the MP3 Addon. Install on your Computer
3. Download/Rip your Favorite song to MP3
4. Use Audacity to get the bit of the song that you want (30 seconds Max)
5. Copy the New MP3 created in Audacity to your phone
6. Tap and select set as Ringtone
And there you have it.

Yep, no worries here. My mp3 works fine as a ringtone.
It is located My Device> Windows> Rings and was automatically stored there after selecting 'set as ringtone' within My Sounds folder in My Documents.

can you please link or direct us to "EnglishSetMP3Ringtone"? i got a headache searching through ftp folders and gave up
not for me but for a poor non-htc'er. my wiz plays mp3 ringtones from \windows\rings
gah, I was confusing it with the alarm ( don't tell me I'm wrong on that, too ). No idea why 'realtones' wouldn't work, then - but still, just grab whatever music you want... no need to help make a bunch of people filthy rich because of thousands of people selling 8s of crappy quality music for $3 a piece.
all mp3s work as ringtones on my mda, without any problem
got the jamie foxx tune, download it of limewire etc
I have no problems making ringtones at all. This is what I do:
1- Use Audacity to crop a Mp3, .Wav, or .Wma file to about 20 seconds or so
2- Choose "Save as Mp3"
3- Using Activesync copy your new ringtone to windows/rings folder on your device
4- select the ringtone in sounds/notifications
Too easy! Here's a thread with some if you aren't interested in making your own:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=45290
A commonly used technique is to go to Walmart.com and download all the previews they have of songs and copy them to your device. These are usually about 30sec and more often than not have the most recognizable part of a song.
Hey all
Have a look at http://www.mobile9.com a great site for
all kinds of free stuff like ringtones, wallpapers, etc...
Greetings
Mindmaster
- Find the MP3 files you want to use as ringtones and and save them to your PC.
- Get Audacity (here http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ )
- Use Audacity to crop the part of the MP3 you want to use and save it to your PC.
- Get the free trial of the MP3 to ringtone programme from here http://www.ddz1977.com/ and use it to compress the MP3 to a small file size.
- Copy the new files to your device (to the temp folder for example).
- Open file explorer on the device, go to the directory and tap and hold the the file, then select 'Set as Ringtone' which moves it to the correct location. In the settings window for Notifications you will now see all the files available as ringtones for any notification. (You can now delete the mp3 from the temp folder.)
As an aside, I used the programme to compress all my MP3 music and got 100 CDs on one 1GB mini sd card.

How do I set an MP3 as a ringtone??

I tried putting an MP3 file in the Windows\Rings folder so it does show up as one of my ringtones in the phone options. But it doesn't play and my Windows default ringtone plays instead. There isn't a native capability for MP3 playing as a ringtone. So is there any way around this?? I know I can convert it to WAV, but the WAV file turns out to be 4MB compared to 300K as MP3!! Big difference especially if I want to assign dozens of ringtones for different contacts. Any suggestions?
The only thing i can think of is that maybe in your contact list you have the default ringtone set for individual callers. If not then i guess try to clear your data, maybe something you installed is making it go screwy.
Very easy .. Tap on the mp3 file and hold ... there is an option 'set as ringtone' All I use is MP3's as ringtones.
If what they said doesn't work then it might just be a problem with the mp3 itself. I think I had a problem like that with an mp3 once but I've had a whole lot of wav files not work even when they played fine on my computer. Unfortunately I don't know how to fix them so they will work other than to try downloading it again or downloading it from another source.

What are you running WM5 or WM6? I have found with WM6 that in the phone settings when you select a ring tone and exit out it automatically changes back to the default ring tone. If that is what's happening then there is a workaround. Just something to look for.
dont put the mp3 in any folder, that worked for me. i even tryed putting it in the ringtones folder but it wont find it when i select a ring tone.
Actually, I think what the o.p. is talking about is this;
Say you have a default ringer for all people. Default, or whatever. Go into your contacts, and edit one, placing a MP3 file as a ringtone (I guess you'll have to move it to windows/ringtones?). Now, if you highlight the file on the person's contact page, it should 'play' for a preview. Mine does not play. The ringtone I've set happens to be >5Megs. not sure if that matters.
So, setting individual ringtones for people doesn't seem to work. However, I have previously been able to assign a MP3 as a default ringtone for 'all' people.

I can't get this option if the MP3 is in MBs. The thing to do is copy the MP3 to My Documents and paste it under UA Contents. Go to phone settings where it says ring tone, scroll down the box, find your song, tap on it. It will pop up in the ring tone box. Be sure that the MP3 is associated with windows media player and no other you may have, otherwise it cannot be used as a ringtone. That's why I didn't get the option to set as the ring tone. The MP3 I tapped and held was associated with GS player, but that was easily solved.

Simply tap/hold/cut or copy the MP3 you're transferring from, go to windows/rings , and paste. The MP3 has been moved to the Rings folder.

Question: Why would you want to set a MP3 as a ring tone regardless of who's calling you? Are there any 30sec. MP3s out there because the longest you can listen is 30 seconds. MP3s eat up your memory in MBs that you might need to have at a later date. Why not download effects or tv theme ringtones as a suggestion only. You can download thousands, maybe more at www.polytones.net.....www.freemobilefun.net, or funformobile.com. You can download videos, music videos, other types of videos at www.mymobileclips.com. Free registration, and after registered no need to log in future visits. Check the box remember me each visit. On this website you can browse or search Metacafe, Dailymotion, Google, You Tube, etc. Select where you want to search from, type in the search box, ex: elvis presley, and videos about him will come up for downloading.
Google for Audacity. It's a ringtone creator that will cut an MP3 down to a usable size by allowing you to select just the part of the MP3 you want to use as the ringtone. It's also free.

songs as ringtones

just got a t-mobile mda and am learning how to use it inside and out. just wondering if its possible to set mp3s as ringtones?
thanks
Yes, it is possible.
It is possible to use your mp3's as your ring tone. You have two options:
1. Using ActiveSync click on: Explore---> "My Windows Mobile-Based Device" ---> Application Data ----> Sounds. This is the folder that you can drop your mp3's into. (i strongly recommend that you shorten the length of your mp3 to maximize your storage, plus you only hear like 15sec of the song anyways.) After you've dropped your mp3's into "sounds" folder go back to your mda click: start> settings> phone> then on the ring tone drop box pick your mp3 and you're good to go.
2. If you have a WM6 ROM with Audio Manager all you have to do is play the mp3 you want as your ring tone then click: Menu> set as ring tone. Again you can crop your mp3 so that you can hear what you want and maximize your storage again. Selecting which mp3 you want as your ringtone is the same as above from the start menu....
It's as simple as that, hope it helps and have fun!
thank you for the help and instruction. but i did everything you said and the song(s) dont show up in the box.
Do you have a storage card? If so you should be able to put the MP3 there(just drag there using acivesync or on the phone use cut and paste and don't put it in any folder just there on the card). You should now be able to see it when you go to your ringtone list.
