I have some .wav files on my SD card which I used to use as rng tones on my old pDA2K.
I cannot remember how to make this happen as none of them appear as options on the K-JAM?

Copy them into the Windows / Rings folder, and then you should be able to select them from the phone / menu / options
Or in the registries you can change the path where the setting app looks for the ring tones:

How about if they are on my SD card?

Putting Ringtones on SD card wil slow reaction and may affect phone to

Seems to work fine from my MiniSD card, without any noticeable delay. I entered
Code:
\Storage Card\MP3
as directory. The weird thing is that (in the phone sound settings panel) it doesn't list playable files in that single directory, but files from the entire device (including the storage card). I suspect it can't handle the path I entered, so it does a recursive search from the top file namespace of the device (hence the list of all playable files). But that's just speculation
Will the Wizard play .mp3 files as ring tones or do they have to be .wav files?

It doesn't seem to like ALL flavours of MP3. VBR is one of them. And it's quite difficult to restore the original setting: the sound control panel is still unable to find the original ringtones, like "Old phone .wma", despite the fact that I restored teh registry value to its original setting.

Yeah, but that's actually the problem: the file will occupie 3-5 MB of valueable internal memory, instead of the SD-card (which is relatively large).
I tried to install a WAV file, put it in the Rings folder and it was then shown in the ringtone selection also. I tried to play it but it didn't work, just silence.
Is there a limit to the size? I tried a guitar solo that is 3.5 mb in size.

I think you should just use a part of your mp3 files (about 20seconds) because when you receive a call, it will not ring more than those 20s.. So you should use a wave editor on your computer, select only a part of your music, and then compress it in mp3 format (CBR for best compatibility). Your file will only be around 100Ko and you can just copy the ring you need in the "\windows\rings" directory, and store other on your sd card. if one day you want to chnge your ting, just replace another file in the "\windows\rings" directory...

That's not quite correct: it depends on your provider and voice-mail settings. I use no voicemail, and T-Mobile NL waits about 50-60 seconds until ending the unanswered call. If I set up my voicemail to answer right after the first ring, then my phone stops ringing before it even get's the chance to play the MP3.
So it depend on alot of circumstances.

So it can't be done without placing the mp3 in the ringtones directory? In deed it's not working for me that way either. I can see the mp3 on the list, but after choosing and pressing an OK, it sets itself back to windows default. Actually I can't use anything else than windows default. I'm really getting mad, plz help! Where is the file associations menu? Maybe there's some problem there. This thing is messed up since I've installed and uninstalled winamp...

It would appear that by default mp3 ringtones are allowed, however once you install a third party app to play mp3's (you mention winamp) you lose the ability to use them(it seems that the Media player engine is used for this).Uninstalling the app makes no difference, you then have no mp3 player because the mobile version of windows does not restore the file association. The best way round this that I have found is to simply use an audio app (Nero wave editor in my case) to convert/edit the mp3s to wma. This has the bonus that most mp3 tracks are too long for a ringtone (how many phones ring for 3-4 minutes without kicking in the answering service ?) so when you convert you can also reduce the length.
I cant comment on the set ringtone cab posted here, never tried it, it may work

I am able to install the cab file without any error message but still can't use mp3's as ringtone. The mp3 file appears in the Sound and Notification drop down list, but whenever I select the mp3 file and try to play, it doesn't play and return back to Windows Default ringtone. Can anyone tell me that what is the problem?

The same problem I have. Also I don't think so that the easiest way to solve it is to convert each of my mp3's to wma or whatever. Somehow there should be a way to restore the file associations. Maybe if someone would have a media player to install (re-install) that could solve it. The problem is that I've also lost my former ringtones.
Have a look at this thread here. Ive just downloaded the files but not tried em yet. Seems to be able to restore file associations so that WMP becomes your default player. This should then allow you to use mp3's as ringtones

So the file associations are normal again, thx to your help. But how can I set an mp3 as ringtone which is stored on the sd card other than copying it to the ringtones folder as it takes far too much space from the main memory? The settings-ringtones does not find the mp3 files either on the sd or in the system memory, only wavs and mids.

That's a pity. Anyway can you suggest any programs then to cut mp3's to smaller pieces? As 4 minutes is far too much thus the size can be shrinked. THX for your kind help.
Try "Sound Forge", But im not sure if it support mp3 files or .waqv only, their you can cut the file to small pieces.

Hey, this is probably a really stupid question, but I just can't figure it out.
Does the MDA play real tones (ringtones), that are like cuts of mp3s with words and everything? I am asking because I've tried to download them from a few sites and they all say its not compatable once I try to download it, I've already spent a few dollars that have not turned up with nothing. I just want to make sure instead of wasting more money for this bs.
PS. If there are any good ringtone sites (preferably free) could you list them? I am looking for Ludacris and Field Mob feat. Jamie Foxx - Georgia (its been hard to find, and all the places that I find it at won't download onto my phone).

you could just copy any WAV (44KHz, 16bit) or WMA (I believe) of sufficiently small duration to your PocketPC's \Windows\ folder and they should show up in the list of possible ring tones. No need to waste $3 on 1 10 second low-quality audio clip.
However, MP3s aren't supported as ring tones without using third party applications - which might be what you're running into with the 'realtones'.
Sometimes it's not enough just to copy them to the Windows folder, so if you tap & hold on the WAV/WMA you want to use then select "Set as Ringtone" it will copy it to the right place for you.

I have an MP3 as my ring tone. I just put it in my doc folder and select it via phone > options.
Works fine.
Quick Guide on ringtones: (and very rough)
1. Download EnglishSetMP3Ringtone from the FTP and install on your phone
2. Download Audacity and the MP3 Addon. Install on your Computer
3. Download/Rip your Favorite song to MP3
4. Use Audacity to get the bit of the song that you want (30 seconds Max)
5. Copy the New MP3 created in Audacity to your phone
6. Tap and select set as Ringtone
And there you have it.

Yep, no worries here. My mp3 works fine as a ringtone.
It is located My Device> Windows> Rings and was automatically stored there after selecting 'set as ringtone' within My Sounds folder in My Documents.

not for me but for a poor non-htc'er. my wiz plays mp3 ringtones from \windows\rings
gah, I was confusing it with the alarm ( don't tell me I'm wrong on that, too ). No idea why 'realtones' wouldn't work, then - but still, just grab whatever music you want... no need to help make a bunch of people filthy rich because of thousands of people selling 8s of crappy quality music for $3 a piece.

got the jamie foxx tune, download it of limewire etc
I have no problems making ringtones at all. This is what I do:
1- Use Audacity to crop a Mp3, .Wav, or .Wma file to about 20 seconds or so
2- Choose "Save as Mp3"
3- Using Activesync copy your new ringtone to windows/rings folder on your device
4- select the ringtone in sounds/notifications

- Find the MP3 files you want to use as ringtones and and save them to your PC.
- Get Audacity (here http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ )
- Use Audacity to crop the part of the MP3 you want to use and save it to your PC.
- Get the free trial of the MP3 to ringtone programme from here http://www.ddz1977.com/ and use it to compress the MP3 to a small file size.
- Copy the new files to your device (to the temp folder for example).
- Open file explorer on the device, go to the directory and tap and hold the the file, then select 'Set as Ringtone' which moves it to the correct location. In the settings window for Notifications you will now see all the files available as ringtones for any notification. (You can now delete the mp3 from the temp folder.)
As an aside, I used the programme to compress all my MP3 music and got 100 CDs on one 1GB mini sd card.
How come when I put a mp3 files in my ring tones folder it won't play. Does this need to be a wav file?
If so, i don't really want a 35MB file to play my ring tone.

I have a mp3 as ringtone, though I use PZP, but as far as I understood, PZP just changes the standard settings of WM, so it should be possible without PZP too... maybe try a different format of the mp3?
try putting them in your my documents folder. thats where i have mine. I actually made a my documents folder on my storage card, but it sometimes switches to the default tone when it rings from standby. i think its because it starts to ring before it powers up the card again.
Firstly, 35MB wav is like a 2 minutes sound. Do you actually need a 2 minute sound for your ring tone? How long does it takes for you to answer your phone?
Anyway, try compressing it to WMA. You definately can use WMA files for your ring tones. Get the encoder free from M$.

i guess ur problem caused by third party music software which they assign their program for ur default music file.
how to check it...??? go to file explorer, and see the display icon / play the file for ur mp3 file which u want to assign 4 ur ringtone. does it in WMP's icon and also plays in WMP? if NO, go to ur third party music software and unassigned/uncheck mp3 files format as a default program to play those formats.
because as i know, the device plays mp3 format for ringtone using WMP's system.

Quick & Easy way
You can make MP3's as ringtones easily.
Use File Explorer to locate then file, then press & hold with the stylus (or finger) until you get the options menu.

In WM5 you can only use MP3s as ringtones, NOT notification sounds.
You need to convert your sounds to .wav format then put them into the /windows folder on your device in order to allow them to be visible in alarms and sounds¬ifications.
Alternativly update to WM6 and you can use MP3s for all sounds.

What about WMA files as ringtones and notification sounds??? Is it possible to use them with wm6?? If so, where do they need to be put on the device or what reg key needs to be changed to work off the sd card. Thanks!
I've got a new .wav file in \windows and it is showing up in the alarms dropdown but whwn I select it the value will not persist ('flicks' to previous in list). Do the file properties need to be anything in particular and if so how is best to change them. Or is it something else?

Not to clear on what your asking.
Because I don't know what your running on your PDA? (OS, ROM etc.)
A little History is always helpful..
Did it ever work before?
I'll take a stab at it... I'm assuming you have WM6 as the OS and you have a hermes
From what you wrote, you have a new wave file and it shows up in the drop-down list but goes back to the default alarm tones, and that your new wave never engages, not even during the test?(where you selected the alarm tone)
I can suggest a few things:
~Try locating your wave or mp3 clips in: My Device\Application Data\Sounds
(This worked great for me, I was able to use the files here as ring-tones and alarms)
~Check to make sure the file is not protected, read only or hidden
~Try a smaller wave file at a lower bit rate (More or less as a test)
~Try converting the wave file to mp3

Would love to know this myself. Thought I'd been using some off my mSD card before upgd'ing to WM6, but am not able to make it work yet in vp3G's AT&T ROM.

You can use different 3rd party apps, i.e. enAlarm as alarm clock, photcontactspro for ringtones and sms.
BUT:
As the card is not responding that fast as Ram there is a chance for the so called SOD (sleep of dead) if your device is in power save mode. The alarm goes off or the phone is ringing, the application is searching for the sound file, but the card is not ready because of the power save mode. The application is confused - black screen - sleep of dead.
I recommend to save all sound files for ring- alarm- and sms tones in the main memory.
ok i figured out how to make the mp3 into the alarm tones. basically the file size must be around or less than 600 kb, and in wave file. if you have an mp3 convert to .wav, and change the quality. for me, i used PCM 11.025 kHz, 16 Bit, Mono, but its dependant on the size of your song file. you can use your sound recorder to make these adjustments.

i have search in the full device, but i can't set one of my ringtones for text message notification except the stock htc ringtones, and i can't find a menu to set a ringtone for the Alarm ( my wake up morning alarm for example)
is there something i missed , or an application to manage this ? or may be there is a method to save ringtones ( size , format, during time of the audio file)

for the ringtone for messages you need to go to Application Data\Sounds and paste your ringtone there. (MS makes it easy for you right? --> NOT)
setting the alarm sound can be done via start->settings->system tab-> clock & alarms.
From there on you can click on the alarm bell to select a sound.
As for the alarm, i'm figuring out that one myself. It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.
If anyone has a solution for the alarm, please post!
Use a great program on my xda2i called Alarmtoday. It's excellent, but today screen based... unsure how it'll work with tf3d.
I have also heard someone tout a program called ptravel alarm. I'm getting my HD early this week and I WILL be working on this so i'll keep watching this thread.

regarding the Alarm sound choice , it's really amazing that you don't a menu to pick you favorite mp3 ringtone and make it your alarm sound .... i'm an old iphone user but a 8 years nokia user , and i always had the choice .....

i'v tried with the wav file for my text message notification and it works if stored in Application data / sounds ...but i have shell32,exe error message .....
hummm not so good.
for the alarm issue: i converted an mp3 song of 3,5 mo in wav format and the result is a wav file of 35 mo !!!!! i think it's too big for just a sound file and i didn't try to store it and set ti as default alarm tone .....

I use ALARM TODAY and it is excellent. MP3 alarm is just one of many functions.
It needs to be in "wma" format, if you want to assign your own sound to the text/mail alerts its has to be "wma", iv tried "mp3" and "wav" but it never worked. "wma" worked for me.

MS needs to hurry with their WM7..... it's not acceptable that setting a ringtone or messagetone is this difficult. I would have expected that if i choose the property of a mp3 i can use that mp3 to:
- set as ringtone
- set as messagetone
- set as alarm
- set as ...
How hard can that be?

i've been using a program called audacity for my ringtones and for my messages.
Under 'My Documents' there's a 'My ringtones' folder - I threw all mine in there, although it seems that you dont necc. have to (have to say, it's much easier/better organised on WM6.1 HD - it was a little awkward on the Cruise)
It seems no .mp3 can be used for the alarm sound. I think it needs to be a .wav file.

I didn't know that - although - it has to be said that the alarm program in WM is retarded. I use my phone as my daily alarm clock, have for years - there's no PRACTICAL 'snooze' option in WM - anyway, my solution - SPB TIME - works like a dream (pardon the pun...) and the snooze buttons are nice and big enough, even for my sleep fogged brain...

i have been converting and using my own ringtones and message alert tones for a while now,
mp3 files work as ringtones if you put the trimmed down version (as only 30 secs is useful) in the /Windows/Rings folder
the message alerts and alarm alerts you need .wav files placed inside the /Windows folder itself.
i just use copy and paste from my PC in active sync mode to put the files there and then use the 'Sounds and Notifications' to assign them.
i use smallest wav file ie 5/6 sec for the alerts but longer versions could possibly work..

i have made a cab file with a few tones and each of these tones will be installed into the correct place for you to choose under the right heading

contains approx 5 ringtones and 4 alert tones
rather than using the phone memory for ringtones and other tones, u can create a "My Documents" folder on memory card and put all your tones inside there be it mp3,wma, wav or any other format the phone supports, then select them from "sounds and notifications"

I'm not debating that, it's just that there seems to be a lot of confusion and I am positive that the method I posted works...although it is probably better / faster to store tones on the device as data in device memory is faster read then data on the card.
The tones take up SO little memory that...there are no advantages to storing on the card, but you may have slight ringtone delays (disadvantage) if you store on card.
